Licensing vCenter with SRM

Hi all

I seem to be going round in circles with this question - I have read the documentation and recorded a call with the service the customer on this subject, and the answers are contradictory to say the least...

We seek to implement a SRM solution in a new infrastructure - essentially a management cluster will use SRM failover management of virtual machines to a domain protected to a DC recovery in another city controller.  The DC recovery will be dark for normal operations, only more direct when MRS. failover occurs and will not host virtual machines.

The question I have vCenter licenses of MRS. The documentation states that, during failover of a vCenter server from a site protected for a recovery site hosting any other virtual machines, only 1 vCenter license is required. However the VMware licenses team said the 2 licenses are required for automatic restoration of VMs for the protected site of origin once he recovered.

So, who is? Any thoughts anyone (who is not a dealer or someone trying to sell me licenses)? Happy qualify points if necessary to answer the question...

See you soon.

Jeremy.

the vcenter in Dominican Republic must be put under tension and linked with the SRM server of the RD, in this scenario, it's actually light and 2nd license is necessary.

  • Replication of hot Site DR with SRM

    Hi gurus,

I am designing the SRM solution to a client.

The customer needs to reproduce some vm from main Site to the Site of DR.

Some other vm of the DR Site to the primary Site.

In my opinions we can do with 2 packs of SRM for each site.

I need your advice on how to the vCenter will identify the protected Site and recovery at the same time.

This is a fairly common scenario.

You install RS on both sites, configure replication for necessary VMs and / or LUNS in the desired direction, in case of array level replication install and set up authorities in securities on both sites and then set up groups for protection and recovery for your VMS protected plans.

You need not necessarily "2 packs of SRM for each site. Usually you just need a single vCenter SRM and unique example in each site.

Suppose we have A with VMs vmA1, vmA2, and vmA3 and site B with VMs vmB1, vmB2 and vmB3. Are being replicated virtual machines from site A to site B and vice versa.

    For protection:

-protection for their virtual machines are managing vCenter-a and RS - A, SRM - B holds for VMs vmA1, A2 and A3 recovery plans

-protection for virtual machines B are managing vCenter-B and RS - B, RS - A holds recovery for VMs vmB1, B2, and B3 plans

If customer policy explicitly states that extracted protected site of the VMs should not be started under vCenter even (i.e. If site B fails and VMs vmB1, B2 and B3 must be restarted to site A, customer does not want to live under vCenterA for a reason any) then this would require 2 vCenter and 2 instances of MRS server in each site. Normally, you should be able to avoid this, because that increases the cost and complexity of managing (thinking of buying 2 licenses vCenter for each site). If there are strict insulation requirements, in general, you should be able to satisfy them by using two pools of resources, different vSwitches / exchanges, proper network segmentation, different data stores and possibly multiple clusters.

    I hope this helps.

  • Issue of license VCenter 4.1

No doubt very basic question, but I have a four node cluster running ESX 3.5, managed by a VCenter 4.0 using the old system .lic.  I'm moving this cluster to a VCenter 4.1, which uses the new license key and I was wondering how to handle the transfer of licences to a .lic to a real vmware key I type?  The old cluster will remain in production because I have another cluster that needs to stay on this subject for now.

On a related note, I have another race to vcenter 4.1 Foundation license, three host ESXi 4.1 management mode.  I have an old vcenter running the Enterprise version that performs a few different groups.  I want to gradually move off the former vcenter clusters to the new, but cannot do so until I get an enterprise for my new vcenter license as the Foundation to manage three hosts.  Once I've migrated all virtual machines off the old vcenter I can reuse this license of the company, but until I can do it is there a work around?  Additional guests can be used on the Vcenter Foundation for a certain period of time before they stop working?  Basically I was wondering how best to juggle the licensing vcenter foundation and the company.

    Thanks in advance?

Hello edawg, you must maintain the license during your migration process server for esx 3.5 need this license server.

In the website of vmware, you can access with the registered account and download the new license (if you care), and it should be applied in the new vcenter 4.1.

    Hope that I help you.

