Old GUI of Windows games do not run

I just got a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed to replace a 6 year with Windows XP machine.  I transferred a lot of what I call "wingames" from my old machine to my new.  (See list below).  These "wingames" are small (200 KB or less) GUI games I had for a time very very long - since Windows 3.1.  So far, they have worked in all versions of windows.  (I skipped Vista and went straight from XP to 7).

I get the error message is: "the version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are using.  Check your computer's system information to see if you need a x 86 (32 bit) or x 64 (64-bit) version of the program and then contact the software publisher. »

These games were written by small businesses for programming (sometimes a single programmer in his spare time), 20 years ago.  This being old, companies are no longer in existence, nor that they would support a 64-bit environment.

I tried to put in compatibility mode for Windows XP and 95 without success.  The error message above is displayed in compatibility mode as well.  I can't install in compatibility mode because there is no facility to perform.  These games came full size on disk 3 1/2 "back in the day.  Are there patches of other known for this problem?

Thank you.

  • Windows Vista does not run

Windows Vista will not run unless I chose the option "disable driver signing enforcement" as he cannot verify the digital signature of the file "\windows\system32\drivers\tcpip.sys".

    Hello

Which shows the file properties in the tab digital signatures? Is there a previous version on this tab? Basically, if it cannot verify the signature, the file may be damaged or has been replaced by an incorrect version.

You may want to run sfc/scannow from a high command prompt to validate all system files.

  • Windows game are not maximized after Alt + tab on

It seems that whenever I start a game, he struggles to remain maximized.  or if it starts fine and I alt + tab out of it, I will not be able to maximize again.

If I click on the game in the taskbar, it will maximize to a black screen for a few seconds, sometimes flashing the screen game, reducing me then automatically on the desktop. If I click randomly on the black screen (hoping to activate something in the game) for these few seconds, the game will sometimes load back on the screen and remain stable, but only if I'm lucky and it's a pain in the neck.

This has only been past moreso in the past months, but it seems more difficult to treat.  I see no changes significant I've done which might cause that.

I have windows vista 64-bit, Ive tried to play with my display screen resolution and video game options real (my monitor is currently in 1920 x 1080).  Ive tried all sorts of task including alt + tab-switching or "switch to...» "in the Task Manager.  Ive down them as an administrator.  Ive changed the settings for compatibility for the .exe.  None of them have made no difference.  ive tried with several different games, all two (as old as 8 years) old and new games (new this year).

If it helps to have a game especially allusion when trying to solve this problem, ive got starcraft 2 and dragon age: origins.

    Hey the egg.

What is the number and the model of your video card and monitor?

Since the problem is with all games, maybe try with a new driver for your video card. In most cases, get the latest driver solves these problems. If this does not work, you can go for method 2.

Method 1: Update your video card driver

For driver updates, see this link:update a hardware driver that is not working properly

Method 2: Run the clean boot

A little research showed that many background applications may interfere with the game causing unwanted results. The best bet is to prevent all third party applications to load to the top by performing the clean boot.

See: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Note: Ensure that you switch your computer to normal startup mode after completing the troubleshooting steps. Steps are available in the article above.

  • Under Vista 32-bit, windows update will not run.

    1. If an attempt is made to run Windows update, it displays the message that it cannot work because the windows update service is not running and the computer must be restarted.  Reboot has not fixed the problem.  Checking in MSCONFIG shows that the windows update service is running.  Tried the ap fix - it without success. Ideas?

    Hello

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

You can go to start-> type services.msc-> press on enter. In windows, go to Windows Update. Double click on it. Make sure it is running and the startup type is set to automatic. Make sure that the following services are also running:

    Remote procedure call (RPC)

    DCOM Server process Launcher

    RPC end point mapper

Make sure the service above are running and that their startup type is set to automatic.

Now, reboot your PC and then try again.

If Windows Update still fails, try this:

Click Start-> type-> right click cmd.exe and click Run as administrator.

