Patching ESXi 4.0

I did not vCenter and I would like to patch a new server ESXi 4.0 (free license). What is the process? I see messages about the host update utility and I do not have this option. Can someone enlighten us? I used to use vCenter back in my old job. I try to get a proof of concept with all the free stuff.

The vCLI is a separate download.  It is available for windows, linux, or as appliance VM linux bundle called the vMA.  You can download it here - http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vcli/.   Here is an example for the execution of the command - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/esx_3i_rcli/vihostupdate.php.

    Hello

Moving the unit via the technology Vmware is perfectly fine.

The message/warning you receive is just to warn you that this VM is a critic and you must be careful. The same message if you invoke the power out of this machine.

  • 15/10/2014 patches ESXi break Citrix Netscaler VPX Appliance

    The part warning, part question...

My ESXi hosts were v5.5.0 206190 (directly from the 5.5U2 cd - RollupISO2), I applied the following hotfixes:

ID: ESXi550-201410101-SG Impact: Important release date: 2014-10-15 products: embeddedEsx 5.5.0 update esx-base

ID: ESXi550-201410406-BG Impact: Important release date: 2014-10-15 products: embeddedEsx 5.5.0 update net-vmxnet3

    subsequently they were 2143827 v5.5.0

Once updated my Citrix Netscaler VPX devices 2 (vmware hardware 8, Citrix Netscaler OS v10.5.52.11nc (latest), FreeBSD 64 bit, E1000 Nic) has stopped responding on the network. They work very well when it is on the old version 5.5U2 but starts to drop packets intermittently and then finally deposited the network during the migration to a host that has the patches listed above. I have 2 mode high availability, this happens even if only one is enabled and the other offshore. It goes back to normal when back to host pre patched vmotioned.

I have tried switching networks, remove and add network, upgrade to 10 hardware cards, removing all together and deploy the latest version of the citrix website, if it fall not all together, he will drop a lot of packages. You can watch the netscaler console display events NŒUD FAIL, NŒUD down and NŒUD up to several times per minute.

    DIFFICULTY (or work around)?

    Hi all

When you work with VMWare Technical support they foud a solution that works for me almost an hour now.

Maybe you guys can 'test' this solution too?

Enter the shell in the NetScaler mode, then:

    (1) find location loader.conf on NetScaler VM #find /-name loader.conf

For the VM NetScaler downloaded, there are 2 loader.conf:./flash/boot/defaults/loader.conf and. / flash/boot/loader.conf, we only need to change one.

    (2) add "hw.em.txd = 512" in loader.conf, this will change the Tx ring size to 512 (Note: do not set the size of the ring to 256, it will cause the NetScaler VM core dump)

    (3) restart the NetScaler VM

    4) migrate to a host with the latest patches

    Good luck...

Edit: still works fine, also with userload in production environment

  • Patching ESXi 5.1 U1 U2-> custom VIBs

    Hi guys,.

I have an ESXi host I plan to patch. Patching of hosts in the past never gave me trouble, but this host is different because I'm under additional VIBs thereon (LSI PMI provider for example).

If I use the following command:

    • software esxcli vib install /vmfs/volumes/datastoreNameHere/fileNameHere.zip d

My custom VIBs will disappear when the hotfix is applied?

    Thank you!

The installation of a lot of patches will replace the vibs included in the package, so if there are additional vibs will not be affected. In any case, what you can do to do this is to run the command with the -dry - run option to find out what will be changed. Other use install , you can also run the command esxcli with Update replacing vibs that have been updated.

  • Cannot start the unique virtual machine after you have patched ESXi to 4.1.0 800830

I patched a standalone ESXi host yesterday, leading a successful ESXi 4.1.0 800830 upgrade.

The majority of my virtual machines started very well but it fails to start with the following error (as the specified file does not exist (?)). As I've not met it before, and I'm running out of time, anyone would offer nuggets of wisdom while I continue to trawl the web / these forums for a response?

Can you browse the data store where is stored the than VM and check what files you see in the directory for this virtual machine? The error claimed that it cannot find a file of virtual disk for this virtual machine.

  • patching esxi hosts

We have esxi4.1 build 260247 on 3 hosts.

What is the way of easieast patch guests. I've heard of the ESXI Setup utility and use it to make backups of my hosts configs, but never used for updates.

I am looking for the way faster and easier to do.

    Advice would be appreciated.

Update Manager is on the vCenter Server installation DVD/ISO.

You have a shared storage? If not, you cannot update the host on which vCenter Server works with the Update Manager.