I have a ts 2008 license server with 90 per available user licenses (21 already issed). However, users get a message that says that there are no available licenses. The TS are iss device by installing licenses. Local group policy is not configured on each ts. The strange thing is that I can't find the option to license type within the domain group strategy, however, I suspect that this is the problem as when I go through the configuration in the RD Licensing Manager system indicates that the license server will be able to issue per user Cal. If anyone has had / overcome this problem I would be very gratefull to know the solution. Best regards Steve

I have been using my email address to activate many Acrobat 12 facilities as part of my business and my other clients. Is it possible in the site to find a list of the licenses activated with my email address? Even better if he told me the host name of the appliance. I find through other means, but if I can do it over here, it would be much faster.

  • Best practice help to spend again vCenter with linked Clones

    Hello everyone

I searched for days, but couldn't find a way clear of hover over our view 5.2 installation of a new vCenter.  The equipment was aging, and we decided to upgrade and move to 5.5.

We have rebuilt and forwarded via our guests not VDI to the new vCenter 5.5 environment. I found a few documents, but nothing that tells us if it can be done actually.

We tried to go in the service of the composer initially to the new instance of vCenter and maintenance, we do the DB on the old Victoria Cross, if it worked I émigrerait the DB above the new Victoria Cross

We first tried these steps however VMware Documentation Library after removing the old VC service composer and installed on VC New (with ODBC connections mapped to the old VC) it wouldn't work.  We were moving to the VC 5.1 leaving guests ESXi running VDI attached to 5.1

Then I did more research and discovered the related clones are all related to the database of the old VC and moving them is not possible per this KB KB VMware: workstations managed by moving between servers view vCenter is not supported

I saw an article here that suggested dumping a bunch of DB and rebuild the new VC with the same name and IP address, but I can't do so because the new instance is already upwards and on a new host name / IP migrate view VCenter (with linked Clones) to new hardware

I also found this where someone is in the same boat and suggested to recreate pools.  The discussion is not in the details so I wonder if someone can clarify this: migration View Composer and vCenter

I have about 20 people on VDI in a combination of clones using 3 connected pools and personal drives.  Given that all the info from linked clone was linked to the former base of VC, it doesn't seem wise to move it to the wire.  This would be possible: I still have the base image with all the snapshots for each pool.

    • Persistent backup drives
    • Note the configuration of each pool
    • Disable the commissioning
    • Create DB on VC 55 composer vacuum
    • Create the ODBC connection for composer on VC 55
    • **
    • Do more ESXi hosts to 55 VC
    • Remove existing VMs (will be not able to connect to them at this point anyway)
    • Remove the old VC entry admin view / delete existing pools
    • Install the composer on 55, and then tap new ODBC
    • Create new instance vCenter in Admin 55-pointing mode
    • Recreate pools
    • Import and attach persistent disks (http://pubs.vmware.com/view-50/index.jsp?topic=/com.vmware.view.administration.doc/GUID-BDFCCEC8-682F-4421-8810-06108CBE8D20.html)
    • Recreate events empty DB on 55
    • Reconfigure the parameter DB events in Admin mode

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I can't find an exact way to do

Well, I'm pleased to say it worked! I had a few problems by removing existing pools. View repeated deletion but nothing happened. In the end I had to use ADSIedit to connect to the server to manually remove all the old discs VM and pool

After the installation of the composer on the VC 5.5, I was able to create a login in admin mode and then start to re - create the pools.

We were able to successfully reattach each disc persistent owners planned.  Did some spot checks and desktop users, bookmarks etc. all worked

It is a tedious process, but it does not work. I hope that VMware can create an article for it.  God knows that I searched for days, I had to read a lot of things just for this plan.

  • VCloud direction to connect to Vcenter with 3 groups.

    Hi all

We have a vcenter with 3 groups, we want to connect the vcloud Director to a single cluster where we have virtual distributed switch. We want to manage the other two clusters with vcenter. Is it possible to connect a single cluster in vcenter vcloud Director. Also is there any document allowing to learn about how vcloud Director will communicate with vcenter when connecting and after.

    Thanks in advance.

    Kind regards

    Vikram.

Yes, it is possible.  When you create a 'provider' in vCloud Director... you select the Cluster that you want to use as resources gross calculation.  Then, when vCloud Director creates items in this provider, it will be only the cluster you had selected.

