  • Lost admin privileges

    De :  Richard

I am running Vista Ultimate on a Dell XPS laptop. I seem to have lost (my own PC, no other account) administrator privileges. All functions with the shield of little beside them seem to be disabled. For example, I can change the image associated with my account not the name, cannot manage other accounts and can not turn off UAC.

Everything was OK for a few months, but then I had a series of questions that may or may not be connected.

First Sotware Apple update has stopped being able to automatic update software. He would warn me, but I'll be back on the decision to proceed with the download of the program myself to update available screen. I could download and install the software in hand and iTunes isn't mission critical if it wasn't much.

Then Windows Update started having problems. I am informed of updates and once that I ask him to install it comes back immediately with an obscure error code that does not come to the top with an update failed message and error code 800401E4.

Cannot get anything useful from Google and MS Support (free for service Pack1 which I think could have directly behind the issue) have been of no use. They tried to rename some of the software download directories (c:\windows\system32\catroot? and another) who seems to force Windows Update to reassess what has been installed, but still gave the same question once you try to install a hotfix.

I managed at least 1 occaision to download an update and install them manually. I'm also sure that at least one occaision he downloaded a update critical automagically from one day to the next day and installed itself.

These days, I noticed a couple of other questions that may or may not be connected. I think it is perhaps down to my user account lose admin rights and I don't know if it's behind the issues WU. I'm unable to create a new user or change my account or name of one of the functions with the shield of little beside them. I am also unable to change automatic update settings for example download and install automatically when I'm actually on the PC.

By clicking on one of these elements does absolutely nothing - no display on the screen of error/warning/attempt.

I don't know if these two things are related, but would obviously help in fixing either / both of them.

What happens if you use this account? It always has full administrator rights.

If nothing else, you can use it to remove your another user/admin account.

  • How to add "Debug programs" privilege to my administrator account?

    Hello

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium with the administrator account.
For some reason, I need to add "Debug programs" privilege to my account.
To be more precise, I use a little program called Daphne. It's a kind of replacement for Task Manager (watch and process management and a few other useful features). But whenever I start to Daphne, a small window pops up telling me that Daphne has need of privileges "Debug programs" in order to show the list of all the processes. There is possibility to go, by clicking Yes, the button for the site where the process of adding user rights is indicated in a very understandable way (http://www.drk.com.ar/docs/windows/adding_user_rights.php).
    Here it is:

Adding user rights on Windows XP.

To see the list of complete process on Windows XP or more, you may need to add the privilege "Debug programs" to your user account.

    1. run the "local security setting" administrator by typing "secpol.msc" in the race... possibility of yout menu start.
    2. expand the tree by clicking on the element "local policies".
    3. Select the item of "user rights assignment".
    4. double-click on the option "Debug programs" in the right panel.
    5. click on the button «Add a user or group...» ».
    6. Insert the username and click the button "check names".
    7. click OK and close all open windows.
    8. you will need to restart your session.

Very clear indeed. But I am using Vista, if these instructions became unusable for me. I'm stuck at the first step: when I type "secpol.msc" in the run dialogue box I get the message saying "Windows cannot find" secpol.msc'... etc. "" of course, I've tried other solutions but I couldn't find even something similar to the element "Local policies", let alone "User rights assignment" or "Debug programs" option.

Some of you may be wondering: why I'm posting on this forym? Why didn't I ask in the forum of the seller?
Of course, I did (http://forum.drk.com.ar/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=47). But guess what - the Site Administrator (who is the author of)
Daphne) replied that he did not use Vista and it gave me some other instructions which he found on the WEB:

"I do not use Vista, but I found this on the web:
To manage debug privileges go to:
Control Panel > administrative tools > local security policy > security settings > local policies > user rights assignment
Or you can run gpedit.msc. »

Waste of time: first of all, in my administrative tools, there is nothing even similar to the 'local security policy '. And second, when I type "gpedit.msc" in Run dialog I get only a message - «Windows cannot find 'gpedit.msc'...» »
So I came at the beginning again.

I searched the whole WEB and can't say I have not found anything that privilege "Debug programs", but all I found, it was quite incomprehensible to me. And my English is not very good, as you will probably notice. I'm just a poor beginner who needs perfectly clear step by step instructions and: How can I add privileges "Debug programs" to my account to administrator in Windows Vista Home Premium?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

    Charlie

    Hi Martin,

I appreciate your trying to help me, but if you had read my post carefully, you'll notice that I already said that I couldn't use "secpol.msc" because when I type secpol.msc Run... dialogue and press ENTER, I still get the same message:
"Windows cannot find"secpol.msc". Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again."

So, is there another way to access the local security policy?
Maybe "secpol.msc" runs under Windows XP, but I'm on Vista Home Premium.

With regard to your recommendations to use some different programs for the management of the process - I'll check out them.

    Sincerely, Charlie...

  • is it possible to give all administrator privileges to another administrator account other than the original administrator account?

I created another account to administrator and I deleted the original (which was set in place when I got my computer) and kept the original files. I was then going to use my new administrator as the main account. I tried to install and update to an application and he said I have peut not be able to download all the updates, because the original was the one that installed applications. So in a sense, there are some applications and programs I am not able to change, delete, or update.

Can I GET all THE THE ADMINISTRATOR of the ORIGINAL FOR this NEW ACCOUNT of ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT PRIVILEGES?

    Hi Juneilj,

You need to reinstall all applications of this new account.

  • How to get back to the user account administrator privileges?

Original title: lost the privileges on the computer at home. How ca I get it back?

