Levels of raid Volumes Compellent

Hello.

We are looking into buying a Bay Compellent, Dell, but before I look for in its technology.

Unfortunately, the few public records on the SC8000 are very brief.

I'm looking for information how the table handles its raids, from what ive understood, when you create a volume, some data will be placed on raid 10, some on raid 5 and some might end up on raid6 (prioritization).

But the definition of these levels of raid? They simply come from all disks of a certain type, say raid10 ssd and SAS - NL's raid6. or are they built raids more as how 3par manages the CPG, creating mini-raids out of pieces of different discs?

HP also has a wealth of easily accessible information about the paintings of 3par, I can't find anything for compellent :(

http://h20566.www2.HP.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/PSI/manualsResults?sp4ts.Oid=5044394&AC.admitted=1388181376886.876444892.199480143

OK - if really it's better done in person with someone who can demo and animate the allocations of blocks for you.

BUT

Compellent storage virtualized Tier - so, for each level of storage (which are defined by the disks of like I/O features such as speed control, flash type, etc.) all of the devices used to treat each IO.  HDS let each LUN to have several RAID algorithms in use at the same time. The ideal on this would be to have write operations occur in RAID 10 (fastest to write) and read operations to get the RAID5/6 (more effective space). RAID types reserve NOT a specific amount of physical disks - but rather function as a method of organizing for blocks of different LUNS across all the disks in a pane.

Data Progression (Tiering) extends this feature to allow volumes exist with blocks into several levels based on age and the activity of each block. The LUN is presented as there is no difference for servers based on the location of the data and the blocks can be shifted dynamically as criteria. Recently given Progression has been expanded to allow the mixing of writing optimized and read optimized Flash SSD levels that revolutionize the market tables around without resorting to the use of SSDS as a front-end cache. Data is transferred more quickly, then a normal progression among the readers of optimized for reading writing optimized SSD to keep performance levels greater than 100 K IOPS / s while valuing the cost differences inherent in MLC drives (they are cheaper).

One thing that really sets storage Compellent, is that the license is NOT related to the material. If a controller SC8000 can be replaced without purchase of multiple licenses or invalidate the original license. The license is perpetual and abstract the hardware that is used. So if I have a HDS I bought 5 years through a license for all the features for 16 disks I can apply this license to SC8000 controllers and SSDS (up to 16 spare non-pieces) and start using it.

I think that if you use this site as your jumping off point - http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/04/dcm/flash-storage you will find a lot of information just look at software storage Center rather than the specific hardware building blocks.

    Hello

I have a C220M3 with 9266-8i, LSI MegaRAID SAS controller. I used the utility MegaRAID to create a RAID volume, which appears as a virtual drive 0 in MMIC. My ESXi 5.0.0 installation (on flex flash) does not recognize this volume and I can't use it as a data store.

  • drives no raid after installing a new hard drive, deleted a raid volume.

I recently installed a new hard drive on a dimension 9200. One of the two hard drives in the pc has been a failure. After installing a new drive, I had a working old drive and a new drive, I installed vista on the new drive and found I couldn't see the old drive in the computer, also the raid volume was always the same that before removing one of the old disks. After you delete the raid volume, I have now two non-raid drives. My pc would be better if I change those two to a Raid volume as were the two previous albums, and if yes, how can I do.

  • ESX 4.0 shows less available space on a RAID Volume as full size

    Server configuration:

    VMWare ESX 4.0.0 Update 1

Mother SATA superMicro SuperServer 6025 B

    Intel E5405 2.0 GHz CPU quad-core 64-bit

8 GB OF DDR2 ECC RAM

GCCA 9690 3Ware storage controller - SA with the latest firmware (which

supports VMWare 4.0.0 Update 1) and installed the ESX drivers.

Disks 0 and 1 are 1 TB disks.  2-5 drives are 2 TB disks.  2 TB disks

have already been used with Windows and has the GUID partition table, but now

I want to use with VMWare.  It causes me problems I think.

