New Compellent

I add a new HDS to my existing VMware environment, connected to an EMC Bay.  Can I zone to the compellent to existing HBA adapters used for EMC?

You can use the same HBA just need to ensure that the ports on the HBA is zoned on correctly so the EMC has its own area and ports, and the HDS has its own area and ports.

  • SanLink2 and Dell Compellent SAN?

    Hello world

I'm currently developing a sharing of the AFP on a Mac Mini with our Dell's Compellent SAN fibre channel storage.

I have a late 2014 Mac Mini connected through love at first sight for a SanLink2 adapter CF 16 G.  The adapter has two HBA that is connected to our Cisco MDS 9148 fibre channel fabric switches.  The WWPN of the HBA on the adapter have been the subject of a zoning on the fabric buttons, and we cannot FCPING SAN HBA successfully.

However, we have 2 TB of storage of our Compellent SAN to Dell for the mac mini, and I can't get the mac mini to see volume (do not see it in disk utility and can not see all the new drives in / dev).  I have a support case to open with promise, but he was curious to know if the community had seen.

I tried fell different cable, different fibers and several reboots.  In my research on Google, I've learned a fun terminal command under OS X: fibreconfig-l [it's a lowercase L].  When I run this command, all I get is the following:

    terminalprompt # fibreconfig-l

    Controllers of

    Targets

    NodeWWN 23:00:00:01:55:5 B: 29:08

    NodeWWN 23:00:00:01:55:5 B: 29:08

In my monitor OS X system, under the section of Fibre Channel, I get a little more information, but I'm under the impression that I should see (s) Lun in there and I'm not.  Here's what I see:

    Seller: promise

    Product: SANLINK 2

    Description: Port 1

    Speed: 4 Gigabit ports

I can provide more information if necessary.  Thanks in advance if anyone has any ideas!

    Hello

I know some FC HBA require that either a device mapped to LUN 0. For these HBAS if there is no mapped to LUNS 0 none of the storage will be recognized by the client. It has been my experience that whatever it is based on the older chipset of the LSI FC has this problem. The original SanLink FC HBA has no need of any drivers that was also the case for Apple brand LSI FC HBA OSX - thus could perhaps use the some of the previous control logic? Additionally, make sure that you are properly set up as point to point or FC - AL topology in the SANLink 2 configuration utility - this should match what is your San.

    Try this:

    1) map to the storage presented to the Mac with 2 SanLink to LUN 0

    (2) check the topology setting (try it was taking off from point to point auto and try first)

    (3) check if there is of"security groups" on storage that there ID WWN of the SANLink2 registered

    (4) make sure that the storage and the Mac are zoned properly on the FC switch (could be WWN zoning or rezoning of port, in both cases, it must be set up correctly).

    I hope this helps!

  • Coerce (red dot) is faster to convert and the force of new Type

The following excerpt shows that a red wired dot force is several times faster than the conversion of the data type. This is not too surprising, just because I heard that this is the case, but I would like to know what the red - dot under the hood that makes it much faster, still 'wrong' (sort of).

Going further, I wanted to see if compel him to new Type would be as fast as a red dot coerce. Turns, it's about as slow as Convert.

Can you explain or join a discussion about this? Am I wasting time and conversion nodes?

It is not the case. Since you have enabled debugging, additional code is probably generated to prrobe loops during execution.

If you disable debugging, all times are 0 or 1 ms.

  • Recovery of free space Compellent

Hi guys, I installed a new Dell SCv2020 Compellent storage with vSphere U3b 5.5 for an existing customer

I have a deep knowledge of Dell PowerVault storage, but I'm new with Dell Compellent. I read that the snapshots for backups or running Storage vMotion can affect free space on the end due to the native LUN provisioning storage: communities.vmware.com/.../436628; TSTART = 0

The suggestion is run or plan the command "esxcli storage vmfs unmap-l MyDatastore" which calls the primitive SCSI UNMAP manually

I tested a Storage vMotion and indeed space on the source LUN are assigned until this only manually 'no '. I have not yet tested how instant backup affect free space on the storage because I've not yet migrated any VM on the new infrastructure (by the way I use v8 of Veeam Backup who insist a lot about VMware snapshots)

Anyone here can share ideas and comments? Thanks a lot guys

    Marco

You are on point, use the tool unmap to reclaim space on the LUN. Compellent thin provisions at the end back and depending on your environment, you should probably be thin provisioning your LUN on the end of VMware. To the wire when you remove VMware servers and vmotion of data store to data store space, will not be recovered on Compellent b/c, that storage is ignorant because data are only is more used. The "fix" for what there is complete integration between VMware and Dell is to run that unmap tool.

What started doing every quarter or so is to run the tool unmap on all LUNS that are thin and put into service (in our environment all volumes). I tested unmap several times and I had no problems with running the tool while the servers are running on this volume. I would say that the tool running on a server that does not have a lot of load work because the CPU spike during unmap (datastore readings will boost as well).

