Is it possible to shrink a LUN?

Curious, would be useful.

Thank you!

No - it's not possible. Since the HDS is thin and put in service, you can have a smaller than the LUN partition table to 'fix' a wrong size. You can also make the OS level partition resize/copy between LUNS to "reduce." The question is of course that the compellent cannot see what does the operating system, except as provided by the Server Agent. Server Agent allows the effective stay of thin provisioning, but can not resize the volume down.

  • VMWare esxi 5.5 - is possible to shrink a thick disk hard put into service?

    Hey guys

Recently, I have increased the size of the hard drive to one of my VM to 300 GB drives when I only need 200GB.

The player is supplied thickness. Memory I don't think that you can reduce a thick disc put into service from the client VMWare 5.5.

So my question is, is there another way I can reduce this hard drive stocked thickness so I can recover unused space?

    Kind regards

    Aaron

Yes, technically, if you have a 300 GB windows volume supported by a thick hard of 300 GB you can do the following:

    1. Defragment system files comments with Raxco Disk defrag or similar, as the use of the option consolidate free space
    2. Try and make sure that a good number costs blocks by the end of the partition (options defrag boot use pagefile and $mft etc.)
    3. Reduce the 200 GB partition
    4. Storage vmotion virtual machine and set the destination thin format

This hard never will now have more than 200 GB unless the windows partition is cultivated but the hard remains thin. Otherwise, vmware standalone converter or vmkfstools way to go. If prefer vmkfstools.

  • is it possible to do lun replication two table of different types

is it possible to do replication LUNs in two different types in the table such as hp and emc.

    Hello

    What requirements and use cases?
If you want to replicate from storage, you can seek a third-party replication device such as EMC RecoverPoint, EMC RecoverPoint after disaster and data - EMC Protection that supports the berries EMC or other 3rd-party.

If you want to replicate (ESXi) host, you can use vSphere replication that can replicate virtual machines from one host to another host (same or different site) that allows replication between the warehouses of data hosted on a storage array.

  • How to get the number of LUN to physical RDM assigned to VM?

    Hi people,

Is it possible to get the LUN ID or number of a RDM physical disk attached to a virtual from Windows using PowerCLI machine?

    Thank you.

    Hi Albert,

the first PowerCLI script will give the LUN ID or the number of physical RDM disks attached to a virtual machine for ESX 3.5 servers:

    Get-VM | `
    Get-HardDisk | `
    Where-Object {$_.DiskType -eq "RawPhysical"} | `
    Select-Object -Property @{N="VM";E={$_.Parent}},
      @{N="HardDisk";E={$_.Name}},
      @{N="Lun";E={$_.ScsiCanonicalName.Split(":")[-1]}}

The second script PowerCLI will give you the LUN ID or number of a RDM physical disk attached to a virtual machine for 4 ESX servers:

    Get-VM | `
    Get-HardDisk | `
    Where-Object {$_.DiskType -eq "RawPhysical"} | `
    Select-Object -Property @{N="VM";E={$_.Parent}},
      @{N="HardDisk";E={$_.Name}},
      @{N="Lun";E={
        $HardDisk = $_
        $lun = Get-VMHost -VM $_.Parent | `
          Get-ScsiLun -LunType Disk | `
          Where-Object {$_.CanonicalName -eq $HardDisk.ScsiCanonicalName}
        [int](Select-String ":L(?\d+)$" `
            -InputObject $lun.RuntimeName).Matches[0].Groups['lunID'].Value
      }}

Thanks to Luke for his blog post the making of a New VIProperty called Monday who gave me the idea for the regular expression.

  • connect several LUN to a virtual machine

    Hi all

I was wondering is it possible to connect multiple LUNS to a Linux VM? We want to store data from different departments in separate LUN. Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Thank you

    Ke

    Hello.

Yes, you can present several as RDM LUN to a virtual machine.  I have a Windows file server built exactly as you described, using the same approach.

    Good luck!

  • Make a single LUN can be used by multiple ESX hosts

Is it possible for a single LUN to be made usable by multiple ESX hosts at the same time?  For example, if you have an image or used by a vSphere environment requiring other vSphere environments in the data center access, you can put the image on a storage place where completely separate ESX hosts vSphere environments completely separate can see the same lun and clone the image or necessary?

If the logic unit number is locked by accessed by an ESX host will be lock expires when the ESX host is not an another ESX host in another environment vSphere allowing access to the logical unit number, or is the lock, as it is usable by a single ESX host, until the storage is reconfigured to make it usable by a different host?

Is there a better solution to this scenario?

    Thank you

You can deploy both at the same time.  Locking occurs only for changes to metadata and only for the shooting of subsecond.  It is not required for the entire deployment process.

