• Using a single iTunes library on two computers

  I have a Macbook running El Capitan and the latest version of iTunes. I have an iMac running Yosemite and the latest version of iTunes.

  I currently save the laptop on the desk. I would like to be able to open the iTunes library for my laptop on my desktop, but when I try to do this iTunes tells me it cannot locate the files.

  I've tried a few things.

  iTunes organizes my media folder but doesn't not automatically copy it on it.

  I moved all my music files, so that they were in a folder in the iTunes .itl file, but the hierarchy above is different for both laptop and desktop.

  I read everywhere and discussions seem to suggest its possible, but no one has described the problem I have.

  With the help of pictures, I was able to do what I want with iTunes either open the backup of the laptop on my desk (although I can't tried editing photos so I just looked at the pictures)

  So I'm a little stuck and would be grateful if anyone can help us with that.

  You may not use the same library iTunes, two Mac.  If the two Mac tried to access and update the library even at the same time, it will probably cause data corruption.  But the library file (which is a database) is not identical to the location where your iTunes Media files are stored (which is what occupies more space).  By default, the iTunes Media folder is in the folder that the file to iTunes library.  But you can use iTunes preferences Advanced tab to change the location of the iTunes Media to an iTunes library folder.  However, two Mac share the same iTunes Media folder is also not ideal, because if you make a change (for example, the addition of a new song) to a Mac, the other Mac iTunes library will not know this change.

  The best solution, I think, is to use the share at home with two Macs.  If the iMac has 'primary' iTunes library, set to share its library on your home network.  This is done in the tab of sharing a iTunes preferences.  You can access iTunes library to the iMac for iTunes running on the MacBook.  All media files are stored on the iMac and the MacBook has access to the same files.  You can set the iMac iTunes library to download automatically the iTunes Store purchases on other devices (which use the same Apple ID), including the MacBook (on the Bank of iTunes preferences tab).  Keep the library iTune to the iMac as the master repository with "everything." the MacBook can have its own separate iTunes content (for when it is outside the iMac), but when he is on the same network, iTunes of the MacBook can directly access the iMac iTunes library (provided that the iMac is not turned off or sleep).

  Congratulations on your new iMac! I understand from your message that you want to create a backfile to your iPhone 5 c, but are afraid of losing the data on it. I know how it is important for you to keep your data on your iPhone 5 c and to create a backup file for it.

  When you plug your iPhone 5 c in your new iMac, iTunes should open. Your iPhone 5 c should also receive a message asking if you trust the computer. Go ahead and trust of the computer.

  iTunes should display a page that says: Welcome to iTunes and you give 2 options. You want to choose the option to play up like new. Don't worry, it will not erase anything from your iPhone. The next page, you should see if the page summary of the iPhone. You should see a picture of an iPhone and a description.

• Windows Vista (damaged) iTunes library

  I have a PC with Windows Vista. My iTunes has about 8000 songs in my library. Most have been burned CDs, mp3 Youtube and a few itunes purchases.

  About 3500 are grouped into playlists. Only my playlists are synced to an iPod classic.

  The song files are probably still stored on your computer.  The "damage" was to your file to iTunes (the one marked as "damaged") library database.  The iTunes Library.itl file is what keeps track of songs (and other media) in your iTunes library and where their media files are stored.  If it is damaged, iTunes creates a new (empty) iTunes library database file.  Real media files are not in the iTunes library file, they are stored elsewhere.

  NOTE: If there are general data corruption, it may have also affected some of your media files (not only your iTunes library database file).

  The default location (for your iTunes media files) is account user music (or music), and then in the iTunes folder in your folder.  Using Windows Explorer, to see if you have a folder called iTunes Media to this place (it can be called iTunes Music).  If you do, look inside to find your song files, organized by media type, then artist name and album name.  If you use default iTunes, songs that you imported to CD via iTunes should be there.  Songs purchased from iTunes Store should be at this place.  The song files added from an external source (not directly imported from CD or iTunes Store) may or may not be stored at this location.

