Restoration of the MBR

I have an old aspire 3000 running Windows XP. In a moment of insanity, I loaded Linux as a dual boot with XP. Now I regret this movement and to restore the original MBR. Someone at - it advice on this operation?

I tried to do a full reload of the disc but the MBR is still in mode dual boot.

I have the system 3000/5000 CD & recovery 3 original CD provided by ACE.

TIA

Instructions are here to rewrite the MBR from the console command:

  • Impossible to restore the MBR using Bootrec.exe

I recently installed Ubuntu with Windows 8 so that I got dualboot. After a while, I decided Ubuntu wasn't my cup of tea, and I wanted to remove and restore the partition that it used for the Windows partition. I also wanted to restore the MBR. According to this guide , I have deleted the two volumes dedicated to Linux and extended Windows partition. When the computer reboots, I discovered that something had happened to the Grub - I guess I deleted something I shouldn't. It now shows the following during startup:

    GNU GRUB version 2.00 - 19ubuntu2.1

Minimal BASH like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible completions of device or file.

    grub >

Type the comand "output" translates a start meny quite similar to the old one (Grub):

I can boot Windows as normal by choosing option 3. The USB at the bottom is my recovery disk. Booting from it, I can enter the command prompt. I tried all the options of Bootrec.exe as described here:

However, it is always the GNU GRUB, which is displayed when you restart. I noticed that the /ScanOS and /RebuildBcd States that total identified Windows installations is 0.

I also tried to export and delete the BCD store and then rebuild using the following commands:

    • bcdedit/export C:\BCD_Backup
    • c:
    • Boot CD
    • BCD attrib s h - r
    • Ren c:\boot\bcd BCD.old
    • Bootrec /RebuildBcd

However, this is reflected by the following:

Someone has ideas how to restore my old MBR?

    Update:

After fully cleaning my drive, the Gnu Grub has disappeared. "Just remove my files" did not help.

  • Satellite M70: Is it possible to repair the MBR through recovery CD?

Hi, I do not know where should I post. I have Toshiba Satellite M70 and I want to ask if it is possible to repair the MBR through recovery CD) just as you can do with the XP CD.

    Thank you.

    Hello

As far as I know that something like this is not possible. Recovery media can be used to restore the BONES together. This is an image and there is not some kind of repair option as the CD-ROM of Microsoft full version installations.

  • Console of r. used to fix the MBR, now dirve says "New Volume"

OK, I'm having a big problem.

I'll start by saying that my computer a few days ago has only been running a configuration to multibooting with linux on a disk and Windows XP on another. Linux using Grub to boot. Now, I recently updated my BIOS and this had caused a problem with GRUB not start XP properly. I decided to remove the Linux disk, simply launch XP as my main drive and physically switch the two when I need to use one or the other.

Given that I was removing Linux, I had to fix the MBR for Windows would be to start properly. I read online that all I had to do was start using my XP installation disk in the recovery console and doing a FIXMBR and FIXBOOT. I did it, but something went wrong and he said that I had to do a CHKDSK first. So I made "CHKDSK/r" and let stand overnight (this disc is 1. 5 t so it took a while).  So the next day after work I went back to finish the FIXMBR and FIXBOOT. He gave me the same message. Now I know exactly what I did after that, if I tried other commands or what, but I finally decided to just hang up and see what was going on.

In Linux, I see that the name of volume for my XP disc went from "XP 1. 5 t"to"new Volume ". Not good. Now I see there are two files listed: RECYCLER and System Volume Information. I guess that the disk has been reformatted somehow? Now I'm at the point where I use my XP Backup to another drive of four months ago. I did some research on the recovery partition, file recovery, etc. I came across a program (trial version) that finds deleted files. I installed and run for a few minutes. OK, good news, is that I do not see some of my files and folders, so I guess that the disk was not completely formatted/overwritten.

I don't know how the player got there where she is now. Maybe I used a bad command or a switch?

So my question is where to go from here? Should I get a new drive and recover the files on the new disk? Can I restore files and recover the old partition?

I hope I didn't confuse you too much. I appreciate any help you can give.

    -Jimmy

    Hey Jimmy,

I personally never heard a user successfully remove the GRUB bootloader without a reinstall of Windows. You have no real solution is to reinstall Windows from the Windows partition is completely empty. I don't know any Linux file recovery tools, you may need to post in a Linux forum for Linux file recovery tools.

Sorry I don't have a better solution for you!

1st generation Apple TV is dead. Orange light but no screen and no resetting of distance. I tried direct connection to Mac and iTunes open and he's not here. Is it possible to restore to the factory without screen or remote workin

I guess you tried maintained low men together for about 6 seconds - silver 1 ATV that will restart to the diagnostic partition but who would rely on the hard disk is functional and if it was ok that wouldn't work with the logic board failure.

I guess you have not fed and attempted to restart.

In case your AppleTV think it is paired with another remote try Menu and left arrow for 6 seconds - the light now intervenes when you press the buttons on the remote?

Also, it could be in the video mode bad - try Menu and upward arrow together for 6 CES switch video modes, but implies that he actually started OK.