    Then, run the following commands:

    CD %windir%\System32

    net stop wuauserv

    Ren c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old

    net start wuauserv

  • Windows games does not - to loose color and resize

I realize that this is not the most critical application in Windows Vista, but these games really provides a nice break.  When I open one of the windows games, the window and the cards are grayed out.  If I move my mouse over the game to another application window, the game returns to its colors original and active.  But as soon as I bring my mouse to try to play the game, it's all gray and have fun in size.
I tried to delete and add games available in the Control Panel, but alas... nothing
    Hi girl Lake of gold,.
-The problem only occurs with these games?
-Don't you make changes to your computer before the problem?

There are a few steps you can try:

    Step 1:

Perform the scan SFC . The tool (SFC.exe) System File Checker scans missing or system corrupted files and repairs them.

    Step 2:

If this doesn't help, you want to put your machine in a clean boot State in order to determine whether any third-party application is causing the problem to occur.

    Step 3:

If the above two steps are little help, you could create a new user account and check.
If it works fine in the new user account, you would want to fix the damaged user account .

This is the third time that this problem happened.  I'm going to do something, it of to say today looking at the ESPN web site and all froze.  Even the clock froze.  I got power at the bottom and when not restarted all services are runnig.  When you try to start Access denied.  Printers have disappeared. Updates cannot do.  Care does not run.  It seems that does not load eveythhing.  The past two times, I did a factory restore and that worked but took 2 days to recover the data and programs.  Is there a way to solve the problem with the duty to do so.  Very frustrating.

Are you logged on as ADMINISTRATOR? Right click on the line BEFORE the opening of the window?
You can get ADMIN once it is open.

You uncompress the file and click on the bluescreenview.exe?

Use Safe Mode if you can - repeatedly press F8 - although this should not be necessary.

Of course start with a Windows or repair to manage the SFC, checkdisk and other methods.

  • Error D3D error fatal - in GTA IV and the game does not run.

    Hello

GTA iv will not work. I get the fatal error message, the error D3D.

I contacted Rockstar and they advised to update .NET 3.5 and install installation web dx.

Please let know us if I really need to do those things that I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I would have thought that the latest Dotnet is already in the operating system.

Finally, where can I find which version of Dotnet I. It does not appear in the list of programs.

    Thank you very much

    roystont5038.

    They are probably right.

It seems that many times some games refer to pieces of DX9-coding, which somehow is not recognized, thus generating errors.
It can't hurt to install .NET 3.5 and (re-) install DirectX, I found a lot of (mostly older games however) the issues have been resolved by installing DX9.0c.
No idea why. but seems to be a magical charm :)

Do you get any error messages?  How long it has past?  An easy solution to try is the Microsoft FixIt for the Windows Update components.  This tool automatically attempts to solve the problems of Windows Update, which is available here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/en-us.  Under the difficulty for me article, there is a button that you click called Microsoft Fix it.  Run this cmdlet and follow the instructions.  It will ask you if you want to run in aggressive mode.  I run first without the aggressive mode, and if this does not resolve your problem, run again by using aggressive mode.

Let us know how it goes for you.

  • Windows 7 will not run the exe files correctly.

I tried to open a file with Notepad as I thought Notepad was the right program to open it. I used the "open with" prompt and select Notepad. It did not open, but immediately after, all single exe files had a picture of Notepad open with notepad and say various gibberish.

After that, I managed to get on chrome right on the PIN I had attached to the taskbar, and then selecting an of my favorites.

I looked for solutions and tried two different solutions so far, regedit solution and the Fix It solution.

Later, I thought that maybe adobe would be able to run exe files, he then began to show an image of the software adobe reader on exe files.

Now, every time I try to open an exe it lands open adobe reader and sitting there without understanding.

I have restart after trying all the solutions and am now at my wits end to know what to do.

.exe, .lnk and other types should not be associated with any program. If you're wrong them associated with a program, it always opens that particular program with the file name as argument. You can reset the UserChoice registry key for this file type. Check:
