Local help only wireless

Just moved into the new House and trying to the configuration of the wireless network.  Bought a Wireless - N 300 Router Netgear and I am unable to connect to internet wirelessly (local only).  Internet works when connected directly to the router with ethernet cable.   Is the problem with the computer, modem or router? If it is Vista, why she allows ethernet connections, but not wireless?

Hello

Congratulations with your new home. We would like to know more information on the problem of wireless connectivity. Please answer the following questions.
1. do you get the error message 'Access Local only'?
2. do you have security software installed on the computer?

First cross check if the wireless connection is correctly configured. To do this, follow the steps mentioned in this article:
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/setting-up-a-wireless-network

This also occurs if Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or some non-Microsoft DHCP servers.
Run Microsoft fix by visiting the link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233

Restart the computer after you run this fix and try to connect to the wireless connection.

You can also change the security on your computer firewall settings and try to access the wireless connection.

Please provide more information on what happens when tried to connect to the internet, so that we can help you further.

Kind regards
Syed V

  • Local access only on wireless network

My laptop (Toshiba Satellite L350-203 with Vista SP1 HPE) has lost the ability to connect to the internet using my home network. I have McAfee Internet Security and charge of IE8, but both were present before the problem appeared. My home network is now displayed as 'unidentified public network' and the laptop has "local access only". He seems unable to keep the WEP key for the network as it asks everytime I try to connect. I confirmed that the WEP key is correct. There are 3 other computers in the House that connect without a problem, so I guess that the router is not the source of the anomaly. I tried accessing another network to another place (with any necessary safety information) but get the same result, so that other computers can connect successfully. I am able to access the internet via an account mobile broadband (using a "dongle"), but I added this account after the problem appeared, so once I don't suspect it as being the culprit. Diagnosis in the "network and sharing Center" routines are unable to solve the problem, so any help is most welcome.

    Hello Roy Mac,

Thank you for using the Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.

You receive an error or the error codes when you try to connect?  You're obviously network savy upward so if something seems repetitive please ignore, you tried to delete the location and replace?   Is there any software for the high account mobile broadband that could changed settings?  Are you able to connect to the router with an ethernet cable access to the internet without problem?

A wireless network uses authentication and encryption to help stay secure. Authentication controls access to the wireless network. Encryption helps to ensure that malicious users cannot determine the contents of wireless data frames.  Windows Vista includes a new wireless network configuration setting. The new setting indicates whether a wireless network is broadcast or not broadcast. You can also use the new configuration setting that a Windows Vista wireless client connects to a non-broadcast network.

I've added two links below one for Microsoft and one for the installation of networks and networks the Toshiba site.  Please let us know status.   Thank you!

The software that you used with Windows XP to connect to wireless networks is not compatible with Windows Vista. Alternatively, you can use Windows Vista to configure wireless networks.

To connect to a wireless network in Windows Vista, follow these steps:

    1. click on Start

    Collapse this includes this image

, then click on connection to.

    2. click on the wireless network you want to connect, and then click connect.

Note During the connection process, you may be prompted for a key WEP Wired Equivalent Privacy (). If you do not have this key, contact the network administrator to help wireless.

Hello, I recently changed my broadband provider, and I have a new router, the wireless connection (IPv4) on the display of my laptop displays like local access only and custom to connect to the ' net. Local and internet connection Ethernet fine, work, this isn't a problem with the router online. The previous broadband router connected wireless without problem, my PS3 is connected wireless to the new router, so I think it's something to do with the settings on the laptop. The connector on the laptop wireless is Atheros AR5007. The Wi - Fi connection and show that two separate networks, and the wireless is displayed as a network identified, public. I searched the forums and found a post that said sometimes there are problems affecting the wireless with some routers IP address, but the specific fix has not worked for me. Can anyone help? • local access only - cannot connect to my wireless router

I can't get my laptop to connect to my wireless router, all I get is local access only, but my laptop with windows 7 connects very well.

