MsiExec.exe is broken in Windows XP

I came across this problem 2 weeks ago. Found that msiexec.exe has been broken.
Rename the exec and dll does not solve the problem, although the dll have been resettled after rebooting twice. The executable was not.
Download the reinstallable has not worked (i.e. wrong version of Windows) because I had SP2.
So I backed up the data and removed the SP2. Took me 2 hours. And it worked!
MsiExec.exe was restored and updated correctly adobe acrobat.

A day later SP2 has been installed using auto-update. I did not have the updates since then, so I'm not sure that it still works.

Hi JosVaassen,

Work of msiexec.exe is not dependent on Windows XP Service Pack 2.

You try to install any program to confirm the same.

  • MsiExec.exe * 32 keeps trying to install when I start my computer

MsiExec.exe * 32 keeps trying to install when I start my computer

    Hi id75080

Thank you for using the Microsoft Answers Forums!

When you get this error? You try to install a program? Or just come to the top when you restart?

    Try these steps and check:

Step 1: Stop and restart the Windows Installer Service.

    1. click on the Start button or press the Windows keyboard.

    2. in the search box, type Services and then click on the Services element that appears at the top.

    3. expand the Services window and then scroll down to Windows Installer.

    4. right click on the Windows Installer list item and then click on stop, right click again and then click Start.

Step 2: Unregister and re-register Windows Installer.

To do this, follow these steps:
    1. click on start and then click Run.
    2. in the Open box, type msiexec /unreg and then press ENTER.
    3. click on start and then click Run.
    4. in the Open box, type msiexec/regserver, and then press ENTER.

    Step 3: SFC Scan

The SFC utility allows administrators to perform an analysis of all protected resources to make sure they are the correct version. Whether SFC should find all incorrect versions in one of these protected resources, SFC will be replaced by the correct versions.

You can still run a sfc on the windows vista computer scan. To run a scan suite sfc as follows:

    a. Click Start, in the start search bar type cmd, right-click on the command prompt icon in the box programs and then click Run as administrator.

    b. at the command prompt type sfc/scannow , and then press ENTER.

NOTE: you must log in using the administrator account and try to install it like that. Or you can also try running the program by right clicking and select "run as Administrator". It should work.

Step 4: Utility Windows Install CleanUp:

Windows Installer CleanUp Utility may be able to help. You can use the utility to remove installation information for programs that were installed by using Windows Installer. Remember that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall on.

  • MsiExec.exe running at all times

Seems I'm always 2 instances of msiexec.exe running at all times. So far, I ran the Windows Installer Clean up tool, enabling the service to manual start and down anti virus scans. I can disable it in the Task Manager, but as soon as I restart, they are all two back on even if I do not want to install anything.

When I try to install anything, I get the message that windows is already install something and try again later. I manually close msiexc.exe with the Task Manager and then the installation goes smoothly.

    Thank you

    Roy
