    Hi all

We want to install our Oracle (11.2.0.4) database on SAN disks.

    Would be very different architecture?

What are the points of concern?

    Thank you.

Right, well is not very different. Two cases, you see the LUNS as "drive" - you're going to use ASM or file system? Ideally, you want to disable the collection for these readers, I think that this is part of the installation in guide.

The only concern is the MPIO (Multipath) for access to the LUNS and make sure that it will not fail if one HBA fails. Also MPIO takes care that you have all the paths to the storage in a single LUN and not two or four drivers but again that should be done by the SA for sure.

    Hello

So I try to change display it products on an element to generate Menu, but I still find myself with my context of IbaseSpec is null. • Oracle Database Disaster Recovery SAN replication consistency

    Hi all

just a quick question after a long search and not yet knowing the answer.

What technology or configuration do I need make the eve of Oracle DB compatible on asynchronous SAN replication between cities?

The version is Oracle Standard Edition 11 g, then the enterprise like DataGuard and GoldenGate features aren't possible?

Entire database replication Oracle Streams don't work?

    Hello

You can do it yourself (as everyone else used to do many years ago), to a product like dbvisit which is popular in this space (never used, but I heard good things about this). Streams can do it, but I think he uses triggers rather than redo log mining so he can have more impact on the source system.

SAN replication is possible but probably very expensive and you should be sure it correctly handles oracle blocks - the seller must be able to tell if it is certified or not.

  • Oracle ASM, SAN and VMware

    Hello

I have a question about using Oracle ASM. If I only have a single physical disk of SAN (2 disks mirrored) IO isolated for an Oracle VM is there anywhere in the ASM application in file system VMs by creating several virtual disks to support ASM so everything is still really only to access physical disks? It's the first time that I have to do an Oracle VM install and I want to ensure that the directors have the info just to set up the DB.

I see it's #14 tip in the doc of advice Essentiual deployment using Oracle ASM, but it says nothing about the assumptions... for example: is there more than one physical disk? I think the DBA doesn't want to bother with ASM as there is only a single physical disk under this virtual machine, but we are in a virtual world now and I think that the same would be true for a physical server are necessarily the case for a virtual.

    Thank you

You only have a drive and a 100 MB database?   In this case, ASM is probably an extra layer of complexity which is not necessary.

ASM is much more suited for the dissemination of data piles of many, and in cases where the management of database space is a consideration.

  • Oracle 11g R2 RAC on IBM with SAN storage

    Hello Experts,

I design an implementation for RAC Oracle 11 g 2 on AIX 6.1 with IBM's SAN storage. My drawing do not include Oracle ASM, I know, it is recommended to use Oracle ASM, but my purpose is not included

I read the Guide of Installation of Oracle Grid Infrastructure and I have below questions about storage configurations:

    1. do I need a special configuration to replace the DSO?
    2. is it compulsory to use HACMP (IBM's Clustering solution) because I don't use ASM? Since based on the infrastructure Grid section 3.2 Installation guide (the Storage Configuration shared): [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e17210/storage.htm] there is a section 3.2.7 "Configuration HACMP multinode disk Heartbeat (MNDHB) for Oracle Clusterware" so my question is it is mandatory to use HACMP if I don't want to use ASM?
    3. in the same above installation guide, mentioned in section 3.2.8 that "to use the raw logical volumes for Oracle Clusterware, HACMP must be installed and configured on all nodes in a cluster." what is raw logical volumes? is it compulsory to use it? Since I'm not on ASM?
4 installation guide, in sections 3.2.3 to sections 3.2.9 are these prerequisites sections sections 3.2.10 to 3.2.15? or I can simply ask section 3.2.10 to 3.2.15 without applying 3.2.3 to 3.2.9?

    One last Question:

ASM is integrated with the cluster software, do a separate license or license the license of the ASM cluster cover?

    Kind regards

    NB wrote:
    Hello Levi,

the information provided is very useful. But what I heard in the installation guide network infrastructure that the raw device needs HCMP while GPFS need not of HACMP, GPFS is a cluster provided by IBM file system.
    Your input please?

    Hello

Raw disk device (RD) is the LUN (disk) storage mapped on AIX.
Raw logical volume (RLV) is the LUN (device) created the LVM of AIX.

If you use devices of raw disk that you don't need HACMP, because AIX (core) has only receive instructions from Oracle to read and write, AIX does not support concurrency control in the raw disks, this control is managed by Oracle.

If you use raw logical volumes (CLVM) HACMP must be installed and configured on all nodes in the cluster, volume logic is a feature of AIX (IBM) to enable simultaneous mode, you install HACMP, Oracle not manage concurrency control because Oracle does not know that there is an LVM behind.

You are right, that the new version of GPFS are usable without HACMP.

can I place the binary oracle, oracle home etc on the SAN rather than the local disk? advanatages/disadvantatges etc.

Yes you can. This is often used for some cases (common house of Oracle RAC).
My opinion is space SAN is too expensive for a space of waste in this way (if there is another option).
Note in case you create the RAC installation so you can make shared Oracle Home, but do not try to create shared inventory.