  When you find your music files, copy them to a disk of a certain type.  On the new computer, run iTunes.  Go to the Advanced iTunes preferences pane.  There is a setting here to copy files to the iTunes folder when adding to Library Media.  I think that the option is not checked by default for Windows, but you should check in your case.  The other setting to keep iTunes Media folder organized must also be checked, if it isn't already.

  Show your music library in the iTunes window.  In the external drive with your song files, drag the song files or folders containing music files to the iTunes window and the drop.  iTunes adds all the compatible media files it finds in your new iTunes library.  Alternatively, instead of drag and drop, you can use the Add to library iTunes command in menu bar, under file.

  NOTE: This adds only your old media files to a new iTunes library.  Data such as playlists, ratings, number of coin, date added, etc are not transferred.  If you want to retrieve these data support, you can get it back on the old PC.  Please report if you want to try to do, instead of just transfer your media files to the new PC.

  I have my iTunes Library (iTunes Media folder) on a data reader and now I reinstalled iTunes and I want to keep the old library, so in the preferences, I put my iTunes library to the path leading to my old iTunes library, but the music still does not appear in iTunes. The only music that shows it's the music purchased from the iTunes store, but no CD-imports are shown.

  If you have the iTunes database files, launch iTunes with the SHIFT key pressed and select the library that contain. If you can't seem to them, made the iTunes Media folder inside the application window open iTunes or automatically add to iTunes folder; all the old library metadata that are lost.

• ITunes problem previous library playing on the new iMac 4K

  I just bought an iMac nine 4K El Capitan 10.11.1 running with iTunes 12.3.2.35. I also bought an iPad opportunity Air 2 out of glideslope. IPad is strictly for the use of music that I am a musician. Since I am unable to "migrate", I copied my old iTunes library on a hard drive, external, built of new playlists on the new iMac and then downloaded on the new iPad. (The HD was only a way to transfer the music.)

  It's just a few of the songs on the iPad part - but they all play in iTunes on the iMac. As you can imagine it's very frustrating because I spent two great to finally have a platform of music to date.

  Does anyone out there have a solution to this problem. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Especially of Kenichi Watanabe, who has been most helpful.

I have unfortunately seem to have lost all that concerns my old library with the exception of the foregoing. I have been using an external hard drive to make this attempt. When iTunes opens it is empty, and when you try to import the .xml I only get playlists, although there is nothing inside of them. It would not be the end of the world for me to start all over again, I've not lost music files, but loading in my all of my old info is much, much, much more desirable. Thank you!

  Copy the contents of your old folder in the itunes directory and start itunes--> it will do the rest.

