NAS in esxi

Hello I have a server esxi 5.1, and I want to create a machine VM for Nas. The use of this nas solution is for home use.

This virtual machine will be disk virtual 1 TB of the local data store.

What configuration is recommended?

Thank you.

you have 2 options for the same thing.

1. create and openfiler vm and shared storage. Here is the link http://www.vmwarebits.com/content/install-and-configure-openfiler-esxi-shared-storage-nfs-and-iscsi

You can also

You can also use windows based openfile executable that create the data store and stock, so you can ride in your netwokr.

2. create a virtual machine join the data as a reader store in VM and share this disc in your network to get it as a shared for your network storage domestic.

  • NAS Server esxi local?

    Hi all

I'm kinda new to ESXi, even if I'm running a server with it for a little over a year now. I use a HP Proliant ML350 G6 with a P410i raid (on-board) controller. I'm running a VM Windows Server 2012 R2 I want to use as an IIS server, but also as a file server. For a starter, I had 2 1 TB sata discs I have work in raid 1 (for storage) and 2 300 GB scsi drives in raid 1 (for the OS). When I go into the VM options, I click on add a device and under hard drive I see raw device mapping, but it is grayed out.

I heard that it's a bad idea to use vmdk for storing files (discs virtal) because it may be corrupted on the 2 discs. I was wondering if there is a way to ungray raw device mapping and map of the Bay of Windows server VM 1 TB HARD drive? I heard I could buy a NAS box and plug it in, but I don't want to waste money if I can do this directly from the ESXi.

    Thank you very much!

    > because it may be corrupted on the 2 discs.

Who said this? Both disks are presented to the ESXi hosts as a single logical volume, and the RAID1 is maintained by the controller P410.

I see no reason why you should not create a VMFS data store and use a virtual drive for the file server. Don't forget to leave a free space on the disk on the data store if you want to use snapshots or change the settings of the virtual drive to "independent" persistent in order to exclude the virtual disk snapshots.

BTW. local disks and volumes are not supported in the ROW, so they are filtered by default.

  • Openfiler as NAS for ESXi shows the performance difference between software RAID6 and RAID10.

I had some performance issues with a new ESXi server with virtual machines hosted on a table of 6 software RAID (12 units of optical fiber). Here's what it looked like:

    12 multi-plate (RAID 6) -fiber channel- Openfiler.

    NFS - VMWare ESXi

Since I had a spare CF array I decided to fix to the Openfiler box and try to RAID 10 in software. Different performances has been staggering. I did a lot of steps, but I test the startup time of a computer virtual stored on each table of FreeBSD.

    RAID 6 59 seconds

    RAID 10 45 seconds

Now waiting for MBR of FreeBSD for 5 seconds and the boot loader expects 10, so there were at least 15 seconds of downtime in each case. The strange thing is that accessing directly the matrix RAID 6 via FTP provided good performance. I was able to saturate a 100Mbit link and the Openfiler Server showed almost no load. But with the VM on the RAID 6 array, the load on the Openfiler area would jump to 4 +. I hope it helps someone.

  • iSCSI Multipathing - each path does refer to a specific target IP address?

    Dear Experts,

I just set up a 6.0 ESXi host and a Synology NAS ds2015xs MPIO Multipathing. On the side of ESXi, I created two dedicated VMkernel with a physical NIC adapters each and every other network cards set to unused. I then added the adapters to the software iSCSI adapter in ESXi. On the side of SIN, I configured both interfaces in the same subnet as the VMkernel adapters. I then created a target which allows multiple iSCSI sessions, add LUNS and allowed access to the target for the IQN of the ESXi iSCSI Software adapter name.

Back on the side of ESXi, I added a static discovery entry manually adding addresses to IP of NAS devices and target IQN. After a new analysis of the storage, ESXi showed two paths to the interface of the SIN for which I entered the IP address as a static discovery entry:

    mpio-2paths.PNG

With this configuration, multiple paths does not--once to stop the interface on the NAS, ESXi don't miss not automatically during the second interface of the NAS. After you have added a second static discovery entry with specifying the same target, but the second IP address of the NAS, ESXi showed all four lanes - two at each interface on the NAS:

    mpio-4paths.PNG

With this configuration, Multipathing works as expected. If an interface on the NAS fails, ESXi will automatically use a path for the second interface.

In fact, it makes sense. At first, I was wondering about whether it is correct that I have to manually enter each interface of the target in order to obtain the corresponding paths to it. I first thought that I just need to enter an IP address of the target and that MPIO uses a kind of magic to automatically discover the paths to other interfaces available on the NAS. Later, I saw that this is the case when using dynamic discovery instead of static discovery. However, the same dynamic discovery adds all interfaces of the SIN as entries in static discovery. Once I have delete one of these entries in the list, the corresponding paths are also deleted.

