Multicast OSPF between ESXi 5.5 vSwitches bl460c gen7

I have a big problem with ospfs multicast traffic between the hosts of ESXi 5.5 hp BL460c g7 servers. My configuration is:

HP BL460c g7

ESXi 5.5.0, 1474528 (patch1)

Network Emulex_bootbank_elxnet_10.0.725.2 driver - 1OEM.550.0.0.1331820. See my other DIS why (ESXi 5.5 P01 (1474528) GROUP HP BL460C G7)

vSwitches not dvSwitches

A different version of Clavister firewall and pfsense (Quagga OSPF) vms

I noticed that ospfs multicast traffic can leave the local vswitch. Place the firewalls on the same host, adjencyn works as it should, but as soon as they are on different hosts, they cannot establish a State of 2-way.

According to a dump of packets from a pfSense machine, the pfsense can send packets Hello out its vSwitch (Dest 224.0.0.5) but does not recive any externally.

No matter who else have similar problems?

Thank you

Hello. Unfortunately, nothing that I have tried to solve the problem. The problem persisted even after that I went up to version 5.5.0, 1623387.

The solution was to migrate to distributed switches. What honesty has been the best over the long term.

  • As part of the SAR cert is to have a NW separated between ESXi host required for VMotion or is it OK to use IP for VMotion management, in the execution of Certification tests.

As part of the SAR cert is "have a NW/dedicated separate between hosts ESXi (on which we GOS) mandatory for VMotion or is - OK to use IP for VMotion management in the execution of Certification tests.»

Note that the verification passed Test when you use management IP for Vmotion and without a dedicated connection to NW between ESXi hosts.

Separate dedicated network interface cards preferred. No problem with the test after this change case.

It is easily possible to Exchange routes using a 6224 for a Cisco 7204 OSPF? My cisco has always been eigrp between all other routers.

  • How is it that I can ping between ESXi vmkernel interfaces with the sizes of package exceeding the value set in my passage upstream and one located in my vmkernel port group itself?

I have a 10 GB dell powerconnect 8024f the switch and the firmware is OLD, but the port config shows maximum frame size = 9000 to all cable ports

2 guests ESXi 5.5 wired, build 1331820, put each host computer network is managed by a single port dual qlogic 8150 ANC

When I connect to my windows VM to check my new 10 GB connectivity (it is configured for jumbo mtu = 9000 frames) and ping-l 8190 against ESXi vmkernel interface that was MTU of 1500, I get an answer without any packet loss... How can it be if the port is configured for only 1500 MTU?  I thought that the two vmkernel port group and vswitch properties must have 9000 mtu defined, it appears that the vswitch properties override the port group properties.

But I know I must be missing something, a few important concepts, somewhere, because when I connect to ESXi via ssh I can ping devices with values greater than 8190 and not just windows virtual machines that reside on the same host where the ping uses the internal bus, but I am referring to the connections of the host of other ESXi on the switch management.

In summary - how the VMkernel does ping and response to pings of bigger sizes greater than the value of the switch upstream?   and why do ping with large packets get answers when the vmkernel port group is always set at 1500, is this a bug or is this feature obsolete?   I remember specifically in ESXi5 that I had to configure the vmkernel port group and the vswitch for this property to work.

Unless you specify "Don ' t fragment" (-f for Windows) you will be able to use any size package successfully.

For ESXi, take a look at Troubleshooting ESXi Jumbo Frames.

  • Storage vMotion-Direct between ESXi hosts

    Hi all

It is my first time on the boards, I hope it's the right way to go on this subject.

I have problems with Storage vMotion, it's not a set up us would use normally, rather than by necessity with the current scenario.

We have a desktop which has 2 x 5.1 ESXi hosts. They do not have a budget for SAN with the installation of HBA, and it is only a single requirement. I have to migrate virtual machines from one to the other, but with no external storage. I wait with Storage vMotion directly from a local data store to another.

I activated the software iSCSI on both ESXi hosts

Created a vSwitch separated with a VMkernal on two physical hosts

The two VMkernals are on a separate subnet * 172.16.1 and production vSwitch is 192.168.5. *.

The NIC allocated for the 172.16.1 network. * is both connected to the same physical switch.

I ping the VMkernal and the vmkping the VMkernal

Scan for storage again and nothing shows up.

I used software iSCSI before, for a long time so I'm probably rusty. Dynamic discovery is normally indicated in the SAN to pick up storage, and finds it just local storage on each host itself.

In this scenario, I told the IP address of the ESX2 VMkernal on 172.16.1 ESX1. * since I have no external storage. I think it is, I'm wrong, but I don't know what else to do to recover local data warehouses.

Any ideas to try would be very appreciated.

    Thank you

Sorted by using 5.1 feature Shared-Nothing vMotion

You must open the ssh ports in the firewall of ESXi.

In vSphere Client check the host-> Configuration-> Security Profile-> Firewall-> properties

and select "SSH Client" If you need to scp connections outgoing resp. "SSH server" If you want to enable incoming connections to PCs.

    Hello

This work is a line perhaps? If you use VMFS as target, you must double check the block size, if it is the default 1 MB, the maximum size of a vmdk disk is 256 GB.

The value you got 274878668800 bytes, divided three times by 1024, gives you exactly 256.0007095336914 GB. This is probably the problem.

PS: I saw your error screencap you come to Italy, visit us on the pages of Italian user :-) group

  • Networking ESXI establish two vswitches and 2 NICs on different networks.

OK hope someone has an idea.

