MD3200-R720-H810

We have a R720 with both a H710P internal and add in RAID H810 adapters.

We have a MD3200 with two controllers.

We run ESXi 5.5 on the R720; the sas - provider.vib has been charged.

Of course, we want to connect the H710P and the H810 to MD3200 to have redundant paths to the storage.

I have the H810 wired and configured; MD3200 disks appear in VMware as connected to the SAS controller not the H810.

When I switch cables to the H710P and reconfigure. MD3200 drives no longer appear. The MD3200 sees the host port interface is in place, so there is connectivity.

SO: is there something that I am missing to enable the HBA on the H710P ports? The BIOS settings? the SAS controller? a pilot of VMware?

The H810 will never able to connect to the MD3200. You will need to replace it with a second controller SAS6E. The H710 (if you use a converter/support to go from the internal ports to external ports), will be also able to connect to the MD3200.

  • MD3200 interruptions of supply current

    Hello

We had a few failures with MD3200 PSU (50 units), power supplies stop working while starting or if we get the power failure, the power supply can start working, after reviewing the questions, we discovered that when you disconnect the Raid Controller, wait a few minutes the beginning of power supply to work properly.

    my questions:

    1. This could be a bad communication between the raid controller and power supply/fan modules? update the firmware to the latest firmware may solve this problem. ?

    2. is there any procedure to circumvent the power of the controller and run the power without any control? and if it's dangerous?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Halim_younsi,

What is the current version of the firmware that you run on your MD3200? If you are running old firmware as 07.80.41.60 then I would upgrade the firmware to a new version because there are a few updates that was connected to the power.

As for your second question, I'm not aware anyway to bypass the controller the controller must control the fans to cool down the unit.  The system fans are part of power supply and if you go around then you might cause a thermal event or something else.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • Changing the RAID battery on the shelves of the disc MD3200

    Hello

I have 2 shelves, MD3200 of the disc. I've been advised by Dell that I need to change the RAID battery on both units.

I was wondering if someone has already done this, or are there instructions from Dell on how to on this subject.

Each drive tray has only a RAID card in each unit as it acts as one mirror of the other via the SAN software, but I am particularly concerned by knowing that the information contained in the cache has been written to the disks until the devices are turned off, while I change the battery.

Ideas or experiences that anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you Sam

New batteries so I plan a replacement, thank you very much for your answers.

  • Is it possible to Flash a BIOS SC8000 Compellent to make a Dell Poweredge R720 BIOS?

Is it possible to Flash a BIOS SC8000 Compellent to make a Dell Poweredge R720 BIOS?

Similar to the way you can Flash a BIOS NX3000 to make a R710.

I tried to Flash the BIOS in several different ways, including the BACK update and addition of /forcetype, /brandname and /forceit.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello, tjkc80.

So, the quick answer is no. You will not be able to do. In the case of NX, it is simply a R710 we have renamed, attached an MD for sold and additional storage in the form of an appliance. You are able to 'rebrand' that the return to a R710 because he was once a R710.

In the case of the SC8000, there has never been a powerful storage controller. It cannot be "flashed" on a server, because it has never been a server. It is built and designed as a storage controller.

  • R720 can I connect drive sas/sata hard without controller card?

I have a r720 without raid card.  When I plug a ssd or disc of 15 k / 10 k sas on the hotswap backplane, chassis recognizes the drive is connected (I get an orange light and lcd to alert that the disc is removed when I go out).  However, the bios and the operating system does not recognize any disks hotswap (they see only the optical drive connected to the ports on the motherboard sata.

Do I need a controller card to use drives connected on the backplane, or is it possible to use backplane without controller card?  I didn't need raid functionality.

    Thanks in advance.

    -shane

    Hello Shane

    ntshane
Do I need a controller card to use drives connected on the backplane, or is it possible to use backplane without controller card?  I didn't need raid functionality.

Yes, you must have a controller connected to the bottom of basket. If you have purchased the system without a RAID controller should have a SAS cable that goes from the backplane to the slot of controller S110 chipset on the system board.

