What are the advantages and disadvantages about installing vSphere 5 on USB
I am having trouble to make the iscsi boot and mused with a temporary workaround.
I want to install vSphere 5 on a USB key, boot on USB and when all the problems with boot iscsi are resolved, use vMotion to migrate the virtual machine to another ESX host. What are the advantages and disadvantages regaring USB-install?
Maybe it's even better that run start iscsi.
Hello
We have no difference between USB install and install ESXi on hard drive. all functions and features are the same. You have following additional configuration on USB Installer if necessary
-Remote Syslog configuration
-Netdump configuration or change the coredump on hard drive partition by creating additional VMKcore on hard drive.
-Try to use the qualified USB key (refer to the hardware vendor documentation).
Not looking for any specific limitation other than mentioned above.
Thank you

Hello
Sorry for the question, but it is not clear for vmware... tells me that vsphere 4 virtual machines can add usb controllers, but it does not support usb pass through.
QUestion: if I attach a USB drive in physical machines vmware, can work in the guest operating system?
Thank you!
Francesco
Don't know if it's SO hard or not, but ESX does not support USB port mapping yet.

Qualcuno ha some info Mérito?
Con ESXi hai not many options.
UNA it could be (to hai una VM) di attacking USB went VM e poi importare con macchina he vSphere Client e he datastore browser da quella VM.
Da vSphere 4.1 USB virtualizzato nelle VM e 2.0 e quindi shoes come prestazioni (Halter comunque più lento del reale).

Running vSphere Client (GUI) of USB?
Hi all
I have a simple question:
Is it possible to run vSphere graphical Client for managing ESXi host from a USB key/key? (Essentially, a standalone GUI not requiring no installation.)
I want to avoid installation on my laptop and all the paperwork and it will cause permissions...
Thank you
Stijn.
PS: I tried to find the magic combination of keywords in my search unsuccessful queries.
Stijn,
I copied the "\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\Virtual Infrastructure Client" directory tree to a computer on which the VMware vSphere Client, was installed to another computer that had no front installed VMware software. Then I ran "\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\Virtual Infrastructure Client\Launcher\VpxClient.exe" on the new computer and it works OK. So I think it will be possible to run the VMware Client vSphere since a USB device also. The directory tree has a size of 360 MB.

I'm under ESXi 5.0 on a HP BL460c G1.
Guest operating system is Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP1.
vSphere Client runs on Server 2003 Standard SP2.
I'm trying to virtualize a former server that is essential to the daily operations because the material on what there currently is 6 years old and management does not want to spend the money to have it replaced.
One of the requirements of the software is a security device that is currently parallel, but we can get a USB version.
Now the problem is I can not all USB devices to connect to the virtual machine that I created.
- I tried to do a USB transfer under the host's configuration > advanced settings. but he said to me 'Host does not support configuring passthrough ".
- I tried to connect a vSphere Client computer USB device; He tells me that the device is about to be disconnected from the host and connected to the virtual machine. Then after clicking 'ok' I get the message "the remote device on < virtual machine > to < device > is disconnected."
It actually shows the name of the virtual machine instead of < virtual machine > and < device > is 'v2.0.33.
Is there a way to fix this disconnect usb?
> Configuring the host > advanced settings
It's active VMdirectpath. You don't need that for the USB transfer.
It could be more ideal to connect the USB device directly to the host. In this case
(1) edit the VM and add a USB controller. You will do this on the Hardware tab.
(2) add a USB device to the virtual computer. You'll also do this on the material tab for the virtual machine.

Hello world
I'm currently under vSphere ESX on a Dell Optiplex 740 in my lab at home and I'm very happy with the results, but I would like to be able to dual boot without adding a 2nd hard drive. I think that vSphere ESXi would be ideal for this. What I want to do is to load vSphere on a USB and then set the BIOS to use the USB as the first boot device. I have Windows 7 equipped hard drive and this way I could start Windows 7, each time the USB key is deleted. I understand that I will need to load the image of vSphere on the USB but I have no idea how to do that. Are there images that would be suitable for this purpose? Can I use any USB?
Thank you.
Install USB is supported directly from the ESXi installation disc. Insert the key and start the installation. If you have important data on the hard drive I have to temporarily disconnect the disk hard until you are installed.

