Networking ESXI establish two vswitches and 2 NICs on different networks.

OK hope someone has an idea.

Have two network cards and just connect the second network card but my setup requires that the first NIC physicle

10.10.0.0 network, 255.255.255.0 subnet, Gateway, Vswitch 10.10.0.105 0.

the second nic physicle

100.100.0.0 network, 255.255.0.0 subnet, 100.100.0.1 gateway Vswitch 1

I need the machine virtual first Vswitch network and some on second Vswitch network.

At the moment I don't see how to set the ip address of the second network card or the gateway?

Is there a way to do this?

I have the updated Vswitches in place ok and network adapters are attached to the different vswitches.

When a physical NETWORK card is assoiciated with a vSwitch, he is forced to behave like a shared on a physical switch port. However, there is more no uique to the physical NETWORK adapter configuration. It passes the traffic of the VMs and the core of the virtual machine to the physical network as an uplink. MAC addresses and IP addresses inside the frames come from virtual NICs attached to the virtual switch.

You define IP addresses and default gateways within the virtual machines and any VMkernel ports connected to the virtual switch.

Another way of thinking, is pretending the ESXi server has swallowed a bunch of switches and cards network is now the switch ports. You connect a box full of switches to your physical infrastructure, not a 'normal' server

  • Why do I need "Promiscuous" Mode when you use multiple vSwitches and a bridge?

    Hello guys,.

    5.5 ESXi running.

I created two vSwitches and putting multiple virtual machines in each vSwitch. I have a CentOS VM with two network cards, one in each vSwitch. I configured the CentOS VM to work as a bridge. I could spend between devices on a vSwitch pings, but ping has no devices on a vSwitch devices on the other (through the CentOS acting as a bridge). The ARP requests have been sent across the bridge, but have never had sent answers ARP. I checked around online and someone recommended to enable Promiscuous Mode. I activated the Promiscuous Mode (changing to refuse to accept) on the two vSwitches (which is then applied to the change to all virtual machines). You can read more about that here: VMware KB: how "Promiscuous" mode operates on the virtual level switch and portgroup

Now all of a sudden, everything works.

    My question is: why?

I think that I don't want to Promiscuous Mode unless it must be such that it will result in more traffic to each VM it had reached before. I don't really understand why I need to authorize this change, and any help would be nice!

Without promiscuous mode, vSwitch and port group will only transmit traffic VMs (MAC addresses) that are directly related to the port groups, he will not learn the MAC addresses that, in your case, are the other side of the bridge. The "Promiscuous" mode, all traffic is sent to each virtual machine on the vSwitch and port group and it's virtual machine to decide what to do with the network packets. As you have already mentioned, this isn't a parameter that you want to apply to a large number of virtual machines. For this reason, you can create a second group of ports on the vSwitch with only of CentOS virtual machine and activate the "Promiscuous" mode on only this group port rather than the vSwitch.

  • ESXI hosts 5-2 and the best way to configure vSwitch and Nic redundancy

    Hi all

Could someone help me find the best way to configure the vNetwork on 2 5 ESXI host for redundancy.  Once I managed to correctly configure the 2 hosts I will seek to use the same installation process for 6 guests.  3 sites with 2 hosts on each site managed all of vCentre Server

I have 2 DL380 G7 servers 5 ESXI installed on a class 10, 8 GB SD card, I'm looking to install VSA on the 2 hosts on each server with 4 TB of internal storage (8 * 600 GB 10 k SAS).  Each server has a gigabit integrated 4-port NIC and I installed a 2nd NIC gigabit PCIe 4 ports, I also x 2 16 switches of port with Layer 3 routing.  I use vSphere 5 Standard acceleration Kit I am looking to use vCentre server for managing, vMotion for maintenance, HA for the failover and VM 10/15 (vCentre Server Std, DB SQL to vCentre Server, Exchange 2010, SQL Server 2008 R2, IIS Intranet, Helpdesk, 1 DC, 2 Domain Controller, AV Server, WSUS, SCCM Server, and Terminal Server server).

What would be the best way to install and configure the network for performance and redundancy and am I missing something?

    My thoughts are, Teaming: -.

    vCenter - vswitch0 - port1 on NIC1 and port1 on NIC 2 - port1 on NIC1 to physical switch 1 - port1 on NIC2 to physical switch 2

    vMotion - vswitch1 - port2 on NIC1 and port2on NIC 2 - port2 on NIC1 to physical switch 1 - port2 on NIC2 to physical switch 2

    HA - vswitch3 - port3 on NIC1 and port3on NIC 2 - port3 on NIC1 physics 1 - port3 on NIC2 to physical switch 2 switch

    VM - vswitch4 - port4 on NIC1 and port4on NIC 2 - port4 on NIC1 to physical switch 1 - port4 on NIC2 to physical switch 2

or do I need an additional NIC on each server to hit the VM 12-6 VM for 2 ports on 2 NETWORK interface card, or maybe something else I missed?

