Windows Server 2008 R2 installs on ESXi 4

I have a setup of ESX4 full blown at the headquarters, but we have an ESXi 4 just put us in a remote desktop (thanks to win a bunch of servers because of virtualization in the first place).

This remote ESXi 4.0 server is for D.R. tests really, but I wanted to test the new DFS on Server 2008 R2 / branch Cache and all that jazz between the two sites.

The problem is that the Server 2008 R2 will not be installed.  The start screen shows

File: \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe

Status: 0xc000035a

Info: Attempt to load a 64-bit application, however this CPU is not compatible with the 64-bit mode.

Well, it's a processor 1.86 GHz Xeon 5120 and according to Intel, it IS 64-bit compatible:

http://Ark.Intel.com/product.aspx?ID=27215 & Processor = 5120 & Spec-codes = SL9RY, SLABQ, SLAGD

Heck, the original server COMES with a license for Windows Server 2003 64-bit.

Is this a limitation with ESXi?  Should we go full blown ESX to run this?  The server is an HP ProLiant DL360 G5 server.

Thank you!

I forgot to mention. Enabling hardware virtualization in the BIOS may require a power cycle not only reboot.

    Hello.

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2600 server. Here is the configuration:

    BIOS version: A14

    2 x Intel Xeon 2800 MHz 533 MHz, 512 k (SL6VN)

    4 x 1 GB of RAM

    2 x 146 GB (IBM-IC35L146UCDY10-0) in RAID1

    6 x 147 Gb (Fujitsu MAP3147NC) in a RAID5 configuration

Firmware for the PERC 4/Di 2.52D

It has worked well during the installation of Windows Server 2000. But now I need to install Windows Server 2008 R2.

Here's the problem: when I boot server to Windows Server 2008 R2 installation DVD, it starts to load the files and after a few minutes shows an error (I copy the exact error number) who said he's trying to run the 64-bit application, but unfortunately, this processor does not support 64-bit applications.

I was able to find a download for Windows 2008 x 64 on the page Support of Dell PowerEdge 2600. This means that you can install an operating system 64-bit on this PE 2600, is it not?

I know that Windows Server 2008 x 64 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are different operating systems, but 64-bit is always 64 - bit.

Also, I know that Intel Xeon 2800 MHz 533 MHz 512 kb (SL6VN) is a 32-bit processor, but if it was delivered with these processors, and there are downloads for 64-bit operating systems exist, it should be able to install these operating systems.

Please tell us how can I install Windows Server 2008 R2 on the PowerEdge 2600.

    Thanks in advance.

The list 2008 x 64 in the list of OS for the 2600 is clearly a typographical error / support/web content team:

You pay for 2008 x 86 as the latest OS on 2600... or get a newer server (starting with the 8th generation of servers as the PE 2800) to operate 2008R2.

"2008R2 is a 64-bit operating system that is not as forgiving as 2008 x 64 on the execution of threads of 16 bits."

16-bit applications are not supported in 64-bit operating systems:

    Hello

    I have a newly installed ESXi 4.1 - 260247 on a Fujitsu - Siemens GROUND RX300 S4 with 2 x Intel Xeon E5420 @ 2.5 GHz with 36 GB of RAM.

Storage controller is a LSI MegaRAID SAS 1078 6 x 750 GB SATA - drives configured with 3xRAID-1 logical drives. BIOS Version 4.06 Rev 1.04.2519

Now, I'm trying to install "Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit" in a virtual machine, but fail because the virtual hard disk cannot be found.

I tried with all Types of SCSI controller, but when running of the "Create Virtual Machine"-magician, he suggests 'LSI Logic SAS'. "." I tried 'LSI Logic parallel' and "VMware Paravirtual" but it did not work. However, I have not tried "Parallel BusLogic", since it clearly says no "recommended for this guest operating system".

I was unable to find documentation on how and where I can find the "LSI Logic SAS" - pilot to be able to continue the installation. The

Windows Server 2008 R2 installation is an ISO obtained directly from Microsoft eLicensing.

I also downloaded the drivers floppy 'pvscsi - Windows2008.flp' and 'vmscsi.flp' from the ESXi server, but the program finds no driver validates the installation of Windows on them.

I also extracted files "windows.iso' of the ESXi machine, but not drivers there as well.

So my question is, what model is the "LSI Logic SAS", I guess I can download these LSI directly, I need to know what model?

    Any help appreciated.

    Thank you!

    chrkad,

I think you have the same problem I had.   Trying to install 2008 R2 and asked for drivers?

The issue wound up being an ISO corrupt Ms.

Try to download the ISO using the java-based download manager.  This will tell you if your download is getting disturbed, as mine was.  It will also be the image once completed to ensure you've got the whole thing of checksum.  Just download via HTTP does not.

