Hello

I currently have 2 hp g6 servers running esxi5.5 directly connected to my home router that uses the whole family only. This router handles dhcp right now.

I would like to set up a windows with dns, dhcp, rolls conot domain environment.

What gives the lab a different IP range be enough to separate them? Or woild I need a switch?

Just give a different subnet will be working as expected not because machines can get the IP address for any of your DHCP servers... the best way to do is isolate them in a new area of L2, using VLANS or physically separated.

    You can find all downloads for VMwre to https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/downloads. What you might want to look for are the links "Download trial" to "VMware Workstation" and "VMware vSphere. BTW. is there a reason you ask for older versions?

    PS: In the past VMware has provided a free license of VMware Workstation after you have completed the requirements to become a VCP - DCV (i.e. necessary training, more exam). I'm sure they'll continue to do that.

    because ESXi is intelligent in its partition on the storage configuration, feel free to simply create a RAID5 out of these disks and install ESXi on it - the partition of local data store is separate from the one system - you'll have the most available space in this way.

  • Support of laboratory home

    Implementation of vSphere\ see lab and need help.  I bought a 1U server and a small netgear FS108 switch and a workstation to manage everything. I installed ESXi on the server and gave it the same IP range of 10.0. *. * that my comcast modem use for my range of dhcp wireless for all my devices.    My question is this, do I use a cat 5 my ESXi host cable to one of the ports on my cable modem? What do other people do? When you build the host ESXi what address IP should I give for DNS?

    Just to clarify, you have a cable modem and a wireless router in your configuration or are the two one device?

    If you need internet access for virtual machines residing inside your host ESXi, then you need to run a cable between the host and your modem.

    In any case a recently built myself a box of ESXi from lab to the home of a GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 and i5 2500 k, 16 GB Ram etc...

    I does not, is that the onboard network adapter did not work

  • Help setting up a laboratory at home using Cisco kit and a blank Superhub

    I just started my CCENT class and so I try to create a laboratory that is separate from my LAN House, initially using a blank Superhub and a Cisco 1841 router.  Please keep in mind that I am a beginner, so it may not make sense or be completely illogical...

    The superhub for those who don't know, is a renamed netgear, limit VMDG480.  It's basically a cable modem and router wireless combined.

    The normal daily LAN side of the network was the default installation to receive an IP address via DHCP from the superhub in range 192.168.0.1/24.

    At first, I thought I could put things in preparation for my lab installation, by configuring the LAN subnet using 192.168.0.0 and superhub of/16 mask rank for my 'everyday' network and 192.168.1.0 rank for my "laboratory at home." (Good or bad?...)

    Unfortunately, I'm unable to do so because the superhub only allows the last byte in the mask to be changed, so I changed the mask and it now reads 255.255.255.128, with the idea that I can always have 2 separate networks.

    In the photo above you can see devices on the right side are all directly related to the superhub and continue to work as usual.

    On the left side is where I've implemented a Cisco 1841 router and a laptop computer to test.

    The details of each device are;

    Blank Superhub
    LAN:192.168.0.1
    The DHCP scope: 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.126

    Cisco 1841
    Fast Ethernet 0/1: 192.168.0.126
    255.255.255.128

    It of a little early in your studies for this :) but implementation of your knees it should work:

    1841 router:

    Add a default route:
    IP route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1 (so your router knows where to forward DNS queries to 8.8.8.8)

    Connect your 3560 to the second port on the router and configure a trunk on the switch port and add vlan 2:

    name Home_Lab

    Connect your PC to the second switchport and add vlan2:

    You should be able to ping the address of the router on the subnet in 172.16.x.x 192.x.x.x. I don't have a Virgin hub to test this, but it worked well with two 1841 routers.

  • Problem with server Supermicro laboratory at home, ESXi sets in not as server restarts always

    Dear community,

    I'm having a problem that makes me nuts and I was wondering if you can help me with this.

    While trying to set up a laboratory at home (I think it's often referred to a "white box" system)? I don't get the operational ESXi installation. For three days, I was not able to install ESXi.

    Problem:

    ESXi 5.5U3 installation fails and immediately restarts the host until it starts doing anything... specific.

    Using IPMI my motherboard I recorded (and also attached) a video and tried to integrate it here:

    In case you don't see it please look at the attachment.

    For those who do not see the host starts and begins to extract the files in memory. When he goes to the grey-yellow screen it shows the following lines and then - BOOM - restarts the host and it again:

    Initializing power management...

    the user successfully loaded.

    I tried several options, such as the boot via USB, both internally and externally, to change between USB 2.0 or 3.0 port or IPMI ISO loading but nothing, all this goes down with the same problem or even f * cks up to my output video when you attach a file ISO storage KVM. Disabling USB legacy support also solves nothing and even had to reset the BIOS thereafter. Also to make sure that it is not related to the RAM, I changed the memory and tried with 8 or 16 GB or 32 GB full and also tried different banks, no change.

