LR Catalog backup hang up - hours

Hi-

I never backed up my catalogue - Yes, you heard right. Everytime I try, it goes 2 hours or more and I finally vanish. I have a ton of pictures, so don't know if this is the problem, but it's frustrating and I don't know if this is normal. It happens about 3/4 full and then crashes.

I want to spend 5.7 LR to CC, that is why I want to make sure I have a good backup, but don't know what to do.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Theresa

To save the catalog LR just file make a copy of it on an external drive. The Catalog backup copy not all images. You should do that yourself by copying all your images on an external drive.

The problem you are experiencing probably has something to do with file permissions.

What is the catalog file (not pictures)?

Lightroom CC 2015 to zip the backup catalog file, it should be much smaller. So, based on what you said, I see no evidence that something has gone wrong.

  • Catalog backup problem

Save my catalog takes hours... An incremental save after adding just 1 foto has taken more than 1/2 hour. That's why I want to use Acronis that is much faster. I save the photos and I have record catalog information. It would be OK if I save c/programs/adobe for the catalog?

You mean: save your catalogue and your image folders tree takes hours. Yes, it's time to write a copy of everything to a new location. It takes about the same time the first time you do this "backup" with all software, including Acronis (I use Acronis). Incremental backups in the items are not very fast.

That's why I want to use Acronis that is much faster. I save the photos and I have record catalog information.

The catalog information is stored in a folder of catalogue (with the name of the catalog). Use the Help menu > information system to find its location and its size. It is by default in a folder in the Windows Explorer, so you will need to "show the hidden files and folders". Because the catalog does not contain file image, its size is small enough to be copied or backed up very quickly. You can do this from the Explorer or, why not, by Acronis.

It would be OK if I save c/programs/adobe for the catalog?

The main purpose and the advantage of Acronis is that it can restore an entire disk, including the main one with Windows and your training programs to another disk in the case of migration of crash or computer drive. I do full backups in Acronis at intervals. It is a comprehensive solution, not only a solution for my photos, catalogues and library.

You can also selectively, use Acronis backup folders, disks or partitions.

The big advantage of the backup/restore of the Organizer, is that it can restore catalogue and the library to another drive or computer, while keeping the links in the catalog to the new location of the files restored photo. If you library and backup separately catalog file and restore to a new drive or a computer with a different backup system, the links will be lost, and all the files are displayed as "missing" or "disconnected". The backup of the Organizer also invites you to convert the catalog to a new format of version if necessary. If you use Acronis as a utility "clone", your readers will be restored completely with all of your other programs and data, no problem to reconnect, but it will be not much faster.

If you want a backup strategy to be able to save a lot of time (which means more security...), you can use several methods together like me.

-J' using the Windows 'Syntoy"tool to sync my library and my catalogs on an external drive. Once the first synchronization is performed, the update after an editing session is extremely fast. Who does not update the links in the catalog, but it is fine if I "sync back" to the original disk even.

-At intervals and when I know I have to migrate to another drive or computer, I do a full backup of the Organizer.

-Intervals, when I have the time, or after you install new software, I also create full backups of Acronis; which saves everything, but that takes time. This is the solution for all my programs and data, not only for my library and catalogues.

    Edit:

Who does not update the links in the catalog

I mean that if I restore it on the same drive, the links will be kept, but if I restore on a new drive or the computer, the links in the catalogue art always the old drive...

  • Problem opening CC/6 Lightroom Catalog backup.

I use Lightroom CC/6 and my backup catalog on an external hard drive.  When I try to open the compressed backup file, I get a message that says: "Lightroom cannot use this catalogue named"Lightroom Catalog"because it is not writable and cannot be opened."  I must do something wrong and I am unable to open the backup files?

    wobertc wrote:

You must decompress it, a ZIP, take out of the Zip file is located, before trying to open it.

Preference then copy and paste it to the same location where your 'master' catalogue previously worked.