I'm trying the installation, installation esxi4 using freenas with RDM have ZFS database backend to connect via NFS to other virtual machines that reside on the same physical server. Everything works, but my problem comes with the boot for freenas volume which I try to have a USB key. Any ideas on how to achieve this.
> ESXi does NOT support USB devices for customers.
Yet. But in next vSphere 4.1 USB devices are fully supported. Unofficial info.

USB to guest virtual mapping Instructions VSphere V5
Hello
I need clear instructions on how to map a USB dongle to a virtual guest with VSphere 5.
I was hoping it would be as easy as mappping a CD but that doesn't seem to be the case.
If I insert the USB into a free USB port on the physical ESX Server and then access the VSphere client and select the "Connect to the USB device" icon, I have three options: 1 DigitalPersona Validity Sensor, 2 top Android phone and 3. Sunplus Innovation HP Webcam HD.
Should I be selecting one of them? Should I do something else first?
Any advice would be very appreociated.
Kind regards
Cossy
When you click the USB button in the vSphere Client, it shows you the devices connected locally — not the devices connected to the server. See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1022290 for instructions to add a USB host device.

How does the vSphere with external Fax and USB license keys?
I intend P2Vng a couple of servers, but one of them has an external modem for faxing. Another server has a USB key.
It will cause problems? Will it be possible to virtualize these?
Hello
VSphere 4.1 supports the USB transfer I think still that a USB to the device of the IP works better that thereby you do not pin a virtual computer to a given host. HA, DRS, FT still works.
Best regards

VSphere ESXi Update 1 to access the data on a USB key.
I have ESXi Update 1 installed and you want to access the data on a USB key.
(1) someone could let me know if plug a USB memory stick directly the ESXi server hardware is supported in update 1?
(2) and/or could someone let me know how I can access files on a sick memory that is attached to the computer on which I have installed client vSphere on (I'm then going to the VM to the server ESXi from this PC).
I want to just access the files (ona USB key) in the VMs (update information Lic) operating system. Is this possible?
You will not be able to do, vSphere does not allow access to USB devices.
You can try VMDirectPath with your USB PCI controllers, but anyway are still not supported.

Ahora veo en the Máquina virtual own that I can add a usb.
¿quiere decir esto as puedo mapear UN usb directly a Máquina esa?, TR're asi do not're arriesgado pinchar UN usb en el servidor how eso?, o simplemente el tema are are no me haria falta instalar any software fr the virtual machine?
¿alguna ajala sober esto?
Gracias

vSphere ESXi 4.0 Build 171294 how can I access my USB hard drive?
Is it possible to mount the USB hard drive with VM server with vSphere, ESXi 4.0? Thank you.
Your server must support Intel VT - d (IO done and this is not the same as VT (Virtualization Technology) x). The only option would be USB over IP.

vSphere - external USB drive to the data store local copy
Hello world
Yesterday, I created this post: http://communities.VMware.com/message/2135813
With your help, we managed to find the only way to install ESXi to ISO image to USB external hard drive is to be attached to the machine near her and run the Setup from there, cannot be done directly.Today, we need your help in the next step, as it seems.
We have a Dell r.620 physical machine with VMware ESXi 5.0 installed U1. We have an external hard drive with the operating system installation ISO images, software backup and a little more.
The question is - how to copy the data from the external USB connected directly to the ESXi host to the data store local disk on the host.
Yes, we know that we can do in the way that connect us to the machine on the same location and copy it into the data from there store. But we would do it directly. And we don't very well see by ourselves or using Google Uncle again.
Poor ability to research, or is not possible?
Thank you very much for your help!
The court to do is to use the Datastorebrowser or WinSCP
ESXi itself can only read the Fat16 drives - so what looks like the short path is the long way ;-)
