  Thank you for your response.  It was not a strategy of storage devices in my registry.  I tried to create it manually. I was able to get a folder, but the value is default.  Not believing that I could create the key correctly, that I resorted to restore my system before the first backup and I got access to the external drive at this time.  I will install a new backup and hope that I find not write-protected again.

  I use a unit of reconditiioned Dell 8300 with XP Professional system.  The unit was slow and gel a bit so, in one of the slow itls break cycles I insereted in the toolbar an old XP disc I had to front to see if that would help and after I closed the tray I noise loud crash and the tray came out showing broked pieces of the disc. I flipped the unit and hit the bottom and more pieces of the disc came out.  Now the set is not closed.  If I insert a workable disc and maintain status bar tap it will not do anything and a window tells me to insert a disc. Shou ld I try to disassemble the unti to see if there's still some piece or pieces preventing reset the tray?   I'm really sorry to laugh, but this is a funniest post I've ever seen. Apparently you've damaged the device rom (cd/dvd drive) replace it with a new one. They measure less $ $30 .00usd. Furthermore, placing the old drive in the drive xp will not improve the performance of the computer. Looks like you have some malware. • CFS3 hangs upwards and will not stop running.

  CFS3 worked fine with Vista, but began to hang. Upgraded to Win7 and it worked fine until I defragmented the drive and now it freezes and will not be cut.   • What is a printer wired or wireless?
  • What is the brand and model of the printer?

  Try the following and see if it helps.

  Method 1: Disable Antivirus

  If you have installed any third party such as antivirus or firewall security software, I would say you temporarily disable and check if it works.

  b. click Add a printer, and then select Add a local printer. Click on create a new port. The default value in the drop-down list is Local Port. Don't change that.
  c. click Next.
  A dialog box appears for you request that you enter a port name. Type the name of \\computer name\printer.
  d. type your user name and the name of the printer (name \\PC\printer)
  e. click ok and exit.