Have two network cards and just connect the second network card but my setup requires that the first NIC physicle

    10.10.0.0 network, 255.255.255.0 subnet, Gateway, Vswitch 10.10.0.105 0.

    the second nic physicle

    100.100.0.0 network, 255.255.0.0 subnet, 100.100.0.1 gateway Vswitch 1

I need the machine virtual first Vswitch network and some on second Vswitch network.

At the moment I don't see how to set the ip address of the second network card or the gateway?

Is there a way to do this?

I have the updated Vswitches in place ok and network adapters are attached to the different vswitches.

When a physical NETWORK card is assoiciated with a vSwitch, he is forced to behave like a shared on a physical switch port. However, there is more no uique to the physical NETWORK adapter configuration. It passes the traffic of the VMs and the core of the virtual machine to the physical network as an uplink. MAC addresses and IP addresses inside the frames come from virtual NICs attached to the virtual switch.

You define IP addresses and default gateways within the virtual machines and any VMkernel ports connected to the virtual switch.

Another way of thinking, is pretending the ESXi server has swallowed a bunch of switches and cards network is now the switch ports. You connect a box full of switches to your physical infrastructure, not a 'normal' server

  • VMware esxi 5.1 vswitches one or two?

I have Setup iSCSI from other providers with vmware and, often, their States of documentation to use 2 vSwitches with a single NIC in each (if you have 2 NICS for iSCSI).  It comes to iSCSI or NFS (NetApp).

Is this possible with Equallogic storage?  Or do I have to use the unique vSwitch method with 2 NIC in the Equallogic documentation?  Is this really important because each NETWORK card is linked to different vmkernel with option?

    The material is...

    Reference Dell r.620

2 - 10gig NIC teamed up for all-access network in Nexus 5548 (Lots of VLAN management, vmotion, vm)

2 - 10gig NIC for iSCSI in any other Nexus 5548.

All Intel X 520-2 (or whatever the name is for that NIC)

Also with 5.1 update 1, just to be clear, I do have the network heartbeat more?

    Thank you!

Some SAN solutions use (or can use) 2 subnets. In this case, I suggest using a unique vSwitch to each subnet and vmnic indeed.

However, for Equallogic, I recommend to use the Equallogic document on how to configure vSphere5:

    www.dellstorage.com/.../DownloadAsset.aspx

In short: use a unique vSwitch with multiple VMNIC and isolate each to a single vmnic vmkernel. If you are using a version of vSphere earlier than 5.1, you want to implement the beating of the heart/storage iSCSI as the document talks. If you use 5.1 it is no longer necessary.

  • Share of CPU between ESXi hosts in a cluster?

Is it possible to configure a cluster with a pool of CPU resources such as all CPUS of all ESXi hosts in the cluster are in the pool and if a virtual machine starts using more CPU that's current host has it can draw another ESXi host CPU to deal with?

A virtual machine can use CPU only from the host where the virtual machine works... There is no way to allocate CPU of multiple hosts to a single virtual machine.

  • Slow iSCSI-IP connection between ESXi and DataCore Virtual storage via 10 Gbit cards

    Hi all

at the moment, I have test the following configuration:

Site #1: DELL PowerEdge R730xd with 10 Gbit NIC and DataCore-V DataCore Virtual Storage under ESXi (vSphere 6.0.0 build Standard, 3380124)

Site #2: Apple MacPro6, 1 with 10 Gbit NIC and ESXi (6.0.0 vSphere Standard, build of 3380124)

DataCore # 1 server has a disk via iSCSI to ESXi on #2. The connection is running. Up here, so good, but for example when I start a Storage vMotion on #2 of local SSD on the iSCSI disk, speed is exactly 1 Gbps. interesting is that the speed increase when I start a second Storage vMotion and still when I start a third Storage vMotion etc. This behavior is clearly visible in my attached screenshot.

To me that sounds like to it no matter what iSCSI-IP connection is limited to 1 Gbps.

All the components used are certified VMware.

Any ideas that I can check for this problem?

    Thank you very much

    Migo

The reason for this behavior is that the MacPro6, 1 has two interfaces of iSCSI software that points to a DataCore frontend. It is not allowed. After you have disabled the second interface of software iSCSI, growth up to full 10 Gbps speed.

  • Different PowerCLI between Esxi 4.1 and 5?

I want to buy a book on PowerCLI and there is one on Amazon called " " "VMware VSphere PowerCLI reference: Automating VSphere Administration" which was released in April 2011, but it does not mention which version it is, so my question is PowerCLI the same in terms of orders etc no matter what version of Esxi, you have.  I don't want to buy a book and possibly Trainsignal course PowerCLI to find it obsolete and useless.

Thank you first of all pointers and but ignorance when it comes to command lines

The book was written while PowerCLI 4.1 is the real version.

Fortunately, PowerCLI maintains backward compatibility (most of the time).

In other words, newer versions of PowerCLI add new cmdlets in order to cover the new features of vSphere, but the cmdlets from the previous version are still valid. That's why you see each new version of PowerCLI with cmdlets more than the previous version.

In fact the PowerCLI reference book does not work through all available cmdlets PowerCLI one by one. The book takes all aspects of managing a vSphere environment and shows how this can be done using PowerCLI.

It is similarly for the course TrainSignal, the cmdlets in the last version may not be there, but the course will give you a good introduction to using PowerCLI.

I recommend putting both book and TS, on your Christmas wish list, but then again I could be accused of being a little biased, being one of the authors of the book
