performance tracking tools: esxtop, vmkusage, VSphere Client,...

I have been reading some old discussions Forum and white books and am confused about performance monitoring tools are always available or useful under VSphere V4.

  • ESXTOP: seems to be always available.  But are "Interpreting statistical esxtop" and "Using esxtop to troubleshoot problems" v2 days still valid?

  • vmkusage: this tool is still used or available?

  • are the graphics available in the VSphere Client and VCenter modern versions of these?

  • the ESX Server MUI exist anymore?  (referenced in "Comparing the MUI, VirtualCenter and vmkusage")

  • the main square more on performance monitors Appendix A, in the Guide to management of resources?

Thanks for all the pointers... Lyle

(1) for esxtop Yes it is valid and this link gives you a good tutorial. you look only in esxtop/resxtop when there is a performance http://www.yellow-bricks.com/esxtop/ problem

(2) vmkusage is back from vcenter 2.5 update 4. It does not appear as performance under vsphere client tab.

(3) MUI would be replaced as vcenter web app, but there is nothing much to be seen here

all and all it's graphics performance for the vsphere client and esxtop for performance troubleshooting on my side. There are modern as vcenter operations tools if you are interested.

  • How to generate more than one hour performance statistics in vSphere Client 4.0?

We have installed a trial version of vSphere ESX 4.0 (on processor Intel 8 with Fedora Core 12) and vSphere Client (on Windows Vista 32-bit) and that it provides only 1 hour of performance statistics.  Then apply a license valid, it still generates only 1 hour from CPU graphics and logs.  Does anyone else have this problem?

Performance logs are exported from vSphere Client by either: a)-> report file-> performance (recorded as file .xls for all virtual machines from the host), or b) right-click on the individual VM-> report Performance... (for the individual VM).  Whatever it is, will appear .xls files contains only statistics of CPU, memory, storage, network and disk of the last hour.

In addition, the "Graphics Options" in the performance tab will not let you change the interval of time either, although there are options for the 'end '.  They are disabled. Please see screenshot.

    Help, please.  Thank you!

  • Historical performance in vSphere Client data?

    Hello

I use ESXi essential 5.1 as operating system host and vSphere Client 5.1 for the host administration. Real, I need to explore historical performance data.

For historical data, I tried to follow this KB article . The problem is, I can't find him described configuration of "Advanced" tab/button

Where can I find it or how to get the data on historical performance on the performance tab in the vSphere Client?

Thanks in advance and best regards!

What is your level of statistics on? I suspect it's only level 1 and therefore do not collect all counters. Increase to the desired level (I use level 3), but take note that this affects the performance and the size of the database.

  • Problems with virtual center/vsphere client

    Hello

We use Vsphere client 4.0.0 build 208111 with Virtual Center Server version and same build.

    I have 2 problems:

    1. I have a virtual machine with only one disc that is shown on 2 different data stores. If I look through the models and virtual computers, I see only 1 vm. If I look through the data warehouse screen, I see it in the store data-002 and 003-store data. If I go to the settings of the virtual machine on the datastore-002 and check the disk, I see the path in the store of data-003.

    How can I fix?

    2. I turned on a windows 2003 vm. I couldn't close it via customer vpshere because the status of VM Tools showed not running. When I logged in the system, he showed OK and then I could close by the customer.

Do I always login for virtual machine tools to perform?

    Thank you

    Haim defending

This virtual machine has a CD / ISO mounted?  What happens if you click edit setting on the virtual machine, that says the file of the disk?

Also, go to the service console and watching a .vmx file, it should say something like

    scsi0:1.fileName = "servername.vmdk"

Then look at the hard, it should point to something like

     VMFS "servername-flat.vmdk"

  • Very slow access to data on HP MIcroserver Gen8 warehouses. Can not change the system of booking resources with vSphere client.

I did a clean install of ESXi 6 with HP supplied image (ESXi-6.0.0-2494585-HP-600.9.1.39-Mar2015).
Access to and from the warehouses of data over network via vSphere Client (6.0.0 - 2502222) is very slow - ~ 10 Mbps (there are several hundred under ESXi 5.5)
I suspect that ESXi 6 limited CPU resources used by the host to 230 MHz system.
I can't change the settings 'System Resource Reservation"(unlike ESXi 5.5, where I can change and switch to Simple or advanced mode).

    Hey ArnisR,

I finally found the problem. In the last 5.5 ESXi and version 6.0, they replaced the driver hpvsa (HP ISO vSphere!). With these drivers, I have known major problems with banks of data and, therefore, the controller B120i (RAID) of the Gen8 MicroServer HP.

    The problem is caused by the last (HP) ISO (from March);

    -Mar2015.iso 5.5.0 - Update2-2403361-HP - 550.9.2.27 VMware ESXi

    -Mar2015.iso 6.0.0 - 2494585-HP - 600.9.1.39 VMware ESXi

I found out (because I had an older ISO), the ISO VMware ESXi 5.5.0-Update2-2068190-HP-5.77.3-Nov2014.iso works well! With this ISO standard, all performance issues disappeared.

