Migration of Essential Business Server 2008 Hyper-V to ESXi 5

Hello world

I would like to start by saying this would be my first time on these forums posting and get my feet wet with ESX, so please be gentle! After being loaded to a backup plan, I decided to give up the use of Hyper-V and use ESX. We currently have Essential Business Server (EBS) 2008 which consists essentially of 3 Server 2008 virtual computers running on top of Hyper-V. I tried to install from scratch on the ESX host without a bit of luck, the installation process is VERY specific and fails during the installation process. There was no clue as to how to fix it, I just got a dialog box saying just reformat and start over; He gave a second shot, but again fell flat on his face. And here, I discovered the VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client, seems to be the ideal solution, because we want a backup job! So far 2 servers have been migrated with 1 only being able to boot successfully to the operating system. The other is a domain controller, that I read can be very difficult to migrate and they are particularly sensitive to the hardware changes. Article I read seemed only to cover NT-2003 domain controllers not sure if I can go according to the Dec.

I'm curious to know if anyone has had some luck in the same case to EBS 2008. I found no guides on the EBS installation on an ESX host, and as much as I'd like to use something different, I'm stuck with it for now. Is there something I'm missing when migrating the DC? The only option I changed was to install VMware Tools after migration and add a NETWORK adapter as the default does not select a network adapter. I still have an Exchange Server, which also acts as a domain controller, to migrate, but I wonder if I'll run into the same problem. I really want to do this work and any suggestions would be helpful.

So, in summary: vm migrated from Hyper-V to the ESX host, using converter, DC won't boot to the operating system in normal or safe mode it just hangs.

If you have managed to come out with a hot clone of your ad and it looks fine, you can continue with this, however when you clone a DC a cold clone is always recommended / generally fewer problems because that AD is a sequence of the database which has no way to turn it off.  A cold clone allows you to boot into a linux boot CD environment to clone the box, which means that no service is running, which means you get all the data.

As far as your question DMZ will you have 2 options.

Option 1 (keep simple)

You can spend 1-2 psyhical NICs on the host ESX for a vSwitch DMZ, this may however considered a "waste of nics' However, it maintains the simpler and allows you to connect all the same way, as if it where psyhical.  For example:

vSwitch0

Service Console VMnic0

VM Network Vmnic1

vSwitch1

Network DMZ Vmnic2, Vmnic3

You would then just plug vmnic2 and vmnic3 on the host computer in your DMZ ports on your switch.  When you create your VM create you 1 virtual network adapter and bind it to the VM network and create a 2nd virtual nic to bind to the DMZ network.

Option 2

VIRTUAL LOCAL NETWORKS

A VLAN allows the traffic of tag so you can route different traffic at different locations.  It also allows you to separate the networks so they can't communicate AKA DMZ or test laboratory.

In VMware, you can tag VLAN on your groups of ports and then based on the balance sheet that you put on your switch ports switch will route traffice to the location.  For example, if you have your network DMZ with a VLAN 10 all traffice leaving this virtual switch when it hits your switch psyhical will have a tag VLAN 10.  So when your switch psyhical see this traffic (if it is configured correctly) he'll see oh this traffice to VLAN 10 I have this Router to port 2 on my firewall to your dmz ect.

I hope that this makes the sence or helped shed light on the subject.

Hello Ahmed - although this configuration "can work", Windows 2008 Small Business Server is not on the support list. This means that it has not been tested and it certifies to work with telepresence.

To my knowledge, he's not on the roadmap for the future support however, I search and repost as soon as I have an answer for you.

  • Virtual run Win Server 2008, Enterprise Edition on ESXI 4

    Hi all

I have MS Windows 2008 Enterprise Server that allows up to 4 Windows servers to run as VMs using the same VM license key. Can I run the server of Windows 4 VM on ESXi 4 platform using the same VM license key? I think that if MS allows the VM 4 of to run on their Hyper V Server 2008 then I am able to run the VM on ESXi 4, using the license key a VM.

    Thanks in advance.

    VinnyP

I think that it's evolving especially with Hyper-V now.  I think that there are some differences between people licenses but I'm the last Q / A on the virtual FAQ which is -

    Q. Windows Server 2008 virtualization licensing fees apply when used with non-Microsoft software virtualization technologies?

    A. Yes. Usage rights apply regardless of the virtualization product used. However, other than Microsoft software virtualization technologies are not supported by Microsoft. For more information about support policies, please see the following articles of the basis of knowledge Microsoft (KB):

I take that to mean licensing concepts apply whether you're running Hyper-V, ESX, Virtual PC or work/VM Workstation Server

Who knows with Microsoft, however, their reasoning is completely stupid and obviously tax based without thinking about anything through.

  • Server 2008 extremely slow on ESXi 4 (208167)

A few months ago I started having serious performance on our Terminal server VM server problems, and I have yet to track down the problem. I know that I inevitably left out some sort of vital information, please bare with me and slap my wrist when I forget.

    Our Vmware ESXi system:

    2 quad-core (8 logical cores) processors

    12 GB memory

RAID 1 Bay for discs of OS and RAID 5 for the data.

