Software iSCSI configuration

Where we get number IQN that we need to manually enter static configuration of the software iSCSI discovery.

It depends - some have the ability to not be discovered. Give it a try, in case of doubt. If this does not work, then you will need access to the management interface or know someone who can.

  • ESX iSCSI Configuration recommendation

    Hello

I wonder what is the best configuration of the storage card in the following scenario to provide a NIC host and SAN controller redundancy. The SAN must be directly connected to each host that I don't have one at the moment gigabit switch, which means each link point to point in its own subnet as below.

    Host 1:

    iSCSI_A1: 192.168.1.2/30

    iSCSI_B1: 192.168.1.5/30

    Host 2:

    iSCSI_A2: 192.168.1.9/30

    iSCSI_B2: 192.168.1.13/30

    ISCSI SAN:

    A1 of the host: 192.168.1.3/30

    B1 the host: 192.168.1.6/30

    A2 of the host: 192.168.1.10/30

    Host B2: 192.168.1.14/30

According to the article, VMware KB: considerations for use port binding software iSCSI in ESX/ESXi, I should not use links in Port because each link is in a separate broadcast domain. Does this mean that I have to put up 2 iSCSI adapters on each ESX host software and just use the dynamic discovery?

    Thanks for any help.

Of course, no problem. Make sure you see both paths, under Configuration-> storage adapter-> select your iSCSI adapter. Example like this. In this case, I have 12 aircraft 24 channels, so 2 paths to each device (LUN).

  • Is there a way to remove the software iSCSI 10W?

    Hello

We have helped the software iSCSI adapter, add 'Vitrtual Switch' and 'Port group' for iSCSI testing.

Now, we have already deleted the virtual switch and would like to know if it is possible to remove the software iSCSI adapter?

OR Alternatively, we can leave the adapter software there without deleting?

    Thank you

    Post edited by: TonyJK

You can remove the software iscsi adapter by disabling everything first. Under the SWiscsi adapter > properties > configure > disable activated.

After that, the server will request a reboot for the change.

After this restart, swiSCSI adapter would have been automatically deleted.

  • How to add the software iSCSI adapter in vSphere, ESXi 5.0?

    Hello

Please give me the steps to add the software iSCSI adapter in vSphere, ESXi 5.0.

    Thank you.

    Hello

In an earlier version of VMware ESXi software iSCSI adapter was included in the list of the storage card, but is not in the case of VMware ESXi 5.0. In ESXi 5.0 iSCSI adapters are not listed by default and must be activated first before we go away from configuration.

  • Software iSCSI or Broadcom HBA w/TOE?

ESXi 4.1 loading on 3 Dell R710.  ESXi is picking up the 1 GB Broadcom 5709 as material hba, however nothing I tried helped me activate frames.  When I implemented the hba with frames and make a new analysis, he will not come to the MD3000i LUNS.  (The 3000i detects the hba and I added to the host in the iscsi handler... still no joy at the end of ESXi.  Also I configured ports on the 3000 to accept the extended frame).  If I leave the mtu to 1500, everything works well under hardware iscsi.

When I use the software initiator with the same NETWORK card, I can activate frames.  (Documentation is ESXi confirms that for the Broadcom, it supports IPv6 and jumbo frames, but you can't blame a guy for trying).

My question: which would give better performance?  Should I use the material hba without jumbo frames to reduce the load of iscsi, or configure software iscsi with frames?  If I understand correctly, the iscsi software has been greatly improved if I'm not really sure which way to go.

(I posted this question at the end of another thread and received no bites so I thought I would like to transfer as a new question.)  I apologize.)

As you discovered, you can really change the MTU on the HBA Broadcom adapters.

Performance is always difficult to answer.  Of course, the biggest advantage of Broadcom cards is improvement in the effectiveness of the CPU.  There are benefits to this.  Also, realize that the initiator iSCSI ESX and initiator of Broadcom can saturate a link of 1 GB for block sizes more that are useful, even in the absence of the frames.

So if you are looking for CPU efficiency, for the most part, the block sizes, the Broadcom card will use less CPU host for the same flow as the frames with the initiator of ESX.

If you are looking for a pure flow, both can fill a wire for large block sizes, and which does not change much with the introduction of jumbo frames.

  • find the number of map software iscsi vmhba

Hi, im trying to write scripts for automation but I find on different server models the software iscsi adapter varies from vmhba32 to vmhba39

Is it possible that I can find that number using powercli so I can put it as a variable to be used for another command later in the script?

  • ESX 3.5i / software iSCSI?

I plan on upgrading a cluster of ESX 3.02 tomorrow to ESX 3.5.

I would use 3.5i because of its lack of a service console, we had some problems in the initial Setup, getting the iSCSI traffic because we have an iSCSI subnet separated from our hosted customer (who is on 192.168.x.x network).

Although I am quite familiar with 3.5i - I still try to use the software iSCSI with this version.   Can it be done?

