Oracle ASM normal, high and external redundancy

Hello

I have some doubts in the levels of normal, high, and external redundancy in the concept of the DSO.

External - any group fail. No mirroring.

Normal - two way mirror. Group of failure.

Top - three way mirror. Group of two failed.

1. I hope that my understanding on above mentioned 3 types in good.

2. my main question is what is the minimum number of disks required for the establishment of normal and external redundancy disk group? We cannot create disk group with the members of a single disc?

Kind regards

007

Normal - two way mirror. Group of failure.

Top - three way mirror. Group of two failed.

This is false. You need at least two failure for normal and three groups of failure for high redundancy.

By default, each disk or logical unit number is a group of default, but you can also add more drives to the same group of interlacing of the installation failure. The configuration depends on material available, disk space requirements and the needs of redundancy. ASM provides redundancy between groups of failure.

Remember that ASM is not disk mirror. It is not RAID. ASM from mirrors of the level and allocation of file units. He knows about Oracle database files and can therefore use optimum and variable block sizes based on the patterns of files. You can add and remove disks to reconfigure your drive grouips online without having to re - initialize your storage, which you can not do with RAID or external redundancy.

    Hello

We are about to install a solution RAC on IBM AIX 5.3 LPAR and VIO.
According to Oracle certification, we are forced to use DSO (11 g) for storage.
Because we have a huge SAN solution for all our systems, also the installation of the DSO will run on the SAN
The complete SAN is in a RAID5 or RAID10 configuration. This automatically means that we will use external redundancy
The database that will be placed on the system is currently around 50 GB in size.

Now that you guys and women think how to set start, if

    one)
We set up initially only 1 disc in the diskgroup to 60 GB for example,
ASM does support the ability to increase a logical disk, because we are currently used, using the VIO Server?
If it is not supported there so if the diskgroup needs to be extended, add another disk the same size, or we can add disks with smaller sizes

    (b)
We set up initially more discs of small size in the diskgroup, making a total of 60 GB
ASM will probably begin the distribution of the data on the three disks.
    Overhead that does?
That this has a negative impact, because the three logical drives are already in a striped solution (RAID10)?

(If the extension of the logical drive using the VIO in Setup a) only supported, automatically end up in b).
But I would like to know head/experiences and advice.

    Thanks in advance

You can increase the size of the logical unit number, which is a Member

  • If you use network storage, configure ASM disks with external redundancy groups

    Hi Experts,

If you use network storage, configure ASM disks with external redundancy groups. Don't use groups of Oracle ASM failure. Oracle failure groups consume cycles additional CPU and can run in unpredictable ways after suffering from a disk failure. When you use external redundancy, disk failure are transparent to the database and do consume no additional database CPU cycle, because it is discharged on storage processors.

    This does not mean

    • RAID 1 + 0 for diskgroup + REDO1
    • RAID 1 + 0 for diskgroup + REDO2
    • RAID 5 for diskgroup + DATA
    • RAID 5 for diskgroup + FRA

  • Oracle ASM, SAN and VMware

    Hello

I have a question about using Oracle ASM. If I only have a single physical disk of SAN (2 disks mirrored) IO isolated for an Oracle VM is there anywhere in the ASM application in file system VMs by creating several virtual disks to support ASM so everything is still really only to access physical disks? It's the first time that I have to do an Oracle VM install and I want to ensure that the directors have the info just to set up the DB.

I see it's #14 tip in the doc of advice Essentiual deployment using Oracle ASM, but it says nothing about the assumptions... for example: is there more than one physical disk? I think the DBA doesn't want to bother with ASM as there is only a single physical disk under this virtual machine, but we are in a virtual world now and I think that the same would be true for a physical server are necessarily the case for a virtual.

    Thank you

You only have a drive and a 100 MB database?   In this case, ASM is probably an extra layer of complexity which is not necessary.

ASM is much more suited for the dissemination of data piles of many, and in cases where the management of database space is a consideration.

After you apply the effect of cropping (fx effects/processing/crop), you change the cropping effect under apply effects/Applied effects Palette/panel expanded Crop which is placed there once you apply the crop effect to the clip. Please see screenshot for the expanded Panel harvest sliders that allow a culture you want.

Good idea to watch the first Elements 12 Mac tryout to make sure that the program is compatible with your IT environment and responds to the needs of your video.

If you do the crop with the crop effect, you shouldn't have to use the presets for PiP under fx effects/Presets for all of this. The effects of culture works on photos and videos. The program comes with a working space Expert and fast. For the FX transform cultures, see the Expert work.

  • Prepare disks for ASM (data files and FRA)

I intend to place data files on a disc 1 (sd1) and disk2 (PSD) when the backup of files (FRA) on disk3 (SDC). Here's how I'd do:

    For data files
Disk1 is divided into a single primary partition (with native Linux what ID 83 not formatted system)
Disk2 is also divided into a single primary partition (with native Linux ID 83 system not formatted)

    oracleasm createdisk vol1/dev/sda1
    oracleasm createdisk vol2/dev/sdb1

    CREATE DISKGROUP DATA EXTERNAL vol1, vol2 REDUNDANCY;

    For backup FRA

    Disk3 is partitioned into four primary partitions: / Boot (ext3), / (ext3), swap (swap) and /u01 (ext3)

The FRA will be put under the/U01 and then attend the ASM:

    oracleasm vol3/dev/sdc4 createdisk
    CREATE DISKGROUP DATA EXTERNAL vol3 REDUNDANCY;

Now, the problem. (1) the/U01 has already be formatted in ext3; (2) Oracle (DBMS) software will also be place under/U01

    It will be a problem?

