  Okay, there's a little difficulty because Adobe tries to push you to buy the sub CC, so you will need access to this page:

  Then you will see a banner at the top of the unit which has arrows on the left, browse those until you see Photoshop Lightroom, then buy. Try like in this picture:

  

  Select buy, then new or upgrade and do not forget to select the currency you use top-right.

  not a stupid question and the answer is no, there is no need to install lr4 to install your upgrade of lr 5.

  When you enter your lr serial number 5, he will be known as a serial number upgrade.  the installer will check your computer for lr 4.  After failing to find it, you will be asked your lr serial number 4.  Enter and you should be good.

  I never install software from DVD personally. It has usually exceeded and require the upgrade anyway. I just downloaded the latest version online.

  If I understand you correctly, you have 2 separate licenses of x for Lightroom 3, one on each MacBook Pro.

  You could have bought just a copy of Lightroom 3 and used on both. Another purchase was not necessary.

  There is a possibility that you may have to re - authorize one of the Lightroom 3 so that both installs are allowed with the same serial number.

  Yes, you can buy 1 x 6 Lightroom upgrade and use it to upgrade Lightroom 3 on two laptops - as long as the two laptops comply with the system requirements for Lightroom 6 - especially you must be running at least OS X 10.9 on both.