  • How to uninstall patches - ESXi embedded 4.0

We have a couple of new guests that have been patched via Update Manager dynamic base, and now they are 'before' other hosts in the cluster (and not playing not very well).  We are planning a 4.1 update and don't want to patch the rest of the hosts (existing and stable) for the dynamic reference level.  I have created a fixed baseline containing patches on the existing host computers and that you want to uninstall the dynamic reference plots & repatch at fixed reference level.

My question is, how to uninstall individual patches?  The vihostupdate command will remove the extensions but not ESXi patches I've been Googling for hours and came up empty.

    Thank you.

  • Patching ESXi 4.1 installed with custom image

    Hello

Our company has several ESXi 4.x - hosts installed with HP or DELL-customized images.

If I install the patches with VUM without doing something more, simply by using the patches automatically downloaded VMware, they then somehow will overwrite the DELL/HP-installation custom ESXi? (Leaving me with a fully functioning but the host not custom).

Or are the standard VMware patches without affecting the part 'tailor-made' installation?

    Concerning

    Matthias

The patches that you apply do not overwrite OEM customizations.

    http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/ESXi_management.pdf :

The basic hypervisor code can also contain custom code provided by suppliers of servers (OEM) that provides additional features, such as monitoring and hardware support information. These customizations would be present, for example, if had ESXi embedded format of the manufacturer of the server or a customized version of ESXi has been installed on

the hard drive. Any update to an existing installation of ESXi integrates automatically the correct update of this custom code.

  • Measurement of the integrated patch ESXi 4-U1

I'm trying to patch 3 hosts embedded ESXi 4 (181792, 208167) to U1, but I have a lot of problems.

For the host update utility Vmware is the log:

    Patch 10.0.2.202

Start downloading files to the host

Metadata and binary files have been downloaded successfully

    Analysis of the completed host

    Begin the installation of patches

Installation of patches on 10.0.2.202: ESXi400-Update01

and then stops for hours at 45%.

Via the Update Manager, it just stops after staging patches on hosts.

I tried to wait for 2 hours, but it cannot continue. A restart of the host to run again with the old version.

I have only esxi embedded on hp (proliant dl385 and dl360) hardware. I read about the problem with hp agents of the sm, but she says it is not for esxi.

Is there another way to update?

    Where is my fault?

    Thank you.

You have a configured scratch location? If you do not have local storage of ESXi uses/tmp/scratch / that's a virtual disk. If you have configured, use the configuration tab / software / advanced / ScratchConfig to set up a permanent storage.

  • Procedure of patching ESXi 4

    Hi all

Question about patching: I just ran the update utility host, which indicates that there are some patches available for my guests - should I suspend guests and put the hosts in maintenance mode before to patch?  In addition, these hosts are 4.0 - is update patch utility knocking the hosts to 4.1 or who is a quite different update process?

    Thank you very much.

You can see all the methods of upgrade in http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_upgrade_guide.pdf

the easy way is to download the patch to upgrade from ESXi4.0 to ESXi4.1 update 1 to

    http://downloads.VMware.com/d/info/datacenter_downloads/vmware_vsphere_hypervisor_esxi/4

put the server in maintenance mode and run this patch via ssh.

  • Patching VMware ESXi

So, I recently discovered that my VMware ESXi running ESXi 5.5.0 version 1331820 build number (ESXi 5.5.0 GA). Now, I know that there are a few fixes that have been released, ESXi550-201410001 is the most recent, because as far as I know. It would be convenient to patch, also if this is the case, can I just go what version I am now, download the recent patch and install directly, or is there a few required required fixes before. Active and important virtual machines running on hosts that I would be "patching" it may be closed, but it would be really bad if the patch to cause problems for causing problems for VMS host.

I'm new to this, as I have never "patched" before ESXi. I guess I can use this (KB VMware: installation of patches on an ESXi host from the command-line 5.x ) as the documentation on how to install those.

    Thanks in advance!

Yes, the ESXi patches are cumulative.

Please read this blog post from VMware:are cumulative patches ESXi | VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs

Another good blog post about it:VMware experience before: are some cumulative patches 5.x ESXi?

  • Question of ESXi 5.5 software patches.

VMware so today released the next 2 patches esxi 5.5:

    201404001

    201404020

The 4020 seems just the fix openssl, so the 4001 seems to have the difficulty of openssl, and a few others.

I'm curious because I applied the first (4001) the lowest construction and restarted her. As soon as the 4020 (vib esxcli software update), he said nothing was to be corrected all vibs has been omitted.

Why vmware out 2 patches like that? It seems strange to me, because if I wanted only the openssl patch, it seems that I'm getting on a higher number of construction, if I wanted the openssl patch and other patches.

    A little confused.

Please take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2076665 , which explains why there are two patches and it is recommended to be used, based on the current construction of the installed.
