Maintenance - VMotion mode single host?

If I HA and DRS in fully automated and I put a host in maintenance mode will all be moving VMS to multiple hosts or they will move to a single host, then DRS to multiple hosts? We have 23 hosts in the cluster.

Thank you

DRS will load balance the guests on the other hosts in the cluster.

  • Update / fixes ESXi single host with VCSA running on it.

We have just updated since the free version of ESXi 5 by ordering the Kit of Essentials. In the process, of course, we were able to deploy vCenter Update Manager (which has been the main motivation, like patching manually the free version seemed to be quite a pain). We have a Windows host that has installed the Update Manager, and we have a VCSA running on the single instance of ESXi, we deployed to date. We were able to install the plugin on the viClient and scan the ESXi host for patches with success (a need a good number). But, we're stuck trying to install the patches... us when trying to restore the host, we get: "the operation is not supported on the selected inventory items. Check events for the objects selected for the operation.

    The host says:

Looking at this logic, for the host switch to maintenance mode, the VCSA should have been suspended (apparently, actually moved), which would avoid in turn patches / updates to the deployment. Am I correct in thinking, that we have a second host and networked storage? Made a Kit Essentials / license provide for the possibility of vMotion from one host to another? It wasn't really clear... Yes, the web site says "vMotion" is included in most Essentials, but find it me hard to imagine any point to a facility in ESXi stream without the ability to vMotion between one system and another guest...

    Welcome to the community,

And since you have only an ESXi host and your vCSA is running on this host, you cannot patch this host with Update Manager for reason that already know you: the host should be the maintenance mode.

Add about another host, with Kit Essentials without vMotion functionality, you can try using a data store of shared storage between two hosts, stop the vCSA on first host and switch the vCSA on the second host... and finally the first host patch.

  • Without change to the FC switch to mode mode end-host FC

In the window of maintenance last night, I was going to spend one of my systems UCS switch FC FC end-host Mode. The intention was to be able to reach the storage systems via an external FC SAN, instead of the current situation where storage is directly attached to the FIs. The UCS system in question is redundant fabric 6248UP of interconnections, blades are all of the B200M2 or the B200M3, and infrastructure (UCSM, FIs and IOM) running version 2.2(3a).

The plan was relatively simple. First of all, I would like to change FI B mode end-host FC. Once this has been done re - I would record vHBAs the blades attached to the fabric B in my storage system, so that they could access their storage via the external SAN. Then I go through all the blade servers and ensure that they had access to storage multipath healthy and tolerant, how I would like to repeat the process for FI.

It turned out to be a disaster, however. Once I started the process of change FI B FC end-Host mode, FIs times restarted, and all servers access storage and network. When they came again, both of them had changed the fashionable end-host FC, which means that none of the blades had access to their storage volumes more. So there is nothing to do but to return the change. Yet once, two FIs restarted at the same time and they both returned to the top in switching mode of CF. A few hours later, after have rebooted most of blade servers and cleaning applications having failed, we were in normal production.

So what I was asking here why on Earth the two of my FIs restarted at the same time. Is this a known bug? The user interface would certainly think one can ignore at a time as I had planned, because the CF implemented end-Host Mode action link is on the page of each individual FI in UCSM (under hardware-> connections-> interconnection fabric A fabric / B). (So the action Set FC Switching Mode of link, incidentally.) Also, when I click on this link, I get a warning saying local ' are you sure you want to set the mode of end-host FC? If you select Yes , the fabric of interconnection will restart and this application will disconnect'. Note the use of the singular here; the warning refers to an single fabric of interconnection, which is perfectly logical that the change was requested only on one two FIs.

The wording is misleading, because it is not in order with a completed receipt one.

That's why Kenny of the TAC wrote the answer above.

  • install vCSA single host and manage this host of "inside".

    Hello

This is probably a stupid question, but I have found no reference or information about it:

is it possible to install vCSA on a single host, which will be then handled by the same vCSA?

background: there is only a single physical server available.

are there disadvantages with such a configuration, and if there is, which could be problematic? same starting the server cannot, because it does not find the vCSA server to validate its license?

I know that an update manager will not be usable, as the upgrade of the host, all virtual machines must be turned off and the host is in maintenance mode. This isn't a problem, as a manual upgrade of a single server is really easy.