So my correct understanding that always information path refers to the corresponding IP address of the target and that a way will stop working once the corresponding IP address is no longer available?

    Thank you

    Michael

When you configure access to storage, it is always important to follow the recommendations of the supplier. Not only to learn how the program setup the IP configuration, but also for the way political (e.g. Fixed, MRU, Round-Robin).

Regarding your question, many storage arrays are configured with the extra VIP (virtual IP address) or IP address of the group, which is then used to configure the target (or another) dynamic on the ESXi hosts. When an initiator connects to such a VIP or group IP, the target will respond with all of its associated IP addresses. If this isn't an option for your storage device, you must provide all the IPS target manually (as you did).

I have an an ESXi 5.1u2 Server ESXi on a usb key with a SSD for the cache.

  • How can I migrate an ESXi host since a vDS in a vSwitch with NAS storage on vDS

I need to move some on a vDS esxi hosts to a standard vSwitch to move a new vCenter ESXi hosts

I have two 10 GB network adapters that manage the ports VM, NAS storage and vmotion.

Is there a documented procedure to move a vDS in a vSwitch, particularly for migration from NAS storage to a vSwitch?

    Thank you

    Tom

No, you will need to do this on a per-host basis.

I really recommend doing one by one, not in a hurry and checking all the networking before you proceed to the next step. Example: after migrating the vmkernel interfaces, check on a ssh connection to the host if it can vmkping the NAS. Before you move all the virtual machines on the host to the switch std, move one and check if the VM networking continues to function. This will prevent errors and downtime.

  • ESXi 5, move to other hardware, data on NAS Server store

    Hi, I have an esxi host and virtual machines (including vcenter) are on a NAS which is a qnap. To change the esxi server, there is nothing to do with the qnap, he stayed there. I think the move will be simple, but I want just other opinions if I think I have to do is correct. Here it is;

    On the new server.

    -install esxi

-Configure the networking and other things std

-Configure virtual networks, even as I did in the old server esxi

Stop old esxi (this will stop all my virtual machines)

    New boot esxi Server

connect the data store on the qnap

    start the virtual machines

    set options for start/stop

    Am I missing something?

    Thank you

    Hello

You are on the right track.

    A. install the new esxi

    B mount the NAS box

    C. configure the network

D ensure that you are able to access the data store that has VM

    E. If everything looks good, stop the virtual machine, remove ESXi inventory (old)

    F. browse the data store for a machine virtual and do a right-click on the VMX file and add to the inventory on the new esxi host. Power of the virtual machine.  Follow this for all other virtual machines

    G. once all virtual machines are migrated, shut down the old ESX host and remove the network.

    Cheers :-)

  • Access NAS storage of ESXi Server using VMKernel Port?

    Hello

I would like to know the best procedure to connect to the NAS storage of ESXi host 5. I am able to connect to the NAS storage according to the screenshots listed in the link below.

    http://www.tintri.com/blog/2011/11/connecting-vSphere-to-NFS-the-easy-way/

But, I saw different configurations in the past where port dedicated VMkernel is assigned to NAS and all storage goes into network 10 G. I try to do the same and created a VMkernel for NAS port. But I don't think that traffic is going over there as it is not used at all.

I gave the IP address of the ESXi server on the NAS box to get access. I couldn't give address IP VMkernel sideways NAS. How can I make use of this IP VMKernel dedicated NFS storage?

I want to implement the best way to pass NAS 10 G network traffic. In addition, How can I test if storage traffic crosses VMkernel port?

    Suggestions needed.

Virtualinfra is right that you must use a different subnet for NFS traffic. You masked the IP range, so I don't see what you use, but make sure that the vmkernel and storage using a single subnet, not the management subnet. If you get an error, your use of a subnet that goes out the default gateway of the management port, or that you are using the same subnet.

I wrote a few articles on the use of NFS with vSphere: http://wahlnetwork.com/2012/04/19/nfs-on-vsphere-a-few-misconceptions/

Also, make sure that the vmnic can route traffic on that subnet, as in the case of the use of VLANs.

  • ESXi 5.0 and NAS Iomega ix2-200

    Hi guys,.

We are seriosly thought about the posibility to define ESXI - Hypervisor - with Iomega ix2-200 NAS. We were check the official documentation for Iomega. I checked that ix2-200 is supported for ESXI 4.0, but we are not sure if pressed for ESX 5.0.
Someone knows this product is compatible with VMware? I have not found any associated IX2-200 and Esxi 5.0
    Thanks in advance,

If it is not on the HCL, this is not supported.

However, it works very well (I run it every day).  This is not supported because most suppliers are not going in the effort to verify support for N - 2 equipment.