    It is the material that I use:

    • Supermicro X10SLL-F
    • Kit of UDUMM 240-pin ECC Kingston 32 GB (4 x 8 GB)
    • be quiet 400W power
    • SATA 250 GB HARD drive (or without)
    • Lexar 8 GB USB stick (formatted with Rufus) / anonymous 4 GB USB Stick

    As described above, nothing I tried quite fix it and I start to feel the distress of one.) "(ne pas pouvoir continuer et b.)" After spending a lot of money on things that don't work (and I'd rather not things).

    I know that, currently, this motherboard is not himself but factually have seen several blog posts of people who use this motherboard with success. Why am I the only one who can not do?

    Oh any by the way, the ESXi version is this: VMware-VMvisor-Installer - 5.5.0.update03 - 3116895.x86_64.iso

    All those who try and random restarts as beds me days were due to the poor being quiet power, hopefully, at some point this will help everyone.

  • Conditions of installation of laboratory at home to study for VCP

    I just purchased a Lenovo think TD 230 server with Xeon processor and 2 gd of ram. I confirmed that it meets all of the requirements in the HCL on the VMware Web site. The server contains up to 32 GB of ram, but until I buy the second processor I'm only will be upgraded to 16 GB which will give me a nice amount of memory to be distributed to the virtual machines. I'm looking for some documents with details on how to set up a laboratory SCNET using workstation as host. I know that I have I have an msdn account have access to tons of operating systems and of AMENDMENTS to build the vm with. I'm just trying to understand how to structure the environment using esxi, vsphere, vcenter server and build it in the workstation 8

  • Question of laboratory network home

    I recently acquired a couple of HP DL360 G4s and a NAS I think to support NFS and want to set up a laboratory at home using ESXi 4.1. I also acquired a couple of NIC dual port to add to the servers for additional physical network adapters. I'm a bit confused on the side network, I do not have a GBit 8 port switch I could connect all this, but it is unmanaged and that means no configuration of VLAN. How can I make this work if I want to put the SIN in NFS on my network with internet access?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated

    .. Since I have a switch and can not do VLAN for the time being, I have several uplinks on the standard vSwitch connected to the same subnet?

    As long as you use the 'Road' default vSwitch strategy based on the source port id, it should work.

    What is your opinion with this laboratory to the House vSphere: 2 servers with 16 or 32 GB of RAM from Newegg or Amazon PowerEdge T110 II (Xeon 1230 v2 w/3 NIC) Dell (Dell RAM is of $$), switch (Cisco SG300) managed gigabit, box of i3 intel not expensive with 3 or 4 discs running openfiler or Freenas for storage and a UPS am I missing something? I don't want to build a white box and don't want a RAID controller (for now). Thanks for your advice. (I'm studying for my VCP)

    If the purpose of this study, I would not even spend a lot of money on server hardware, but try to have a decent PC (e.g. I7 CPU, 16 + GB RAM, SSD and HARD disk) and build a virtual lab with which you will have a much better flexibility in what you have installed. For example look at building the ultimate vSphere lab to see if this might be an option for you.

    I'm not familiar with ESXi capabilities or it is that I've never experimented with a bare metal hypervisor. I would like to know if what I have in mind will work before investing my time and money into this project

    Objectives - build a ZFS NAS bases / syslog server under a card for my lab at home

    N40L - Dual-core 1.3 GHz AMD Athlon Microserver HP 2 - NC107i PCI - e Gigabit NIC. I'll add one extra gigabit NIC as well.

    I'll put the max 8GB DDR3 ECC RAM

    For storage, I have to make a minor mod so I can get 5 x HD machine comes with 4 drive bays, so I'll put disks SATA 4 x 2 TB to use as storage RAID-Z. I want to add a shopping cart to drive for 5.25 inch optical drive to install an additional SSD used for these two VMS operating systems.     The FreeNas VM will be able to configure the RAID-Z among the 4 SATA physical disks?

    Each virtual computer will be assigned it's own physical NIC because they will run on 2 separate behind my pfSense firewall network segments. I don't have any image it will really be a problem if I used it in network bridge.

    If this is not possible, I'll probably install FreeBSD on its own and try to get my setup above to work. I'm not familiar with FreeBSD and I want the nice interface of the FreeNAS GUI to manage my storage and Samba shares, so that is why I want to virtualize.

    Advice or advice is greatly appreciated.

    I was looking here (Europe, Switzerland) locally and them found for about $ 40. Kingston is the list this memory as KTH-PL313E / 4G

    $400 for 2 x 3,5 "SATA 2 TB + 1 x 120 GB SSD (I have already 2 x 2 TB drives kicking around and I have a PCI-e Gigabit NIC to an old box)

    So probably all said and done between $1000-$1100 taxes. I'm from good old (Ontario) Canada.