    Hello

    Maybe this can help.

Most laptops have a physical switch for the wireless card. Read the manual of the computer and make sure that the wireless adapter is on.

Check the Device Manager for the wireless card valid entry.

    http://www.ezlan.NET/Win7/net_dm.jpg

If there is no valid entry, remove any entry from fake and re - install the drivers for the wireless card.

Check network connections to make sure that you have a network icon/entry wireless connection, and that the properties of the icon (right-click on the icon) are correctly configured with the TCP/IPv4 protocol in the properties of network connections.

    http://www.ezlan.NET/Win7/net_connection_tcp.jpg

Make sure that if there is Wireless Utility a utility vendor is not running with the native Windows wireless utility.

Make sure you firewall No. preventing / blocks wireless components to join the network.

Above everything is OK and it connects to the wireless router. Log in from any computer which is, or can be connected to the router with a wire wireless, disable wireless security, make sure that the wireless streaming is enabled and try to connect with no. wireless security.

When the work turns on the Wireless security.

Note * people sometimes make mistakes in writing and retype the password for security.

Another way is to copy in the menu of the router and then paste it when asked of the wireless card.

    --------------------------------------------------

I really checked and configured every thing and it doesn't work.

Software firewall application that is not configured to allow local traffic (between the computer and the router is also a possible problem.
some 3rd party software firewall continue to block the same aspects it traffic Local, they are turned Off (disabled). If possible, configure the firewall correctly or completely uninstall to allow a clean flow of local network traffic. If the 3rd party software is uninstalled, or disables, make sure Windows native firewall is active .

    Hello

I have an Acer Aspire M1610 running Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 and 2 days ago when I turned it on the internet was not working and it says unidentified network Local access only. I use a wired Ethernet connection. I don't know how it happened as before I had used the computer as usual and the Internet worked very well. I did a lot of research and read a few forum posts about this problem and tried a few solutions but non of them worked. I tried the following:
    (1) disable my firewall and anti-virus who didn't work, I turned their back on immediately.

    2) press Ctrl-Shift-Enter keyboard shortcut to run a command as administrator prompt.  Allow the elevation.

Type route delete 0.0.0.0 press ENTER.

    Type ipconfig/flushdns press enter

    Restart your computer.

    (3) the internet protocol version 6 clear, disable and enable the thing

    (4) if same Norton software removal tool I had uninstalled the when I got the computer I read that uninstall it by using uninstall windows is not entirely remove it.

    (5) another thing in the command prompt I don't remember exactly what it was, and I can't find the site Web is because I looked so much of.

    (6) I even reset my computer to factory settings and then uninstalled all unnecessary software and trials that come with and used the software again Norton removal tool.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Any response will be greatly appreciated.

  • local access only: unable to connect to the internet

Recently, my laptop has trouble to connect to my home network. It's a laptop Dell and Windows Vista. This laptop used to connect wirelessly to the network without any problem, but lately, whenever it connects, it is said that "local access" and does not allow me to use the internet. " This problem occurred at the same time I replaced my old router with a new. Another laptop and other devices can still connect to the internet with this new router with no problems, but my laptop stops the message "local access only".

After some research, I discovered that in typing "Cmd" in the search bar after clicking the start menu, run this program as an administrator, type "netsh int ip reset" in the command prompt, then by restarting my computer would fix my problem and my laptop would work very well and connect to the network and to the internet with no problems. However, as soon as my laptop is entered 'sleep' mode or has been disabled, when it was turned on again the problem persists and I have to follow the process of using the command prompt and restart the computer every time I turned on my laptop.

As you can imagine, this process can be quite annoying and I would like to find a more permanent solution to my problem, especially since the past several times, I tried this workaround, it failed, so my laptop is once more without internet access. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be appreciated I am completely puzzled. Thanks for any help.

In addition, you can disable IPv6 to see if that nor does not affect the wireless adapter.