    Thank you

In your case, to keep it simple and what I can say here is what would be my recommendation:

    3 standard vSwitches

    vSwitch0:

    • Management - vmnic0, vmnic2

    vSwitch1:

    • vMotion - vmnic1, vmnic3

    vSwitch2:

    • VM network - vmnic4, vmnic5, vmnic6, vmnic7

The only reason why that I didn't split the VM in other network adapters shipped is because the difference in the types of the DL380 adapter shipped and the PCIe quad.

    Hello

I have 4 NIC in Server Blade 7 (ESXI 5), would like to dedecate 2 NIC for (Vmnetwork, management and vMotion) & NIC (iSCSI traffic) 2 with equallogic SAN.

I equallogic guide to configure ESXI with it, but how do I configure (Vmnetwork, management and vMotion) with NIC 2, my priority is excellent speed for my virtual machine, and then nothing else.

Then just go for classic switch.

The configuration is a lot depend on existing infra, the trunk, the physical switch for redundant network & balance, 100 or network 1GbE, no.. virtual machines and etc. If there is a new configuration, I suggest you trunk 2 x available vmnic (the vm network) to balance the load and better performance.

  • Handling VSwitch and network

Hi, I have have a question: How fact un Working VSwitch , If two virtual machines to communicate between them. If the data on the network is sent to the NIC and then the material or communication is managed in the VSwitch?

    Greetings from the Germany!

    Michael Burkhardt

If virtual machines are on the same vSwitch and VLAN traffic is not struck the physical network adapter.  If virtual machines have been on different vSwitches, traffic would hit the physical network.  Even if the virtual machines are on different VLAN traffic would pass through your router.

  • Reference Dell MD3200i correct editing with IP system and the NIC for faster network speeds

    Hi all

I worked on this project for a while now. I did a lot of research and have contacted Dell several times. I need help.

I have 2 sets of identical to use for Hyper-V clusters servers. We bought a Dell MD3200i in November, we also bought a Dell 5424 switch and a Cisco SLM2048 switch. These servers have Real Tek 2 network cards for iSCSI Jumbo frames is 9 k

The Dell MD3200i is two SAN controllers. Dell 5424 is the iSCSI optimized switch and Cisco is a 48 switch ports. iSCSI is on its own network that nothing else is connected to it. (There is an Iomega NAS and a promise Vtrak SAN Tech with all current domain of execution with iSCSI controller)

    Reference Dell MD3200i controller 0 Port 0 192.168.130.101 controller 1 Port 0 192.168.131.101

    Controller controller Port 1 0 192.168.130.102 1 1 192.168.131.102

    Controller controller Port 2 0 192.168.130.103 1 2 192.168.131.103

    Controller controller Port 3 0 192.168.130.103 1-3 192.168.131.104

Cisco switch has 1 VLAN n ° 1 on it and the 130 subnet inside elements. There are 8 connections to the switch. 4 controller 0 and 1 of each of the servers. It has an IP of 192.168.132.4, but that switch IP does not make difference. Lighted Jumbo frames

Dell switch has 2 of #1 for various things such as the domain controller, Vtrack, and SIN. Subnet 2 is 131 and has a total of 8 connectors inside. 4 in 1 controller and 1 from each of the servers. Lighted Jumbo frames. The switch IP address is 192.168.132.2

Groups of servers. Each server node running Windows 2008 R2 SP1 and running hyper-v with virtual server clusters / storage folder on them. 2 Realtek NIC with Jumbo frames made 9 k ProdNode1 and ProdNode2 have 12 Core i7 CPU with 12 GB memory, EXNode1 and ExNode2 have 12 Core i7 CPU with 24 GB of memory.

    ProdNode1 iSCSI-1 192.168.130.110 ProdNode1 iSCSI-2 192.168.131.110

    ProdNode2 iSCSI-1 192.168.130.120 ProdNode2 iSCSI-2 192.168.131.120

    ExNode1 iSCSI-1 192.168.130.130 ExNode1 iSCSI-2 192.168.131.130

    ExNode2 iSCSI-1 192.168.130.140 ExNode2 iSCSI-2 192.168.131.140

Portal discovery iSCSI on ProdNode1 went to 192.168.130.110 192.168.130.101 and 192.168.131.110 192.168.131.101 each of the other servers Discovery Portal have been pairs like this.

iSCSI tab click on add 8 MPIO sessions at each of the ports on the MD3200i from Dell, target. For example, I added 1 session of 192.168.130.101 using it. Add Session,--> activate--> Advanced Mutlipath--> Local--> IP 192.168.130.110 initiator and target 192.168.131.101 iSCSI adapter. This is repeated on all servers. 4 connections for each NIC.