Regarding backups and snapshots, I have no problems with the space about those. Replays freeze blocks of reference data, but once this review has expired the space is recovered. Regarding backups depends on what you use for backups - we use CommVault who will take a glance of the LUN, copy the data off power then release the tension (so for a short period of time, he didn't there ate during the backup space, but it takes a few minutes to copy the data).

  • The Compellent Dell 6.4.5 to 6.5 upgrade

    Hi guys,.

I am very new to the Compellent way of doing things and I was in charge of the upgrade of the current configuration to 6.5

'Making Dell Compellent OS storage of version 6.4.5 to 6.5.20 level'

The webclient service I checked updates and it is said that there is not? (see attached screenshot)

Any ideas? Apologies, I'm new on the way of Dell to do things, so I'm learning on the fly. The environemet is all together to the top and using CF

    4 controllers 2 active and 2 backup

You must call assistance (co-pilot) and ask them to do a health check. Then they announced the update for you and when you think check again, it will be displayed. One time the update are done, ask them to make an another checkup. Since this is your first time, I would ask them to stay on the phone with you just so they can inform you about everything that happens through their secure console session.

Even when updates are not service to perform, I intend after hours.

    Good luck.

  • Some clarification on the prioritization of the Compellent storage

We is the migration of our shared since an old attached FC SAN to an iSCSI based compellent vSphere storage.  I had built a few LUNS to test, and now I want to start fast vMotioning VMware more guests to the existing LUN compellent.  When I made my first move, I had requested a profile of storage of low priority (level 3) to the LUN and then replaced by the storage profile recommended after that vMotion operation was complete.  Now I want to vMotion more VMs in the lun Compellent existing comments without the risk of saturating my SSD.  If I select Select the option 'Import data to the lowest tier of storage' in the advanced properties of the volume Compellent in System Manager, then invites him to the volume/LUN vMotion, writing will be limited to level 3?  Or is the 'import data at the lowest storage layer"only really applicable to import operations by an external device that is configured in the System Manager?

This is my first Compellent installation so I'm learning the environment of the earth upward.

If you activate the checkbox "Import data at the level low", all the data will be ingested at the lowest level possible. So if you have levels 1, 2 and 3 and RAID 10, and RAID 5 on each layer, your new information will be ingested to Tier 3 RAID 5. Once you clear the option, new data will be ingested at your highest level (Tier 1 RAID 10 if it is not full). And if you have the opportunity to fast track under license, then he's going to RAID 10 fast first, then Standard RAID 10.

  • Compellent training

I was considering taking the class Compellent 4 days of Administration and advanced management training.

Everyone took and it is worth $ 5000?

We have recently installed a Compellent SAN in a primary/DR configuration and I am a newbie.

    Thank you

I took the class of Directors 4 days leave and found it very useful.  I have over 15 years of experience of SAN, so I went with a sober opinion regarding the quality of the class.  I was very impressed by the instructor and hands on opportunity HW being new HDS in time.  I should mention that I went to one of these sites from Dell which added to the experience.  In the other Dell training I took I did not always have hands with the DJ, but they always provided hands on Labs on the associated SW.   A benefit to taking the class and become certified you will be able to make your own installs and HW upgrades as long as you keep you certified installation status. (Requires an annual update for a cost of several hundred dollars online).

  • Compellent Replay Manager and VSS

    Hi all

I am a new user of Replay Manager and I'm testing inside and sandbox environment.

I installed Replay Manager Services 7.0 on a physical Windows 2003 R2 x 64 server and tried to program in accordance with replays of the management tools Manager Replay--> all work perfectly.

But this server is also supported by our company backup tool: Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3. I noticed that whenever a VSS backup is initiated by BackupExec, a coherent reading is done on the HDS. Is this normal? Can disable us this behavior?

    Thanks in advance,

    Kind regards.

    Teo.

    Finally, I found the solution:

Symantec Backup Exec Agent installed on windows system has a default setting to choose the right provider VSS: this parameter is 'automatic selection '.

With this automatic selection, the agent chooses the VSS provider Replay Compellent, instead of the microsoft VSS provider service. And so, the backup exec task triggers a replay on the Compellent storage system!

Solution: change the task parameter to force 'Microsoft's VSS provider' instead of 'automatic selection '.

  • Sublevels in the Compellent

Looking at my "Storage Types", I see that my two sub-levels in Tier3 is soon running out of disk space.

My "Raid 6, Fast" and "Raid 6, standard" will soon run out.

My question is, will the HDS, the use of disk space allocated to the sublevels of Raid 10 in the same pane rather?
Or to the compellent system will automatically assign blocks more than necessary? (I have a lot of space unallocated for the moment)

Or how does get around that?

RAID-6, Fast"will be always full and data will be pushed in and out of this title 'reserved' during the Progression of data.

