Move a virtual computer running vCenter

All,

I have Windows 2003 with vCenter Server and the license server running on a virtual machine on ESX 3.0.2.  I change my vmfs configurations to use extensions and move this virtual machine to a different vmfs partition I created.  How can I do this from vCenter is running on this virtual computer?  I just clone the virtual machine and then place the files on the new VMFS datastore and then turn off the initial tension on the new and delete the original?  Is there a better way to do it?  Thank you!

Another way that do is clone the VM on the other server.  Stop it and start using the other VM...

  • Cannot modify memory and CPU of the parameters on a virtual computer running - vSphere 4

    After a new installation of vSphere 4, I created several virtual machines and P2V had a couple as well.  DRS and HA was set up, and everything worked well.  If I understand correctly, I should be able to change the settings of RAM and the processor to a virtual computer running, but they are greyed out as with previous versions.  I can change them if the virtual machine is shut down.  No idea why this?

    Thank you!

    1 VM should be version 7 of material.

    2. you must set the "Allow memory hot add" powered off mode.

    Only after this, you can add memory to the virtual machine performance. Also, don't forget that Windows 2003 and 2008, Enterprise Edition and Datacenter Edition support this.

  • Remove a hard drive from a virtual computer running

    Hello everyone. Is there a way to remove a hard drive from a virtual computer running? Of course we can add a disk to a computer that is incredibly convenient, but there are times that we blow an as well. When clicked on the drive in the VI Client button is grayed out delete. I would have thought that other people would want to do that as well, but looking around the net and forums I find nothing!

    Its not feasible in 3.5 and below.

    Haven't tried yet in 4...

  • How would recreate the pagefile to a Windows 2008 virtual computer running on a host ESX 3i?

    As the subject says, I'm looking for a way to do this.  I inherited the environment of another group and it is very small, but it performs ESX 3i on the two hosts and Vcenter version 2.5 (Infrastructure) is a bit old.  5 of 6 VM are operational, however, the 6th when turned on will not get 40% full, but then it will fail to stating that is not a swap file.  Now, normally it is not a swap file, because they are created or deleted dynamically whenever a virtual computer is powered on one of the hosts.  It's quite strange.

    In the new versions / environments, there seem to be ways to recreate exchange capacity easily, but which doesn't seem to be the case here.  I don't think it's a process lock as the two hosts have restarted to clear HA agent / editions of the resource.  My guess is this has happened has been one of the hosts could not reproduce any more process for some reason any and when the VM problem has been powered down to try to erase some, the problem occurred.  Either that, or there are unreadable sectors in the data store, and perforated in this swap file black...

    I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to solve the problem.  Any input would be welcome.

    Thank you!

    All,

    Thanks for the suggestions, but I solved the problem.  What needed to be done was to remove the virtual machine of the inventory and then re-create it as a new virtual machine under the cluster of the same name, same settings and have it use its 2 existing virtual disks.  For some stupid reason, once this is done, he managed to turn on normally and now runs without problem.

    I'm not necessarily happy that this solution because it does not really help understand me what underlying the problem actually was, but I guess I can live with that.  The reason why I have not tried it earlier, is that I was afraid the vmdk would be replaced and I wanted to keep the existing information.  However, someone I work with was certain that they had done before, and that she maintained the pre-existing data, even in this older version, so I finally tried.

    in any case, thanks for the support, and if someone can glean some root causes of the problem based on the solution I have just given, that would be helpful.

    Curious to know how to upgrade hardware VM (from 4 to 7) of a computer virtual running vCenter 4 and the Update Manager.

  • Cannot move the virtual computer to a different location to store data/all

    Hello

    I'm physical conversion into virtual machine using the VM converter. When I try this it I get the message error "the file is too big" or something similar. I did some research and realize that my block on the data store size is not large enough. Fine. I know how to format the data store so that it uses a larger block size. However, I need to pass the current VM to another location. I downloaded some of the smallest virtual machine on a local computer, but for most virtual machine I want to plug a USB hard drive in the server VM to move large virtual machine. How can I do this? Is there another way I can move the virtual machine to another location without hassle? I thought to plug a USB hard drive on my local machine and upload it.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you.

