Limitation of 2 TB RDM on ESXi 5.5

I just bought a 6 TB drive to my house/storage media server. But have a question about the logical ROW of editing. ESXi 5.5 see the complete disc. However as this post and many others, (limit of 2 TB local storage ESXi 5.5 rdm?) I see the same question when mounting the ROW because the apparent limitations of 2 TB for the maximum size of a vmdk file.

I read a lot of conflicting information. According to the doc http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere5/r55/vsphere-55-configuration-maximums.pdf ESXi 5.5 technology should be able to present a single vmdk up to 64 TB. However, all the instructions for the creation of the RDM seem to be limited to the 2 TB limit.

Below is the command I used to create the RDM

vmkfstools - z/vmfs/devices/disks/t10. ATA___WDC_WD60EFRX2D68MYMN0___WD2DWX11D4447554 /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/Raw_Disks/RDM_WDC_WD60EFRX_WX11D4447554.vmdk - a free

Can someone clarify the issue and offer a solution around this limitation?

After testing this out, I can confirm that it works on an ESXi 5.5.0 build 1623387, it also works for Virtual Machines vmx-08.

So for those who have problem with editing > then 2 TB for the local storage of a creat RDM mount vm, but the use of the "-r" not "z".

    Ye sthat is true: you will need to prune the CT 6 in for chucks less which can be recognized by the ESX/ESXi server and let the operating system VMs extend from the doisk.

  • ESXi 6.0 U1 host high CPU (climbing slowly) but VM idle

    I have ESXi 6.0 Update 1 (Build 3029758) installed on new equipment (Atom C2750, 16 GB of RAM).

    VM is Solaris 11.0 with 1 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM.  Solaris was installed from floor-11-1111-text - x 86 .iso without any additional configuration except to install VMware Tools.

    After you start the VM the CPU host shows inactive (12 MHz), but he's slowly climbing 10% per day (240 MHz per day) until she reaches about 95%, while the virtual machine itself becomes unresponsive, however said ESXi virtual machine still works fine.  At each stage the VM reports always that it is inactive.  Restart the virtual machine makes the host CPU to idle (12 MHz) and the slow rise begins again.

    Uptime of the virtual machine:

    In case anyone is wondering, I use Solaris 11.0 because we want to use ZFS with physical RDM to create a NAS for this virtual machine.  Unfortunately, Solaris 11.1 (and above) + physical RDM = purple ESXi screen (see Bug report: 11.1 Solaris + RDM = screen ESXi 5.1 violet).  Apparently, this problem was supposed to be fixed in ESXi 5.5 but still there in ESXi 6.0U1.  I tested (physical RDM + ESXi 6.0U1 + 11.1 Solaris) and (ESXi 6.0U1 11.3 Solaris + physical RDM).  The two combinations result in purple screen.

    It is interesting however, Solaris 11.1 (and above) without physical RDMs does NOT suffer from the slow rise of above host CPU utilization.  So, either I cope with a rise in CPU host weird or purple screens :-(

    In case anyone has the same problem, I solved this superuser.com class.

    In summary, the root cause was a storm of interruption in my Solaris 11.0 VM due to an incompatibility between ESXi and Solaris 11.0 interrupt timing mode.  Add the following line to/etc/System on the Solaris VM solved the problem.

    Set pcplusmp:apic_timer_preferred_mode = 0x0

    Depends entirely on the use case.

    • 2 MS SQL nodes on the same host to see the availability of the software
    • 2 nodes on different hosts to see the availability of the equipment

    I'd say MS Clusters on the same host (at the time of HA and vSMP FT) are redundant VMware features and represent an increase in management fees. The MS cluster on hosts provide something in addition to what VMware vSphere alone can provide!

    Can clarify you what exactly you mean by that? A single management interface are accessible by some many different clients, as long as it is accessible. Are there limits where the client manages the ESXi host from an internal network and you need to access externally via public IP, another for networking?

    In this case your would create a management interface 2nd vmkernel on the external network and to face together the default route of the external gateway routing and insert static routes for the internal network using the internal network gateway. So basically the same thing you would do to any IP multi-hosted system.

    If I'm mistaken, the only limitation with the free 5.5 ESXi hypervisor is the 8 vCPU maximum of VMS and the restrictions for hardware virtual version 9 (5.1 compatibility) with the vSphere Client. Previous versions had all kinds of different limitations, like carrots by socket, physical memory,..., but that all left with the current version.

  • Need advice. Move VM with RDM connections.

    I'm moving A VM with RDM of ESXi 3.5 5 relationships (free Version) using Veeam FASTSCP for vSphere 4.1. I copied the VMX and VMDK files for the C drive only to the new data store in vSphere.  I then tried to add RDM connections for the virtual machine in vSphere.  I get an error on the MAX # of virtual disks supported have been exceeded.

    Notes:

    1. After copying the file on the new cluster, RDM readers VMX appears as a normal virtual disk. x 5 (even though I never copied them on)
    2. Normally, I add the connections of RDM and remove these virtual disks 'Phantom' original and everything is fine.
    3. Storms, this addition is a total of 10 virtual disks, which puts me over the limit.
    4. Y at - it an easier way to move this virtual machine to the new cluster.
    5. Any help is appreciated.

    switch. It comes to our storage network.