    Sven

It should work without problem.  You will need to create a separate vSwitch for the iSCSI network with a kernel port assigned to the iSCSI IP address range.  You will also ensure that iSCSI is allowed through the firewall.

  • switch-v iSCSI configuration

I just got some iSCSI storage and try to add this to my vmware servers. The service console for my vmware server is on the subnet 192.168.2.x. I plan to use a separate subnet for iSCSI 192.168.3.x.  I don't want the iSCSI traffic on the same network as the rest of my servers.

I've isolated 8 ports on my switch for use with iSCSI.

The problem I have is that when I add a vmkernel interface to my v-switches, he wants to be on the same switch-v as my service console, but I want to use separate physical connections to the switch for 2 subnets. If someone else has had this problem and how did you get around it.

Also be aware if you use ESX and the iSCSI initiator of software you will need to place a service on 192.168.3.x network console because for the software iSCSI initiator to work the vmkernel and service console need to communicate to it - also don't forget to open port 3260 in the service console firewall

  • Can someone explain how to configure iSCSI multipathing software iSCSI?

I have two physical network adapters, dedicated to a vswitch iSCSI and I created a second VMkernel port, but don't know what to do next to make sure I have redundancy through multiple paths?

It depends on your type of storage.

If used if two different iSCSI network (such as the AXE, MD3000i,...) you must set 2 different vSwitches, for each network and add all 4 of your target to the iSCSI initiator.

If she used a flat (like Equallogic) iSCSI network you must use 1 vSwitch with at least 2 physical NETWORK adapter and 2 vmkernel interface and bind each interface to a network card.

  • ISCSI configuration

    Hello

I'm initiator configuration iSCSI on my ESXi 5 host software. I use the Dell PowerEdge r.620 server.

How are iSCSI Broadcom cards will be copied into the storage card from vCenter Server view.

At the moment I am unable to see any adapter storage Broadcom for the "storage card". I did all the steps below.

    (1) VSWITCH CONFIGURATION

    (2) standard vSwitch Configuration

    (3) add the VMkernel iSCSI Ports

    (4) ports VMkernel associated with physical cards

But I am unable to see the storage card BroadCom for the "storage card".

    Please suggest.

You won't see this map appears in the list of storage adapters. It is listed in the HCL as network.

Enable iSCSI Software adapter, get properties for it in the list of storage adapters, and then configure the networking from there.

  • several software iSCSI initiators

    Hello

I have not heard that someone does this, so just to make sure: is it possible to connect two or more without an ESX host? As far I knew each SAN would require its iSCSI initiator, but I only know how to activate the default initiator and not add multiple.

    Thanks for your reply,

    -Rainer

Yes, it is possible to connect multiple iSCSI targets to the iSCSI Software initiator.

Create several VMkernel ports bind to the iSCSI initiator.

    • Connect vmhba34 to vmk1: esxcli swiscsi nic add - n d vmhba33 vmk1

    • Connect vmhba34 to vmk2: esxcli swiscsi nic add - n vmk2 d vmhba33

    • Check the configuration of vmhba34: esxcli swiscsi nic list vmhba33 d

    • Vmk2 and vmk1 should be listed.

It is normally used to provide multiple active paths to iSCSI storage.

You can also create additional VMkernel ports for more than one iSCSI SAN network.

  • How to use 4 x 1 GB for software iSCSI NETWORK interface card.

Hello. I have a HP P2000 G3, with iSCSI connections 4 x 1 GB. I have 4 free 1 GB NIC on my 5.5 esxi server. IM wondering how I could put things upwards, so it would use iSCSI 4x1Go at the same time, so I would get a 4 Gbps to my SAN connection. Is this possible? I read something about iSCSI multi-trip and Port binding, but is all a bit confusing. It seems to me which is used for failover? I tried to put in place using a multipathing guide and got to the top and his display I 8 paths to my SAN, but it seems that a NETWORK adapter is used when considering my switch activity.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Initiators of software iSCSI Microsoft Cluster in guest

    Hi guys

I have a client who have iSCSI Storage... now they want to create a cluster, but I read that only FC SAN is supported for RDM...

but it seems that iscsi is supported as iscsi in guest...

If someone knows the configuration for this?

or is it as simple as:

    1. create iscsi volume of Quorum

    2. create iscsi for data volumes

3 activate the iscsi initiator in Windows 2008 guest VM

4 map these to W2008 VM iscsi volume

    5. create an another PortGroup-VLAN for the private heartbeat (is it necessary or the private sector can take thje same segment as the notrmal network)?

    Thank you very much

Oh, sorry I didn't answer your original question.

You are right, you must configure the virtual computer with 3 vNIC on 3 different subnets, then make sure that the public network is on top, when configuring the network order in the BONE (don't know where it was in 2008 for Windows, in Windows 2003 is configurable in the advanced network settings) Guest.
