PERC 4/Di in Poweredge 1900?

Hello

You can use the PERC 4/Di from a PowerEdge 2600 server in a PowerEdge 1900 or it is not compatible?

Thank you.

No, the PERC 4/Di is a built-in controller (RAID logic is on the motherboard) and is activated by the RAID key (otherwise, it's just a SCSI disk controller). The 1900 doesn't have the built-in ability to take a key or manage the RAID. You need a card. Get the PERC 6 / i.

If you're talking about the PERC 4/DC (which is a card), it can work, but I still wouldn't use it.

  • PowerEdge 1900 & WS2012r2

    Gents

I decided to migrate my old WHS2011 about her inherited PowerEdge 1900.

I have 10 SATA drives to transfer (sizes 1 to - 4TB). I started by moving the 3 x 2 TB SATA B, C & D Port drives so that they know. SATA is occupied by the SSD.

Now, everything went sooth (hardware wise) all disks are recognized, to 3 x 2 disks are added to WS2012r2 Essentials Poll.

I started the migration of data to free the other drives which I hope for you connect to Perc 5 and other PCIe SATA card, but what I've noticed, it's as writing speeds (when moving data on GBit NIC) 33.5 MB/s with occasional spikes 67.4 MB/s.

I think it's because one of the SATA Ports (B, C or D) is ATA and limited at 33 Mbps. unfortunately I am struggling to find info on this.

Someone knows the speed of the built-in SATA ports? or how to improve transfer speeds?

As mentioned, I have some readers go so behalf of all ports.

    Thank you

    Daniel

You are right. the bottleneck is not caused by SATA.

I forgot to mention that the pool, I created the WS2012r2E using parity as a measure of redundancy. Apparently, the parity is to blame for low writing speeds - problem applicable only to the Scriptures known. Readings are fine.

  • PowerEdge 1900 and Poweredge 840 and NO hardware RAID SATA HD, FreeNAS with ZFS

I searched these forums and the web in general a concise my questions answer, but nothing is done.  I just happen to find someone who is using 'old' technology and it retarget as much as you might think (I am a broke student by the way).

I bought a Poweredge 1900 Server & server Poweredge 840 ebay about last year.  I've been busy and have yet to work with these two units.  I wanted to use the PE 1900 as a file server and then push a backup of these files on the server off site, the PE840.  I intended to buy four 1 TB or four disks SATA 2 to (WD Black or RED WD) for each system, respectively.

I've been through a few videos on youtube the other day and discovered FreeNAS.  This seems to be a much better solution than the use of Ubuntu Server, but it also made me think about the hardware Raid with these systems.  If FreeNAS uses ZFS (software raid controller), you want to avoid a hardware raid controller.

My current assumptions, please correct me if I'm wrong on any of the following:

I think that each of these systems to support drives up to 2 TB?, I think that I can use the SATA drives and not SAS, four discs in each system drives.

I believe that I can boot from USB flash drive (a quick, which I intend to install FreeNAS on which they recommend)

I think I can connect readers to the Perc/Raid Controller controller (& just turn 'off' RAID), or simply directly on the motherboard.  (What woud be the advantages/disadvantages of the use of the card or simply by using the Council)

I intend on working with what I have right now (cheap and available), then once I get this configuration work that I take it out of the sand/lab sandbox, upgrade the processors and ram up my budget will allow and go live with the installation program (if it is still possible)

From now on, they are sitting in a corner, begging to consume energy, and fans of polute the soundscape with their cries (PE1900 precisely).  I know that I could pursue other options but I already these two units.

I really want to utilze FreeNAS its serving capacity file and ZFS for its reliability.  Is it possible with this camera?, or should I junk them and move on?

    Thank you for your answer!

I've done some research more and since FreeNAS is built off of FreeBSD supported hardware is the same.  I couldn't find a list for FreeNAS specifically so I looked to FreeBSD.  I was still confused about the material and decided to go forward with the poweredge 840, for two reaasons, there already 8 GB of ram and it is not as heavy to move on (from 1900). I shoot the raid controller (for simplicity) and I plugged in three 250 GB SATA drives and a 40 GB SSD.  I had to set the bios for the usb key is recognized and also due to adapt to be considered as a hard drive, then had to define the sequence of boot to the usb drive, acting as a hard drive.  Once all that has been said and done, I wrote my FreeNAS image on my USB and booted up.

It took maybe 10 minutes and I was up and running (once I had configured the hardware and bios), I created a RaidZ (as proposed FreeNAS) and with my three 250 GB drives, it produced 453 GB of usable disk space.  The 40 GB SSD is used as L2ARC (from my cache of understanding), I tried the installer with and without the 40 GB SSD.  The difference was impressive, just opening the photos or streaming video on my laptop Win 8.1 (Dell 17r) is almost flawless, as if the files were stored locally.

I was impressed by how quick and easy to use FreeNAS, simple and fast network shares can be configured with permissions that works quite simply not in less than 5 minutes.  I don't have Windows Server down, but generally configuration active directory takes a little more effort.

I am satisfied for the moment and continues to experiment with the Poweredge 840 until I commit to a processor upgrade.  Once I acquire 16 GB memory for my Poweredge 1900 I will perform with her, as it has only 1 GB now, crazy.

    Thank you for your help.

  • adding larger disks for poweredge 1900

This server has perc5 and 3 hd for a total of 208123 MB.  We would like to add hard drives, but not sure if we can.  Is it possible to replace the existing 2 and add another without losing any data. or just add a 4th?  We are limited with perc5 according to a specific size of the drive?  Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

The maximum size of physical disk that the PERC 5 can take is 2 TB.

To enlarge your RAID 5, you can add disks to it - for example, you can convert your 3-drive RAID 5 for a 4 - or 5-disk RAID 5 for the extra space.

If you replace the existing disks with adults, allowing everyone to rebuild, you'll have a VD (virtual disk - table) that is the same size as the original - you cannot develop a RAID like this on PERC.  If you replace a disc each (and all) with a larger, the only thing you will be able to do with the extra space is to create a second VD on disks.  This will be considered by the operating system as a new/entity 'disc' to use for storage.  Keep in mind that the size of your RAID 5, you're probably using 73 GB SAS drives, you can not mix disks SAS and SATA in the same Bay, so if you decide to replace the disks with the biggest, they MUST be SAS, SATA disks not.

You can also add multiple disks - of any size, SAS or SATA - to your server and configure as a new/VD/array to use for storage.

  • PERC 6 / I in PowerEdge T610

Is the maximum size of the disks SAS 2 terabytes and is there a solution to install 4 terabyte drives?

    Hello

Yes, the maximum supported disk size is 2 TB. No, there is no 'solution '. This is a limitation of the hardware.

You can create stencils more RAID 2 TB on the controller, but the controller cannot process more than 2 TB on a disc. If you are installing a drive over 2 TB it works but only use 2 TB of disk or does not at all.

  • PowerEdge 1900 onboard SATA issues

I try to get the sata integrated to work.

I go into the bios and put the 4 sata slots to the automobile. Press to save the changes and reboot.
Then it restarts and I go back into the bios and it's back to OFF.

I am trying to add a purple WD 1 TB drive and a 40 GB Intel SSD.

Could update BIOS to 2.7 to work?
I already wiped out the old OS, so there is currently no OS on the disks.

    DemonMaestro,

The first thing I would check is if the integrated Sata controller is enabled. If you go into the BIOS - embedded devices - check then under Embedded SATA if it is set to OFF. If so, then go to ATA Mode.

Table 2-4 on page 38 of this manual will show the selections.

Let me know how it goes.
