Mapping of VMware Clusters

Is it possible to map volumes to more than one cluster without affecting possibly data? We currently have 5 volumes mapped to our 5 ESXi server cluster.  We add 2 hosts, so added another cluster for guests.  I was wondering if I could map these 5 volumes in two clusters, or do I need to create all new volumes to the new cluster?

Thanks for your help!

Hello, jyoung709.

So basically mapping a volume to 2 different groups, would be the same mapping for 2 guests not in a cluster. It would result in corruption. The beauty of clustering, is there a "moderator" (if you want) which manages during a read or write hit a drive. The hosts in the cluster are managed by software that allows them to 'take turns' so to speak, so it is not simultaneous writing. (This is a rough explanation, but is used to)

In your scenario, each cluster has no knowledge of the other and is not managed by the moderator said. If there is a "cluster management system" for clusters? ... course. but I have my doubts that it is there.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Server virtualization and coud computing are the driving forces behind the need to cover the area L2 network. It was TRILL comes into play.  You get horizontal mounted in a flat network, with several paths of transmission of L2 powered by TRILL.

    The question I have is just how far through the data center the field L2 really should extend? To say that this is a vmware environment. The latest version of vSphere allows up to 32 servers per cluster.   In addition, it is only within this 32-host cluster a vmotion or DRS or FT action can take place. Theoretically, you can configure the cluster vmware for the duration of the entire, end-to-end farm. But in reality, the vmware configuration clusters? I think the hosts in a cluster are largely set up in adjacent cabinets, not through the entire data center. So, do you REALLY need extend the field of L2 on the whole farm data center?

    RSEngineer wrote:

    When a cluster of 32 hosts is built, the servers are normally adjacent to each other and connected to the same switch infrastructure, correct? Imagine I have 50 racks of servers, a cluster is NOT normally the 1 and some rack in rack 10 servers... and other rack 48... fix?

    Depends on what you mean with grid 1, 10 and 48 - is it for servers show that these media are located physically outside or just that they are separate groups?

    In general, it will be good to have to cluster across multiple grids - from the point of view of VMware HA which is another 'cluster active the feature' in general, as well as the Drs HA will be able to restart virtual machines on other so physical host to one or more hosts dies.

    This also means that it might be wise to separate the members of the cluster of several grids / chassis blade or other who could do together. A view of high availability, it may be good to have a few physical hosts on the same grid (or others who might share common power or similar).

    Would this be something like this work?

    $cluster = get-Cluster-name mycluster

    $vmsInGroup = $cluster. ExtensionData.ConfigurationEx.Group | Where {$_-is [VMware.Vim.ClusterVmGroup]} | %{

    Notice-EEG-Id $_. VM | Select the name of ExpandProperty-

    The script first gets the names of all virtual machines that are used in any VM Group on the cluster.

    Then he gets all the virtual machines in the cluster and displays only the names of these virtual machines that are not in a VM group

  • Sharing LUNS between VMware Clusters

    We currently have a 3.5 divisΘe in farms host.

    Farms, they are further broken into clusters

    Y at - it problems with sharing LUNS between clusters in the same farm.

    I don't think that it is a good idea, but I can't seem to find any documentation indicating one or the other.

    Of course you must have shared LUNs within the cluster.  But it seems that you ask if you must share LUNS between clusters.  Yes at least one logical unit number.  This way if you need to move virtual machines between clusters, you can.  And of course you mentioned your lun model.

    You can always reinstall them all when you want it, the essential ESX host is to make sure that the copy of the virtual machine is stored safely on your SAN, NAS, or backup, which contains the information of data for each of the virtual machines. Once you have obtained a new configuration of ESX, you can always sign back the virtual machine to the host with less than 5 minutes work.

  • IPCOP on vmware

    Hi guys,.

    I try to install ipcop on my server using vmware.

    IPCop requires 2 separate network cards (modem/internet, red and green - network)

    On my server, I have 1 onboard network controller, and then I have a gigabit pci gard in.

    Now in the network connections, they are found and activated.

    The modem is connected to the on board and then network is connected to the PCI one.

    Now I want to know is how to make these two maps in vmware.

    I tried and fiddled arround abit, I can add to the network adapters, but it dose does not work (I believe vmware is just using the same card network and two virtual cards)

    Y at - he neither had to yield 0 to my edge network and 1 for my pci network controller?

    Thank you

    Try typing "netstat -?" in a cmd prompt.

    Have you tried https://127.0.0.1:8333 or the IP address of your other card NETWORK?

  • Best-practice for hardware virtualization?

    Hardware virtualization is disabled by default when I create new virtual machines in my VMware clusters. But what are the best practices for this what settings are recommended? Are there reasons NOT to activate the hardware virtualization?

    IMO there is no advantage in allowing virtualization of hardware if you have no need for the virtual machine (for example, a virtual host of the ESXi).

  • iSCSI and adapter NC550SFP

    Hi all

    I have adapters HP NC550SFP with ESXi 4.1 for an iscsi (10 G, control flow and frames configured) network.