    VM on the system:

    Nuclei of SBS 2008 = 4, 9 GB RAM

    Server 2008 Standard (32-bit) = 4 cores, 2.5 GB of RAM

XP Pro = 1 core, 512 MB of RAM

This system used to work very well without any problems, but now it is sometimes unusable. The CPU spikes and takes forever, and it's not just with a single process either. It is used to serve a small site with a SQL database (used internally and not very intense) and Terminal Server services, both accounting can remote in and the use of Quickbooks.

I started, I was wondering if possibly, it started happening when I created the XP Pro VM and if he had to do with assigning a processor when technically all 8 have already been used. Which could cause problems? In addition, the RAM is only 2.5 (made at 3, up to what I gave to XP). I know it's low, even though 32-bit can go to 4, but if I look at the memory usage in the system, it is only at 60% or more. I will probably increase the RAM of anyway, but could not nail down the problem.

It could be something with general reserve and system? It seems it's only wrong with this machine a virtual that don't is not really implemented any differently from others. Most of the settings for the virtual machine are by default, other than the allocation of resources.

Even when something as simple as opening session, or open the reliability and Performance Monitor, watching the CPU in the vSphere client usage jump path to the top, but its use disk and memory remain relatively the same.

How can I find and check to solve this performance problem?

I found a few other Community assignments that go in-depth on the question of vCPU. Take a good look at both of the threads below. The general consensus is to not use multiple vCPUs unless required. Those positions explain why, and they do it well. I would say that your other admins coming in and changing things may affect the performance of your system. Can you take their rights to change things?

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 installs on ESXi 4

I have a setup of ESX4 full blown at the headquarters, but we have an ESXi 4 just put us in a remote desktop (thanks to win a bunch of servers because of virtualization in the first place).

This remote ESXi 4.0 server is for D.R. tests really, but I wanted to test the new DFS on Server 2008 R2 / branch Cache and all that jazz between the two sites.

The problem is that the Server 2008 R2 will not be installed.  The start screen shows

    File: \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe

    Status: 0xc000035a

Info: Attempt to load a 64-bit application, however this CPU is not compatible with the 64-bit mode.

Well, it's a processor 1.86 GHz Xeon 5120 and according to Intel, it IS 64-bit compatible:

    http://Ark.Intel.com/product.aspx?ID=27215 & Processor = 5120 & Spec-codes = SL9RY, SLABQ, SLAGD

Heck, the original server COMES with a license for Windows Server 2003 64-bit.

Is this a limitation with ESXi?  Should we go full blown ESX to run this?  The server is an HP ProLiant DL360 G5 server.

    Thank you!

I forgot to mention. Enabling hardware virtualization in the BIOS may require a power cycle not only reboot.

  • Windows Small Business Server 2008 starts after the full restoration of the PC

I need help URGENT here. My company has a HP Vantage 2 hard drives with Windows 2008 Server. C and D, both have important data on them. D drive has become corrupted over the last weekend, and as a result, the server was very slow and data on the d drive was inaccessible. Unfortunately, D drive was somehow part of the boot sequence, and when I took it out, the computer would not start at all.

Well made to purchase two new drives of 1 TB and replace the old records with them (we need the extra space anyway) and I did a complete system restore by booting from the windows installation CD and choose the external USB hard drive, we had that we were using for daily backups. Restore seemed to be going great, it took almost 3 hours and when he was done he had some problems.

1 when the external USB drive was plugged and the system tried to start, it would give an error message and would not continue even if the BIOS was said to NOT boot from the USB key.

    2. when the drive has been disconnected, windows seems to start normally, I would still get up to a point where I had a mouse cursor that I could move on a black screen, but then the computer would suddenly reboot! Like someone hitting the reset button. I can hear the drives stop when it happens. The same thing happens with no failure or last known good configuration mode.

It is a major problem because we do not have Internet or files. I wish there was a phone number that I can call for assistance. I would be happy to pay for it! even if it is a third party.

I saw that Microsoft had "pay per incident" support but it just says: it is $ 260, what for? An hour? A case? A month?

    Any help would be appreciated

  • How only migrate data between SQL Server 2008 Oracle 11?

According to our requirement, we only have to migrate data from a SQL Server database to an existence

    My SQL Server database name is SCDS41P2 and my Oracle database user name is CDS41P2;
When I used SQL Developer move offline data by the Migration Wizard, I found all the oracle user

    (2) I also tried to use the "copy to Oracle" to copy the data to SQL Server database tables

    Hello
After following with development the following should work too-

1 use the migration option to capture and convert the SQL * database server
    2. go in SQL * Developer and remove the converted model.
    3. click on the captured model and choose 'convert '.
    4. click Next and you should get a screen with 2 options - "Data Type Mapping" and "Object Naming.
    5. choose "Object Naming" and scroll down the list until you see the name of the user who will be transformed. For example, in my test, I got the names scott_test and dbo_test - where the owners are 'scott' and 'dba' and 'test' was the name of the database.
    6. change the name of oner_database to just owner - scott_test to scott
7 complete the conversion process and the owners must be created without the name of the database.
    8. you should now be able to generate the SQL * scripts of charger with only the name of the owner in the CTL files.

Please try this and let us know if it works for you.