I created a volume of RAID1 1 TB of drives 0 and 1 and installed

VMWare on this, and my first data store is on the remaining space on this

volume.  I then created a RAID10 volume out of the 4 drives for 4 TB

total space.  It's initialization through initialization in the background is

    immediately available via the controller.

I tried to create a store of data on this volume. I had various

complaints from the GUI, including "unable to get the partition information.

and "object is not set to an instance of an object" I tried to click

    my way through.

I did a little research and saw an article on how to create partitions

manually.  But fdisk was complaining about the GUID partition tables, and

even after I created the partition and restarted I wasn't able to find a

device in VMFS to create the file system on.

So I thought I would blow the entire partition table, so I used "dd".

to kill the copies of the partition GUID in beginning and end table

    of the disc.

Now ESX not be complaint, but it is said that the capacity of the disk is

3.64 TB and TB 1.64 is space.  However there is no

table partition at this point and "fdisk-u/dev/sdb" shows the full

    capacity of the volume.

    What I am doing wrong?

ESX (i) can't stand no bigger than "2 TB - 512 Bytes" lun.

What you need to do, is to divide your RAID and attend smaller LUNS ESX host.

  • VMware ESX does not recognize the local RAID volume

    Hi all

We are running VMware ESX 3.5 Update 3 on a G4 HP Proliant DL 380 with a Raid Smart Array 6i controller (this is our test platform).

Since the VI Client, it is not possible to add a data store that corresponds to a local 200 GB Raid5 volume.  I can see this disc in the "Storage adapters" section (path: vmhba0:1:0, LUN ID = 0).

We have updated the firmware on our server is no problem of conformity between VMware ESX and such old material?

Thank you very much in advance for your help

Connect directly to the server and try to create this VMFS volume?  I noticed on VC 2.5 that whenever I have create a server and try that he does not see the space when I try to add storage.

  • Volume of the voice channel Windows 7 very low, all levels of thin volume.

    Hello

I have problems with a recent installation of Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit.

    Problem:
All the sounds of voice work, but they have a very low volume. I tend to have to reduce all the other audio almost minimum, then come out the volume of the voice, the speaker volume and mixer Volume volume even hear max.

This is true in games, both running in and out of the compatibility mode. This also applies to Windows Media Player videos and games in the browser and video in Firefox. It's even true in the unit.

    Tried solutions:
On other forums, similar problems of some other people:
-a suggested that I have turn off the cancellation of the vote under Kaeroke in sound effect Manager, it is already disabled.
-a suggested that I put CP > Sound > Communications tab > in the 'status quo', no effect.
-tried reinstalling the drivers, once again, no effect.
-A forum suggested to another with the same question that he installed 64-bit windows 7, is not viable as 64-bit installs (despite the fact that I'm on Ubuntu 64-bit.)

    History:
Previously, in windows XP SP3 it worked well, as it does now on Ubuntu 9.04 (Dual Boot)
The change seems to have occurred at the same time that the installation of Windows 7.

    Thank you for your time.

There has been no updated drivers since, however... I don't know how it works, but somehow update on the side of my computer of 9.04 ubuntu 9.10 seems to have fixed...

No idea how it worked, I have made no other changes to system register windows virus definition facilities.

    Weird.

    Anyway,.

  • After extending local RAID volume, additional space is not less add storage

    I have a Dell PE2900. It has 6 x 300 GB disks in a RAID5 volume.

The other night, I added 2 extra 300 GB drives for the server, and then using OpenManage, I added these disks to the existing RAID5 volume. At the same time, I decided to convert it to a RAID6 volume. It's a converted / rebuild / not destructive process.

It completed OK (took 2 days to get in the background).

All of the above tasks were conducted with the ESX Server turned on and operation of the virtual computer. No problem here.