  • More than 2 TB LUN

I am setting up a new server and would like to have 3 x 2 TB drives configured in a RAID 5 array. I read online about VMware limited with the creation of LUN more than 2 TB and that the workaround is to create multiple LUNS using extensions. My question is, are there limitations that could affect the possibility of creating several LUN - for example, are there only certain RAID controllers that support this?

    Cheers, Kris

The controller Dell RAID (PERC) is able to create multiple logical disks (volumes) by a single RAID group.

Enter your PERC BIOS during startup and create 2 volumes.

  • Join the Lun

    Hi @ all,

I have a simple question about ESX server 3.0.1 and Lun:

Settijng upward a VM, is possible to join different LUN 2 in one volume?

If this is the case, HOW can I do this?

I tried to get between the threads, but the results of each query was made bty in huge amount of messages...

Hoping to be the first to ask...

    THX in advance for answering.

    Maurizio

If you're talking about Windows volumes.

Simply add 2 virtual computer hard drive. A LUN1 and LUN2 on

In Windows, you can make dynamic disks and create a volume on both drives.

  • Moving the ASM LUNS from one server to another

    Hi all

I have ASM 11.2.0.2 on Oracle Enterprise Linux server connected to an IBM DS5100. On a single server, I have a database I want to move to another physical server. It is possible to detach the LUNS from the source server and connect to the new server, and then restart the database, providing I have copy all relevant configurations on the new server? Kinda like the old exportvg/importvg, we in the Unix world. I searched the web but can't find a method to achieve this or if it is still possible. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Gary

    Source server:

1.) NO.! Because if you drop the diskgroup ASM header gets erased, and the other system won't be able to detect
2.) NO.! Both dynamically find the disks. If they are simply not there... so they be found. So no information on diskgroup etc.
The only thing that you should probably take care is to remove the name diskgroup asm_diskgroup parameter form. Otherwise ASM will say that it does not find the diskgroup during startup.
3.) anyone simply it. Then multipath not detect either...

    Target server:
1.) Yes. However, you must keep the file multipath.conf for the entries of the same as on the other server, that devices receive the same names. Otherwise the names will be different, which is not nice, but not a problem.
2.) simply SCAN the discs, and they should be disclosed. Make sure that your SCAN_ORDER and SCAN_EXCLUDE parameters are o.k. for asmlib.
    Yes 3). Simply mount.

  • Merge the expanded paths

    path3dissue.pngselectpathspath3dissue.png

I ran into a problem where, as I can't merge the following extended path with a route closed, for example a square. Left is specified without paths, right image appears with the expanded paths.  I tried many options of search path without success?

It is also possible to shrink the middle way in proportion and all other paths adapts accordingly?

I was wondering why you are creating a complex object?

Simply draw a circle with a thick line and apply a gradient to this trait.

Then in the Panel gradient colors, choose 'Apply gradient across the shot' in the section of the stroke.

  • multiple selection of data to create protection groups store

    Hello

I do not understand why my create protection group box is only because I have 4 data store to protect (see image below).

    Any idea?

    vSphere 5.1u3

    vCenter 5.1u3 (windows)

    SRM 5.1.3

    EMC recoverpoint 4.1SP1 P1

    EMC VNX 5300 FCoE

    RecoverPoint SRA 2.2

    Kind regards.

    srm protection group.PNG

    Hello

    There are two possible reasons:

1 LUN supporting these data stores are part of a consistency group defined at the level of the storage array

    2. There is one or more VMs with disks on several data warehouses

Most likely, it is the second. Imagine that you have these 4 datatstores.

If you have with VM1 of disks on the XX_HIGH_DCN and XX_HIGH2_DCN data store, then MRS. could group these data warehouses. So if you have VM2 with disks on XX_HIGH_DCN and XX_LOW_DCN (e.g., OS drive and application drive) then XX_LOW_DCN is added to the group. A VM more spanning 2 data warehouses and you own all 4 in a group. Or you can have 1 VM with disks on all 4 data storage. In any case MRS. try to calculate a group of data stores such as all the virtual machines in this group can be recovered successfully together.

  • reduce the illustrious vmdk files

    Hello

Is it possible to shrink files highlighted in the illustration below?

    vmware shrink.png

No, you will not be able to reduce snapshots. However, do you really need these 4 shots? As a best practice, snapshots only must be retained as long as necessary. Keep the snapshots for a long time will consume considerable disk space (as you can see) and may also decrease the performance of virtual machines.

To remove snapshots open Manager snapshots and run "Delete All". Remember that, because of the size of snapshots, it can take a few hours.

