move virtual machine data store

Installation program:

VCenter 4.1

ESXi 4.1

How can I move a VM between groups with non-shared data warehouses managed by vcenter even. I can turn off the virtual machine, but storage vmotion will not work as long as data warehouses are not shared between clusters.

Thank you

voltage of a virtual computer is not storage vMotion.  If you can take the dowtime, the easisest way.  When the host is turned off, select migrate, you can then ' change time host and the data store.

  • Best method to move virtual machines Linux of VC 2.5/ESX 3.5 to 4.0/ESX4 vCentre

    Guys,

I have to move a number of them. The two groups are there. If it is not a question about the upgrade of the VC/ESX. I want to use the simplest method possible to move these VMs and here's my plan:

1 copy the whole directory of VM from the data store on VC 2.5 to the data store on vCentre 4.

    2. Add the virtual machine to inventory in vCentre 4.

    3. upgrade VMware tools

    4. switch to hardware version 7.

And that's all. Please let me know if this plan is feasible, or more importantly, no holes in the plan.

    Thank you

    Hello

    You have a few options:

    1. you can bring up the old data store for ESX 4.x and save the VM on vCenter 4.0.

    2. you can add that the host ESX to vCenter 4.0 3.5 move virtual machines in ESX 4.0 cluster.  You can use vMotion and Storage vMotion, according to your needs.

    3. you can use the stand-alone converter to make a hot cloning of Linux virtual machines in ESX 4.0.

    Best wishes / Saludos

  • Put a host in maintenance - it will automatically move virtual machines?

    Dear all,

We have a cluster with 4 guests and we would now like to upgrade each 5.50 to 6.0 ESXi ESXi host. I understand that we need to put the host in maintenance mode. He will automatically move virtual machines to other hosts? I read DRS is necessary. I see that our guests are permitted for Vmotion and HA. We have standard Vsphere license.

This means in our case, I would need to move manually first of all VMs before the host can go into maintenance mode? In the case where the Vsphere will make work, the virtual machines automatically distributing to 3 other hosts according to the resources available?

    Thank you

    Edy

This means in our case, I would need to move manually first of all VMs before the host can go into maintenance mode?

Yes, since the Standard edition doesn't include DRS, you must manually move virtual machines to other hosts.

In the case where the Vsphere will make work, the virtual machines automatically distributing to 3 other hosts according to the resources available?

Yes, this would be the case with the DRS in place.

  • Move virtual machines to the directories.

    Hello

    I've recently updated to vc4

    Thanks in advance

    Hello

"Move the virtual machine files" option has been renamed to "Move VMs to the directories" in VC 4.0.

  • Move virtual machines from a to another data store

Is there a recommended (or integrated) way to move propelled out of virtual machines from a data store? Or is it a cut simple and working of dough which can be done from any client PC connected to the underlying storage providers?

If both, store data Source and Destination are connected to the same server vCenter, do Storage vMotion. Make a right-click VM--> migrate--> change of data store and select the Destination data store.

  • How can I move virtual machines from a local data store for a new iSCSI SAN?

    Hello guys,.

Now that we have a new iSCSI SAN market how can I tranfer all the virtual machine to a local data store for a new SAN? Can I stop the VM in the host, and then copy the DataStore files with all the info on the new volume?

    Thank you

    Pesinet

Alternatively, you can use VMware converter or cold Migration / Storage VMotion if you have the appropriate licenses.

  • How to move virtual machines from one host to another without full VI and vMotion?

    Hello

could you help me with a question?

I have two installed hosts with ESXi 3.5 U5, which are connected to the shared iSCSI (Openfiler) - VMs storage are installed on the storage disk. My requirement is to have a cheap solution of DR - in case of failure of a host, I need to move and start VM on the host of work. How to achieve without going through VMware Infrastructure 3.5 and vMotion?

    I found this article:

    http://www.virtualizetips.com/2010/04/how-to-move-a-VM-without-vCenter-or-storage-VMotion/

but RCLI needs Infrastructure of VMware ESXi does not have default CLI So, how to move VMs between hosts (of course I mean "cold" move) without byuing any additonal VMware SW? It is generally possible in my situation?

    Thank you.

If the virtual machines are running in shared storage (two guests see the same storage iSCSI or NFS) then it's simple. If a host goes down, then look for the data store on the ESXi host work. Navigate through folders for each virtual machine, right-click on the VMX file and add to the inventory. You will then be able to turn on the virtual machine.

To move a virtual machine from one host to another, as long as both hosts had the same processors, you can pause the VM on the single host, browse and add the virtual machine to the inventory on the second break host and the United Nations.

If the virtual machines are on local storage, but the two hosts are connected to the same shared storage, clone virtual machines on a daily basis from local storage to shared storage. Use something like ghettoVCB http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760 make the clone. In the case of a server failure, you will be able to browse the data store, add to the inventory on the shared storage and switch the cloned machine.

  • Storage VMotion of Desktop pool (or move to another data store)

I just wanted to check something...

