  My iMac (late 2012 if I remember) restarts when under heavy load for a while.

  I work a lot with Final Cut Pro X.

  Whenever I have add clips in an event, Final Cut allows you to copy and then transcode and analyze the clips, and this task's CPU/GPU intensive (Final Cut Pro X uses OpenCL, where CPU/GPU). After a few seconds, the iMac fan begins to be really strong and seems to reach its maximum speed.

  Then, after a few minutes of this heavy burden, the iMac simply restarts, and the fan slows down and stop. After the reboot, everything is back to normal, with the exception of the warning illustrated by Mac OS X, who said that the closure was not planned.

  I'm sure that this behavior is not normal. I don't see why a computer should reboot/crash when under heavy load.

  Note: you can also, to transcode some clips or movies I used the excellent software called Handbrake, using CPU only encoder ffmpeg, and I don't remember having accidents even if the CPU has been loaded and FAN running loud too. So maybe it has something to do with GPU?

  How can I understand what is happening?

  I'm running an Early 2011 Macbook Pro running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 with a 2.2 GHZ Quad Core i7 processor 1 TB Samsung 840 EVO SSD and 16 GB of RAM Crucial. I noticed for about a month, I'm going to do a simple task or two on my Mac, then all of a sudden I noticed spikes CPU temporary, 90 + degrees C and the kick of fans trying to cool high speed. Well, I don't know why this is happening when I do nothing to justify a high utilization of the processor. I'm used to the CPU running hot when I do something intensive graphic as running Autodesk Inventor CAD software, run a machine virtual or even watch a 1080 p @ 60 fps video on youtube (it is the lowest resolution that requires the Mac switch to the dedicated AMD Radeon 6750 M GPU that usually eventually warm it quickly) , but this use high random that happens when I have Mail open in the background, and one tab open with a 720 p @ 30 fps video Youtube open (or even less). I took a few screenshots of the activity Manager indicating the best processes and Intel Power Gadget indicating the temperature of the CPU:

  The most likely cause is an applicztion you have running that is corrupt and forcing them to use the CPU too. Were you able to kill the process in activity monitor? If you have not yet tried to do, so I'll try that first. I would also try to quit all open applications.

  If you start the computer in Safe Mode , you can test if the problem is still there. If it isn't, usually means something that is managed by you start-up or an application that you use may be the cause.

• Z220: The CPU utilization high idling: how to troubleshoot?

  After a really long survey on Windows 7 drivers and others, HP advanced support Tech became convinced (as I pretty much was all the long...) that there actually is a hardware in-game problem: motherboard or the CPU.   The excellent technician sent by HP thought the CPU was a good place to start: it replaces, and as soon as voltage, all high utilization of the processor issues disappeared! I've been running the system for some hours, after reinstalling my extra system memory and card over-pants V4900 and the CPU is idle to 0-1 percent, with System Idle Process typically in 98-99 percent. Idling system interruptions now consume less than 1% of the CPU usage. Why this processor (i5-3470) spent all of diagnostics from Intel without a blip is a mystery to me.