If it is not allocated disk space in this layer then the system will add more space for the Standard pool as needed. The R10 and R5/6 pools expand and contract automatically based on the use of the San.  If you need a lot of space quickly in a specific component (like design injesting a new level 3 file server and then leave a new written hit level 1 then progress down) you can contact Copilot and they can help to manually expand or contractors RAID pools.

In general, you can always contact the Copilot Support to discuss these things, and they can give you a health assessments of the striping of RAID and the capabilities of the pool. They are more than just failure solutions!

  • Migrate from hp msa2000 to compellent dell

    Hi experts,

Can someone let me know how to migrate HP msa2000 to compellent dell?

There are several options, but depending on the application, this may or may not require downtime.

    A few examples:

-If you use VMware and have a level of license with storage vMotion, the easiest option is to use cela hot-move the virtual machines of the msa to the new volumes Compellent

    Hyper-V offers similar options

-If you use storage for Exchange, you can just submit the new (HDS) storage to the server and have Exchange to move the mailboxes (on the fly)

If you can afford the downtime, or there is no way with your application/operating system to migrate the data from the side host, HDS can attach to your msa and extract the data (assuming that it is a protocol that they share (FC, iSCSI, SAS)). This article contains an example of how this person did migrate a HP EVA at their HDS:

  • Upgrade to Windows 8 Pro's PC OEM of Windows 8 (new installation)

I recently bought a new PC (Sony Vaio SVL241290X, Dec 2012) with Windows 8 is installed.  I then bought a Windows 8 Pro Upgrade license.  I would like to install Windows 8 Pro as a clean install in order to reformat my hard drive and also remove pre-installed software (my PC came with 2 partitions recovery and a lot of software VAIO...).  Windows 8 Windows 8 Pro upgrade is possible, but does not allow me to do what I want, as indicated in the previous sentence.

When I bought my Win 8 Pro license I created an iso, which I then burned on a DVD.  After spending some time to find how simply boot from the drive (had to change MODE of BOOT UEFI to LEGACY in the BIOS, that I can enter only with the key Sony 'Help'...), I was finally able to start installing Windows 8 Pro disc.

After the start of the DVD, I reached the configuration of Windows 8 screen where I accepted the default settings (language, time, keyboard) and click "next".  I then clicked on "install now".  After a brief loading time, I get a message stating: "the product key entered don't match any available to install Windows images. Enter a different product key.  The provided only option is to click on 'OK', what I do, which returns just the on-screen 'Install now', that will make a loop back me the product key message if I click it.
Of some Internet research, I discovered that Windows 8 keys are now included in the BIOS, this is why I am never have the opportunity to enter my new Pro license (is this correct Microsoft?).
    Can you help me?
    Things I've tried:
    1. I upgraded to Windows 8 Windows 8 Pro (in order to "update the BIOS/firmware key"...) and then returned a clean install.  It not worked as I always get the product key message.
Things I don't want or think I should be compelled to make:
    1. install Windows 7 from the disc and then upgrade to Windows 8 Pro and remove the windows.old folder.
    Thank you.

    Hello

I never tried the upgrade in the way you describe... which I figured just enabled the features already on your machine, but wasn't sure.

I don't think that reinstall Win 7 and the upgrade work is the nature of your upgrade method. It seems to need to win 8, not 7.

From what I can tell, the only way for you to do the clean install would be with the real upgrade of the other versions.  The $40 or $70 a, depending on download or retail sales.

If you are interested, I've seen a number of online stores sell upgrade Windows 8 Pro (retail) for $30 - $40 after rebate (NewEGG) and in one case $40 outright (MicroCenter). That doesn't seem right, but it seems to be like that.

Thank you, but $40 upgrade option is one I bought (via http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/buy?ocid=GA8_O_WOL_SM_AppsOffer_FPP_Null) and I got with it.
That's what I ended up having to do:
    1. perform a clean install of Windows 7 on my OEM Windows 8.  I installed by booting from a Windows 7 disc that allowed me to reformat the hard disk (and remove all partitions in the process).
    2. after installation of Windows 7 (not active) on a completely wiped hard drive, tried to boot from my disk Windows 8 Pro (bought from link above) to see if I could now preform a clean install.  Surprisingly, it did not work, I got the same message that I received before ("the entered product key does not match... (', see my first post).  This leads me to believe that my key OEM Windows 8 original (not pro) is indeed stored in the BIOS/firmware somewhere...
    3. given that start from my Windows 8 Pro disc does not work, I did the upgrade to Pro 8 for Windows 7.  I chose to 'Keep nothing', but still finished with a folder Windows.old (about 10 GB), I simply deleted.
In the end, I got what I wanted: an installation of Windows 8 Pro without any software preinstalled or wasted scores OEM/manufacturer.
This isn't the way I think it should have been done, but I think it's the way Microsoft is forced to make.