    Best regards

    Mayr Oskar

I agree with Gortee about the DVS, because that would be a factor limiting.  Since it is a single host it is useless to DVS anyway (unless you need the ability to scrutinize traffic in native mode).  I use the full vCenters blown on my main data centers, but I have a bunch runs exactly as you mentioned (about 60 sites with single host + VCSA + vStandard Switch).  No problems.  Good thing is that you can define the order of auto start since you do not HA.

  • All disks in a single host went from vSAN

    Hello

I recently had a power cut at home. My 3 node cluster came back OK, but I noticed that the vSAN was missing lots of storage.

After investigation, it seems that all the disks in a single host have been abandoned (all 4 were operating before the incident).

I tried to reboot the host, but this has not solved the problems I encounter.

My file server is unable to turn on because of that, I think it was resynchronize components during the power failure happened.

Because I have data on these discs (my file server), I hesitate to re - install ESXi on the host or do something with the disks

  • VMotion between 2 Hosts with different processors

    Hallo,

I have a server in my homelab I use for studies of VMsphere and I want to get a second machine to test advanced features such as HA, Vmotion etc.

My first server has a map of X9SCM-9 with processor Xeon E3-1230V2 (Ivy Bridge). I am currently running ESX 5.0 U2 on it.

I was counting on obtaining of material quality for the second host consumers because I don't want to spend a lot on it, so I thought that I need any CPU generation Ivy Bridge.

I tested today with a second machine with a Pentium G2020 Ivy Bridge, but when I try to Vmotion he says "the virtual machine requires physical features that are not available or disabled on the host... ».

So I figure there must be a difference in architecture regardless of the CPU beeing an Ivy Bridge CPU.

When I try to activate CVS it just me are going to the 'Nehalem' Version so my virtual machines running on host 1 would not be able to use all the features of the CPU since the Xeon.

So the question boils down to: what is the processor less which offer compatibility VCA L5?

Or is there something else to consider in VMotion between two hosts with different processors?

I got a shared storage, etc. of the same network configuration.

    Thank you

    Benjamin

    Hi Benjamin,

For compatibility VCA L5 want to look at one of the following models, Intel CPU:

    • Ivy Bridge: Series E3-1200-v2
    • HASWELL

I would recommend mental health that before rushing and a CPU purchase, check if a cheaper option would be, as Jon mentions in suppresss some fo the CPU compatibility checks so obviously, this is not desirable in a production environment, and must be applied in your study of VMware Lab to the home address.

    Hope this helps,

    Simon

  • Storage vmotion - 3.5 hosts and 4.1

Having 2 esx3.5 u3 (or whatever the last update was for 3.5) and 2 new esxi 4.1 (Yes, I know - but it is only temporary - will be promoted to the 5.1 this fall).

3.5 hosts to connect to the storage on the old NetApp using iSCSI. 4.1 guests have the new NetApp NFS data warehouses but also have access to iSCSI data stores.

So storage vmotion, 3.5 guests should be able to 'see' NFS data warehouses? Alternatively, can the fact that the destination can see both of them, enough?

Also - if I need to create data warehouses NFS on the 3.5 hosts - tips for me?

    ;-)

    wait - wait

I think it's become clear to me. Wow - so simple! As long as the new hosts can see old data warehouses (they do it), then we have vmotion of old hosts again and then storage vmotion of iscsi to the NFS and old guests don't need to 'see' the NFS at all.

    DUH!

LOL - Thanks for being a sounding box!

    Dv01 has

    Of startup vmfs 7200 RPM 160 G = dv01-BOOT

    VM02 has

    Of startup vmfs 7200 RPM 160 G = VM02-BOOT

    Vmfs 1 TB 7200 RPM = VM02-VMFS

    Vmfs 5900 RPM 2 TB = VM02-TV01

I have (3) facility profiles of storage using 'User-defined storage Capablity' as shown below:

    (160 @ 7200 RPM SATA) boot > Boot

    Fast (160 7200 RPM SATA and 1 TB @ 7200 RPM SATA) > fast

    Slow (2 TB @ 5900 RPM SATA) > slow

Then, I set up a storage Cluster with my local disks on dv01 (only to date)

LocalVM disc dv01-BOOT and dv01-VMFS disk of the 'cluster of storage.

