Notify the switches - the reasons why I shouldn't put it no?

I understand when to notify the switches would be set to no (NLB and Unicast); However, how does it influence the VM environment?  I set it to no. to use NLB, but I would like to know if attributing it NOT is a negative thing.

Are there problems that might arise in assigning notify NO switches? Could Virtual Machines disconnect if a there is a failure of the NETWORK card? Or is it rather a good to have features?

Examples would be great.

Thank you
David

Yes, assigning "Notify switch" is a bad thing.

Here's why...  Your VMware hosts are connected to switches of the network physical (I hope at least two different those for redundancy).  These switches are MAC address, transfer of tables.  The tables to associate each MAC address to a physical switch port.  When a frame arrives, the switch will get the MAC address in the destination table and decide which physical port to send the image to.

If a failover from NIC, converses with your virtual machines with a different physical NIC it also means a different port on the physical network switches.  If you do not notify the network switches that something has changed, they will continue to search the information old tables and send frames to the old port.  Because the virtual machine is no longer at the old port, it won't have the frames.  You lose network connectivity.

Who can continue for a little while - anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two, until the switches update their tables.  For more details, search for gratuitous ARP.

If you are using NLB, you must do two things:

1) has cancelled two physical network adapters on each host and dedicate to those of NETWORK load balancing.   Create a new vSwitch, assign the NLB NIC dedicated to this new vSwitch and make sure that your NLB servers pass only.  Notify this vSwitch using willpower alone NLB where cheating is set to no.

(2) for large facilities, if you have several NETWORK load balancing servers, you can cancel just two or three hosts and makes a separate group.  You can disable HA in this cluster if you wish.  You can notify switches the value no and worry affect the rest of your virtual machines.

Hope this helps!