If the support is important to you, why not pick up a px4/px6 supported?

  • Advice on appropriate hosts of ESXi and NAS network configuration

I am looking for tips or best practices on the implementation of my ESXi 4.0 hosts with my NAS... Here is some basic information:

-Certified VMware AberNAS with matrix RAID 5 SAS (2 x Gig NIC) drives

-2 x HP Proliant welcomes each with 6-8 Gig NIC

Currently, NAS NIC are associated to balance the load connected to two different switches.  HP hosts are also associated to balance the load connected to 2 different switches.

Here is a glance at the basic configuration in vcenter:

    vmnetwork.JPG

Because I have a lot of NETWORK interface card on the server (4 used... but 8 in total), I would like to configure this to improve performance.  So my questions:

1 can I create a new vswitch sin and dedicate the traffic between the hosts and NAS?  How?  Place them on a physical switch dedicated between the hosts, NAS and LAN?

    2. create a dedicated NIC for VM vmotion of hosts?

    3. any other configuration benefiting NFS and VMware?

Am open to any idea. Thank you

-There are currently of 2 guests (am licensed for 3 and can install later). In addition, I have 2 physical switches gigabit dedicated to SAR/VM host nic and are resources shared LAN... so when the facility management/vmotion Teddy bear design, do I imitate the same configuration on the two hosts?  Do stay even these teddy bears, connected to one of the switches of concert?

Yes you would duplicate the installation on both hosts-

-With a device SIN the NIC on the NAS is associated with unique IP address and is dedicated to the virtual machine infrastructure.  Then I'd have 2 bears from each host AND the 2 bears from the NAS connected to the dedicated physical switch isoltaed and ip static'd just like different subnet?

Yes - as I said with a single IP address on a NAS for the natachasery on the hosts would be in a configuration of active / standby - it is more about the fact that ESXi does not really load balancing between the two network cards but selects a teddy bear based on the source and destination IP addresses - so if any of these changes the traffic's not on a unique Teddy

  • Connect NAS LAN device via ESXi host

    Hi all

I am currently fighting to get my NAS device attached to my LAN. I drew my network physical configuration below. Currently, the NAS is directly connected to the second NETWORK card in my server ESXi host. The first NETWORK card is the host is connected to the router, which is attached to the rest of my network and NATs to the Internet.

My design of virtual network looks like this right now.

If I add the second NETWORK card to port VM group, the NAS is visible to the virtual machines; However he cannot understand how to access the outside via the map of others. And the NAS is not visible from the attached LAN devices. Of course the two vm gw is set to 192.168.2.1

Basically I want the SIN to be on the same subnet as the all other devices on my LAN. Of course I could put in a physical switch between my router and the host of the virtual machine, but is it not possible to somehow the second NIC in the host 'transparent' or is he bridge on the first?

    Thanks in advance,

    Johan

    johanot wrote:

But is not possible to software-ize/virtualize this behavior?

It wouldn't be done by ESX (i).  You must have the bridge of the guest OS network cards.  Or you change the subnet of the second NETWORK card and configure routing in your guest OS.  Possible, but sounds like more complexity than really necessary.

... I mean... Physically, your suggestion means I have to buy an additional switch to put in front of my host.

Unless you 'need' to a switch, a gigabit unmanaged switch is not so expensive and has no configuration.  (And if you need a bunch of ports, I had a switch to unmanaged gigabit 16 port d-Link for under $ 200 at Office Depot).  The "no configuration" section is worth the expense in my humble OPINION.

  • ESXi NAS perfomance

    Hello

I have ESXi installed on a Dell Optiflex 745 T6600 Core 2 (2.40 GHz) and it works fine. I use the regular HD came with the workstation so I can run 2 Windows XP machines with no problem even if I see that the bottleneck to the system's disk access, without having to invest too much that I want to improve that so I have two options and I need your help to understand what would be best.

    1. buy a RAID controller and launch a RAID on the workstation

2 buy a NAS (one of the home or small business ones qNAP NAS iSCSI) and run RAID on two HD

Which of the above options give the best performance? Are there other options (cheap) I don't know?

    donnib

Do not go with the NAS - you will not be disappointed.

The cheapest, fastest and best bang for buck is an old box running Centos, and RAID software iSCSI target tools. If you can not handle the command line with FreeNAS or Openfiler (both are unnecessary layers of complexity according to me)

I have 4 x 1 TB RAID 10 (software) pulling 100 MB/s shared by two boxes of esxi. You get not much less than that and the performance and reliability is hard to beat.

  • Start from NAS that contains VMDK (NFS, NAS, ESXi 4.0)

I have little or no experience with ESXi or VMWare, and I would like to know how to get to this NAS that contains these VMDK that were sent as part of a dispute.