Maybe I need a pool of offices of a data store to the other. I was at SVMotion, but according to http://communities.vmware.com/message/1160464 it will not work. It looks like to make use of type svmotion, I should rebalance the pool by selecting the new data store that I want, unchecking the old data store, and then by running the rebalancing, which moves all of the old data store to the new. Is this correct? I just want to check this with someone who had it before I give it a try.

I can confirm that if you clear your current datastore, select the new data store and re balance that the virtual machine will be moved to the new data store.   I actually did this earlier today with a pool of persistent linked clone.

  • Move VM - change data store

    Hello

It is a matter of mutliplart, but I hope that simple to follow. I need to move my VM's to another store of data from my ESXi host / node, so I can upgrade the host harware. Quick background; We have a Dell T605 ESXi server with 1 RAID 5 array. We're going to upgrade the current RAID and add another RAID 1, using RAID 1 for the console and RAID 5 for our database. We now have another ESXi host online, and the main quaestion is what is the best way to move the virtual machine to the host 'temporary', while we improve the primary host. The virtual machine need not run, what is the best way to copy them from one host to another? Once copied to the host 'main', how ca we add these VM in our inventory? We have researchd, moving the virtual machine using SCP fast and tested, works well, but we can't understand how to add to our inventory VM in the VI Client cousole. Currtenlty we test using Vcenter converter. Not sure that the best and fastest is to make our copy of data / backup.

Thanks for your help and your thoughts...

There are many options availible to do what you want. You can:

    (1) CPC (as you already have)

    (2) to clone the VMDK (vmkfstools - i, in your case, you will need to use rcli)

    (3) storage Vmotion

Once you get it on the new data store, (if you are on the same HOST) you want to remove the virtual machine (you moved) inventory, and then access the *.vmx on the new data store and (right click) add to the inventory.

  • move virtual machines to esxi4 og esxi5.5

    Hello

We have a customer who has today esxi4 and vcenter 4.

They set up a new system of vmware next to it, with esxi5.5 and vcenter 5.5

They make the old SAN (FC) available in the new vcenter. But how do we migrate the virtual machines.

Could we just add one of the old esxi4 to the new vcenter 5.5 without interruption all vms and migrate them to 5.5?

Or should clone us virtual machines? (some are domain controllers)

Feel free to come with suggestions

Use of option 1) VMware vCenter Converter: VM P2V Converter | United States

Option 2) if both guests can see the SAN, just closed the VM down, remove the inventory on the old host, click the find an ESXi host 5.5 to the data store where this vm, and add it to the inventory.  Then you can power it on a d tools on this upgrade.

  • The list of virtual machines, data warehouses and the folder name by cluster

Hello!!  I hope someone can help me with a PowerCLI script that can pull the info from the object into a file, txt or csv.  In order to get our environment cleaned before our next year Dr. with MRS, I want a list showing each VM and the data store (s) in that it is the name of the folder in the virtual computers view and models.  We keep our VMs organized by creating folder names that correspond to the application running on the virtual machine.  I mention a SRM than last year because our protected groups matched groups of our table of 3PAR Rcopy.  However, we have added over 200 new virtual machines from this era and the members of my team essentially placed these new virtual machines on the first available data store that had enough free space.  Unfortunately, we are not using storage profiles... it's scheduled for next year.

Information extracted would look like the following:

    ServerName Datastore folder name

    Server1 LUN0 ActiveDirectory

    Server2 LUN0 ActiveDirectory

    Serveur3 LUN1 ActiveDirectory

    Server4 LUN3 Argo

    Server5 LUN7 Argo

    LUN6 Lockbox Server6

    LUN5 Lockbox Server7

    Serveur8 LUN9 Citrix

    etc...

Any help with the extraction of this info from vCenter would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Charles

You can redirect the results to a CSV file, for example

    Get-VM |Select Name,@{N="Datastore";E={[string]::Join(',',(Get-Datastore -Id $_.DatastoreIdList | Select -ExpandProperty Name))}},@{N="Folder";E={$_.Folder.Name}} |Export-Csv C:\report.csv -NoTypeInformation -UseCulture

  • Move virtual machines on VMFS3 to VMFS5

    Hello

Our old ESX4 host are running VMFSv3. We have recently installed ESXi 5 on our new guests and move the virtual machines running on the old hosts to the news. They will just go straight, or is there a process of conversion during the move? If so, could someone please point me in the right direction?

Note: We are not looking to upgrade the old warehouses of VMFS data, we simply want to move existing virtual machines (on data warehouses VMFSv3) again hostsrunning VMFSv5.

    Thank you very much

  • Attach an iSCSI lun to 5.1 and 5.5 to move virtual machines

I have 1 Server esxi 5.1 I've built a bunch of VM now connected to a 4 TB iSCSI LUN.

    I gave recently 2 new 5.5 servers.

Ideally, I would like to connect these 2 servers to the same lun iSCSI is used by the Server 5.1. Then, stop/forget each VM on 5.1, browse the data store on 5.5, add to the inventory and it start up. After all the machines are moved, I can do some changes on the material on the Server 5.1, it blow and install 5.5.

I plead for the trouble, or is a reasonable way to do?