Otherwise, I can put FRA on the same drive as the data files, i.e. on disk1 and disk2. In this case, I need to partition the disk 1 in two primary parititions sda1 and sda2 (native Linux system ID 83 not formatted), one for data files and another for FRA (do the same for disk2). The downside is that the data file and the file recovery will be on the same hard drive.

    Please offer some suggestions.

    Thank you

    Scott

PS: in the environment of production, all the disc 1, 2 and 3 will be on hardware RAID 1.

RAID 1 will protect you only a device failure. It won't protect you partition, the file damage system or user errors; It will be in the image of the errors and problems like any other data.

So what happens if you delete by mistake / U01 or some other accident happens and you loose that partition? With your current setup, you will lose everything and will not be able to restore or recover the database. Put tablespaces FRA and DB on the same physical device is certainly a very bad idea, whether or not it is a RAID.

ASM is not a software RAID 1 mirror. It ensures redundancy of data based on file extensions and knows about files of Oracle database, which is a very good thing. You probably do not want to specify 'external redundancy.

In a production system, you'll certainly want to mux the critical data and to store the DB controlfiles, redo logs and finally archivelogs on media separate physically in order to avoid the single point of failures wherever possible. You can use partitions and volumes in ASM, but they should be separate physical drives, otherwise you will bypass the ASM data redundancy. You must also have a solid strategy for RMAN backup. The FRA is supposed to store backupsets RMAN, copies of the image, the important archivelogs and multiplexes of the copies of the database files and should therefore always on a separate physical disk.

Unless you simply play, I strongly suggest that review you your current configuration.

Wouldn't not on the same + (ABOVE)?  Alternatively, use a disk full-fledged, disk4 (ext3 file system)?

    Thank you

    Scott

First of all, the reason for multiplexing online redo logs and control files is not the same as that of multiplexing archivelogs. Do it online and the control file are actually a part of the database.  The database will not work without them.  This is why it is so important to have multiplex.  Archivelogs, on the other hand, are part of your backup strategy.  The database itself really doesn't care if you have any archivelogs at all.  The archivelogs multiplexing is much less common.  I have never multiplexed mine, but I do not have a task that runs every hour to copy any newly created on a server off-site.

If your database is on ASM, at least a control file and a member of each group of redo log must be in ASM.  Technically, is not having to be, but it's really foolish not to do so.  Where to put the second copy?  Probably several schools of thought on this.  If your FRA is on ext3, so it seems a simple decision... a FRA copy, a copy in its default location in ASM.

    Hi all

I'm trying to debug a hardware problem on my Toshiba Satellite A45. I am running Ubuntu 10.04, but I don't think that it's operating system or related software.

Basically, anything that could use the screen much. If instead, I work only from a prompt, even when the application could do a lot of work, I do not encounter this problem. After stopping all applications, the CPU usage is always higher than normal (90% idle, should normally be slowed down to about 99%).

It s interesting why you think that this may be software related issue

I think that it is a typical software problem because the RAM and the HARD drive has been verified you have reported this in the message

So what to say maybe some virus or malware likely to obstruct the CPU and the memory usage
Or there is some process in the background that are not properly

I recommend you to reinstall the Windows operating system or another distribution of Linux that runs NO Live CD, but which is installed on the HARD drive
I m sure that s kind of the process that is disabled and crashes somewhere in the background

I learned my first lesson the hard way.  'Assume' that you buy a new router that it will work with other new technology equipment.  Cisco needs to print somewhere in the product descriptions, their record of router there are size limits on external hard drives.  I got burned after buying a 3 to WD USB 3.0 hard drive that I can't use it on my current E3000 or their last E4200.  At least support knew this answer fast enough.  My bad for not taking the time to reflect, I search this site to find the list of external USB drives that will work with the E3000.

All I wanted to do was store multimedia files on a shared network drive.  I'm cheating the system now and using a shared drive on the main PC.  The whole point of my project is not not to have the main PC running to share media.

Before this old router of 60 day of scrap, has anyone had experiences on the use of WDs My Life 2 to external HD connection ETHERNET?

Someone actually one of these drives installed on an E3000 using win xp pro?  I search high and low here, but couldn't find a list of acceptable external Ethernet disks or the size limitations.

Burned once, lesson learned, don't get burned again.

    Thank you

If your external drive supports Ethernet, then you will be able to use it with your router.

Wired the external drive to your router using an Ethernet cable, then connect the router configuration page and click on the status tab and below click on the "Local area network" sub-tab and click on "DHCP Client" in the table of client DHCP list you will find the IP address for the external drive. Using this IP address, you can map the drive on your computer.

To map the drive on your computer, click on start - RUN - type "\\External address IP Drive", and click ok... When you are prompted for the type of user name and password for the user name and password click OK, now you should be able to see the folders that you created, right-click on it and select map network drive and click Finish.

Hello. I had a few questions. It focuses on internal and external HDD. I have Vista and XP. I read a bit of info I would like to shed some light on.

    The system configuration required

    • Mac OS X 10.5.2 10.4.10+, +.
    • Windows 2000/XP/Vista
Note: the 4 TB version works with Windows® Vista only. Windows 2000/XP do not support hard drives with capacities above 2 TB.

I guess it's true. So: If someone were to buy a 4 TB model: can you even plug the drive in Windows XP and then partition it in two? Or will it give errors or not be recognized?

What about Windows 7? I guess it's more advanced than Vista. Obviously.

I am looking for 3 Tb + internal and external HARD drive. I can not find them. I ' v looked on the websites Seagates and Western Digital, Future Shop and Best Buy, local stores, etc. Maybe I missed them. I think I can start to see well for the holiday season.

CREATE DATA base should be with the ORACLE_SID set to the desired database SID, not the SID of the DSO.  Also, if you have (as in 11 g) two separate ORACLE_HOMEs for the ASM and the database, the DATA CREATE database must be run ORACLE_HOME database.