    I also encountered this problem, and I solved a couple of different ways.

    1. If you have a UNIX server that is running NFS, you can configure a "dropbox" with 777 rights.  Then create a datastore NFS pointing to it, and then use the clone or clone for model option to copy in the NFS data store.

    2. use the product only settlement converter and convert them in one place.  Wipe the data store, reformat with the largest block size and then convert them back.

    Both works perfectly.

  • How to find out really currently used physical memory and swap space of hard disk to the virtual computer running?

    Suppose that I'm leaving WinXP hostOS a guestOS. Then a part of this guestOS remain in physical memory and another part is deployed on hard drive in the swap file resp swap partition.

    First question: the complete *.vmdk loaded into memory/swap space or only the part that is currently required?

    Perhaps only a *.vmdk 800 MB / 3GB is really responsible. But these 800 MB could be extended to 2 GB, because the content of these 800 MB is not compressed during load or guestOS drivers allocate additional memory.

    *. VMDK size seems so NO indicator for the actual amount of used memory / swap.

    How will I know how much physical (a) memory and (b) the hard disk swap space EXACTLY is currently occupied by a certain virtual machine running?

    The vmdk is not loaded into memory, because it is the drive of the virtual machine.

    *. VMDK size seems so NO indicator for the actual amount of used memory / swap.

    Yes, of course not. The memory used by the client is not related to the size of hard but the RAM assigned in the options of hardware reviews.

    How will I know how much physical (a) memory and (b) the hard disk swap space EXACTLY is currently occupied by a certain virtual machine running?

    Open the Task Manager and find a task vmware - vmx.exe or vmware-vmx - debug.exe.

    The swap file should be used if you have chosen to allow that VMware Workstation is authorized to Exchange. The file where swaps to door expansion .vmem Workstation. Search folder of comments.

  • Script to remove 30 days turned off of the guest virtual computer in vCenter automatically and the user on this subject by e-mail

    Hi all

    I'm looking for a script that can automatically remove power vm comments which have been stopped for more than 30 days off. Now I'm under this

    $IgnoredVMs = "windows7."

    $vms = get - VM | Name - descending sort

    foreach ($vm to $vms)

    {

    $DecommedVMs = ($vm |) Where {$_.} PowerState - eq "PoweredOff"} | Where {$_.} Name - notmatch $IgnoredVMs} | Select Name, LastPoweredOffDate). Sort - Object - property LastPoweredOffDate)

    }

    and then I run it manually

    Remove-vm $DecommedVMs - deletepermanently

    Things, it is that I have more than 1000 comments vm in my environment and we create & many virtual shutdown invited every day. And since we have a retention period of 30 days per vm we cannot remove them as soon as they stop. So I'm looking for a script that verifies any vm guest that is off for more than 30 days and remove them automatically automatically and e-mail user guest vm is eliminated.

    Thank you

  • Backing up a virtual computer running on vmWare player

    Hello

    In about a month, I run an IT project for a conference and to do this, I'll take with me my conference server, which is a virtual machine (Windows 2008 r2) usually run on an ESXi. To export it, I did a V2V and put it on a laptop. Everything works fine. However in removing my ESXi I lose the ability to snapshoting it. This virtual machine will be led by VM Player.

    In addition, to reduce the risk, I bought the same laptop in case of crash of the first. Now, I would like to find a way to snapshot or backup my VM without having to turn it off or to suspend what is impossible for me at the time of the Conference.

    Does anyone of you has an idea on how I could do this?

    Thanks for your help!

    Welcome to the community,

    even if a snapshot is NOT a backup, I suggest that you get a copy of VMware Workstation, allowing to create snapshots.

