Live PC Expert scam?

My safari froze this morning with a window telling me that my computer security has been compromised and give me a phone support and the key number.

A man answered the phone, who shared his name extension and Live PC Expert phone. I google and also Live PC Expert Web site he and seemed legitimate (but now I see the number of support was 1-844-806-6841) The number on the Web site is 1-800-208-0798).

He asked me if my firewall was and he woke me up through the way to make sure. Told me that the fact that it was off meant I can have been compromised. He asked to enter my computer and sent me to a site lpe123.com I believe I was led to so-called Bomgar support and he told me to enter a session number. A chat window appeared then on my screen with him chatting with me and then resume my cursor.

Once inside, he showed me all the activity on my network and some came outside. Then he passed me to a supervisor who tried to sell me on a package of $180 to fix safety today, $260 with one year of storage cloud backup, security software, etc or $400 for two years. At this point I googled Apple and Live PC Expert, and I've seen some comments that it is a total scam. The good news is that I did not pay them anything. The bad news is they got inside my computer.

When I saw the Apple support the comments about it being a scam (which I've been Googling since another computer), I immediately turned off the wifi on the laptop, they were in and offered for the reminder. The supervisor gave me an extension to the main number for Live PC Expert. I immediately (from another computer) changed a few sensitive passwords. I have also all documents saved on an external hard drive.

I saw someone write that I need to wipe my hard drive and reinstall Mac OS. Is this fair? How do I do that? Anything else beside new passwords?

Thank you

Paul

You have two options.  If you use Time Machine, you can restore from a date and time before the incident.  If not, back up your data, erase the HARD drive and reinstall everything.

If your online bank, call the financial institution.  You need to change your password and maybe get new credit cards.

Also change all other passwords as well.

Good luck.

Ciao.