    My configuration is up to now using the "iscsi software map" in vmware... because I see no support for adapter hardware iscsi for these cards. My questions are:

    1 the NC550SFP is supported by a hardware iscsi adapter?

    2 should I worry used with 10Gig iscsi software adapter?

    Thanks for your time... I'm a newbie to iscsi here... so I would like to do things properly before putting them on the prod!

    Glenn

    1 the NC550SFP is supported by a hardware iscsi adapter?
    2 should I worry used with 10Gig iscsi software adapter?

    1. I see iSCSI on the plug on HP, but no confirmation that it is a hardware iSCSI HBA.  It should be appear under storage adapters if she supports the iSCSI hardware.

    2. I don't think you should be concerned.  ISCSI HBA hardware will take off the part of the processing load and overhead of off the VMkernel (CPU and memory).  But you can see the small difference with the new processors and memory that we have in the servers today.

  • Adapter Intel dual AND installed - VM shows the Intel Pro/MT network adapter?

    Hi all

    I installed a dual adapter Intel AND in my host of ESXi v4.0.

    Loaded the driver through "vihostupdate out connection-bundle" > ok.

    INT-intel-lad-ddk-igb-1.3.19.12.1-offline_bundle-185976.zip

    The problem is that when I use this card in a VM it appears like an Intel pro/MT as a dual adapter Intel network card AND.

    In my view, this means that the NETWORK card will not work correctly.

    Advanced properties do not show the Intel network card options AND has.

    My question is:

    -How do I find and "bind" the good driver for this NETWORK adapter?

    Thank you Jaap

    PS

    I had set it up correctly on this system before.

    To test my installation doc, I started on.

    You will never see the physical NIC in the comments because he comes to virtualized hardware. Either you see map of VMware or em, regulated Intel E1000.

    When you see how an Intel adapter in the prompt the vNIC is defined on the type Intel E1000. You can also choose to use different "vmxnet» types

    However, the drivers, you need to come with VMWare tools, you must install in each guest. While the type of vNIC "e1000" can be used with the drivers shipped with the guest operating system, you need VMWare tools if you use type of vNIC «vmxnet»

  • Comments Windows XP keyboard freezes under heavy current hit on Ubuntu host

    Hello

    I am running a facility otherwise without problem with a host of Ubuntu 8.10 and a guest of Windows XP SP2 (VMware tools) in Workstation 6.5.1 build-126130 installed.

    The problem is this: occasionally (usually when I do a lot of typing) the guest OS stops accepting entries to the keyboard. As he does, he takes the last 20-30 keys (the buffer of some keyboard somewhere?) and repeat them several times, so I find myself with a few lines of what I just typed. After that, the customer will not accept any keyboard input, including the "send Ctrl-Alt-Del" command in the VM Worstation menu. Mouse input, however, is not affected by this (still works very well).

    The only way to get the comments to replay the keyboard is to restart the guest operating system (which fortunately can be made with the mouse). I tried to suspend/resume the guest and the opening/closing workstation - no effect. I also tried to vary the amount of RAM in the prompt to rule out a problem of low resources - no effect. This does not affect the keyboard in the home... everything is normal.

    Any ideas on where this problem is perhaps or anything else to try?

    P.S. I've specified manually the next keyboard map in ~/.vmware/config to move other keyboard problems:

    xkeymap.keycode.108 = 0 x 138 # Alt_R

    xkeymap.keycode.106 = 0 x 135 # KP_Divide

    xkeymap.keycode.104 = 0x11c # KP_Enter

    xkeymap.keycode.111 = 0 x 148 # Up

    xkeymap.keycode.116 = 0 x 150 # down

    xkeymap.keycode.113 = 0x14b # left

    xkeymap.keycode.114 = 0x14d # right

    xkeymap.keycode.105 = 0x11d # Control_R

    xkeymap.keycode.118 = 0 x 152 # Insert

    xkeymap.keycode.119 = 0 x 153 # Delete

    xkeymap.keycode.110 = 0 x 147 # home

    xkeymap.keycode.115 = 0x14f # end

    xkeymap.keycode.112 = 0 x 149 # before

    xkeymap.keycode.117 = 0 x 151 # next

    xkeymap.keycode.78 = 0 x 46 # Scroll_Lock

    xkeymap.keycode.127 = 0 x 100 # Pause

    xkeymap.keycode.133 = 0x15b # Meta_L

    xkeymap.keycode.134 = 0x15c # Meta_R

    xkeymap.keycode.135 = 0x15d # Menu

    See you soon

    In my case the problem was caused by multiple NICs on my development machine.
    ORA_DBMS_JDWP has been set at ip_address of wireless adapter which was on the other network segment as the oracle server.
    Rotation of the wifi adapter and then restart visual studio solved the problem.

    If you are using vmware workstation that ora_dbms_jdwp can also be assigned to the IP address of the virtual map of vmware.