The network is very slow. It revolved around 2 to 4 MB/MIN and it should be much faster. Initially, we had only the Cisco switch with only 1 VLAN and everything connected directly to it. I read somewhere that MPIO has been the problem, so I went through the same configuration but does not verify the MPIO checkbox above. Once this has been done, the network speed went up to 1.5 GB/Min but modular storage Dell was not happy, and virtual servers would fail and the connection is not very stable.

What wrong with my setup? Can I directly home and fix the servers directly to the PowerVault and will make stable and allow for failover and redundancy NIC? I need to get this stable so I can move with something else.

    Thank you Ron

  • vSwitch and NIC.

    Hello

ESX35, what is the gain in speed if I attribute more than 1 NIC to a vSwitch?  I have a vSwitch with 3 active adapters 100 MB and 1 adapter ensures 100 MB.  This means that the vSwitch can talk to a switch physical gigabit high-speed 300 MB?  I copied a 10 GB from a physical PC to a virtual machine, but do not see a difference between a 3 adapter vswitch and a vSwitch 1 adapter.

    Thank you.

    Exactly.

  • question about nic teaming and management nic

I just created a system of esxi 6 on a HP dl585g7 with 4 built in NIC.  Worked well but I've only used one of the network adapters and it served the network management card and serve the guests.  Now, I want to configure to use all 4 cards.  I set up my hp Switch 5500 with 4 ports as an aggregate and tagged all the VLANS for them.  Don't know how to configure the NIC of the console management.  Do I have to leave one of the NICs to make a network management card?  Select all network cards on the management console?

You have not really need of aggregation of links allows you to use all four cards. vSphere uses its own algorithms for load balancing to distribute traffic between links rising vSwitch. You can use standard vSwitches ether and LACP channels on vSwitches distributed, but is generally not necessary.

If this is the case, then just connect all uplinks to vSwitches and you will be able to use all four links to send/receive traffic. If you use VLANs, be sure to assign VLAN IDS to groups of ports and configure circuits on the side of the switch.

A different version of Clavister firewall and pfsense (Quagga OSPF) vms

I noticed that ospfs multicast traffic can leave the local vswitch. Place the firewalls on the same host, adjencyn works as it should, but as soon as they are on different hosts, they cannot establish a State of 2-way.

According to a dump of packets from a pfSense machine, the pfsense can send packets Hello out its vSwitch (Dest 224.0.0.5) but does not recive any externally.

No matter who else have similar problems?

    Thank you

Hello. Unfortunately, nothing that I have tried to solve the problem. The problem persisted even after that I went up to version 5.5.0, 1623387.

The solution was to migrate to distributed switches. What honesty has been the best over the long term.

  • Question on the iSCSI initiators and several NIC

    I read the attached document.

The document speaks to create more iSCSI initiators to talk to the SAN (I understand this bit).

Page 15 step 4: VMkernel Ports associated with physical cards

The document speaks about 3 network cards that have been attributed to a vSwitch.

The document then continue to talk about the creation of links to individual access to a network adapter for each VMkernel path.

    My question is:

    Why do this?

Why not create three separate vSwitches and create an initiator iSCSI for each vSwitch?

    VCP3 & VCP4 32846

    VSP4

    VTSP4

Why would you not create a vSwitch for each iSCSI NIC and VMkernel port. Why the document insists on putting all the NIC in a vSwitch?

The number and type of vSwitches is not interesting.  You can use a vSwitch or vSwitches as much as you have physical NIC.  It works as well for the former two vSwitches static or vDS.  The configuration example is just one of the ways that you can do.  Any combination is supported.

  • Linking the two vSwitches in ESX

    Hello

I have a question.  I have attached the script with this post.   To set breiefly,

    (1) I'm having an ESX host with a single physical network adapter VMNIC0

    (2) I created 2 vSwitches with the default.  So totally 3 vSwitches it

(2.1) vSwitch0 - dedicated for the Service Console and VMKernel and connected to VMNIC0 for external connectivity N/W

vSwitch1 (2,2) - two virtual machines are connected over

vSwitch2 (2,3) - two virtual machines are connected.

Please note that the 2 vSwitches (vSwitch1 & 2) are not connected with each other and also unrelated to physics N/W adapters

    (3) the two VMS in vSwitch1 can communicate with each other without any problem

    (4) the two VMS in vSwitch2 can communicate with each other without any problem

    My Question is;

How can I connect these 2 vSwitches (vSwitch1 & 2) with each other so that two vSwitches virtual computers can communicate with each other

This question may seem very simple to most of you... I understand... but I don't know how to do this.  Thanks for any help/entries in this...

    Thank you.

    vSwitches cannot be connected together.

If these clients must communicate with each other, they must be on a vSwitch. The traffic between two vSwitchws must pass through the physical wire. So you have at least two NETWORK interface card to connect two vSwitches as a teddy bear can only be connected to a vSwitch.

You can always separate the guests using different port groups.
