My computer didn't work since I installed SP2 for Vista

After installing service pack 2 for Vista my computer restarted itself and everything that appears is the screen with the following message Windows Boot Manager:

Windows could not start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To solve the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. choose your language settings, and then click "next".
3. click on "Repair your computer."

If you do not have the disk, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

File: \Windows\system32\drivers\pci.sys
Status: 0xc0000098
Info: Windows could not load a critical system driver is missing or corrupt.

No matter what I do, the computer always comes back to the screen. I tried to insert my installation disc, but the computer does not recognize it. (I have no Vista disks, I have the installation disc that came with my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop.

Suggestions?

1 make the repair disk Bootable from the info below and do a startup repair.

2 Dell reinstall info.

Restore point:

Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.

Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...

Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If the restore does not work, do a repair disc to do a Startup Repair:
As is the case with most computers/laptops these days, they do not come with good Vista disc to repair only the recovery disks.
As your falls into the above category: download the ISO on the provided link and do a repair of the disc.
Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.
When you have changed that, insert the Bootable disk you did in the drive and reboot.
It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows Vista, and is just a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. Technically, we could re-create this installation with downloadable media media freely from Microsoft (namely the Microsoft WAIK, several gigabyte download); but it is pretty darn decent of Microsoft to present Windows users who might not be able to create such a thing on their own.
    I use Vista Home Premium (32 bit).  When Windows Update recently
    tried to install SP2 (several times), the quoted error message
    repeatedly prevented installation.  Google showed a number of similar
    references to the problems associated with SP1 (from one year or if there are and less).  Is
    There is a work around for this message because it applies to SP2?
    Biggar Gordon
    Houston, Texas
    Hi Colonel biggs,
    Welcome to the Forums Microsoft Vista
    This problem may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
    · A program on your computer interfered with the installation of the service pack.
    · There is an inconsistency in the store of Windows services. The store Windows maintenance is a required component to install service packs.
    To resolve this problem, try each resolution in the 'General resolution"and the"Advanced Troubleshooting"section in the order in which they are presented. After trying a resolution, try to install the service pack again. If you can't always install the service pack, try the next resolution.
    Resolution 1: Install the stand-alone package for the service pack instead of using Windows Update to install the Service Pack
    Note If you have already tried to install the stand-alone package for the service pack and you have encountered this problem, skip this resolution and go to resolution 2.
    If you don't know if you've tried to install the stand-alone package for the service pack, it is recommended that you try the following steps to install the stand-alone package for the service pack. By using the stand-alone package to install the service pack, you eliminate installation issues that may be related to Windows Update. This simplifies the troubleshooting process
    Solution 2: Run the system update readiness tool
    System Update tool checks your computer and trying to resolve certain conditions that can interfere with the installation of the updates or other software. However, before you download the tool, you must determine whether your computer is running a 32-bit version or a 64 bit version of the Windows Vista operating system. If your computer is Windows Vista installed, and you know which version you are using, go to the section "how to download the system update readiness tool. If you are unsure which version your computer has installed, follow these steps:
    1. click on Start
    2. collapse this includes it in the Search box, type System, and then click System in the programs list.
    The operating system is displayed as follows:
    · For a 32 - bit version operating system, 32-bit operating system appears for the system type under System.
    · For a 64 - bit version operating system, 64-bit operating system appears for the system type under System.
    After you determine which version of Windows Vista, your computer is running, download system update readiness tool.
    Resolution 3: Close or disable any applications that may be running, restart the computer and then install the service pack
    1. Close all applications and restart your computer.
    2. Once your computer has restarted, disable any antivirus or any antispyware application that can load during the startup process. You can normally disable the notification area application. This area is located in the bottom right corner of the computer screen. To disable an application in the notification area, follow these steps:
      1. Right-click the icon of the third-party program.