    To disable IPv6:
    (a) go to start, right click on the network, and then click Properties.
    (b) network and sharing window will appear, then click on manage network connections.
    (c) network connections window will appear. Here you can right click on the network adapter that you want to disable IPv6, then click Properties.
    (d) in the local area network connection properties window, clear the Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) check box, and then click OK.

problem with connecting to the internet

whenever I try to connect to my internet I get 'local internet only' and when I try to repair it it says that there may be a problem with your dns server, I looked for a solution for centuries now, and no one can seem to help me! Please someone help me?

    Hello

First off I'm going to assume that when you say "local internet only", you really mean "local only". Also, I'll assume you are using a router for internet connection broadband. If I am wrong, then you will have to describe the answer how you try to connect to the internet more in detail.

First of all, your router. The indicators show that there is an internet connection? Consult the manual, which probably came on a CD with the router. Internet connection led can resemble a planet with rings or a circle with a lower-case i in the middle of it, or some other symbol. It can also have a caption saying 'internet' or 'connected '. If the router is not connected while your PC will not have access to the internet.

Click the Start button and type "cmd" then press ENTER. In the window type (mainly black) which results in ipconfig and press to enter. Transcribe the results of the command ipconfig for a response.

Your (wired or wireless) network card is set to automatically get an ip address? Otherwise, set it to do that and also to get information from DNS server automatically...

    • Right-click on the icon network at the bottom right of your screen, and then click Network and sharing Center
    • In network and sharing Center, click on manage the network connections (on the left)
    • Right click on 'Connect to the Local network' or 'Wireless Network Connection' depending on how you connect to the router
    • Click on select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click the properties button
    • If things are not set to 'automatic', please note all numbers so that you can restore the settings if necessary
    • Make sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" and 'DNS server automatically get an address' is selected, then click OK
    • Click on close

If you are using a wireless connection, what happens if you try to connect to your router with an Ethernet cable?

Please post back with your comments to the above and give more details about your configuration, i.e. router brand and model (or another material of Internet), if you connect wireless or with an Ethernet cable, etc. etc.

I recently had problems getting a wireless connection with my laptop (Pavilion dv6700) running vista. I had previously run it for 2 years without problem, but after returning from Sweden (where there is still no wireless connection problem), I was often only able to get a local access. • Local access only after the Network Systems Security 2009 malware removed

I'll try to put all the details that I can here, but my laptop that has the problem cannot connect to the Internet so I won't be able to copy paste n info. Last week, I was struck with the 2009 malware security systems. It was a pain to remove because it stopped all the work programmes and I could not install malware removal software. Finally beat him by renaming the main program folder 2009 for the security of the systems. That he has stopped working when I restarted the laptop and then I was able to install the malware removal software and took remoped.

Here is the problem. Now that he is gone my network connections wireless and wired no longer work. I get local access only on an unidentified network. I have Windows vista Home premium and use internet with a modem model Cableone cable Motorola Surfboard SB5101.

Then I called a cable tech support first and they could not help and after all the service works very well on my desktop the same modem and connection. So I called Motorola tech support and they had me do a lot of things for hours (including reinstalling the drivers for the modem) on the phone without effect. Finally, they suggested that I have re-download all ACER Aspirion z9410z drivers and reinstall them. So I did it. Copied to a flash of my desktop drive and reinstalled them. No luck.

The respectable and sharing Centre, explains that the modem works correctly when you look at the status. But the auto for windows diagnostic tool says to check the IP settings automatically and reset the network card. The two fail to trouble when ran. Here are all the parameters of the network connection.

    Physical address: 00-1A - 66 - AA - 64cB
    Active Yes DHCP
    Autoconfiguration IPV4 address 169.254.195.250

    FEC0:0:0:FFFF:3 1%

IPv4 and 6 are defined automatically detect the IP address and the DNS.

Hope that gives enough information. There no mater if I use eithernet and USB to connect or wireless. I have the same problems.

Another thing that can be part of the problem.

