Name of the computer

Do I have reason to think that my computer name is the name that shows on the top of the box that appears when you click on the Start button? If this is not the case, what's the name and how can I change?

Thank you

  • Retrieve the name of the computer

Hard drive crashed on HP Pavilion.  When the hard drive has been rebuilt computer was given a different name.  When you try to perform a backup disk recovery not all data transfer via due to the change of name of the computer.  Don't remember old computer name.  Is there a log or how to get the old computer name and to rename the computer in the restoration of the order all information?

    Hello

No, I can't guess what username you have created before creating the backup you want to restore. The old username may be on the HARD disk. You will need the forensic software to find if it has not been replaced.

I will say this, unless you create images of system with all data, system configuration and user and files when the image has been created, you, as to all users, will have problems restoring files from config data and user.

    Hello

    As topic.

Please share how to fix my IP address is always changed. Thank you!

    Richard!

If the computers aren't on the same network and and/or that the network is not along the NetBIOS name - then you will need to use the IP address or some form of dynamic DNS.  The alternative would be to change your HOSTS file so that you can give the name you want and not have to remember the IP address that is now associated with that name in the HOSTS file.

  • What exactly happens when you change the name of the computer, and it asks you to restart?

What exactly happens when you change the name of the computer, and it asks you to restart - relating to the registration and identification of network?  Specifically when a computer isn't yet in one area but is still in a working group.  Y at - it show any PC by informing other computers it's name has changed?

Computers into working groups are actively seeking each other, so if you rename a computer, it will not be shown anything. The restart is to erase the name of origin since the system cache, he will think that it's always the old name until the reboot takes place. Work computers is simply 'shake hands' with each other whenever they need to communicate.

Computers that are part of a domain are created a 'computer' account that is assigned a random password that changes every 30 days by default automatically. These computer accounts work almost identical to an Active Directory user account, which means that they are not proactive they simply cached credentials with their permissions to provide if / when requested by heritage in the environment.
Users and computers Active Directory accounts are stored in the NTDS. SAID the database, the backbone of an AD environment. When a computer name changes in one area, it takes the PC restarted simply for the PC. The change of name in Active Directory will replicate throughout the environment based on the settings of replication of this environment.
I'm too simplify all this, but the general concept is there.
  • How can I change the name of the computer, C; \Documents and Settings\Margie\MyDocuments had to leave "Margie" or rename

Using Windows XP - how to change the name on the computer.  Am not able to remove/change the word "Margie":

    C:\Documents and Settings\MARGIE\My recemment\...

Used Microsoft Help but I am not able to locate where this comes in the settings.   We are on a network (without domain).

    Can you please help.

    Concerning

    Helen

"MARGIE" in "C:\Documents and Settings\MARGIE\... is not a"computer name", it's a user"Profile name".  Once a user is created and its associated profile, this name cannot be changed directly.  The only practical way to change that is to create a new user, copy the data from the user profile of MARGIE in this new user and then delete the profile of MARGIE.  To do this, pretend that the "MARGIE" user profile is corrupted and then follow the instructions in the following article:

  • Change the username on the start to something else, as the name of the computer

    I'm on a domain.
I would like to change the username on the start menu for anything other than the username.
User ID would be ok. Name of the computer would be even better.
I see a number of things that could go instead.
    How is that possible?

It would be nice to be able to customize the name of this poster in the startmenu.
Too bad Microsoft don't think that in time there is.

Windows XP puts the name of the person currently logged on to the system at the top of the start menu. The reason for this is to make it easier to say that the user is connected to a Windows XP system that is configured with multiple users. However, if you are the only person using the computer, you don't really need to have your name at the top of the menu start. You can remove it by using the Group Policy console (Microsoft Management Console snap-in used to edit Group Policy objects).

    1. Start the Group Policy console (Gpedit.msc).
    2. Go to User Configuration | Administrative templates | Start menu and taskbar.
    3. Find and double-click the setting remove the username from the Start Menu.
    4. Select the active option button, and then click OK.
    5. Exit the Group Policy console. The change will take place immediately.

Note: This tip only applies to Windows XP Professional.

  • Change the name of the computer to apply to folders - Vista

My computer was a friend, but when they gave it to me I tried to change the name of the computer to mine but that you are unable to apply to the user folders (I hope that makes sense!) - the user account name is Elise, but the address (?-equivalent of when you type a URL in a Web browser...) said again: C:\Users\kerry\Documents

Is it possible to apply the name change for the name 'Kerry' is replaced by 'Elise' in the address?

The only way to change this folder name is to go to the control panel to the title of the user accounts and create a new user account for the name you want.  Later, you can delete the old profile.

    1. If it is the domain controller, you cannot change the name of the computer by selecting network ID and this is normal.
    2. If it is a member of the computer in domain or workgroup, you don't have permission to change the name of the computer.

  • View the name of the computer on the Windows 7 Desktop

The computer name can be displayed on the desktop by changing the C:\Window\System32\en-us\user32.dll.mui to display the name of the computer instead of the build # using PaintDesktopVersion. It's for Windows 7 x 64. I found the instructions of this sub Vista. I tried this edition but the build version still shows.

  • I want to change the name of the computer in a Windows 7 box to be lowercase.

I'm loading software on to Dell 990 and I'm having a problem chhanging a computer name for the lowercase letters.  When I booted the machine originally I used capital letters in the name of the computer. Now I find that the instructions require that one tiny to join the domain and software respond correctly.  I need to change the name to lowercase. Is this possible without reloading the operating system?

Right-click on computer and select Properties.

Then select system settings advanced in the upper left corner of the window

    Select the computer name tab

    Select Edit.

Do you mean the name of a Windows of a remote computer logon account? There is more than one because Windows 7 allows multiple concurrent interactive sessions. In any case, this could point you in the right direction:

    PsExec \\NameOfPC cmd.exe / user: YourUserName
    PsLoggedOn
The first command will not work unless you have an account admin on the remote machine.
You can download the PS tools from here.

  • After you rename the computer, the backup of the file history still showing the old name of the computer to its destination.

Original title: history of Falie Worng Destination path

I changed my computer name [my computer setting and the name, display name, computer and computer Description all equal under the same name]. But when the history of files backing up my files, he insists on putting the OLD computer name in the backup destination path, for example:

    Backup_Drive\\Backup_Folder_A\UserID\Old_Computer_Name\Data...

I tried selecting a new backup drive and reboot several times, but the history of files always comes back to the old name of the computer when you create the destination path.

    How can I fix?

Similar to the response of Siva here, you will want to return to

    C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory

Now, if FileHistory was lit before, using the old username, there will be a configuration file and the Config1.xml and Config2.xml files will contain several tags using the old name of PC. Rather than wipe these files, open each file in Notepad and search for the name of your old PC and replace with the name of the new, do not forget to save.

In addition, if you want to keep a backup that has already been created with the old name of PC, you'll need to find, rename the main folder ("old name PC") and in this folder, rename tags in the Web configuration files (as you did in the local configuration files).

When I tried to delete my local config files, he would recreate using files of configuration of the backup, that were also incorrect, so I just manually renamed and mine works fine now under the new name of PC.