The difference between the ISO is as follows. The former ISO contains the driver of storage scsi-hpvsa 5.5.0 - 88OEM. ISO (s) of March come with new storage driver scsi-hpvsa 5.5.0 - 92OEM or scsi hpvsa - 5.5.0 - 90. These drivers are the cause of the problems in the controller of B120i!

Installing ESXi 5.5 or 6 since last ISOs, you must manually install the old driver of storage (SCSI hpvsa - 5.5.0 - 88). I tested with the HPSA file scsi vib - 5.5.0 - 88OEM.550.0.0.1331820.x86_64.vib. Then I adjusted the ISO HP and equipped with the old driver. Now I can install ESXi 5.5 or 6 ISO (custom) of HP, which includes the former driver.

    I hope this helps!

  • vcops presents in vSphere client but not in vSphere Web Client

Question for you.  I just installed vCOPs for demo in our environment, and I'm having a problem seen in the web client.  I am able to see it in real vSphere Client with all registered vcenters, but this isn't the best way to use the tool.  I use Chrome verstion 34.0.1847.116.  I also tried in IE.

By using the web client of vSphere vCOPS isn't built the way but he is in the thick client.  In the client heavy, you have a plug-in, that you click and it basically gives you the web console window in a tab.  There is nothing like this for the Web Client.  If you click on an object, you can see the health of this object and so forth.  If you want to watch as you see in the thick client but you will need to connect to the user interface for vCOPS self https://vcops-ip/vcops-vspheremeaning.  Or if you look on the homepage of the web client, you can see under surveillance, you see the vCOPS icon and which will bring you to the login page.

  • Saving a vCenter Server in vSphere Client Web (5.5)

    Hello

I was wondering if it is possible to save multiple vCenter servers (all vCenter Server devices) with a single instance of vSphere Web Client that runs on one of these devices to vCenter?

VCSA1 > use built in Web Client to manage all vCenter servers.

    VCSA2 > register with VCSA1.

    VCSA3 > register with VCSA1.

I find no 5.5 specific information but what I've read I think it's possible on 5.1. The ' admin - cmd.sh' script does not seem to be present in my 5.5 VCSA however.

    VSphere Documentation Centre

The Server system, a device to vCenter Server vCenter is pre-recorded with the vSphere Client Web inside the unit. To register for another system of vCenter Server with the vSphere Client Web installed as part of a vCenter Server Appliance, you must use the admin-app script from the command line rather than the Web-based administration tool.

The admin app is no longer available with vCenter 5.5. If you register all the vCSA to a SSo central, they will all see the place in the web client unique management this SSO Server vCenter.

  • Cannot save orchestrator in vsphere client of web (v5.5)

    Hello

We have difficulties registration orchestrator to use in the web client.  Control https://**server-ip**/mob shows that it is registered as an extension and that heart rate were received recently.  However, even after a reboot of the vcenter server services and services of orchestrator, logging out and back in the vsphere client, try to save it manually in the web client, etc is not always appearing.

When you try to save it manually, what format should be used?  We tried several methods

    1. https://FQDN:8281

    2 https://FQDN:8281 / api

    3. COMPLETE DOMAIN NAME

    4 FQDN:8281

    5. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

    6 https://IP

    7 https://IP:8281

    8 https://IP:8281 / api

All of these methods give a negative result.

Also, even if SINGLE sign-on is configured, and perform a connection test using configuration orchestrator web page succeeds, we are unable to log into the customer orchestrator!  It indicates that the user is not allowed, even if it's the same user specified in the orchestrator as administrator of the active directory configuration.  Just in case this might help, we use MS SQL Server Enterprise 2012 for the two vcenter orchestrator and.  In order to ensure that orchestrator db was fully complient, we duplicated the DB original vcenter then creates a user in the connection to the db vco and populated SQL tables.  The reported configuration wizard success.  (Note we also tried it with a fresh database and let orcestrator populate tables - which was also successful, but we still had the same problems with integration and customer sign; so to maximize compatibility, in case the db does not have the necessary objects, we have reproduced the vcenter db... the reason for this wsa as orchestrator can use the vcenter server db if installed in "easy" mode)

We have searched communities and found many people with the same problem, but none of the cases that we found was actually marked "resolved."

Could someone help us please with it?  Although version 5.5. impressive regarding the progress made and new features, etc., it has been an absolute nightmare of application.  I hope that VMware is working on fixes of bugs because if we had it to do over again, we would stay with version 5.1 for awhile.

Thanks in advance for your help.  If anyone has had problems with the installation of version 5.5 (fees or upgrade), we can help... just ask me.  At our facility, we had about 6 or 7 different issues to which we have documented resolutions (most are easy to solve, but in a production environment, no downtime is not good!

    Sincerely.