  • Upgrade the application in the application layer

I have a question about upgrades of the application from the application layer. The App layer capture guidelines 4.0 claims in a "Note on the upgrades of the application" "you can replace the existing application by a new layer layer. To make this capture application upgrade in one application layer as well as applications or updates required at that time there) by... starting with a clean reference machine and the capture of the new application. "Once you have the new applayer, use update App layers to replace the old with the new application layer application layer". My question is this - I have a virtual machine with 10 applications on it to one of our departments that was captured as an application layer, we'll call it layer 1 App. If one of these applications must be updated, I take the instructions above to suggest that I update just an app on a clean reference VM, and then replace the application Layer 1 with the layer app update, which we will call App Layer 2. But what happens to 9 other applications that were in the application Layer 1? In fact to create a separate app update layer for an application? This seems not effective either. I thought I'd go in the instant VM which has 10 apps, can he improve it that captures the App layer replacement? Sorry if I'm doing this more complicated than it really is!

I'll do my best because I don't have the exact definition, but basically it's when you go to provision a virtual machine in an environment vCenter/ESXi host that gives you the option of how you want to deploy the disk. You want to have the disc be fully provisioned or thick put into service (allocate all the space immediately and empty space to zero) or would you like to "thin provision" the disc. When you "thin Provision" the disk you say the BONE he left say 40 GB of usable space, but really on the end back into the storage you have only allocated say 20GB of the potential 40 GB in size of drive capable. The size of the disk grows to its limit of 40GB because the data within the virtual machine grows, so can supply you more VM to a size allocated LUN, without taking up all the space as fast.

For example if you have let say a 100 GB LUN and you supply thick and each server has a hard drive to lets say 40 GB, he would recommend that you now fill the LUN to the limit, but not more than 2 VM available. This leave, about 20 GB of space for the virtual machine of to perform its other mechanisms as well as if you wanted to try and squeeze a small disc in I guess you could.

Now let's try this same scenario when we "thin provision" a disc. So go us through the process of construction of the virtual machine and the size of the 40 GB drive, but use "thin provisioning" and the real disk footprint on the LUN is 20 GB. This means that you could potentially get 4 thin provisioned VM in the same 100 GB LUN. So better using the available storage is presented to you. Now, you will also watch and manage your VM more closely as if you pictures or things of this type you could quickly get yourself in trouble by filling the logic unit number or if the machine virtual disk footprint is increased to its maximum size, you would have problems as well.

I want to say that this is just an example and I highly recommend that evaluate you your environment and know how things affect your VM before trying to "mount" as many as possible VM on a LUN storage. It's complicated, but if you have constraints of storage, this is definitely a solution to consider.

  • Duda was the hora of crear storage en esxi 4.1

Hola tengo una duda y l averdad no to en than i ' publicarla.
    The duda are the sgte.
Cuando Aa±ado storage, no to por as in some me don't accommodate sale vacio (cosa're Normals are only no tiene mas LUN don't sin UN asignarle storage a dicha LUN) otras pero me salen LUN are assigned. How possible that salgán LUN con is a vmware configurado in the same storage?
    What son esas Lun´s?
Además in ellas in el segundo paso (al seleccional lun) una sale me una ventana en that I have very options: keep the existing signature, assisgn a new assignature is format the drive.
    (Editor pantallazos)
Paso1're the pantalla in the that puedo seleccionar Lun
Paso2_a're el segundo paso donde me as the lun tiene Particiones primarias
Paso2_b're otra pantalla me da en otra lun donde me da las very options
    Gracias a todos

in esta pantalla paso2_a.JPG ¿hay vmfs? y esta? paso2_b.jpg are that in las dos sale referencia a vmfs, en paso2a of the sale in the lower part alusion a VMFS partition y su ubicacion física, / vmfs/devices/say/sym..., paso2_b hace alusion there in the part superior (Select vmfs mounting options)

Hay paso2_a en, pero if probably no you pidio para hacer will, porque no pudo ser accedido (no debe estar Dios). You prune Saber con todo in el paso1, cuando you muestra the VMFS Label column. IF ahi appears el number del VMFS, fits long after if queres hacer will y pudo open el VMFS, hay, sino solo una particion VMFS pero sin contenido.

Of todas formas me he found in host Québec has the storage to add to hora. in the pantalla paso1. JPG me salen LUN as host detecta pero estan being have por otro host vacias como el y tiene maquinas office dentro (aunq doy TR a navigation data store, not me salen carpetas por cada vmware, sino than todos los archivos salen en vidéoconférence raiz)

IF students eso, also are a tema of presentation of LUN. No pasar should. UNA LUN presented correrctamente y assignada por appear automatically when haces a new scan en UN ESX en secion storage.

Otra cosa pantalla paso2_b.JPG cuando salen las back options en grey are por los datos borrados pero particion sigue were activa do not?

Eso o're una n no vmfs, o any other than ESX el dato no tiene como handle is needed if o If formatear.