This keeps the database links in the catalog to your images. (and avoids the problem of the use of a catalog of your backup as your 'master' catalogue location).

    Read this link:

That is easily solved by having the option catalog by default in the set preferences or the real of the real catalog path, mine is D:\Lightroom 6 Catalog\Lightroom 6 Catalog.lrcat, or have imposed on the most recent catalog. With this second, and by default, the set LR option will start with the last catalog that has been opened. All you have to do is to re - open your real catalog file > open catalog (and it will appear in the list box menu to open the recent item).

  • Lightroom crashes after closing and the Catalog backup. Requires "Force quit" on OSX El Capitan (10.11.1). (Both set to upgrade to this week.)

Hello. I upgraded OSX earlier this week in the latest version of El Capitan. Not using Lightroom since then I think. This morning, LR wanted to update and I let him. Now, LR crashes when I close and let him make a backup of the catalog. I use oSX 'force quit' to close. Otherwise he not re-open.

Can you please have a look at this issue?

PS I spotted the new import dialog. Can't say that I like that too. I don't know that I'll get used to it.

See this thread Lightroom CC (2015.2.1) requires force quit since the upgrade to El Capitan.

Hi, I have just updated to Windows 10 and now Lightroom CC freezes after I edit a photo in NIK Dfine and try to send the photo in Lightroom.  When I rerstart Lightroom, the returned file is there, but freezes Lightroom is I try to do anything.  In addition, Lightroom will not work with my previous backups of the catalog.  Any suggestions?  Thank you

    Hi stevec.

Please go the Edit option in the library Module, then go in the preferences.

Go to the performance tab and uncheck the option "use graphics processor.

Restart lightroom, and then see if LR works.

Please let us know if it helps.

    Kind regards

  • I can't open all my catalogs backup.

I get "error opening unwanted catalog" or I get "Lightroom can't use the catalog named xxxxxxxx because it is not writable and cannot be opened.

I've been with Lightroom since Version 2 and never had this kind of problem before, not being able to open the backup catalogs.

@ I started with Photoshop LightroomLr CC two weeks ago.

    Using Windows 7

I couldn't open my backups as zip files creates the new LR are not recognized by my decompression software.  I'm sure you have already checked the files are decompressed, but if you have not you may need to check and, if necessary, get a new decompression software.

  • the uncompressed with 6 Lightroom Catalog backup

It is said that Lightroom 6 compress the backup of the catalog in a zip file.

When I try with a small test catalog it works very well.

However when I backup my real catalog (75 000 photos, 7.5 GB) the file is not compressed. LR6 behaves exactly like the LR5.

I tried several times but it's always the same.

Do you have anyone encountered the same problem?

    Any advice?

    Thank you.

    Michel (Paris)

    Jao,

Unlike the previous version, Lr6 creates a compressed zip file when the backup is performed.

  • The Catalog backup fails

    Hello

I am trying to create a backup of my adobe photoshop elements 7 data so that I can transfer it to a new computer. I have not saved to in the prior application.

The old computer is a Windows Vista with 7 elements. I tried to repair the catalog and optimizing it. In accordance with the following instructions:

Troubleshoot catalog | Organizer | Items 6 and later versions

The only aspect that I had not done a check the box 'Re-index of Visual similarity data", who do now, just wait on that at the end I can see if that solves the problem.

The problem I have is that when I asked him to back it up, he came to 5.05 GB and stops and I get a generic message saying there was an error. No code, no indication of what to do...

The new computer is a Mac with 13 elements. I had tried before writing all data from keyword/tag for export of keywords and albums and photos and then import into the new computer. It did not work (albums were empty). I understand reading online that it may not be the only data lost if I can't transfer the catalog...

    Then...

    • can I manually back up the catalog and upload it? (I found the catalogue under "all users > Adobe > Photoshop elements > catalogs ', is it possible to simply copy the folder (4 GB)?)
    • can I upgrade the version of photoshop elements at 13 on the old computer and try to convert the catalog and then save? or will it get worse?
    • I have to give up and surrender account that I have lost all the album and related information?

