• Java desktop application is dying? I'm so sad...

  Hey guys, this is a general question. I was talking to a guy who was going to teach me Java and I told her that I was interested mainly in office and in Swing applications. He went to respond that he does not need to learn that unless they take a course about it. He said that the Java desktop applications are dead and that people now only use Java on the web. He said that programming of desktop applications is not money... and it's not worth. It was very sad to hear for me... Can anyone account for what is true? What is Minecraft? It of on the desk and made a lot of money... I'm so sad, I was really looking forward to learn Swing, but I'm not going to if in a few years, it will be virtually useless. Thanks for all replies.   Oracle Database 11 g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.7.0 - 64 bit Production
  With partitioning, Oracle Label Security, OLAP, Data Mining,
  Oracle Database Vault and Real Application Testing options
  
  Developing on Jdeveloper 10.1.3.5 on WinXP Pro. Our production application servers are running on Windows 2003 10.1.3.4. I was using the jdbc libraries provided, but test now with the 11.1.0.7.0 drivers, downloaded from OTN.
  
  Database = WE8MSWIN1252 NLS_CHARACTERSET
  
  I guess our application servers are on WEMSWIN1252.
  
  Our application has to support french and English.
  
  We had problems with the unmapped characters (question mark reverse) in our database, and we suspect that these are special windows extended characters. Our java web application is set to the character set iso8859-1. We suspect that it is maybe the reason why some characters were is badly encoded in the comic book. Our application is built with struts 1.2.9.
  
  The page encoding UTF - 8 seems to be the standard for web applications. I changed our configuration of the struts controller to use UTF - 8. Using Jdeveloper OC4J local testing reveals that although the data extracted from makes it db correctly in the browser, registering with special characters is a problem.

  I guess the question is here, mswin1252 is a single-byte coding scheme, but UTF - 8 is an encoding scheme of variable width and for some European characters, uses 2 bytes to represent. I think that's what I see here.

I remember reading that the best practice is always to use a character set of superset in comics, as well as its subsets in customers.   I was wondering how to make my remote Java application communication (message exchange) object to my implementation of Java data service.
  
  The scenario is this: my Flex client application must connect to a 3rd person resource, which requires authentication. I was thinking of using a destination of the remote object that will perform the authentication of the user. It will store a session object valid (Java) to be used later to perform various reportoire to this 3rd party resource.
  
  At one point, during the same session of Flex browser, a data destination Service needs be accessible, which will link to the 3rd party resource. Well, for this operation, I don't want the user to authenticate again on the resource party 3rd, as a valid session exists and stored by the implementation of the remote Java object.
