NEC VM / VMDK to keep together DTS cluster

Hello

for virtual machines with storage/vDisks > 1 TB override us the policy 'VMDK to keep together' with 'no '. This is usually done in deployment or expansion of a machine virtual. For some reason any these substitutions are sometimes lost (there are Ko on this http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2053792Storage DRS maintains all VMDK and allocates no optimal data store, but AFAICS person no longer here the customer c# for theses parameters).

I'm tired of setting theses substitutions never a week yet. So I want to create a powercli script that checks for virtual machines with 1 to > vDISKs (disk space used for all vDisks) and create a rule of precedence VM. I find nothing how to set it with powercli, someone has an idea or a quick example?

THX!

Something like that then?

  • Issue of SDRS to vCloud Director after you add the new data store to the Cluster of DTS

    Hi people,

We use vCloud Director 5.5 in a vSphere full 5.5 environment.

We have several DTS Cluster in vSphere and connected to vCloud Director.

    Following problem.

When I add a data store to a Cluster of DTS and connect this to the corresponding storage profile data store, the storage profile is not available to vCloud Director more.

After removing the new store data in the cluster of DTS, the profile becomes available again.

    Any ideas?

    Concerning

    Jean

How did you the storage profile associated with the data store?  via c# client or vSphere web client?

If you did the wrong way (c#) there no storage class label appropriate against it.

A data cluster store has the storage class who would have all preparations of data contained inside.

I think that you should check the service class is associated properly in vSphere web client (before adding to the DS Cluster).  Once it displays correctly, and then add the data store to the cluster.

  • Keep the host resource pools after leaving a cluster

I thought is was impossible to keep existing or cluster transplant pools of resources on the host which prefabricated a cluster.

However, vSphere resources management Guide of reading I found an interesting note:

Make sure that you remove the cluster host by placing first in maintenance mode. If you
instead disconnect the host before you delete the cluster, the host keeps the pool resource that
reflects the hierarchy of the cluster.

It looked like something, so I tried it but no luck, the host had no pool after removed offline.

Now I'm confused of what this phrase actually means.

What do you see when you connect with vSphere client directly?

Usually, I see ONLY the list of the running virtual machine resources... not all resource pool.

Without virtual machines so I think that all the resource pools are removed.

Try to disconnect with some VM running (also false VMs).

  • Problem VMDK file large cluster in a box

So I've been running a flavor of vmware server 2.x since its release with little or no problems. Not that it matters but my host server is a Dell Poweredge 1900 with 32 GB of RAM, running windows server 2003 x 64.  I have also 2 Windows VM that I run as a cluster in a box, and they worked very well in this way for more than 3-4 years at the time of vmware 1.x. Both virtual machines have been set up exactly as such:

    SCSI 0:0 16GB & lt; - c drive

    1:0 500 MB & lt; - quorum SCSI cluster

SCSI 1:1 12GB & lt; - the app cluster disk

1:2 950 GB SCSI & lt; - storage of cluster disk

    SCSI 1:3) 12 GB & lt;-the sql cluster disk

1:4 250 GB & lt; - disk SCSI storage of additional cluster

What I did recently to set up a new file 2 TB since vmware server 2.x vmdk will now allow you to make files vmdk bigger than the old limit of 950 GB. This new 2 TB file was supposed to replace my 2 readers of old SCSI 1:2 and 1:4 SCSI cluster storage. After making the swap and copy all data to a vmdk file again, I noticed a problem at any moment I'm going to and move the resource cluster VMDK new 2 TB to the other server. Basically the two servers stop responding and it seems that vmware server choke on the 2 TB for some reason vmdk file any. Here's what I see in my logs any time that this happens.

Has anyone ever ran across this or has anyone ever used a file vmdk of this size as a cluster resource? As I said before that I had 0 problems with my cluster before I added this new 2 TB vmdk file...

I'm not at all surprised that you get this problems.

    You use monolithicSparse vmdk type!

For cluster in a box, I highly recommend flat VMDK.

I wonder that it worked for you all with the drive more sharing

  • VM performance - same vmdk or separated by volume

I'll be a Windows 2008 r2 installation on one of my servers for vSphere models.  The material has 2 quad core 3 ghz proc, 48 GB ram, Direct attached stoarge @ 1.6 TB of disk space efficient in RAID 10 with 15 k disks.

Is there a performance difference between having a partition C: and D: in the same VMDK or have the C: and D: as separate VMDK files?

Reason to keep together: less space.  This will save space as the OS and app share the same disk space.

