PE2950, virtualization and VMware ESX 3.5.2 technology bios setting

I PE2950 with VMware ESX server 3.5.2 is installed.

The activation of the "Virtualization Technology" BIOS setting (under information CPU) will cause problems with the operating system? (it was disabled when installing ESX on it – default setting)

    Could someone install ESX 4 on an ASUS P5E WS Professional motherboard model? I tried to get a clean work install but no luck. I use RAID to recognize 2 partitions. If you have been able to get a clean install, please let me know.

    Thank you

    I hold at this stage to ESXi 4.1... Since there will be another version of ESX go ahead (4.1 is the final version) you might as well get on ESXi now. In addition, there is no ESX, ESXi upgrade path. So if you want to install the next version (assuming that you can get the equipment to work for the next version), you will need to perform a complete reinstallation.

    You could also install ESXi 4.1 on a USB flash drive to avoid the hard drive problems (where lives of ESXi) on your installation. I managed to install ESXi 4.1 on 4 GB SanDisk Cruzer flash drive (model SDZC6-4096). I installed ESXi 4.0 on a 2GB SanDisk Cruzer Titanium (SDCZ3-2048) flash drive. More recent variants same lines should give good results. You can get the latest version (SDCZ36 - 004G - A11) 4 GB disk for<$10 on="" newegg...="" i="" would="" avoid="" using="" cheap="" branded,="" or="" non-major="" branded,="" flash="" drives="" (kingston,="" crucial,="" corsair,="" lexar="" are="" good).="" i="" would="" also="" go="" with="" their="" high="" performance="" models,="" to="" ensure="" that="" you're="" not="" setting="" yourself="" up="" for="">

  • Mix of ESX 3.5 and VMware ESX in the same cluster

    Hello

    I'm currently involved in ESX 3.5 Migrating virtual machines to a new vSphere environment.  All ESX 3.5 hosts running on obsolete kit and will be decomm had at the end of the project.  All hosts are managed by the same server vCenter.

    The only problem is, I have to add an additional ESX4 server, but there is not enough available physical switch ports.  I have decomm one ESX3.5 servers in order to free ports, but they run at 2 knots, and I will lose redundancy if a hardware problem arises.

    My proposed Solution: -.

    I think decomming ESX3.5 host 1 and move it to the new vSphere cluster.  The type of brand/model/CPU is different between the old and the new servers and I am not concerned by VMs DRS'ing between 2 environments, however, I understand that I have would be protected by HA if anything disastrous happened.  All hosts are connected to the same storage.

    You don't see any problem with that?

    You can have a mixed cluster, but this must be managed by vCenter 4.x.

    And you also need a license for the former hosts of 3.x server.

    HA will work.

    If the CPU is compatible VCA, then as VMotion, DRS, VCA will work.

  • Licenses of Microsoft and VMware data center

    Hello

    You have a question regarding Microsoft Licensing and VMware ESX hosts.

    We have a Microsoft School Agreement and a lot of our windows servers are running standard edition. One is business running. All about the physical servers.

    We are virtualizing some of our Windows servers and schools prices are very favourable if we buy a license of data center. Its about £70 and it means that we can run an unlimited number of Microsoft server VM in VMware. relation to the enterprise which is only £5 cheaper, but only allows you to run a maximum of 4 people.

    Question, I realized that a Windows license for data center would be per processor, so if I have 2 physical processorsin each esx host, I need to get 2 X Datacenter license per ESX host, is - that correct?

    If I bought 6 data center licenses (3 ESX host with 2 physical processors in each), what version of Windows server can be used, I understand his only standard or Premium, can anyone confirm this? It also covers Windows XP?

    Thank you

    > Question, I realized that a Windows license for data center would be per processor, so if I have 2 physical processorsin each esx host, I need to get 2 X Datacenter license per ESX host, is - that correct?

    Fix.

    License from Microsoft Windows Server 2008 to run with Virtualization Technologies

    Page 13:

    Instead of license servers with enough licenses Windows Server 2008 Standard to satisfy the greatest number of simultaneously running instances of Windows Server, the processors in servers could be allowed with Windows Server 2008, Datacenter Edition. This would allow an unlimited number of instances of Windows Virtual Server to run simultaneously in operating systems. Because the servers have two processors, two licenses of Windows Server 2008, Datacenter Edition for each server should be. Licenses of Windows Server 2008, Datacenter Edition provides the flexibility to move instances of Windows Server without concern to maintain the license compliance.

    > If I bought 6 data center licenses (3 ESX host with 2 physical processors in each), what version of Windows server can be used, I understand his only standard or Premium, can anyone confirm this? It also covers Windows XP?

    Anton is correct - Datacenter license covers only the OS Server.

  • ESX and VMware scripting Backend process...

    Hi all

    I look forward to hearing the internal processes that continue on the street within the ESX Server. For example:-that the ESX actually did when the user fires rescan command esxcfg-rescan & lt; vmhba. & gt;. Is there any script is triggered on commanded this shooting? and even on the backend to another ESX processes orders too. I want to update my self on these things. Hope someone here could give me a helping hand.

    Concerning

    MRM

    If you are interested about how ESX (i) and some of the inner workings, you should take a look at some of the documents/charts architecture, this is available on VMworld if you have an account, and the majority of it should be free of previous years, less the recent VMworld Europe / U.S..