  • identification of the virtual computer running on local storage

    I am trying to identify virtual machines that are on local disks on specific esx hosts, but can't seem to find the right combination or references that map the.  I'm ready to use all means available to help identifiening, console, vcli linux commands etc.  Any help or pointers appriciated.

    Thank you

    Right now, I don't think there is a way to get the parameter of the BIOS with the SDK boot drive.  The other question is do you want the diskette or the OS Disk/Partition?  For the OS Partition/disk, you will need to query the GuestOS through VIX or any other interface and then that correlate with the SCSI Disk Device in your virtual inventory.

    If you just need the boot drive, you can make the assumption that it is SCSI 0:0.  It would change only by the intervention of the user manual via the BIOS of the virtual machine (F2 at startup).  This assumption is not guaranteed, but it is likely be accurate, most of the time.  I vaguely remember some talk around adding functionality to control the order of boot devices in BIOS of the virtual machine with automation.  If it is added, it would be possible to detect and change the order of boot through a script or a program.

    Something like the following would let you determine the location of the device node and vmdk file:

    use strict;
    use warnings;
    use VMware::VIRuntime;
    OPTS::parse();
    OPTS::Validate();
    Util::Connect();
    My $vm_views = Vim::find_entity_views (view_type-online 'VirtualMachine',
    Properties-online ['name', 'config.hardware.device']);
    my $vm foreach (@{$vm_views}) {}
    My $vmname = $vm-> name;
    My $vm_devices = $vm-> {'config.hardware.device'};
    my $vm_disk foreach (grep $_-> isa ('VirtualDisk'), @{$vm_devices}) {}
    My $controller_key = eval {$vm_disk-> controllerKey};
    My $unit_number = eval {$vm_disk-> unitNumber};
    My $controller_bus_number = get_controller_bus_number (controller_key => $controller_key,)
    vm_devices-online $vm_devices);
    My $vm_disk_file_name = eval {$vm_disk-> support-> fileName};
    My $vm_disk_label = eval {$vm_disk->-> label deviceInfo};
    My $vm_device_node = sprintf ("SCSI (" %s: %s %s) ", $controller_bus_number,)")
    ($unit_number, $vm_disk_label);
    printf ("%s: %s, %s\n", $vmname, $vm_device_node, $vm_disk_file_name);
    }
    }
    void get_controller_bus_number {}
    my (% args) = @_;
    My $controller_key = delete ($args {controller_key});
    My $vm_devices = delete ($args {vm_devices});
    my @controllers = grep $_-> key eq $controller_key, @{$vm_devices};
    # Must be only a controller since it is a key value in the VI SDK
    My $bus_number = eval {$controllers [0]-> busNumber};
    Return $bus_number;
    }

    Test: SCSI (0:0) hard drive 1, Test/Test.vmdk [datastore1]

    Test: SCSI (1:0) hard drive 2, Test/Test_1.vmdk [datastore1]

    In my output test, I would like to make the assumption that 1 the hard drive is the boot disk based on the SCSI Bus and the logical units (0:0).  If you correlate this back at the sight of the GuestOS of disks, it would be the same values of Bus SCSI and logical unit.

    You will notice that this basically recreates the same string that you would see in "Change settings" on a virtual machine by looking at its labels to disk through the user interface of vCenter.

  • vCenter Server 4 - install the Hyper-V virtual computer

    Hello

    We have a system of blade with VMware, but we have another Hyper-v Server. I intend to install for server vCenter blade VMware (3 x ESXi) on the Hyper-V virtual machine. So it will be another material of ESXi servers but still the virtual machine.

    Think you, it s reasonable method or nonsense?

    Thanks for the response (s), HM

    Yuck.  Sounds messy and much more complex that it should be.

    How about this.  Only have a system independent as esxi, but living installed on it outside your vsphere cluster.  Run a VM on it; the virtual machine running VCenter.  This virtual machine would ideally live on your network SAN's own logic unit number.  This way you get the benefit of it being virtualized, but also the advantage of it live inside your vsphere cluster.  It's like I do, and I think it offers really the combination of security and portability.