When I look at my data stores, the is original VMFS volume 1.36 TB.

When I go to the storage cards section and select the Dell PERC 6 / i adapter, I see 2 volumes of x. One of them is 1.63 TB LUN and the other is 278 GB.

When I return to my data warehouses, I select the TB VMFS 1.36 and select Properties.

In the new window, it shows (see screenshot):

    1.63 TB capacity

    Primary partitions: VMFS 1.36 TB

If I click the button increase here, a new window pops up, but additional 278 GB DOES NOT appear here (window is empty, select No and click Next).

If I try to add a new VMFS volume, the additional GB of 278 also appears (window is empty, select No and click Next).

I haven't restarted the ESX Server again... downtime, I wish I had time for.

Does anyone know of a way to make the ESX Server use the new free space on the disk?

    VCP3 32846

    VSP4 VML-306798

What do you mean by VD? Virtual disk?

    Yes

In the screenshot I provided, however when I try to add a measure is no free additional space available to add?

If there is free space on the SAME logic (or VD) unit number you must use the function growe.

    Or use the CLI vmfstool.

  • Size of the RAID Volume?

I'm new to working with large disks bays and would like some perspectives on the size of the volumes of people together to the top and use.   With disks of 3 x 2 TB in a RAID3 table on a controller from Areca 1880, I have the possibility of a large set of volumes (all 4 to) or several smaller Volumes.

Regarding the configuration of the volume sets, I have the following thoughts on the use of a large single volume:

    • He might end up with a structure to file complicated over time
    • It should always be for Diskeeper to defrag and maintain

My main goal is to use the wide range of storage/output files - o/s and zero will have on others, separate physical drives.

    Thank you

    Bill

    Bill,

Whatever Disk Defragmenter, you use, it will take the same amount of time, or even more, when you have several sets of volumes.

With the help of games of different volumes is as single Disk partitioning, it will not take anything besides more wear and slower perrformance. You have a unique small Bay 4 TB, then, what is the difficulty to keep it organized? I have a table of 10 TB and no problem now organized.

My advice: use a set of simple volumes.

  • "RAID volume is degraded. Dimension E510

I have a Dell Dimension E510, running Windows XP Media Center, I bought in November 2005.

I now have a permanent error message on a pop-up from Intel.  He said that "a hard drive is missing; the system works normally.  However, data protection is no longer available. »

He said as I should be able to rebuild the volume on a disk hard nine, but when I try to do it tells me that 'the hard drive replacement lack of ability to use to rebuild the volume'.

I tried to restore the system using Norton Ghost.  That worked, but does not solve the problem.  Is this likely to be a hardware problem?  What else can I try?

  • Ultra 2 - RAID 0 volume is not expanding

    Hi all

My apologies in advance if this is covered elsewhere, but I don't the have not found.

I have a Ultra-2 with Frontview 4.2.26 (I think it's correct, he is not in front of me now, but this is the last).

I use the disks out of the HD compatibility list.

I used (1) 3 TB drive in a Raid 0 configuration. Now it's time to add another drive and I bought a 4 TB drive listed in the HCL (Western Digital Red, as the first).

I'm ok with the Raid 0 configuration because the contents of the disc is automatically backed up on a Cloud Computing service and works well.

What I wanted to do (or was really hoping would happen), is the addition of the new disk would seem logical and just more disk space for my existing volumes to extend to the. (I have 3 actions: audio, pictures, video).

However, I not give me this option in Frontview.

I appreciate all the advice that my reading of the literature seems to indicate that this is possible.

    Best,

    Stu

What you are wishing to perform is targeted for online capacity Expansion (OCE) which is not supported by the controller RAID H200 shouldn't we support re-taggable picture to allow you to upgrade to 2 TB on the same virtual disk (VD) discs. Make sure you have backup of your data. The only option available to you is to remove the existing VD and create another with 2 TB drives. Re-install the operating system and restore your data.
