Manually organize files in folders.

Just upgraded to Windows 7. In my records, I want to be able to place the files in the order I want, I've done it before on XP using "Auto arrange" but I thought that this was deleted by Microsoft. I can't believe they could do something so stupid, there must be an option to organize. Can someone advise?

When someone is going to get is that the vast majority of computer users don't want all the unwanted complicated but a basic system to perform basic tasks.

Wait to see win 8.

Now I know how to organize folders and files by created date, simply click on the tab and Explorer sorts.

My question is how to organize files and folders together in date?

If I remember right under win95 or 98 of time things were fixed that... Anyone know how?

    Thank you!

Right click on a place empty and try the option "Group by", which groups them by date.  For example, all changed yesterday is in a group of "yesterday".

  • Organize files and folders

I am the only user and the owner of my computer.  Mr. Gates and Vista have decided how to organize my personal files and do me not have permission to move and organize as I wish - I get the message that I don't have permission to move videos from the folder my documents to the folder my videos.  I have not authorized to change the other settings on MY OWN computer, personal and private.  your FAQS don't answer this question.  I bought this computer with your HP operating system, yet your cat says that my product (within a year) does not qualify for support unless I want to enrich your coffers of $50.00 / hour - not even knowing if you can help - YOU ARE THIEVES - I HATE MICROSOFT MORE WITH EVERY 'IMPROVEMENT' YOU MAKE to YOUR OS.  I NO LONGER USE YOUR OTHER PRODUCTS AND WILL SWITCH TO LINUX INSTEAD OF GIVING YOU MORE MONEY TO WORSE ME WITH WINDOWS 7.
    Ware
BILL GATES, MICROSOFT, the DEVELOPERS of WINDOWS - it's poor customer service.  I use the free and shareware programs that are as good or better than yours and allow me to configure and control my own computer - www.openoffice.org is better than MS Office.  www.Mozilla.org for firefox is better and SAFER than internet explore.

GATES and MICROSOFT, you can be great now, but there is a growing reaction, and I hope to see you fall.  Your actions and your contempt for your customers and our desires will be your downfall.  the more you try and create a monopoly, competition more you are ending your rain.

It sounds like a problem with permissions for me - what you want is possible.

To view your permissions, right-click on the file/folder, click Properties, and check the Security tab.  Check the permissions you have by clicking on your user name (or group of users).  Here are the types of permissions, you may have: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-are-permissions.  You must be an administrator or owner to change the permissions (and sometimes, being an administrator or even an owner is not sufficient - there are ways to block access (even if a smart administrator knows these ways and can move them - but usually should not because they did not have access, usually for a very good reason).)  Here's how to change the permissions of folder under Vista: http://www.online-tech-tips.com/windows-vista/set-file-folder-permissions-vista/.

To resolve this problem with folders, appropriating the files or the drive (as an administrator) and give you all the rights.  Right-click on the folder/drive, click Properties, click the Security tab and click on advanced and then click the owner tab.  Click on edit, and then click the name of the person you want to give to the property (you may need to add if it is not there--or maybe yourself). If you want that it applies to subfolders and files in this folder/drive, then check the box to replace the owner of subcontainers and objects, and click OK.  Back and now there is a new owner for files and folders/player who can change the required permissions.  You can change now switched to read-only (even if the main folder indicates that they are always read-only - you can access yourself as the owner).  You can keep them in read-only to other users, customers and administrators even (although they can support themselves and access, if they wish, and it is really not that you can do to stop it except protect the file with a password by using a 3rd party product.)  Here is more information on the ownership of a file or a folder: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

P.S. Personally, I am very happy with Microsoft and almost all of their products and will probably continue to use them.  Perhaps it is because I have been largely trained in their use and have some difficulties, do what I want.

When I try to manually move a folder to be the first I can t whay

    Hello ivan099, welcome.

You can manually arrange the icons on the desktop, but all the other icons in the folders are self-organizing and cannot be changed by direct access. You can organize them into a multitude of different ways by right-clicking on an open space (in a file) sort by > more...

A problem has been discovered in Windows XP when users would arrange accidentally manually the folders and icons, and in turn, they paint eachother. For the sake of simplicity, and for performance reasons, this feature has been removed.

There are a number of programs 3rd - party which exist and which allow you to do this, however, they would of course not be supported by Microsoft.

I am looking for internet "File Manager", "Alternative shell" or something similar. You can find some support forums that are users who specialize in just the exact thing you're looking for.

    Hope this helps,

  • What is the best way to organize files and folders on my mac (current Yosemite)?

I'm bored of Windows Explorer, since I got my Mac, as the Finder does not quite do the job.  Applications or software out there who will help?

I think you go through a learning curve, Finder is much more powerful than WE have ever been. You can benefit by using https://www.apple.com/support/macbasics/ to learn how to OS X and if it is not useful to get a book on the Mac OS X version you use and use it as a reference guide until you feel comfortable using OS X.

As much a organize your stuff, specifically are what types of files & folders you referring? If you mean to say that your photos and then use the Photos app for this, if you want to say your music is what iTunes. If you want to tell your other files then Finder and how to organize the files and the use of items such as tags in the Finder. There is a LOT of information at your disposal, but you must write specific questions in the case that we do not know what you are trying to solve the problems.

  • organize files and folders in a single partition

I have three partition with the same content folder and file how to do in a single primary partition to organized and make more space

First of all, make sure that all partitions have the same content. If they differ, identify who is the partition that contains the system files and boot. Delete the other two. Resize the remaining partition to fill up the drive. Make sure that the partition is marked as active.

Restart the system. If it does not start, you will need to repair the boot loader. Use the installation on the Vista DVD if you have a vista DVD.

For these operations, it might be useful to have something like Acronis Disk Director to use (it is free) or GParted (it is).

  • Why the possibility to manually sort the files in folders has been deleted?

Why have removed the ability to manually sort the files and folders? Having the ability to rearrange the files and folders is common sense and the need in some of my work. This removed feature cost me an hour or two of extra work that week you can reorganize all links/shortcuts in any order they wish, but to actually move files and folders around is more can be made. I would never have bought Windows 7 if I knew took it this feature away from me.

    Hi bcwups

Whenever you ask the question 'why', the only possible answers you will get on a support forum are just speculation or conjecture.

The only people who can answer the question are people who take design decisions, and they don't usually respond to questions here.

If you wish to submit your comments and thoughts on the design of Windows 7, you can use the following online feedback form.

Windows 7 comments - talk us at Microsoft

There are places you can go to get some insights into the 'why' of individual decisions are made. Many Microsoft Windows developers have their own blogs where they publish articles that are sometimes very transparent and revealing. Here is a link to the parent for these items.

    Home - MSDN Articles

Another good resource is the blog that Windows developers used during the beta of Windows 7. If you look at the archived articles, (more than 60) they described the 'why' of a large number of features that have been changed/added/removed from Windows 7.

I'm very frustrated by the complete impossibility to organize files in Safari.

It would be nice if Apple has simply created bookmarks in Safari roughly the same work as folders in the Finder.  A simple feature, you would think but apparently a glaring omission by Apple.

    -No automatic alphabetical organization

-A folder will be inside another folder when you try manually and reposition the (correct) alphabetical location in the bookmark list any care you reposition between two existing records.

I used Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer and Safari in my experience is the worst of any attempt to organize bookmarks.   I am seriously considering to give up Safari, Chrome installation and transfer on all bookmarks from Safari to Chrome.