  • Default configuration of the Windows updates. Restoration of the changes. Do not turn off your computer

Hi, I just refreshed my laptop that I got a few drops FPS at random. Initially, it worked fine, but after a while before instaled Norton started to cause me problems. At this time I uninstalled it and when he asked me to computer restatr now, I did. Now I'm stuck with this message window loading. Restart the computer from time to time, but the message is always the same: failure of configuration of Windows updates. Restoration of the changes. Do not turn off your computer.
    Computer: hp pavilion n006sm
    Operating system: win 8 pre-installed
At the moment I'm stuck on this window for over an hour and nothing has changed

Seems that problem solved by itself. As I correctly uninstalled Norton, I just put my automatic updates and restarted my laptop again. He installed the updates with no problem and its working fine. Seems that Norton was really the problem, will keep you informed.

  • can I back up and restore on the same beta software

I want to restore my iphone 6 to solve some problem, but I'm on the iOS 9.3 public beta 4 and I don't know if I am able to back up and restore to the same beta version. My problem is not related to the beta software and I don't want to go down, I want to just restore without losing anything while remaining on the latest beta.

Make a backup, archive, and restore it as a new phone, no backup.

Restore will install iOS non-beta 9.2.1

Update via Wi - Fi to the latest beta (you may need to reinstall the beta profile first), then restore it from the archive save set

    Hi @mayurz91 ,

Thank you for visiting the Forums HP's Support and welcome. I looked in your question about your problems of HP Pavilion dv6-7040tx laptop and with updates.

Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant. Simply download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system.

If you run an antivirus protection, this could be a problem. Disable temporarily to perform the required updates.

Note Remove all USB devices. Disconnect all devices of non-essential, as these can cause some problems.

Plug the power supply directly to a wall outlet works. Do not connect it a power strip, surge arrester, or secondary power source as this could cause and issue.

    I hope this helps.

    Thank you.

  • Satellite L350D-213 - restoration of the factory without disks

    Hello

I came to this page because the Web, so many people say you don't need a disk and many others say that you do! {Massive headaches} CONFUSED!

After last week, ending up with the UKASH virus on my computer, a friend helped and explains to go into MSCONFIG in safe mode and disable all, then I could finally get into my normal settings and do a scan to wipe it. I ran ad-aware, but later removed that he had fallen behind EVERYTHING, including IE. Then, I saved all my stuff and deleted from my computer to make room. I then did some general research and followed the instructions. "speed up my performance" followed by a few scans/clean ups and Defrags.

I don't remember what I did to remove panic and difficulty Ukash and performance thereafter, except that I know that some applications do not work, because of a name of a file I know I deleted as 'my speed' and some I do not know why they do not work.

After spending TWO WEEKS on this issue, it is better, the UKASH went, my performance is faster BUT the strange problem of a file, and I'm done with him! I want to do a factory restore to put all rights that I can and have done wrong.

My question is; Can I do a record of WITHOUT restore factory, I don't remember if I've ever had a recovery disk, but if I did, I don't have any him more as they have become lost or misplaced.

    What are my options?

My biggest fear is I'm at half way through the restoration of the factory and it prompts for a disk and I don't have. I also drive HARD recovery on my laptop on drives C and D.

(System Restore does not work for me either, I have no restore points or can I create one, so another reason why I need to do a restore of the fctory)

    Kind regards.

In your situation you should not spend a lot of time speculating on what the people are saying. In the user s manuals document described clearly how it works with the recovery image installation, creating recovery image and what your options are.

In my opinion the best solution for virus affected system is new and clean install of the OS. It's certainly more radical solution but, I think of easier and faster way to have own OS again. The first step is the backup of the data, if possible and recovery image installation (factory settings).

Recovery image can be installed on two ways:
1 as described on http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm HARD drive recovery facility
2 with recovery disk created recovery image installation

I presume you didn't create this disk so that you can do now is to order on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

In any case, try it please with option 1 and send feedback.

    Hello

As far as I know your laptop supports a HARD drive recovery.

This means that you can restore your device without the Toshiba Recovery CD.

To start the system recovery, you must press the F8 key. Choose the repair of the system, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

Of course you can also create a clean restore CD using the pre-installed tool called Toshiba recovery Disc creator.

The link to this application should be placed on the desktop.

  • Pavilion dm4-3090se: how to use the SSD after restoration of the system of Windows backup disks?

    Hello

After a lot of work, I finally could restore my OS using Windows backup disks that I created a few years back. (The OS has been corrupted when the power has been accidentally deleted from the system and the battery was dead)

Restoring backup widows put everything on 444 GB C drive.  Nothing I put on the SSD drive d:-20 GB and there is nothing in the tools of HP E: drive - 4 GB

How can I make use of the SSD drive to help speed up the system?  I see the system starts and runs more slowly now.  I'm ready to blow the current operating system and re-run the Windows backup utility.  But I need to know how to use the SSD during the restoration.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you

    Bob

    Hey @llebrez,

Welcome to the Forums of HP Support! This is a great place to find solutions and help our community!

I understand that you have some information about using the SSD in your HP Pavilion dm4 Beats Edition Entertainment Notebook. I'd be happy to help you with that.

The SSD in your laptop is used for a technology called Intel Smart Response. Intel Smart Response uses the SSD as a type of Cache smart to help load the items faster. The reason why that is not used currently is because the restoration of the system is not designed to use the SSD for intelligent caching and is not able to establish that on its own.

If you want to configure Intelligent caching on your laptop, you can follow this guide provided by overclock.net: how: implement the Intel Smart Response Technology (SSD caching)

I hope this helps. If you have more questions that I'm able to answer for you, please do not hesitate to ask.

    Please hold me.

By pressing the Thumbs Up button below, you can always say thank you!

    See you soon.