It started after removing the systems security 2009 malware as well.

When loggin, turned off the laptop, a blue error screen appears. Here are the details generated for it. I'm working on the research of which the question is to be set by the online search.

I hope I will get this fix as well.

    Hello Oxilas,

I suggest that you use a friend/co-worker Vista DVD and do a repair installation.

    Repair facility:

You can reinstall your copy of Vista while keeping your files, settings and programs by performing a repair install or an upgrade on the spot with the following steps: (Note: this still does not resolve all problems, especially if the corruption was caused by a 3rd party program or service, you may need to do a clean install) (if this is not successful.)

    <><><><><><><><><><><><>

Please make sure that you back up all the important data before you continue. Please visit: methods for your backup files.

Always make sure that you have the means to reinstall your programs, or by an installation disc or access to the installation files.

    <><><><><><><><><><><><>

    1. Insert the Windows installation disc in your computer's DVD or CD drive. You must start Windows installation while running your existing version of Windows.

    2. on the Install Windows page, click install now.

    3. on the get updates for installation page, we recommend getting the latest updates to help ensure a successful installation and to help protect your computer against security threats. You will need an Internet connection to get the installation updates.

    4. on the Type your product key for activation , we strongly recommend that you type your 25-character product key in order to avoid problems during activation.

    5. on the page Please read the terms of the license , if you accept the license terms, click I accept the terms of the license.

    6. to the which type of installation you want? page, click upgrade to begin the upgrade. You can see a compatibility report.

    7 follow the instructions.

Note: If your installation disc doesn't include SP1, and you are updated, then you must uninstall it before proceeding with an update install. Start-> Control Panel-> programs-> see installed updates, then select Service Pack for Microsoft Windows and click on Uninstall.

Note: Tit the following settings is reset by default:

    Its computer system

    Device drivers

    Visual effects

    Windows Mail

    Windows services

If you notice missing files after the upgrade, look in the following folders:

    C:\Windows.old

    C:\$INPLACE.~TR

    C:\$WINDOWS.~Q

These files can be eliminated with disk cleanup as "records destroyed by upgrade to Windows".

Can anyone help?

    Hi, Phil:

What model network adapter do you have in your laptop?

Perhaps a driver update is required for your wireless card work with your new router.

If you have the Atheros AR5007 wireless card and the driver date is before 2010, I can almost guarantee you that is the question.

Please see my thread on the link below.

  • Broken WRT54GL? (Local access only)

I had this WRT54G for about 6 or 7 years at this point and have never had a problem with it.

Yesterday all THE devices on the network boot is more access to the internet, I have 1 physical connection and the rest of the devices are wireless, none of them can access the internet. I have the automatic DHCP configuration so I do not understand why there should be problems on this small network. My cable modem is fine and gets the signal from my carrier and when I connect on the web interface on the router I can actually ping and tracert very well on screen diagnosis for the router itself has clearly internet access, but none of the devices on the local network only.

I have confirmed that they have all valid IP addresses, assigned by the DHCP service, all can ping the router very well. I emptied the caches dns, release / renewed addresses, reset the cable modem and the router on 6 times each, still nothing. I also updated the firmware today (4.30.11-> 4.30.17), the update was successful, but it has not fixed the problem.

And just to show there were no changes to the network or anything, just out of the Blue yesterday nothing on the network could access the internet. That's what makes me think of the router itself is broken and needs to be replaced. Willing to listen to the advice of troubleshooting, but I already have a lot of it.

Hi dankmemer. You said to make an update of the firmware, did you do a hard reset just after that? You reinstall the settings from scratch? The reset will ensure that the new firmware will synchronize with the new settings. To make the correct reset, please press the reset button on the router for 30 seconds while the unit is turned on. Release the button and unplug the unit.  Given that the unit will return to the default settings, re - install the settings from scratch.

If the same thing happens, then it may be best to check our latest range of routers. Six years of service should be good enough for the present.
