I suggest try different hardware to transfer photos in Lightroom to see if the problem is the card reader or cable USB or USB port, or hard drive. If you have access to another computer, I would transfer the file to the other computer to see if it has the same problems in Lightroom on the other computer.

  Hi leftysrevenge!

  I can certainly understand not wanting the Finder of an external drive window to keep opening to a folder that has been used months ago because I wouldn't mine to display that way either.  No worries, there are a few steps here to get the default view has changed on this issue.  Follow these steps here and he should be able to be changed for this external drive:

  Open the Finder, click Display > Display Options > a window will appear to select your display preferences, make your selection here > and if possible use the button "Use as default" to maintain this point of view.

  The "Use as Defaults" button may be grey, if the format of the external drive is not OS X Extended.

  I copied all my files on the 1 TB drive for the new 1.5 TB drive (outside the LR) and everything is in the same folder hierchy.

  I can load LR to search the M drive now instead of the H drive for the same files? I have not yet tried, but it seems that I could disconnect H and open LR. When asked where the files are, I have to click on the new drive of M?

  You got right. You choose the top most folder that contains images. Interesting to note how long it might take to re - follow that a lot!