  • Network SAN seems slow

    Hello

I am looking for input on how our Setup could be better organized. Overall, the best rate we can get is 30-40 MB/s tops. IO operations higher such as roaming profiles are an extraordinary amount of time. We use Citrix XenDesktop 7 with only 80 total jobs, often 50 are used on an average day. We have the normal assortment of other servers: Exchange, SQL, AD, file storage. I started thinking that maybe it's something with our Installer.

    Material:

4 R810s from Dell, 4 builtin network cards are used for iSCSI, a PCIe card of add-in for both ports of 10 GB for ESXi 5.1 ethernet traffic. ESXi has iSCSI attributed to 9000bytes to the switch and port.

1 EqualLogic PS6000xv (16 x 600 GB 15 k rpm hard drives, controller is 4ports all iSCSI traffic value, no port management dedicated)

1 EqualLogic PS6100E (24 x 2 TB 7200 RPM hard drives, controller has 4 iSCSI ports and dedicated management port 1)

These two without are configured as a balanced loading group. Frames of 9000 bytes is enabled.

The San are related to our stack of core 2 3750 s Cisco. All iSCSI ports are vlan d together. Frames of 9000 bytes are defined.

The ESX hosts are connected to a Cisco Nexus 5010. Two interfaces of 10 GB link the link to the 3750 s.

    Everything works the latest firmwares.

What is an optimal configuration? Split the berries would be the best option? Did I miss something else entirely? I would appreciate any input. Thank you.

    -March

You specify the model 3750, if it is the X, there is a Setup for this on the portal of quick setup guide:

Go to this link, see the Configuration Guide (information on Setup network), and then click the Quick Setup Portal EqualLogic, link on this page is the configuration for the 3750 X and ESX settings.

Also, you want to configure all of your ESX hosts in this document on best practices:

    en.Community.Dell.com/.../20434601.aspx

Also, you must install a system running the SANHQ to help get a better understanding of your performance.  This can help support if after reviewing these documents, you can not get the expected performance.

  • 3rd party such as san replication solution: strategy

    Dear Experts,

Can you please share some of your ideas.

Oracle DataGuard comes free with Oracle Enterprise Edition (EE). The only reason why a company could NOT use Oracle DataGuard is because they are not on the ERA and the cost of upgrading to EE just to use DataGuard does not justify the price.

With 3rd party such as san replication solution. (for example hp3par)

It is obvious that the all-flash backup can be quick.

What should be the strategy to have DR site get a few seconds, if the primary site failed for some reason any

    2. so that the DR site facing up and running within 60 seconds, it still requires too much time to restore the database on remote site and have archive APPLIED setpoint

    Hello

Great topic, I'll try to summarize all this in a post.

I have worked with HP EVA for a few years and I must say that I have used many of the features of replication - HP EVA Business Copy (local replication) and HP EVA continues access (remote replication) as well - for the oracle database and other applications as well. Most storage systems use copy-on-write to create two points in time of the LUN (snapshot) image or clone LUN using cow again.

Of course, like other people, said earlier the replication SAN is block based, in the same way with Dataguard, you have synchronous and asynchronous replication. When your data is written to the data files it usually goes in storage cache and then is pushed down the disc as soon as it will be more efficient, at the same point, replication is pushing data to the Dominican Republic. The same way with Dataguard if you use synchronous replication that you won't get you "speedy return" until the blocks of primary storage has been written for DR storage system.

I never had problems with replication to be honest. I used a lot of copy of databases of production using local replication. For example if you want to quickly test a patch on the production system, you can create a snapshot that will only increase with the amount of changes you have made. The only concern is nowadays though we use ASM so if your diskgroup names are the same in DEV that the PROD does not work the approach that I mention.

Regarding remote replication - because you do not have Dataguard more every time you failover to the Dominican Republic to your database will pass by instance recovery!

Regardless of the type of replication is not the speed but the latency of the network - SAN or Dataguard, you will always have a penalty of a long replication distance. The biggest typical WAN latency factor is the speed of light, via fiber optic cable, which is about 124 miles per millisecond. Based on that you can calculate what would be the round-trip latency time.

Indeed for many people SE installation choose DBvisit Standby to manage their databases on hold. I did the installation of the couple and it is really simple and works out of the box. However, your RPO depends on how often you switch your redologs and how many times you ship them to the backup site. You must configure dbvisit to spend with each log file (all the 5,10,15 minutes) OR configure archive_lag_target to configure OR use both at the same time. Also, you can store a copy of the archivelogs on a separate location just in case, for example, an NFS share.

And finally my five cents on RAC on Clusters of extended - be careful with this one. Each of the nodes in the extended database cluster need access to both storage (primary and DR) systems. You must also third location to store a voting quorum disk, usually an NFS share. It is also very important to note that the latency between the nodes is of crucial importance due to global cache activity.

    Kind regards

  • SAN based replication options

What are the SAN based replication with oracle dataguard purchase options?

All those set up SAN replication (for DR) on front without oracle dataguard?

Nothing against Oracle Data Guard but as based replication option SAN - EMC VPLEX provides very good option to achieve the RTO of zero which is not possible otherwise.

It is certified by Oracle, so no worries around support.

    Thank you