Reason to keep apart: performance and ability to reconstruct an image of the VMDK data without the VMDK system.  Performance point of view if the data is separate and your requirements of performance for the data drive change you could move the data to a different LUN VMDK (faster) and let the system drive on its course LUN.

  • Change the Cluster size in drive with VM-converter

    All the morning

We'll probably replace our storage environment with that provided by a new provider.

Our current provider has a recommended 4 k Cluster size. So all our VMDK is configured with a cluster of 4K, size happy days.

However, the new seller we recommend 8 k.

So I thought v2v ING our server domain to the new platform, change the size of the block in the Advanced tab of VM-converter in the process, which gives us the system formatted with 8 K blocks.

There is however a Requirement MS that the system drive is 4 k (otherwise it wont power on). Its this little pesky 100 MB partition...

    Now comes the rub;

The 100 MB system partition, part of the first drive (C:\). If I P2V the first drive with a cluster of 8 k size I of course get a non bootable server.

When in fact I want actually to v2v 1 drive (C:\). As 8 KB, but leave the small single 100 MB system partition with the default of 4 k, however because they are part of the same disc, and converter seems to work at a disk level and not the level of the Partition, converter just wants to make all that is a problem.

Any ideas on how to accomplish the foregoing.

    See you soon

    Hi there mate

Sorry for the delay, we are testing at the mo and I could not devote much time to this.

Any ways I cracked it, I was testing on a 2 k 3 box where something like minitool would be necessary to finish the change of cluster size in the C:\ for the reasons given.

But when v2v - ing (with VM converter) a k box 8 or 2012 2 the system partition is presented to the converter as an independent drive and can therefore remain @ 4 k while the C:\ D:\ etc. can be adjusted as required using the advanced settings.

So in the end, you have a system with drives using the required cluster size and a system bootable...

just for future reference should it be useful to anybody.

  • Commissioning in a storage DRS cluster?

It seems that all the predefined workflow and action scriptlets for VM provisioning requires a specific available data store in.

Someone at - it an example of flow which provisions in a cluster of DTS? Can it be part of a virtual Spec computer object, or the API still requires a data store named ultimately?

    Hi schistad.

in this post, there's a script that unfolds in a pod of a cluster of SDR storage:

Re: CloneVm DTS cluster / storage Pod

You do not have to provide a data store, but you must provide a cluster of DTS (aka pod).

  • migrate to esxi free host in the cluster paid with minimal downtime

Please excuse my ignorance, I am very new to VMware and I am familiar with the concepts of other virtualization software, I used, but not some of the termininology, and maybe that's why my research are not turning to the top of what I need.

We had been using the free esxi hypervisor based to host some server hosts.  These servers are running a copy of our database and are used for reporting applications.  They are also setup with files VMDK provisioned very large and thick (> 300 GB!).  They were spread great for a year now.  However, we just bought the VMWare "vSphere 4 Essentials Plus" kit for the creation of a cluster of 3 machine, with a few redunancy and other features we wanted.  We also have a new san to go with it.  We are very pleased with the product and move to her!

On the other invited VM running on this host, (and several other hosts, its amazing to see how they arise) I stop the virtual machine and the vCenter Converter allows you to migrate the virtual computer to the new cluster.  At the same time, I would like to convert it to the thickness of a provisioning. However, because these clients have very, very big thickness provisioned HD, its research as they would take five hours or more to migrate. (other VM moved to essentially 1 GB/min)  These report servers can go without updates the master DB for several hours, but servers should always be available. I can't have them down for 5 hours. There are a lot of historical reports are refreshed by the end users.

Is it possible for me to do what follows somehow? I can't understand:

    • disable the DB update
    • closing comments, take a quick snapshot and then launch the guest.
    • While his copy running (and not updated) main and VMDK files file to the cluster (therefore only changes to files in the snapshot file)
    • on the new cluster, once copied (or during the copy) convert the VMDK to a thin provisioned (given that only about 85 GB of data is used in fact to this topic).
    • Finally, bring up new comments on the cluster at the same time I get comments on the old host (and ignore the changes that have taken place on the snapshot file, since its mainly a readonly report server)? and re - activate the DB update.

For end users who would be about 5 minutes total of downtime (basically, two reboots) which would be much easier to deal with than the 5 hours (each!) of how we are past other virtual machines would.

If the stand-alone host has the same type of CPU and family, you will be able to add it to the cluster otherwise just add to vCenter. You will always have access to other features.

I have to face with unpleasant question. I tried to clean my keyboard and unfortunately, some of the buttons after disassembly will not 'stick' again. Under the buttons plastic ties seem to be loose and he won't keep together more.