      2. Click Close, disable, outputor an equivalent term in the list of options. If these options are not available, you may open the application and then close or disable in the application.
    1. As soon as you close the antivirus or the antispyware software, try to install the download package full of the service pack that you previously downloaded from the following Microsoft Download Center Web site:
    http://www.Microsoft.com/downloads (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads)
    1. After completing the installation of the service pack, enable the antivirus or the antispyware software that you disabled in the previous steps.
  • Is it still useful to install SP2 for Vista on 64-bit system? What are the benefits?
    OK, so I have Windows Vista Premium Home Edition on a laptop HP with Service Pack 1 installed. I have disabled the automatic updates of Windows functionality, because there are so many unnecessary and space-hogging updates that I can't be bothered. I've never had a problem with the system or security issues (I use Avast Antivirus among other tools/software as needed) and I've had this phone for almost 2 years now. In the past, whenever I installed a major update, it will eventually create problems that were not there before the update so I'm really hesitant to install SP2. ONLY that I even consider it is because I have problems with Windows Movie Maker and tried to install Windows Live Movie Maker, but it won't let me do that without having installed SP2. To install SP2, I have install all the boring updates I have never installed SP1. so, all this makes me wonder if it's the same penalty to install SP2 in the first place? I can use other video editing software, if necessary, but if someone can tell me what SP2 has or does that SP1 is not, and all the benefits of the installation, I would be better able to make a decision. Any advice? Info?
    Thank you!
    Hello
    I have a Toshiba Satellite A300 1 9 b I bought 9 months ago. It has Vista Home Premium 32 bit SP1. I have serious problems with the updates:
    1 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and the .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x 86 - I can't install this for the last two months. Whenever it appears that the installation has failed.
    2 security Update for Windows Vista (KB961501) can be installed as well
    3. my Internet Explorer 8 does not work for the past two weeks. I tried to download it and when I did, then, my computer does not restart. I had to use sans-echec Mode, uninstall IE8 to return to Normal Mode
    4. I also tried to download and install SP2 for Vista, but it failed.
    I am very worried. Please suggest me what I should do.
    Thanks for your help.
    Stéphane
    I think that the decision of the antivirus program is a personal opinion
    I put t like McAfee and Norton because they need a lot of system resources and do a slower computer.
    I prefer AntiVir and Kaspersky Security suite. The two programs have good scan engine and don t need a lot of system resources. They are easy to use to use it.
    AntiVir is free but it s just an antivirus. Kaspersky Security suite also contains a firewall, antispam filter and more.
    It s your choice what program you are using. ;)
    I can't install SP2 for Vista. I installed SP1 and I tried to install sp2 via windows update in which the update actually installed, but after the reboot, I get a message saying that the update could not be configured correctly and changes reverted.
    I also tried to install it manually, but I get an error message saying "C:\Windows\system32\sqmapi.dll is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.     Hi MichaelPlaster,
    Given that you are always faced with the question, I suggest doing an InPlace Upgrade\Repair installation using the full version of Windows Vista installation disc and try to install the stand-alone SP1 package.
    Note perform a repair installation will not damage files and applications that are currently installed on your computer. However, before you perform an Inplace upgrade, you can take a backup of important data. In case of a worst case scenario, you may have to reinstall all the programs. Make sure that you back up personal data to disks or other external storage devices before performing an upgrade on the spot.
    To perform an upgrade in-place, follow these steps.
    a. close all running applications.
    b. Insert the Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 DVD into the DVD drive of the computer.
    c. in the settings window, click install now.
    Note If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:
    d. Click Start and type Drive: \setup.exe in the box to start the search.
    Note the placeholder drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD.
    e. list programs, click Setup.exe.
    f. in the settings window, click install now.
    g. click go online to get the latest updates for installation (recommended).
    h. type the CD key if you are prompted to do so.
    i. Select the operating system on the page "Windows Installer" you want to increase the power or Inplace.
    j. click Yes to accept the Microsoft software license agreement.
    k. on the type of installation do you want? screen, click upgrade.
    l. Once installation is complete, restart your computer.
    For more information, please see the link:
    How to perform an upgrade on the spot on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2
    Once the upgrade has completed, you must activate your copy of Windows Vista.