Solved!  After the suggestions from you, I had a hunch and checked the file 'vco.properties'... then noticed something strange.  Here is the content of the file

    CHOSEN_INSTALL_SET = CS

    IS_URL =https://our.domain.com:10443 /

    SSO_DISABLED = 0

Notice the line "BOLD", VC_LogOn_User_Name, went to the administrator.  Change that to administrator@{ourdomain.com} and restarting the server orchestrator, then logging on and in the web interface of vcenter server resolved the problem and the server of the vco appeared!

So if anyone has the issue where it won't register in the web client, check the server.properties file in {orchestrator_install_root} and make sure the log the user name is correct for your environment!

    Thanks to those who helped!

  • Unable to connect to new ESXi 5.5 with vSphere Client hosts

Completed the new installation of ESXi 5.5 on two new Dell PowerEdge servers last night.

Trying to connect to them through the vSphere client fails.

I can ping both servers without any problems from the server where the vSphere client is installed (it is not a domain controller but a Windows 2003 server - it has not .net 3.5 SP1 is installed).

If I try to open the IP address of the host in a web browser http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx expires, however, if I try http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:902 It connects to the server, but rather than get the web page, I'm used to waiting with 5.1 I get this message:

"220 VMware authentication daemon Version 1.10: required SSL, ServerDaemonProtocol:SOAP, MKSDisplayProtocol:VNC, VMXARGS taken in charge, taken NFCSSL in charge." I get this exact message even though I have telnet to port 902.  So I know that I can speak to the host, but have no idea why I can't connect to it or they have the tools to display in a web browser. »

Try to use the same IP address with port 902 in the vSphere client to connect, I get this error:

vSphere Client could not connect to "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx".

A unknown connection error has occurred. (The client received an invalid response from the server. (The server committed a protocol violation. Article = ResponseStatusLine))

I noticed that there was a lag of 2 hours and 4 minutes between the host server and the client's server.  I have reset the time to match up in the BIOS of the host server.  The test gave the same results.

Probably unrelated, but throw it out there in case it points to an answer, when executing the "Test management network", ping passes to the default gateway and the DNS server secondary (which is Google 8.8.8.8) but fails for the main DNS (local IP) server and host name resolution is faulty.

Ideas, help or solution would be much appreciated.  I need to get the network to this customer virtualized this week, and I would prefer not to have to go back to 5.1 if possible.

    Thank you

    This is resolved.

And it's one of those things that you just kick yourself for.

I tried this on two servers, Server 2003 and using IE8

Installed Chrome on the two Server 2003 servers and worked perfectly.

So in the end it was IE8 that was not compatible and all the problems at the origin!

Thanks again to you Andrew for trying to help!

I have a number of active hosts VMWare ESXi 5 I manage, but since yesterday I encounter the above error.

On a new server, I installed ESXi 5 successfully and I can connect to my Client vSphere host. However, as soon as I try to create a new virtual machine, the error message appears. (See attached screenshot)

  • Setting up a location of scrape persistent by using the vSphere Client

    Hello

I have an application on behalf of data store when you configure the location scratch using vsphere client.

This is the step that I have to perform to set up the scratch location and my query is

I have to specify the name of the data store for step 10, as what I see through the vsphere client IE Datastore1 (vmfs/volumes/Datastore1/.locker - ESXHostname)

    OR

What I need to specity the unique id that I am able to see in ESXi console that is to say 50060160c46036df50060160c46036df (/vmfs/volumes/50060160c46036df50060160c46036df/.locker- ESXHostname)

What would be the effect? Configuration with the name of the data store for the vSphere client.

You can configure the workspace for ESXi using the vSphere Client:

    1. Connect to vCenter Server or ESXi host using the vSphere Client.
    2. Select the ESXi host in the inventory.
    3. Click the Configuration tab.
    4. Click storage.
    5. Click a data store, and then select Browse.
    6. Create a directory named only for this ESX host (for example, .locker-ESXHostname )
    7. Close the browser to store data.
    8. Click Advanced under software settings.
    9. Select the ScratchConfig section.
    10. Change the configuration option to ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation , indicating the full path to the directory.

      For example:

      / vmfs/volumes/DatastoreName /. Locker-ESXHostname

    11. Click OK.
    12. The ESXi host in maintenance mode and restart so that the configuration change to take effect.

I ran a quick test on my test environment. You can safely enter data store, it will be automatically replaced by UUID data store when required restarting.

  • Slow downloading of vSphere client host

I just installed a new free host ESXi 4.1 U1 and when I connect to the web server to download the vSphere client it is terribly slow, about 1 MB/s.  I went down the list here http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1004109, everything seems fine.

On a different host (a BladeCentre with 6 blades), we lack vCenter Server 4.1 and when I connect the vCenter Server to download the customer is 35 MB/s.  Download client by the hosts directly is slow.  For comparison, I connected to another performer 4.0 host and the client download is fast, about 35 MB/s

So my question, is there a reason, I should get these slow when connecting to some hosts directly performance?  Client download thing is annoying but can be tolerated is one thing, but I am the time I'm having problems when I start to run vms on that host?

IIRC from the ESXi 4.1 vSphere Client is no longer included in the installation of the host. When you click on the link on the web page of the host, the client will be downloaded from the Internet.
