Lost serial number of origin of the product, update is now unusable

I initially bought CS3, then updated to CS4 in 2010 (purchased directly from Adobe). Three years ago I started using the creative cloud, but I can no longer justify the monthly fees. So I re downloaded CS4 from my products, entered serial number as asked and... has been asked to enter the serial number CS3 form. I do not have. According to Adobe, my only option is to buy the software again. Is there a way to get around this?