    Thanks in advance!

For anyone else who sees this... I've updated the software on my PC using a trial version of Photoshop Elements 9. I converted the old catalog of PSE 7 through 9. Then I backed up the catalogue of the PES 9.

From there I could restore the backup of PES 9 to 13 PSE on my Mac.

  • Problem of items 10 Catalog backup

I am backing up my catalog on external hard drive. I get the message "calculation total media size" it is 88% and then stay there forever. I repaired, optimized and reconected the missing files.

I have about 30000 pictures all very well organized and tagged, I want to support all external drive without losing any work on their organization. Can you please help?

My guess is that there is a particular file 'problem' in your photo files.  Several cases have been reported with such 'frozen' always the same percentage of size calculation.

Offending files are often especially those video or files with incorrect characters or extensions of files (several points, slashes...)

Since you have already repaired and optimized, you can try the following:

-Locate your catalog on your computer: in the Help menu option information system, you get its location.

-Make a copy of the catalog (database and accessory files): it's all the folder containing the database 'catalog.pse10db '. Name the new folder something like "my copy catal. You can use it like the original one by double-clicking the catalog.pse10db file.

-Use this catalog, select ONLY video files in the view menu, and then delete them catalog, NOT from the walk, of course.

-Try the backup without the video files.

According to your results, we'll see what we can do next.

  • Catalog backups

Is it possible to make a manual backup of the file catalog in another LR4 to have invite you when you exit the application?

Thank you in advance for your help!

The only time where backups occur is when you exit Lightroom.

You can set Lightroom to save your catalog whenever you go out and use it as a kind of "manual backup".

  • If you move files to an external drive in PSE 7, are these backup files when you catalog backup

My catalog is now about 50 GB and I want to decrease its size so that it takes up less space on my hard drive, and more important, so my backups and restorations do not take as long.    Files are not to be modified in the future then why keep saving them?  If I move the files on an external drive using files offline, copy/move files on the removable disk will be backup items these files as well as files on my C drive when I backup my catalog?

If not, can I move files to a new catalogue and catalogue of dangerous data (such as albums, tags, etc.)?

    Thanks for any help.

    function() {return A.apply (null, [this] .concat ($A (arguments)))}

When restore you to the original location on the destination computer, the fact that restoring average the same path where the files were on the source computer?

    Yes, the exact same path.

    function() {return A.apply (null, [this] .concat ($A (arguments)))}

I used this option once when I saved on my XP computer and restored to my Vista machine.  It took me a long time to get rid of extra files generated by Vista.

If you're moving from XP to Vista and your records are under C:\Documents and Settings\, Vista will create aliases to your user folders to maintain compatibility (since Vista has a different naming convention for the files of the user).  Vista itself will not create additional folders, but programs like the PES can be confused by having two different names for the same file.

    function() {return A.apply (null, [this] .concat ($A (arguments)))}

I now store everything (files catalog and photos) in a folder with the same name under C:\ on both computers.

As long as it is not under C:\Documents And Settings, then use the original location option to restore to the same exact path.

The option new location / Restore Original Folder Structure will preserve your folder hierarchy, but create very long paths by adding in the root files, for example \users\ellis\pictures and it is difficult for many people to collapse these unnecessarily added files.

  • RMAN - Catalog backup

Can I back up my database using RMAN catalog? Oracle 10.2.0.4.

I connected with the database catalog rman and target being the same and then registered the database target - no problem. It is a development environment and therefore does not operate in archivelog. So the available backup method only for me is an rman backup cold - start going up the target and take backup from there. The problem is that if I get only the catalog of database rman complains when connecting. Is it possible to have your catalog and the target so the same database and backup using rman?

    Thank you all,

If your database is in noarchivelog mode, not possible to have the rman backup...
You can provide hot backup manual or keep this on both the archivelog mode and configure for rman backup.