    Assuming that there are no bottlenecks elsewhere, what is maximum penetration network traffic that a unique vmxnet3 adapter on a virtual machine can receive network?  It is 10 Gbit/s (gigabytes per second) or 10 Gbps (GigaBITS per second)

    In theory and in the physical world, the maximum data rate would be 10 Gigabit/s, since vmxnet3 emulates a 10GBASE-T physical link.

    This flow is governed by physical limitations and traffic on the wire of the standard, but these do not apply in a purely virtual configuration (vSwitch and port group 2 virtual on the same host and same computers).

    Invited on the same host and vSwitch and port group are able to exceed beyond 10 Gbit/s. I know, we could think that for example the e1000, which has a link from 1 Gbps to the guest, is limited to 1 GB/s maximum. or vmxnet3 is limited to a maximum of 10 Gbps. But this isn't the case. They can easily exceed their "speed of the virtual link. Test it with a tool of network throughput as iperf a see for yourself.

    This is because only the true physically imposed restrictions do not apply in a virtualized environment between two virtual machines on the same host/port signalling group. Operating systems don't artificially restrict traffic to match the speed of the agreed line unless it is physically required.

    To give you an example, I am able to reach 25 + Gbps between 2 virtual Linux machines with a single on the same host/network vmxnet3 vNIC

    For reference, I am able to get 25 + Gbps with the test tool of network throughput iperf between two virtual Linux machines with a vNIC vmxnet3 unique on the same host/port group. (Yes, 25Gbps. Even if a vmxnet3 emule link 10 Gbps, throughput is not artificially capped without physical limitation of signal).

    Once you get to the external communication outside a host then you are limited by your physical host of ESXi links limitations.

    Ho come idea percorrendo the DELL mi ritrovi imprigionato strada che... Imprigionato dal fatto di avere una con 2 connessioni sole di rete ridontate entrylevel SAN da 1 Gbit. (4 + 2 management totali)
    Percorrendo strada IBM invece ho impressed di avere a canale nice technologist e veloce. 2 SAS HBA controller per ogni nodo di 6Gbit. (4 SAS HBA + 2 NIC management).
    Non lo so is mi must impressionare questi valori, mi'd leggere it vostro punto di vista.

    Currently I have a cluster four host sitting at ESX 3.5U4. Earlier in the year, I was about to upgrade to ESX4.0U1. Another project came and he had to wait. Now we fast forward until today and I can see the upgrade happening in the future near semi. But my, how things have changed! I now have a multitude of directions, I can go. I can go ESX 4.0U2, ESX 4.1 or ESXi 4.1.

    I have very limited to the 4.x and ESXi times. No matter what I do, going to 4.x will be a big change. The question I have is the size of a leap to make? Y at - there a big difference between ESX 4.0U2 and ESX 4.1? It of time to bite the bullet ESXi - or would it be?

    Honestly, just talk about operation and reliability, there is no real differences between ESX 4.0U2 (or just ESX 4.0) and ESX 4.1.

    If you use ESX 3.5, is perhaps best to upgrade your 4.1 ESX host directly.  As you say, if you can upgrade to ESX 4.1, upgrading to ESX 4.0U2 would be an unnecessary step.

    In fact, I have some ESX/ESXi hosts on 4.0U1 version and I don't plan to upgrade to version 4.1 in the short term.  Not worth for me.

    However, I have a few ESXi 3.5, and my intention is to upgrade to ESXi 4.1 directly.

    Can someone explain to me the difference between a regular virtual disk and a virtual raw device mapping? When I create the RDM I am just creating a file pointer to the correct virtual file? If yes why anyone would use virtual raw device instead of just mapping to create a typical virtual drive? I understand the benefits and limitations of the physical RDM I just do not understand the goal of the RDMS virtual.

    Well, even if a RDM in virtual mode allows you to use the tricks and VMware snapshots is not always the same thing as VMFS datastore.   As stated previously, you can easily remove this ROW and the provision of a physical server without losing a bit of data or to copy.

    No, you can add more storage to the virtual machine if you want or need it. However, you will need to distribute through several stores of data VMFS virtual disks. HW Version 10 with a virtual SATA controller, you can assign up to 4 x 30 = 120 virtual disks to a virtual machine.

    Hi, I have two hosts ESXi 4.1 and I introduced just an ESXi 5 host to the mix (iSCSI SAN).  All guests can see all LUNS.  I wanted to test the presentation of a new physics-4 to RDM LUN an exisiting VM, but when I try to do, I get the message 'mappings LUN with a capacity greater than 2 TB can be stored on VMFS5 data storage only.

    -No - you can do it with the existing configuration, but the virtual machine would be limited to just the 5 ESXi host.  You will need to create a new data store, present it to the host ESXi 5 and create a vmfs5 data store.

    -No - upgrade is a manual step that you perform on the data store.

    -There is no problem doing this.   If the virtual machine is version 7, you can run the virtual machine on ESXi 4 or 5 of material.  Once that you upgrade the version of the hardware for the virtual machine can only be executed on the host ESXi 5.

    -Yes - RDM physical and data warehouses can exceed 2 TB.   Virtual disks and RDM virtual are still limited to 2 TB.
