  Strange could you please check if the "Windows Audio" service has been disabled.
  Go to RUN and type "services.msc", scroll down to "Windows Audio" and make sure it is running and/or standing on "automatic".

  This service should always runs.

  You can also try to remove the sound card and after restarting again the OS notebooks should recognize the card even once.

  first of all, make sure that you have installed all the important windows updates. All the updates on your system? Ok.

  Please visit the www.realtek.com site and download the latest driver for realtek HD sound cards. This driver WORKS 100% because I had a similar problem and after I installed the authentic realtek drivers, I had no problem with the sound.

  When you installed Windows 7 Pro, did you do a reformat and clean install, or have you just loaded Win 7? Part of the problem may be a residual of pirated software. I recommend a reformat and clean install if you can do it now.

  In the contrary case, the thing to look at is if there is a driver conflict between what driver is there now compared to what was there. Go to control panel | Device Manager and watch the video, sound, and game controllers section. What drivers are here for audio? And which audio driver your speakers are pointed to? The active audio driver suitable for your speakers.

  I tried the latest driver from the Web site of nvidia, tried latest from Toshiba Web site the driver and am not of ideas.
  Everytime I go to install a driver, the laptop will be bluescreen next time it starts. So I have to uninstall the driver and restart or do a system restore so I can't even get into standard windows to get it stable again.

  (2) what is the native screen resolution of your external display?
  Normally, you can change the resolution of the screen for the internal and external screen in graphics properties. Check it!

  (3) maybe, you need to activate the virtual scrolling feature in driver touchpad (Control Panel > mouse).

  (4) theoretically, you can use a dual boot with Vista and XP. Why not?
  But mind you, if you use the Toshiba recovery disc to install Vista it erases the entire HARD disk. So you first then install Vista and XP.
