modify the MBR

Hello

I just installed Win7 to dual boot with vista, the problem is that the MBR is not a boot vista option, even though I checked and the Vista partition is still there

any ideas how to change the MBR and add a line to be able to start new Vista

Thanks in advance

P.S. If you could tell me what lines to be added with default Win7 boot OS I would be greatfull

Hi DazzyB,

It is not the MEMBER you want to change, but you must change the Boot Configuration data (BCD) store.
There is a serval ways how you can add your windows vista partition.

Try EasyBCD, it is a free 3rd third-party tool that allows to you without knowledge specicial add & change some startup entries in the store.
http://NeoSmart.NET/DL.php?id=1

If do not want to install a 3rd third party tool, you can use msconfig (GUI) or bcdedit (command line). To set up the store.

This solve your problem?

Kind regards

As far as I know that something like this is not possible. Recovery media can be used to restore the BONES together. This is an image and there is not some kind of repair option as the CD-ROM of Microsoft full version installations.

  • GRUB loading before the MBR and causing issues

    Hello

I've erased the initial installation of Windows XP on my Thinkpad X60s and replaced it with Ubuntu just now.

To do this, I installed GRUB before installing Ubuntu Linux.

I must have screwed up of installation in the past, but ever since Ubuntu perfect.

However, now I want to return to my original installation of Windows XP from the ThinkVantage option.

But - when I try to do, GRUB appears before the MBR and generates an error and won't let me go further ahead. I tried to reinstall with an external CD, but this does not work as well.

Can someone help me with this problem? I need the MBR to appear before GRUB and continue my installation of XP.

I can't send the details of my menu.lst if that helps.

Also, on a different note, Lenovo will cover my warranty (3 years extended) if I have another OS installed?

    Thanks to all in advance.

    Hi MBS_PITT,

The print can be different depending on the print settings and the settings of the computer on the other computer. If you want the same settings, then you should change the settings accordingly before you take the print out.

  • Console of r. used to fix the MBR, now dirve says "New Volume"

OK, I'm having a big problem.

I'll start by saying that my computer a few days ago has only been running a configuration to multibooting with linux on a disk and Windows XP on another. Linux using Grub to boot. Now, I recently updated my BIOS and this had caused a problem with GRUB not start XP properly. I decided to remove the Linux disk, simply launch XP as my main drive and physically switch the two when I need to use one or the other.

Given that I was removing Linux, I had to fix the MBR for Windows would be to start properly. I read online that all I had to do was start using my XP installation disk in the recovery console and doing a FIXMBR and FIXBOOT. I did it, but something went wrong and he said that I had to do a CHKDSK first. So I made "CHKDSK/r" and let stand overnight (this disc is 1. 5 t so it took a while).  So the next day after work I went back to finish the FIXMBR and FIXBOOT. He gave me the same message. Now I know exactly what I did after that, if I tried other commands or what, but I finally decided to just hang up and see what was going on.

In Linux, I see that the name of volume for my XP disc went from "XP 1. 5 t"to"new Volume ". Not good. Now I see there are two files listed: RECYCLER and System Volume Information. I guess that the disk has been reformatted somehow? Now I'm at the point where I use my XP Backup to another drive of four months ago. I did some research on the recovery partition, file recovery, etc. I came across a program (trial version) that finds deleted files. I installed and run for a few minutes. OK, good news, is that I do not see some of my files and folders, so I guess that the disk was not completely formatted/overwritten.

I don't know how the player got there where she is now. Maybe I used a bad command or a switch?

So my question is where to go from here? Should I get a new drive and recover the files on the new disk? Can I restore files and recover the old partition?

I hope I didn't confuse you too much. I appreciate any help you can give.

    -Jimmy

    Hey Jimmy,

I personally never heard a user successfully remove the GRUB bootloader without a reinstall of Windows. You have no real solution is to reinstall Windows from the Windows partition is completely empty. I don't know any Linux file recovery tools, you may need to post in a Linux forum for Linux file recovery tools.

Sorry I don't have a better solution for you!