The connection is via the SDK for the most part, on port TCP 443.  This is the same as the vSphere client installable.  If you are looking for our KB system there is a diagram of network for reference. (1030816 KB)

  • Limits for vCenter with SQL Express

If you use the built in free MS SQL Express with vCenter so often said that it would limit the size of the environment 5 guests and 50 virtual machines. My question is if it is a "hard" limit that controls vcenter or if it's just a risk to run in SQL Express size limit if you use increasingly large amounts of hosts and virtual machines?

Yes, nothing will stop you, just the limit of size of 4 GB and other normal express limitations as 1 CPU usage only, 1 GB max RAM, etc.

Just watched a small DB vCenter with 9 manageg ESX and ESXi VM of 50-60. It is 6, 6 GB DB size, just for your information.

  • Handle Permissions in vCenter with vCO Workflow

    Hello

I'm changing the permissions of users and roles in vCenter with workflows.

For example, I want to copy permissions from one folder to another. I found the correct object and method: VcAuthorizationManager.setEntityPermissions ().

The problem is that I can't find a way to access the Manager. AuthorisationManager is access through the content property of the ServiceContent object and this object is returned by the method "RetrieveServiceInstance" according to the documentation: http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vc-sdk/visdk400pubs/ReferenceGuide/vim.ServiceInstanceContent.html#field_detail ".

How to call this process? The documentation makes no sense to me because there is no object ServiceInstance in vCO and the ServiceContent object has none of these methods.

I have an example on how to use these objects.

    Thank you

    Irene

    Hi Irene

You can use the SdkConnection.authorizationManager (that represents the permissions for you handler vCenter)

SdkConnection represents a connection to a specific Server vCenter server. You can get all SdkConnection for vCenter servers registered using VcPlugin.allSdkConnections. (VcPlugin is an object that contains a script with static methods)

    Hope this helps.

  • Vcenter merging with SRM

    Hello

Currently, I have two datacenter (DR/DR) running vcenter separated with MRS.

We have plans to consolidate the two datacenter and use a unique vcenter instead of two. and is no longer intend to use RS.

Someone can guide us. Any documentation or reference is very much appreciated.

    Thank you

Not sure on the documentation for this scenario, but what you can do is failover machines virtual site vCenter that you no longer want to use and after the failover, just decommission the SRM.

About uninstall RS, see the documentation: Uninstall Site Recovery Manager

  • assessment of vSphere/vCenter with ESXi license error

I downloaded vCenter assessment and ESXi 4 software.  I installed ESXi 4 on several different physical servers and configuration of the virtual computer on each of these hosts.  Also made free licenses on those hosts.  Then I installed vCenter assessment with a 90 day trial license.  But when I try to add the ESXi host to vCenter console, I get an error license not available to perform the operation.  How can I get past this so I can continue my assessment of this system?  Thank you.

I think that the reason why you can not return to the eval license is because you have ESXi installed for more than 60 days.  Thus, the period of time eval has expired.  I just confirmed that I can return on a new install of ESXi, return to eval mode, while on a more-than-60 days ESXi host, I can't return to eval mode.

Therefore, you need to reinstall in order to get a 60 day trial 'new' period of time, or buy a license with the desired features.

  • Licensing vCenter ROBO issues

    Hello

I just buy a ROBO (25 VM) license key and I wanted to add to my existing vCenter server.

But whenever I added to vCenter I get this error

Does anyone has worked with before ROBO licenses and could you tell me what is the problem? or contact VMware Support?

Which vCenter version you're running and which version license did you buy?

If you're running 5.5 and vSphere bought 6 licenses, you will need to downgrade the license to 5.5.

  • Issue of license associated with vSphere upgrade from 5.5 to 6

I want to improve my environment to vSphere 5.5 to 6.

I have several ESXi servers and 1 vCenter server. Some servers ESXi serving direct environment and a test environment.

I want to upgrade, step by step so, install the new server vSephere and upgrade test environment 6.0 ESXi servers. and then run a few days test environment.

Upgrade needs, I need to convert the license keys to 6.0.

Can I run then simultaneously the two environemts two or three days? (living environment using license keys 5.5 and 6.0 keys environment converted from 5.5 test keys)?

Some key ESXi are used in several ESXi is used according to CPU sockets associated with these keys.

Believe me, it does not, it may seem, but you pile up errors for later.   It would be a better option to generate a vCenter 6 in eval mode and go that route.