  I'm doing something that should be extremely simple, and Apple has found a way to make it incredibly difficult. I'm moving my media to a new computer. On my old computer, all the media has been on the J: drive. On my new computer, it's all about the D: drive. Other than that, the folder structure is exactly the same. Apple says that in documentation for migrating to a new computer, activate the option "Keep iTunes folder organized Media". There are several reasons why this is not an option, mainly because iTunes is the absolute worst to organize your media folder. I've seen cases where iTunes dumps simply all your files perfectly organized in a single folder for you to figure out what that is when you get the file you need. No thanks, I'm perfectly capable of organizing my own files. Not to mention, my multimedia files are on a data disc and the app folder, where the files to iTunes library is on an SSD with limited storage. Then... Guard iTunes library trace the location of support using a "iTunes Music Library.xml" file. I've updated this file to use the new location and when I open iTunes on my new computer, everything is perfect. All my media is there with all my custom illustrations I apply (iTunes can also be really terrible at the corresponding work on music not purchased via iTunes!). If great, let's get my iPhone recognized now because it's really the only reason why I use iTunes. As soon as I connect my phone and it starts the synchronization process, it crushes everything in the XML file and returns all my music in the original location (now the music in the iTunes library has!'s next to all my music sync). You're going to go to a song and it will ask you the new location, I can go to, and then iTunes invites even to use this new location to update other files 'disappeared', but the problem is this feature only searches the subfolder where the particular file is located, you have access to what is in this case an album. Do you know how many albums I have? You mean I have to go to every single album and update the location manually? Once again, no thanks! So my thought at this point, ok, let's just resync all the music with the phone, that well that is always a huge pain given the extremely slow transfer speeds from your computer to your phone (Apple Hi, meet 3.1 USB or same USB 3.0) in combination with the size of my library (we're talking days to complete!), it's even less of a pain then go each file (or a piece of each album) and updated the location. On a side note - it would be really great if the synchronization on the Wi - Fi technology still works... I mean, they had what, over 4 years to operate and you're still lucky if your phone is recognized by Wi - Fi. That means I have to leave my phone on my computer for days and who really has the ability to do? Sorry, I digress. So, I removed all of my music from my phone and got iTunes to be happy with the new drive letter. Great, let's start the arduous process to sync my music on my phone. I re - activate the option synchronize my music and what happens, my iPhone again overwrites my iTunes library with the former location of media! Excuse me, but how is it reasonable to have the phone, which is a destination and contains a subset of your library, to be the registration system for which the files are stored in the source? I mean come on! This is absurd! I've always hated that Apple is owner and forces you to use iTunes (some of the worst software ever developed) to manage/sync your media. But for years, I have it justified by saying iPhone works simply. No worries. Well, I'll say, it does not just work and my insinuation that Apple made simple products that just don't work no longer holds water. At this point, I am very close to say goodbye to the iPhone and switch to Google project. I'm tired of less expensive phones friends surpassing my overpriced device that uses obsolete technology. Sort of, I'm sorry to dump all this on the community, but it is absolutely ridiculous that it's so complicated to change a drive letter and I am at my wits end.   Launch iTunes with down option, and then choose this library. You may need to change permissions on it, or select the volume in the Finder, choose get the information in the file menu and check the box for ignore ownership or permissions to this topic.

  Need help because I have recently taken the plunge and moved from PC to a Mac. I have can´t work is how to import my itunes library and the overall rating. in my opinion, it should be a simple thing but so far, all my efforts and solutions online did not work.

  I tried the data migration. This has created a new user. I thought that I could transfer the files in the set (all CD), but when I click on a song in the new user, it couldn t find the file. FYI I had consolidated the library itunes beforehand.

  I also tried to use an external HD drive. Same result even if I managed to put all my music on. I figured out how to export my rankings. Charge of their place and it worked until I clicked on a song and it couldn t find a file.

  This really should be simple so all advice very welcome.

  See make a library of portable split. A portable library can be moved from one platform to the other while keeping the ratings, playlists, etc. You can move the data over a network, or use an external drive. If you are using an external drive, so that you may need to copy the library twice larger Windows disks are NTFS format that OS X can read natively, but not will not write.   If your songs in your iTunes library, you can set up automatic synchronization for these playlists.

  Select the iPod in iTunes, so that you see on the screen of the settings in the iTunes window.  Along the left side of the window, in the sidebar, under settings, click on music.  To the right, you see music in the iPod settings screen.

  NOTE: Since it is a new Nano, I guess it's currently empty.  All the songs from the iPod that are NOT in your iTunes library will be lost.

  On the screen settings of music , at the top, tick the box to Sync music.  Below, if your iPod has enough storage capacity to hold your entire music library, you can choose the option synchronize entire music library.  And click apply at the bottom.

  Otherwise, choose the option synchronize playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Below, look under playlists and find the playlists you want to synchronize with the iPod and select them.  The capacity at the bottom of the window bar indicates how much storage on the iPod is used with the current selection.  When you are finished, click apply down button to synchronize your selection to iPod.

  Further, you can update the playlists in iTunes (add and remove songs).  The iPod has no need to be connected.  The next time that you connect the iPod (or click sync , if already connected), iTunes automatically updated the iPod with the same changes.  If you have the iPod sync the music library of anyvalue, iTunes keeps the iPod updated with any change in your music library.
