my icons have mysteriously changed
some of my icons disappeared, leaving icons like this one generic where you normally select the program. I can still use the programs but want icons back! Help?
Right-click on an empty area of the desktop, and then click "arrange icons" (WXP) or 'view' (W7), then check "show desktop icons".

I am running Windows7 Home Premium. All the icons on my desktop have changed the Word icon, and each icon now on MS Word. I was not able to change this icon back to what they should be. MS Word has hijacked my office.
Any help gratefully received
I could solve the problem by restarting, F8 to open the boot options, choose the repair mode and system restore to a few days before.
The user of the pc says it all started when they double click on a file and was prompted to choose a program to open the file with... they chose Microsoft Word and it changed all of their MS Word icons icons.
Hope this helps someone.

All my icons have been changed in the Windows Photo Viewer
and everytime I open an icon it says that windows Photo Viewer cannot open it because I don't have the latest version of the photo viewer, I want just my icons back and open them the right program
Looks like you may have a virus or other malware. Get your updated antivirus program and boot into Safe Mode. Note that some viruses can hide from your normal antivirus program, so you really need to scan in Safe Mode. To enter in Safe Mode when you turn on first, press F8 on every seconds until you get the menu, and then select Safe Mode. Then run a complete system scan.

If that suits him fine. If this is not the case, use system restore to go back to an earlier date at the beginning of the problem. To run system restore, click Start-> programs-> Accessories-> System Tools-> system restore. Click on the box that says show more restore points.

You can check the corrupted system files. Open an administrator command prompt and run SFC if the above does not help. Click START, and then type CMD in the search box, right-click on CMD. EXE and click run as administrator. Then, from the command prompt type sfc/scannow.
-
Finally if all else fails, you can look at the rather cryptic system event log. To do that click on start-> Control Panel-> administration-> event viewer tools. Once in Event Viewer system log-click and scroll entries looking for these "error" with indicator see if you can find guidance on where the problem may be.

When you get your system in good working condition, I invite you to back up your system up to an external hard drive and make it regular periodic updates.

Viruses such as the behavior of the Acrobat Reader software. I have a laptop running WIN 7 and kaspersky AV. yesterday when I started my laptop I see all the icons from the browser on my QuickStart bar have been changed to the adobe reader icon and also observe that many other programs on my desktop have changed to the adobe reader icon. If you click the icon it opens adobe reader. I deleted Adobe reader using Add or remove programs and the icons back to normal. Yet once, I downloaded and installed Adobe reader 11. the problem has resurfaced. then again, I've uninstalled adobe reader software and installed Adobe Reader version 10 with the same question back. I have now uninstalled Adobe Reader. Please advise on how to install a working copy Adobe reader which will not infect or impinge upon other programs in my laptop.

When I shoot to the top of mozilla, I have a grey circle in front of the att home page. When I go to yahoo, this icon does not change in the purple circle. The gray circle left any Web site in the address bar. -maybe only unsecured sites because I see that I have a picture of a padlock when I was directed to this Web site. This happened recently and it happens every time I have shoot to the top of the Explorer.
The Site identity button has changed to protect users against hackers attempt to "spoof" legitimate research site buttons. The site icon still appears on the bookmarks and tabs, but not at the left end of the location/URL bar.

To restore the icons of the site to the location/URL bar, try the add-on again next:
- Restorer of favicon: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/favicon-restorer/ (has previously been reviewed by Firefox, click here to learn more about what it means that)
There is an add-on to add extra color to the new button

From the start, the display settings have been changed
I woke up this morning my computer starts before a pretty bad storm. I fear something my have been struck by lightning, but I do not know? When I booted up... Windows appeared to be normal... but all my icons are huge, with all the rest... seems to work very well with the internet, etc. I have change the size in pixels and it seemed to normal size, but somethings just not good. It almost seems as if I'm in safe mode, but I'm not. As the fonts are different... I do not know.. does anyone know what I need to do?

It could be that your video driver has been reset to some VGA default, rather than the specific card in your system. Check the properties of the display to see if it is correct for your telephone. (Right click on the desktop, properties, settings). You should see the screen and display adapter listed.
Unlikely, but you can also visit Accessiblility (display) settings in the control panel to make sure that none of those who have been changed.

all my jpg icons have an exclamation mark on them. don't know what that means?
You can open files - try some? Is this the same opening program has always opened before or it changed? Is that what the .jpg files and it is all .jpg files? No files .gif, or .tiff files or .avi or other types of image files or video files?
What Security Suite (or anti-virus or firewall program) you are average (name and version)?
When did start? Did you recently install new software and updates (or run scans)? I'm trying to understand what has changed since then until this started when she started.
Frankly, my first thought is that I don't know what that means, either - but maybe answers to these questions, we can identify the cause.
In the meantime (in case this solves the problem), try a restore of the system to a point in time BEFORE the 'problem' has started. Here is the procedure: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/. Don't forget to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will need to re - install any software and updates that you have installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for updates.
I hope this helps, or that we get enough information to understand.
Good luck and I look forward to your response.