I found myself in download the image of the House and burn a DVD and realize that the back of the office,

  • Performance issues with Windows Server 2008 host

    Hi all

If I use a Windows Server 2008 host on my ESXi 4 installation.  I've recently upgraded to version 4 and had previously experienced similar problems and 3.5.  I also improved the hardware in the virtual computer to version 7 on all my guest OS.  The host in question is a file server.  Essentially what happens is sometimes that if a user opens a document (for most of the audio and/or video documents), the media file will take a minute or two to load then jump during playback.  If it's something like a file PDF/Word/Excel, the respective program crashes when the file loads or changes are saved, taking about a minute to respond to the user to enter again.  This problem is also very sparadic.  I even had this problem occurs when I'm the only user accessing the file server.  The specification of my VMware host is 3.2 GHz Xeon dual processor and 7 GB of RAM.  Two data warehouses are hosted on internal SATA hard drives.  ESXi is on the build 219382.  VMware tools is installed and update on all guest OS so far.  With regard to the use of the resources on the computer host, the memory usage with all my virtual machines running is almost always around 5.2 GB on the 7 available and the CPU usage is usually around 2 GHz.

Looking at the logs performance monitor, I noticed an increase in the use of the disc during the shutdowns.  Are there utilities built to test the internal hard drives to find errors?  If this isn't the case, anyone recommend a utility that I can use to do this?

    Other ideas are also welcome.

As mentioned disk SATA performance is less than ideal, or even acceptable by many people. The SATA drives in a configuration having non-RAID which makes it doubly Yes. If they were at least in a RAID 0, 0 + 1 or 5 configuration you would have best performance among readers (would be loath to 0 though, since there is no parity involved).

Using the means on board mode SATA drive controller (or not RAID) of the SATA it runs the performance as low as possible.

I wouldn't have even thought to have a server, or a system, used as a server that does not use RAID functions at least for redundancy. Couple that with discs that aren't going to cause bottlenecks as a standard too. Who used to refer to SCSI drives high speed, but also means using SAS drives these days (since they are replacing older parallel SCSI drives). The most difficult configurations for ESX, are performed on the server class hardware, which has access to a shared storage (which is high performance) on a fast network (Go to our days, or fiber) or a RAID array internally, which will not cause performance problems.

You can try setting the server configuration, you have now, but that will only take you so far. You will need to the major weak links in the system. A (a major) is the SATA storage as stand-alone drives. The other is a network of 100 MB, which isn't too bad, but is still a performance hit when you share all traffic with these two ports. Moving to a GB switch could help the part of the question, but you will still have to solve problems of disk performance. If there is a decent amount of shared storage attached network where you are, see if they can give you a reasonable amount for the servers you are running on the host computer. Of course, you'll want to also be on the fastest possible network/connection of this storage.

  • Installation of Windows Server 2008 from downloaded files

I have a new server ESXi of nu metal and you want to install Windows Server 2008 remotely.

I plan to download the Windows Server 2008 installer for the data store, but the user guide mentions the download an ISO file. I have the CD of Microsoft but not a single ISO.

So my question is, can I download the contents of the CD or should I create a bootable ISP to get this installation started?

MagicISO should be good do the job. You don't have to worry about doing whatever it is bootable. When you create an ISO image for a bootable CD/DVD already all these things start will appear in the image.

  • ESXi 3.5 and when trying to install windows server 2008

I installed ESXi 3.5 on my server and successfully created a first virtual computer on which I am trying to install Windows server 2008 standard. I use VMware Infrastructure Client 2.5 from a Vista machine to access my virtual machine console.

Installation of Windows server is an ISO file located in the root directory of the ESX Server data store. Everything went well with the installation until one last server restart showed a screen stating "the password must be changed before logging on the first time' by clicking on 'OK' present a login for 'Administrator' screen, asking me to enter a password for the 'new' and 'Confirm password '.

Any attempt to enter a new password results (up to 14 characters, mixture letter & number) in a message "unable to update the password, the value provided for the new password does not meet the requirements of length, complexity or the history of the area.

As far as I know, I'm not usig a specific domain, have never been able to access Windows server 2008 to create an admin account. I don't know how to solve this problem. I am new to VMWare and Windows server 2008.

Any suggestion to move forward and allow me to have access to the server via the console?

Thanks in advance for your help, Claude

This isn't really a problem with VMware, but more of a problem of Windows 2008 password complexity requirements.

The account that she is not asking that you must change the password is the local administrator account.

And you have tried in upper case, lower case, numbers and special characters?  Something like Win2008!@#$ maybe?

  • Create a Windows Server 2008 R2 DVD for Installation of the EFI

Is there an official method of production of compatible installation media EFI for Windows Server 2008 R2.
I created successfully using a rough method to recreate an iso using the original media and oscdimg.exe set out in a number of unoffical positions elsewhere.  However, I ran into another issue that fits the description that is described in the following article.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/975535

I expected that the fix provided in this article would have been incorporated in SP1 of Server 2008 R2 version, but has been unpleasantly surprised to find that there was still no support. I'm more than happy to include the fix in the media but it seems that the files are identical apart from the creation date.

I have completely updated the firmware of my server to set the server up to EFI Shell Version 2 which I hoped would solve some problems, but this did not help either.

It seems EFI will be the way forward because of size limits of hard drive on startup disks until when can we expect a real sollution?

If anyone has any experience with this issue so any help would be greatly appreciated.