You can use the S110 SATA controller on board for communication with backplane. Well, there are limits to the S110 controller, so may not suit your needs. You can probably buy LSI 9207 if you want readers to run in a non-RAID. The other options are a H710 PERC; which you can set the readers to the single drive RAID 0 s. In this State, they function as drives no RAID. You can also get a H310. The H310 supports the RAID mode, but we have added a few features to the H310 who do not find in previous versions of the card. In doing so, it reduced performance when operating in a mode non-RAID.

The reason why I say that you'll probably want another controller than the S110 is because you mentioned that you have SAS disks. The S110 is a single SATA controller. In addition, the S110 is supported up to 4 discs.

To access the BIOS RAID make sure the S110 is turned on in THE system BIOS. In the BIOS, go to SATA settings. In the menu choose the RAID mode. It will turn on the S110 controller. You can configure the drives in the BIOS S110 when booting with the CTL R. I do not know what operating system, you perform the installation, but the S110 is compatible with Windows.

    Thank you

  • Upgrades of the firmware and NVSRAM on two controllers MD3200

I have a double MD3200 controller (more an enslaved MD1200) which is currently running firmware v07.70.06.63 and NVSRAM vN26x0-770890-005 and I need to upgrade the firmware so the NVSRAM to take advantage of some new features.  I'm also about to implement the level of High Performance and another level of MD1220 storage.

Wondering if anyone has experience of firmware and/or NVSRAM upgrades on the controller device double MD3200?

Read the upgrade notes, it seems that it should be possible for me to update without having to close my VMs, however I think that is too optimistic.  So I intend to a failure of the systems, stop the virtual machines, and then upgrade and restart all virtual machines, once the firmware is updated and the storage Bay is visible from my ESXi hosts.

Any ideas or experiences that anyone can share?  e.g. I need to reboot physically (market power) storage arrays?  I was hoping to do most of the work of the House and I would like to avoid having to attend physically on the site, if I can.

I did it at home... (MD3000i)   Make sure that the machine you are remoting in with MDSM on it does not work out of storage.   I made this error only once.

I leave the ESX / ESXi hosts running but stop the virtual machine.   Controllers to recover, as basically powercycled by day, I can't believe that all VM would survive through that if left turned on.

  • R710/R720 - Dell customized Image of VMware ESXi 5.5 Update 2 - megaraid_sas version specific?

That I improve a R710 and two v5.5 (Dell image) to v5.5 U2 ESXi ESXi R720 using the image of Dell here:

    www.dell.com/.../DriversDetails

The documentation "Upgrade Guide to ESXi 5.5 using Dell customized Image" here:

    www.Dell.com/.../manuals

indicates that a specific version of the megaraid_sas driver must be installed.

Is the version megaraid_sas that installs with the image of Dell U2 v5.5 not the right version?

I just ran the upgrade on a R710 and it's the megaraid_sas version installed:

    ~ # vmkload_mod s megaraid_sas | grep Version
    Version: Version 06.803.73.00, build: 1331820, Interface: 9.2 inspired: August 22, 2014

    Thank you.

    Hello

It lists the R720 and R710 systems supported and both link to the same page, so the customized version is the same for both servers. Is the version listed in the reference guide for A02

    megaraid_sas - 06.803.73.00

    Page 5 ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_software/esuprt_virt_solutions/vmware-esxi-5_Reference%20Guide6_en-us.pdf

This is the same version that he shows for your installation on the R710 so that seems correct.

  • HP StorageWorks MSL2024 tape library integrate R720 Dell Poweredge

    Hello

I have a dell Poweredge r720. I want to integrate HP MSL 2024 so I need to install the LSI SAS9212-4i4e interface card.

Is this compatible with poweredge r720?

    Hello simpleguy3k,

This is a combo card because if you connect hard drives you can use it as a raid card, or if no drive is directly connected to the card then it can serve as a relay SAS card. Also, I checked the compatibility of the guide & it supports two different tape units. http://www.LSI.com/downloads/public/host%20Bus%20Adapters/host%20Bus%20Adapters%20Common%20Files/LSI_6Gb_SAS_SATA_HBA_Compatibility_List.PDF