    So here's my question:

Can I replace the keyboard for the new - myself and Do NOT LOSE THE WARRANTY at the same time? Or it must be done in the service of HP? And the second thing, I was wondering if anyone of you could maybe explain in some detail how to handle myself?

Yes. Good news. Replacement of the keyboard is permitted to end users and is pretty easy to do. See page 45 of the manual here:

  • Until I found this thread, I lost 16 months in the Inbox during compacting emails, I went to the trash can and hit restore all, but I can't find them

As I close outlook wxpress yesterday, I got the prompt for compaction. It's been awhile, so I let it start and stop later the computer without checking anything. Today, when I went to check my messages, everthting from 2012 until yesterday was gone. I went in the trash and saw that he was responsible. I have selected to restore a prompt came and I hit restore all. I return wwent into my Inbox and found nothing changed. I searched the web and found this thread and read something about 'with OE not open' and stuff on .bak and .dbx, and fear that I might have screwed up. Where can I find these messages?

You need more than a single click to restore. Here's my answer "keeps" together with the instructions. The party concerned is in blue, but please read all this.

Two reasons the most common for what you describe is disruption of the compacting process, (never touch anything until it's finished), or bloated folders. More about that below.

Why OE insists on compacting folders when I close it? :
    http://www.insideoe.com/FAQs/why.htm#compact

    Recovery methods:

If you are running XP/SP3, then you should have a backup of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin (or possibly the message store), copied as bak files.

To restore a folder bak on the message store folder, first find the location of the message store.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

In Windows XP, the .dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in the Solution Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder options | View.

Note: If you have new messages in the folder you are go restore, move them to a folder first created user, or they will be lost. They can be moved once the old posts have been restored.

Close OE and in Windows Explorer, click on the dbx to the file missing or empty file, then drag it to the desktop. It can be deleted later once you have successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the message store.

Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the * exact * same name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. For example: If the file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named saved. Open the new folder, and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty, continue to the next step.

First of all, check if there is a bak file already in the message. If there is, and you have removed the dbx file, go ahead and rename it in dbx.

If it is not already in the message, open the trash and do a right-click on the file bak for the folder in question and click on restore. Open the message store up and replace the .bak by .dbx file extension. Close the message store and open OE. Messages must be in the folder.

If messages are restored successfully, you can go ahead and delete the old dbx file that you moved to the desktop.

If you have not then bak copies of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin:

DBXpress run in extract disc Mode is the best chance to recover messages:
    http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/default.aspx

A general warning to help avoid this in the future:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They finally are damaged. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.

Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages. Your up-to-date A / V program will continue to protect you sufficiently.

  • Help - cannot work on the reading lists and am COMPLETE novice.

The first thing I would say - because really I read posts where people meet on this subject - I spent HOURS searching through these posts, try to understand my problem. I'm NOT lazy - it's just that you all speak a language I don't understand!

I'm trying to set up a playlist of various songs - but whenever I do--the player distributes the songs their various albums and do not keep together. I tried with Windows Media Player and Winamp. I read a post where someone had a similar problem and one solution is to use MTP rather than MSC (not sure if I have the letters on the right).

I discovered that this is under settings in the player.

But can someone please explain to me - in conditions really very simple - what is the difference? Some people seem to think THAT DPW is not good - but why? (Once again in terms very very basic please.)

In addition, how change my reader to DPW help the situation of the playlist?

I'm also confused because when I plug my player to the computer - propose a list of music files. But these don't seem to be the same folders/files that are the reader - I don't even see the "Playlist" option on the computer - even if it is indeed on the player to the title of the music.

Help, please! This is my only problem with the drive so far and I spent hours trying to get out!

    Thank you

    Sarah

Selections - me - MTP always seemed easier.  MTP mode the computer sees the device as a multimedia device, MSC he sees it as a regular flash drive.

Once you have set up a playlist, you can change it by double clicking on it and it will show you the list of titles.  You can change the order and drag and drop files more within your rocket into the playlist.  Windows media player and media monkey etc lets you create playlists within the program if you wish.

Playlists are separated for the menus of the artist and albums.  While labels written in the files are used to identify artist and album (unless you use the navigation in the files), file selection just heading the reader files (which can all be at different locations). So no, your files will still be under album/artist as well as the playlist.

    Hey Jonh,

Yes, you can use all the additional DIMM on the B230 M2 except for the 32 GB one. (see the screenshots and compare the DIMM PIDS).

Don't forget that these come as a couple and you want to keep together the pair of you.  When you install the modules DIMM make you follow the directions of dimm population found on the data sheet below.
