  You shouldn't have any problem starting Firefox in Mode safe mode if the problem is really due to an extension. Take a look at this support article to start Firefox in Mode safe or to detect bad extension.

  I use macbook pro mid 2012 model (OS X 10.11.6).) Spent 2 days since my Safari (version 9.1.2) is oddly opens a new tab with a few ads on each click.

  I tried to install Adware extension to block ads. It keeps loading up a few ads, however still open the tabs. I don't see other extensions (apart from the extension of the Adware that I installed) in the Safari preferences window.

  Some of these new tabs are mackeeper and similar stuff, warning me that I have some serious virus on my system.

  Its very difficult for me to work on my mac.

  The pref browser.newtab.url is no longer supported in Firefox (41 +), so it is no longer possible to put the new tab through this preference page.

I use FF because I don't want to be forced to use my browser as I want it to work.   (1) some software utility/security/life private changes the folder of Firefox settings between sessions. If you have any software with a similar feature, disable it until everything is set as you want and stable.

  (2) you might check all the extensions that could possibly change the settings when you start Firefox. You can do this on the page modules. Either:

  • CTRL + SHIFT + a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or tools) > Add-ons

  In the left column, click Extensions. Then, take a critical look on the list on the right side. On a new installation, it is usually empty, unless Firefox has detected the extensions that already exist on your system. Something unexpected?

  Changing the value of the string that I mentioned in my previous post, will change the page that appears in your new tab. The default value is about:newtab , but it can be changed to anything you want.

  To change the page to the new tab, follow these steps:

  If you find that it works in your session (Cmd + n and give you good home page), but after leaving Firefox and commissioning once again you have bad home page, look for an optional settings file named user.js in your profile (personal settings folder) folder. Firefox uses the settings in this file at startup to override your preferences since the previous session.   Display Google in a new tab page requires a different approach. From Firefox 41, the browser.newtab.url parameter is no longer used because it was constantly attacked by malware. Now, you need an add-on to change the new tab page.

  Here are a few options (I'm learning more all the time):

  • If you are already using the "Restorer of classic theme" or "Tab Mix Plus" extension: There is an option somewhere (!) in his dialogues of the parameters to select another page in the new tab.

  In the left column, click Extensions. Then on the side right, find the new tab replace or custom new tab and click on the Options button. (See first screenshot attached).

  Depending on the size of your screen, you may need to scroll down to enter the address in the form. (See second screenshot attached). For example:

  • (Default) page thumbnails = > subject: newtab
  • Blank tab = > subject: empty
  • Built-in Firefox homepage = > topic: welcome
  • Any other page = > full URL of the page

  Then tab or click this form field and you can test using Ctrl + t.

  Custom new tab

  It is easy to enter your favourite homepage address. If you check either of the boxes, the expansion will set the focus in the page as well, for example, the cursor will be in the Google search box. (See third screenshot attached). I had to leave Firefox and start it up again before new custom tab started working, but this may have been due to tests so many extensions back to back.
