  • How to run Oxford Talking Dictionary

    This version of WINDOWS 7 can not run my trusty Oxford Talking Dictionary. Help!

    I can't see the 'Oxford Talking Dictionary"in 64-bit. Not at all.  If my quick research is correct, it was finally released in 1998 - 64-bit isn't the problem.   ;-)

    People got it runs under Windows XP without too much effort (if any) - but it was really made for Windows 98.  Operate under Windows 7 is probably one lost cause - another that * maybe * with Windows 7 Professional/Enterprise/Ultimate editions and running Windows XP Mode and install inside the Windws XP virtual machine - or even some machine Manager virtual freeware like VirtualBox and running Windows XP (or earlier operating systems) within a virtual machine and install OTD (Oxford Talking Dictionary) in it.

    Of course, all that assumes that when you tried to install Windows 7 you have not only performed the installation in compatibility mode (Windows XP or Windows 98) but also, you change the shortcut that starts the application after the installation is running in the same level of compatibility mode (Windows XP or Windows 98.)

    It can be free online dictionaries that wouldreplace it now. ;-)

  • Add dictionary

    Hello.

    I have a question: I would like to add additional dictionaries in the Sierra of MacOS.

    Initially, some trouble with record find "dictionaries". But this problem is solved here: where is the dictionary in the Sierra folder

    After that, I saw:

    (It seems different from El Capitan).

    In the folder "CoreDataUbiquitySupport" can't get the files with the .dictionary extension.  And throughout the system (I used Spotlight) I cannot find these files.

    When I try to add my files with extension .dictionary in "Dictionaries" folder - nothing happened.

    Please, help me. What should I do?

    Thank you.

  • Dictionary find definitions

    Hello

    Since the installation of Sierra, I experienced some problems with the Dictionary application. I'll try to explain this in the least difficult way possible. So whenever I try to do a quick search of dictionary-based on Spotlight, Spotlight gives me no results for dictionaries monolingual English. This means that if I have the New Oxford American Dictionary and its corresponding Thesaurus, Spotlight do not think everything about these dictionaries and keep will show the results of dictionaries, I disabled it, which in this case is the bilingual Italian-English Dictionary. Now, as much as I appreciate see entries from the dictionary being translated in my own native language (Italian), I would also like to see the entries in the monolingual dictionary on Spotlight, I strongly need for my work. In short, I'm looking for something similar in view of that context when menu shows you yellow - highlight a Word while, for example, surf Safari. I have no problem with context menus because they show all the dictionaries that are enabled in the dictionary application preferences window. To summarize, it looks like that Spotlight does not recognize these two American dictionaries (I also tried with a Dutch-English Dictionary) and continues to find definitions for the bilingual. This phenomenon happens to you too much on the Sierra? I would also add that, as a countermeasure, I did the following: deleted the file com.apple.Spotlight.plist in the folder of user library, re-indexed Spotlight, tried on a new account user without result, disabled the definitions in Spotlight, moved preferences box and down the dictionaries selected in the pane preferably small in the dictionary.

    I appreciate your comments,

    Francesco

    The question I did experience is otherwise.

    I depend a lot on the context dictionary and see that it is missing, once upgraded to 10.12 is a bit annoying, not because I can not find how to fix it (because I think I have), but I'd need to know where to do this. Whenever I write a strange word, I try to make sure I use it properly. However, when I 'Look Up' a Word, I get a wikipedia article on a group of rock or something unrelated, like the component dictionary was gone by default.

    Only by reading this thread I was able to launch the dictionary application - which immediately began to download a copy of the New Oxford American Dictionary. I guess my next task is to find an easier to apply dictionary (Canadian) and understand how to install it.

    I'm trying to download a free trial of the Oxford American Dictionary. I had some problems to do it and now all I have in 'my world' is the program saying start download without movement of the status bar. It has been like that for about 45 minutes now. There is no change in free space (staying at 106 MB of free space). When I've highlight it and press the menu button, I get only the options 'show the memory bar', 'connect', "change application" and "close". Any ideas what to do with this download. I can't remove it and it doesn't seem to go anywhere?

    This compatibility mode is not guaranteed to work with all the old programs

    and you have changed the bit versions so that can cause more problems

    always check the compatibility of vista programs on the link below

    Here's what you should have tried to use?

    It is not compatible with vista, you can try running it in a previous operating system mode

    This does not work for all programs

    This question is for research purposes. Is it reasonably practical to run 3 operating systems, IE XP, Vista and Windows 7, each installed on a Solid State Drive ("SSD") and all in one PC descktop? If it is, then, could we change one system to another with a click of a swtich, IE fast?

    SSD is fast and durable. Windows XP is simple. Vista is useful for certain applications without accident, such as "Shorter Oxford English Dictionary". Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit is the best. I have not yet tried to win 8.

    Could you please tell me what you think?

    Thank you.
    Kind regards.

    Hi Dr. Reza,

    I see you want to know if multiple windows operating systems be installed on the computer. I'll help you with this problem.

    1. What is the brand and model of the computer?

    2. what security software is installed on the computer?

    You could install several operating systems of windows on the computer. You must be a little careful while working on the computer.

    You must create a partition about 25 GB for each operating system. You need to install XP first, then Vista and Windows 7. Be sure to include the latest service pack for the operating system.

    Refer to this article to learn more.