I am the only user on my home computer, using Windows 7 Professional. When you turn on the computer, always offered welcome my administrator screen and waited for a response and normal user accounts before continuing. Rarely need to log on as an administrator and have to go back to the computer just to press a button before it continued its long initialization has been frustrating. Want to remove the log on option user I did it via the Control Panel [don't know how, now!] so now I can turn it on and let it start in his own good time without further interaction from me, which is great.

What is not big, is that I lost all administrator privileges, then any time the area UAC appears asking if I want to continue with the program and I need to answer YES, it won't let me as the Yes box is grayed out.

The management of the computer control panel, I can get local users where I can see that my backup Administrator account is disabled. If I click on the box to reactivate the account, access is denied, so I can not turn on the account.

Help, please!  I would really think my administrator account to return once again, without having to turn off every time.

Thank you for your expertise in advance.

    Dave

    Here you go:

    1. Set your BIOS so that it uses the DVD drive as its primary boot device.
    2. Start the computer with your Windows 7 repair CD.
    3. Press a key when prompted to boot from the DVD.
    4. Select 'PC Repair' in the menu.
    5. Select 'Repair' when prompted.
    6. When you are prompted, select System Restore.
    7. Configure Windows to a point before you made the change.
    8. Plan ahead a little and create, test and document an alternative admin account, same as you have a spare emergency House key. This will save you a lot of trouble.

  • Windows XP Professional /administrateur privledges

I have windows XP Professional and I lost administrator privledges and can not remove or add software.  How to establish administrator privledges to add and or remove software?

How do you know that you have lost the privilege of administrator?  Many programs will set up an error saying you need the administrator privileges at the first sign of any trouble.  Many times it is because of something other than that.
Quick test: right click on the button 'start '.
If "Open All Users" is one of the options that opens, then you have administrator privilege.

How to recover depends on how you lost the privilege (deactivation of the only administrator account, it's a way, forget your admin password is another).  With a little more information, we can push you in the right direction.

  • Can't install or uninstall anything that requires administrator-level access in Windows 7

I searched for hours here looking for information on how to correct this problem and have not found a description of the problem that matches mine.  If the answer is already here, please forgive my lack of the needle in a haystack and point me in the right direction.  The operating system in question is Windows 7 Home Premium x 64.

First of all, the troubled computer is not mine.  It belongs to a friend.  (Norton) antivirus protection has expired some time ago and they now no protection.  I would like to uninstall this program and install a new program of antivirus protection for them.  When I Spear 'uninstall' it in program folder tells me that I have Admin Access.  The account I use is the only account never implemented and the admin account.  There is no password admin, and there is no password for the account.  I know... There are SEVERAL rules of common sense here that were broken, and I'm trying to fix all the.
I have tried to create a new administrator account using the User Manager and have the same problem.  I saw a suggestion about the click with the right button on the choice of the menu and choosing "run as Administrator".  I have not tried yet since I'm not near the computer at this time.  I'll try to make it tonight.  Even if it works... I am always faced with the same problem of having to reactivate somehow the rights of Directors in general.
I saw elsewhere deliver once before and ended up reloading the system.  It was riddled with viruses.  I hope that I am not against this situation.
Thanks to the community in advance for your efforts to help me solve this puzzle and research!

This is the only account that has ever existed and the User Manager identifies it as an administrator account.  I suspect that this account has lost its privileges admin somehow, be it corruption of any nature or virus.

You run a show at high risk, while having one single administrator account. It's like having a key for your car. A glitch is all that it takes to create a big problem, but it is so easy to create a second admin account.

Find it me difficult to reconcile some of the apparently contradictory statements in your report. If it was my machine, then I would do this:

    1 disable UAC
    2. restart the computer when you are prompted.
    3. click on start.
    4. type the three letters cmd in the search box and press enter
    5. type the following commands and press ENTER after each:
NET user 'Jack' xxyyzz / add
(to create a new account named Jack with a password of xxyyzz)
    net localgroup administrators/add ' Jack'
(to promote the account of Jack at the Admin level)
    net users
(to see a list of all existing accounts)
    6. turn on UAC.
7 restart and log in as Jack.
    8. check if you still have problems.
    9. If they, restart in Mode safe and check things once more.

I use Windows 7 64-bit, and whenever I log on as a standard user on my PC, I strangely have the privileges of an administrator. I can manage accounts, install software, and many other things without being arrested or even invited by the UAC.

    Hi LannX,

I suggest you scan your computer with the Microsoft Security Scanner, which would help us to get rid of viruses, spyware and other malicious software.

The Microsoft Security Scanner is a downloadable security tool for free which allows analysis at the application and helps remove viruses, spyware and other malware. It works with your current antivirus software.

    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner ends 10 days after being downloaded. To restart a scan with the latest definitions of anti-malware, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Important: During the scan of the hard drive if bad sectors are found, the scanner tries to repair this sector, all available on which data may be lost.

Let us know if that helps.

There are a lot of options built into Windows to help you out of this situation:
    • Restart the computer with your Windows repair CD, then use system restore to set Windows in a few days (only works if you have recently changed the password).
    • Log on to your account admin to spare, and then reset the password for your existing account (works only if you set up an alternative admin account).
    • Log in as administrator mode without failure, then reset the password for your existing account (the password is usually empty).
    • Use the password indicator (only works if an indicator was created and if it's good enough to allow you to guess the password)
    • Check your paper files (works only if you threw down the password somewhere)

Also note that the password reset disks must be tested immediately after their creation. Otherwise, how can you be sure they work?
