iTunes does not search device, can it?

OK, I kinda a stupid question, but I was not able to find a simple answer so far.

I just deleted my Mac and do a clean install of El Capitan.  My music is stored on an iPad (IOS 7.1) and he plays very well, but when I try to use the button 'Search' at the top of iTunes it only includes "My library" and "iTunes store".  I haven't done any pairing or synchronization, just plug it in I usually do.

It is also worth noting that I am in iTunes in safe mode, I seem to have one of those accidents "crashes immediately on startup in com.apple.QCITRegisterVisualPlugin even if it's a clean install without plugins" mysterious which so far I have found "no response" messages.

But I want to ask about this in another post.  This lack of intentional, or is search - this a characteristic I should expect to be there and does not work?

I know that the iPad is running a rather old version, but I'm extremely reluctant to update from this passage to El Capitan is a nightmare of things no longer works, until I think of wiping and installing of Mavericks instead.

Any thoughts?

Music stored on your iPad won't appear in iTunes. iTunes media is in the iTunes library. You can transfer your iTunes media purchased on your computer from your iPad, but that's all. To transfer any other music, you will need to use a software 3rd party product. Here's a tip to our expert turingtest2 user resident iTunes which should help you:

Plug in the appliance. You should hear the telltale Windows sound device connection and a Division must acquire a new entry. This should be your device. If you do not hear the sound, and you have tried other cables so perhaps you have some Lint in the port that prevents a correct contact. Inspect with a flashlight and a magnification of class. • iTunes does not synchronize with Gen 1 Apple TV now.

Writing in the hope that someone may have a work around:

Now, my iTunes does not sync with my Gen 1 Apple TV.  A few months ago, it worked fine.  Now he doesn't.  Apple technical support was beautiful, but not useful.  Disconnect me and restart everything, but their statement is, "We do not support the Gen 1 Apple TV."

I don't support an old product.  I don't understand NOT Apple changing iTunes if he smashes a product we purchased, as clients.  For me, it's obscene.

Specifically, when I run iTunes, it appears, briefly, at the top in the Center, where the Apple logo is, the sentence, "(my name) connecting Apple TV."  Then the sentence disappears, but on the left, where he lists the devices, the Apple TV no longer appears.  It lists only my iPhone.

When I go to iTunes-> Preferences-> Apple TV, it displays in the window, my Apple TV, by name and shows that it is "synchronization."

Thus, Apple made it impossible change images or playlists, add songs or make other changes on Apple TV.  I can burn CDs on my MacBook Pro and make changes in iTunes, but the changes do not appear on the Apple TV.