  • Recovery of "hidden" files

    On the 'C' on my HP flow 11 drive, I clicked the botton "hidden" on the "Windows" folder properties Now, the 'hidden' word is an adverb not a verb and the correct designation should have been 'hide' which means that the content should be hidden. Now, I can no longer access this folder - is possible to get back into this folder?

    And send a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary to you guys in Seattle?

    The files have become hidden (if that's what happened) because you have assigned to the attribute 'hidden' for them.  You can take a course in basic computer operation.

    What happens when you go to the file Explorer, click the view tab and then choose to show hidden files?

  • Debugger VMWF that can cause problems in Win 98 SE?

    Hello

    http://communities.VMware.com/message/1303409#1303409

    In the above referenced thread I was wondering why my Oxford English Dictionary 2nd ed. version 2 can install and run Parallels but not of VMWare Fusion. My apologies if you've read this before, but I reduced the question, so I shut the other threads and focusing on the issue of debugger in this thread. This is my last hope.

    FYI, I use VMWF on iMac 24 "3.06 ghz (Leopard 10.5.7) with Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS video card. After a few hiccups, I have manged to get my USB devices recognized in Win 98 is in VMWF. Everything just works great - much better than Parallels! EXCEPT my legally purchased OED CD-ROM (which has atrocious of the C-Dilla Safedisc 1 copy protection) fails authorization on VMWare Fusion but past without any problem on Parallels. (This version of the OED works in Win 98 is and I don't want to buy an another Windoze operating system anyway). Protection against the C-Dilla Safedisc copy made by Macrovision, and is most commonly used on the game software.

    I saw on the internet some mention that any presence of debugging of the softwareactivates or not will activate the Safedisc copy protection and prevent approval. (Apparently the hackers use debug software to get around the copy protection?) I have no idea. ) Parallels has no software debugging, AFAIK. VMWare Fusion does.  Is it possible to remove the VMWF debug software? Or does anyone have an experience with trying to get games with C - dilla Safedisc run on VMWare Fusion?

    Please if you know, help me. The OED is almost $400 (it's 20 volumes printed on a disc). There is no logical reason why it should not work in VMWare Fusion, but install in Parallels. (If you're wondering why not just run it in Parallels? This is because Parallels running Win 98 Se very badly (their virtual tools will not install) - the screen is barely readable - not great for a dictionary!)

    Thank you

    The most likely explanation is that C-Dilla is looking for running on a virtual machine and refusing permission on this basis.  You should check your EULA for this software and see if you are in breach of the agreement, if you install the software on a virtual machine.

    There are many ways to check running on a virtual machine.  Under binary translation, the software can detect the truncated segment boundaries that serve to protect the hypervisor of the guest OS.  You can work around this by forcing the merger to use virtualization assisted by material (like Parallels) for that person.  Just add the following to your virtual machine configuration file:

    monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware"

    You must remove this parameter once your installation is complete.  Merge by default binary translation for Windows clients more old both for performance reasons and work around some bugs in guest OS that cannot be circumvented by using hardware-assisted virtualization.

    The copy protection software can also search for the existence of the backdoor, VMware which is not present in the analogies.  You can work around this by limiting access to the back door with the following configuration option:

    monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = "TRUE"

    You must remove this parameter once your installation is complete.  VMware Tools will not be able to run in your guest with this option.

  • VMWare Fusion (trial) vs Parallels (currently own)

    Hello

    I need a virtual machine to run Win ME on my iMac (Leopard 10.5.7) 24 "3.06 ghz with Nvidia Geforce 8800 GS.

    I have win me or Win 98 to run my Oxford English Dictionary CD-ROM 2nd ed. worm. 2 (this isn't any dictionary - cost me about $400 in 2000). That is why only that I have to run a PC! I can just barely run the OED in Parallels. Parallels does not support Win 98 or Win Me. Do not load the virtual tools; the display is only 16 colors... Victoire Me sucks Parallels. BUT at least the OED will work on Parallels (even if in a sad state). I want to buy VMWare because Win Me over like a champ and looks a lot like VMWare Fusion. It all seemed too good to be true that I explored the trial I downloaded VMware. Well, it was too good to be true. VMware, the OED CD-ROM Cdilla Safedisc 1 protection will not allow the data disk must be authenticated.

    Why, why charge Parallels the OED on Win ME without problems of authentication, but VMWare can not? (The OED also worked well on Virtual PC, 4, 5 and 6.)

    If anyone can help get VMware to load my copy legally purchased of the OED, I buy VMWare Fusion in blink of an eye.

    BTW, I'm not the only user of the OED facing this problem. There are others on other forums on the internet who wants to hear that their beloved OED can be run with VMWare without having to buy the new version of the OED. The charge to their former owners of the OED for the new native Mac version of the OED is $ 295. (There is no price upgrade for Mac users because it was not a Mac version of the OED since the beginning of the 1990s. Only Windows versions that are entangled with the atrocious Cdilla Safedisc protection were on the market. Therefore, run the OED on a virtual PC. Yes, Yes, another sad story. )

    Hope that there is no help there. I'm used to my own problems, but I am confused as to why VMWare which seems so much better than Parallels to handling Win ME can not open the OED as painless as Parallels.

    I can't wait to start an arms race, but you can try adding the following to your virtual machine configuration file:

    monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = "TRUE"

    If this does not work, try the following:

    monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware"

    In both cases, you must remove these configuration options once you have completed the installation.