    Here is another good site for a collection of documents to help: http://vsphere-land.com/top-10-list/top-10-list-index.html

    If you are only interested in some of the esxcfg-* commands, a good way to learn what it is doing and the parts of the system it touches is to download the vCLI/RCLI: http://engineering.ucsb.edu/~duonglt/vmware/#vmware_rcli

    These commands are similar to that of those on the classic ESX which are used to manage/configure remote both ESX(I) hosts and they use the VI API http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vc-sdk/visdk25pubs/ReferenceGuide/index.html

    You can open each of these scripts and get a good understanding, most of the classic esxcfg-* commands are compiled binaries which makes internal calls to the system, but some are normal Perl/bash scripts such as esxcfg-rescan or vmware-cmd and you can open these and take a look at what he does.

    So it really depends on what you're trying to understand and explain how you want to enter.

    I hope that gives you an idea of where to go.

  • VMware ESX 3.5 and disabling carrots

    Hi all

    We have a Cluster ESX from VMware ESX 3.5 U3 that was built for a specific product that has a licensing model that doesn't fit well with the virtual server running model.

    The basis of this cluster is 3 x BL465c G1 Dual Core servers HP with 16 GB of memory each. We're going to run out of memory, and I can't add memory without add because of the architecture of AMD processors.

    Adding more CPU will have a big impact on licensing costs - once again not the licenses of VMware.

    I want to do is add a second processor DC and then use BIOS to disable half of the cores in each processor.  This will allow me to add an extra 16 GB memory per server and stay within the limits of the license.

    My question - has anyone with disabilities hearts on a host ESX from VMware, specifically after ESX has been installed. All that needs to be done?

    I tested the disabling function of carrots on a Windows Server and who did replace the drivers, I was wondering if VMware ESX should similar updates / management.

    Rob of TIA.

    You'll be fine, apart from the fact that, by adding the Jepp second you will need an additional CPU, per ESX host licensing doesn't mind.

  • Virtualization and hardware Protection keys

    I have a few dongles with license keys that are supposed to be used for various applications within the virtual infrastructure.  If the goal is 100% virtualization in a multi-tenant environment, how can I move that and always allow these applications to access their dongle?  I don't want to paste material usb devices anywhere in the data center.  All the world is facing this problem?

    Hello

    Unless you have a compensation control aka physical security, such as a locked cupboard with limited access to the keys, then take the USB over IP is a security zone not reliable as such should be separated from the rest of your network. You can use VLANs, or you can use a firewall. Anyway you need a way to ensure that the only thing on the USB network devices USB from a set specific IP address, and specific to a set of devices. a mix of physical and virtual security is needed here.

    I'm looking to set up a Plan for continuity of the business using Vmware ESX. I would like to install an outside site that will duplicate a few key servers. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can do this with ESX? Is it as simple as pushing Server snapshots to the offsite location? Any ideas...

    Thank you

    Scott

    Hello

    Welcome to the forums.

    One thing to know is that a snapshot in terms of "VMware" is not a full copy of the disc, it is a file that contains the changes to the drive block since the snapshot was created. Snapshots of assistance in making backups of virtual machines running, but allowing the basic disk to copy while the data is written to the snapshot. Then, you're the snapshot.

    So how do DR/BC is having a good backup strategy using one of the available backup/replication tools.

    There are:

    Veeam Backup w/replication

    Vizioncore vRanger backup and vReplicator for replication connection

    EsXpress doctorate for backup (restorations of use for replication)

    There is also some SRM if your San is supported, etc.

    So there are a lot of options the question is how 'real time' you need the data. You could also use the replication SAN, Double Take, etc.

  • AIX, HP - UX, Solaris running under VMware ESX

    Is it possible to run any flavor of Unix under VMware operating system at the server level? I know Linux is able to, but it is if Unix is possible. If this is not the case, is there any intention to do so in any future project. Thank you.

    Alan.

    Hello

    If Tom said there are ways to sort of make a difference...

    Solaris x 86-> Yes

    Solaris Sparc-> Yes if you use transitive

    IRIX-> No. (not x 86)

    AIX-> No. (not x 86)

    OSF/Tru64 Unix-> No. (not x 86)

    HP - UX-> No. (not x 86) but they have the software of HP Integrity (Itanium) Virtual Machine

    OpenVMS-> No. (not x 86)

    BSDi-> not really (if you can find something with SCSI support)

    FreeBSD-> Yes

    OpenBSD-> Yes

    Ultrix-> No. (not x 86)

    UnixWare-> not really (if you can find something with SCSI support)

    SCO-> not really (if you can find something with SCSI support)

    So, for running a Unix as a VM, UNIX must support x 86 hardware (or something to translate x 86) and if you want it run in ESX UNIX must support SCSI LSI or BUSlogic SCSI adapters. For workstation IDE may work. In addition, it must support the ethernet as well AMD PCNET32 device.

    Hello

    did anyone of you using HP EVA Business copy (snapshots SAN) with VMware?

    Yes, people use it.

    What happens if you create a snapshot of a VMFS LUNS?

    You make a consistent copy of the crash of all the data on this LUN. Check if VMware SRM will work with Business Copy to make the best copies.

    Present you this snapshot to the ESX' are?

    Yes.

    > Do you need tuning to get this working? I think San resignaturing and allowing snapshots of SAN...

    Yes, you need to authorize instant SAN, etc.

    Or is it better to only instant RDM LUN? Which will work? Introduce an instant LUN to a virtual machine?

    6 of these half dozen of those. Yes, you can provide a snapshot of the RDM to a virtual machine.

    Best practices on this usage?

    Treat Business Copy in the same way you use any mirror of SAN LUN/snapshot.