I have a computer virtual called DC01 (HardDisk1) want to live on 'Boot' profile storage drive
His "Non-compliant" poster according to the storage profile, it should run on drive 'boot' on dv01

To get to this point, I put the StorageCluster in Mode of Maintenace 'DTS' and forced a sVmotion of all virtual machines off dv01-BOOT

No disks are IO or claim of space.

But once I take the 'DTS Maintenacne mode' STARTUP dv01 floppy is now get the DTS to return him to satisfy the storage profile (rule) I install... IE do the 'storage profile' VM complient (without doing a few externall API, the PS script or the 3rd party software calls)... ??

Seems weird it is (or may be) such disconnection of a memory of the profiles and the StorageClusters and the DTS?

    Thank you...

At this point, I think that storage DRS and storage profiles are two technologies to separate and work independently, but what you suggest is a great idea-

  • Can you have a cluster with a single host?

    Hello

I'll put up a new VMware infrastructure, which includes a cluster with 2 guests in a place and a single ESX host in a second location.  They will all be managed by server unique vSphere.

It is possible that the second site can earn an additional ESX host at some point in the future.  So, my question is if I have to create a cluster for the second site and have just the single host in it for now, so its ready if we add a second host?  Is it possible to have a cluster with a host, and what are the consequences of this?

    Thank you

    Joe

Technically, Yes, you can have a Cluster to a single node and if you plan to add another node in the cluster later it makes sense to set up the first node.

And, both from a technical point of view, but especially from a point of view BAU.  Mulitnode cluster promotion will be less intrusuve there is no additional software to add on the pre-existing main node, therefore you Board change will be less nervous about the piece of work, because it won't change the node pre - that does not exist.

From a personal point of view my current client runs a number of single-node clusters, in their environment.

  • Upgrade of a single host with Shared Storage

Getting ready to upgrade my ESX 3.5 hosts to vSphere.  I've already upgraded to vCenter.  I have two hosts managed by vSphere, and both hosts have a storage area of channel shared fiber that guests are on.  Each server can see all shared data stores.  I want to upgrade a single host first, then later upgrade the other host.  I've migrated the guests running to 2nd host whose I am not upgraded at the moment.

My question is can I upgrade the first host using Update Manager?  What happens to guests in data warehouses that run on 2nd hosts?  Will they be affected?

    > My question is can I upgrade the first host using Update Manager?

    Yes.

    > What will happen to customers in data stores that run on 2nd hosts? Will they be affected?

    They will not be affected.

  • Maintenance DTS mode impossible because "the VM is pinned to a host.

This must be a bug - anyone he met?

I have a storage cluster where I want to empty a LUN. When I choose 'Enter DTS maintenance mode', the wizard is flawed because "the VM is pinned to a host.".

    Hello world!

We have recovered from it, but had to manually!

One of our hosts running 4.1 became isolated, because vsphere always showed the host, but we could not even place the host mode now as most of the features are grayed out. Host showed as disconnected in vsphere. clicking on CONNECT has not set the it. Reboot the host, the host came back with an error «file missing startup...» ", and we had to use the REPAIR cd to get it restored.

My question is, why didn't all of vmotion of our VM for the other two hosts when this host became isolated?

    HA is enabled,

VMware HA is checked to activate the tracking host.

    Admission control is enabled

Admission control policy is set: chess host tolerates the value: 1

Virtual Machine options are: cluster parameters: vm restart priority: are AVERAGE and response of isolation the host is set to Power Off.

Monitoring of the VM is: VM monitoring only and the sensitivity is set to MEDIUM.

We use Vsphere Essentials Plus 4.1 on 3 HP DL 365 G5 hosts and an EMC Clariion SAN.

Your DNS server on the host that is down?  I had a simiar situation where both of my primary and secondary DNS servers have been on the host that is down.  vCenter eventially lost communication with guests because he could not resolve names.  Restart the host did not work because they were stopping the process of HA. vCenter could not restart on the other hosts because of the DNS problem.  I had to open a web console on the first host to start the DNS servers manually.

I now have a rule of DRS Setup so that my DNS servers cannot be on the same host.  I also put the names of all my hosts in the host file on my server vCenter.
