Permisions required for mounting NFS on ESXi host

Hi team,

In our java application uses) use API VMWARE to mount the NFS datastore on the ESXi host. But to do this, we need the ESXI root permissions. Because having credentials root door reached the safety of the system, we would like to create a user with the required permissions will be sufficient to add the mounting NFS on ESXi host.

But do not know how to see the permissions required for the Assembly of the NFS on ESXi host. Pointers would be useful.

Thanks in advance,

Anjana

Hello

Storage permissions lies in the roles of Group of data store.

You should have a default profile role of storage in your vCenter.

  • Is it possible to use GPFS or another build is a SAN storage shared for multiple ESX and ESXi hosts?

We have a license GPFS and SAN storage. I am trying to create a storage shared for multiple ESX and ESXi hosts share existing virtual machines. We tried once NFS, it of a little slow and consume too much bandwidth LAN.

Anyone can help answer? Thank you very much in advance!

It depends on your storage space.

You must connect all hosts to the same San, then follow the configuration guide of ESXi and specific documentation for your storage space (for sharing LUNS on multiple hosts).

    Hello

I need help to get a script VCO that change password for root to an ESXi host.

In PowerCLI is the Set-VMHostAccount cmdlet. I searched in VCO API... I have not found or something similar.

I found the object of VcHostAccountSpec but seems it only works with "Host Profiles" and my licenses are Standard and Enterprise.

Another option would be to connect to the ESXi host with vCO plugin SSH and run the command "passwd" remotely. Haven't tried, but in theory, it should work.

@Tim - we try to keep the compatibility of the existing whenever possible plug-ins vCO so PowerShell module should work with the latest vCO relies.

  • Best practices for storing the Logs of the system for all newly improved ESXi hosts?

    Hi people,

What are the options and best practices for the Logs of the system for all newly improved 5.1u1 ESXi hosts?

Do I need to have the Syslog server or it can be safely ignored?

    Thank you

    Evening,

Syslog is preferred, but VMware has provided a collector of syslog on the vcenter installation disc can be installed on any windows host or your vcenter. I can't count the number of times where I had guests CMTF or newspapers lost... Fortunately for the syslog which collects up to the accident.  It is not necessary, but it's really a good idea without any real cost since you can use your vcenter host.

  • Newbie! 5.5 ESXi host unreachable.

I just install Esxi on my Intel i7 Quad Core with 1 TB of HARD drive and 16 G of RAM. The installation was smooth but I have problems connecting to the host.

Just after startup, I am able to ping network mgmt host for about a minute and it will not respond then. I checked the interface / network mgmt grew it just stop respond to ARPs.

    vobd:

"Requested after 1 failure event (esx.clear.net.vmnic.linkstate.up)."

"Requested after 1 failure event (esx.audit.net.firewall.config.changed)."

"Sent successfully (esx.audit.net.firewall.port.hooked) event after 1 failure.

I tried to unload the firewall by using esxcli commands also changed firewall by default-action at the NECK. No luck.

Whenever I restart the host remains for a few minutes and then is inaccessible from my vmclient (or the PC directly connected to the host).

I'm pretty new to this solution and tried my luck by searching in the database but did not get a definitive answer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Kind regards

    MM.

Just to update, it seems to have corrected itself after a few reboots.

So to summarize, I had drivers RealTek RLT8167 when I had Windows installed on the machine, however when I tried to install ESXi 5.5 he complained "No. Found network adapter".

The reason for this is because ESXi 5.5 included not all drivers RealTek as Vmware he had forbidden in their software. So, I download RLT8168 drivers (also can be found in the link posted above by cykVM) and used ESXi Customizer tool to rebuild the ISO, including the downloaded driver. It worked for me, however the ESXi host would not meet its IP address in a short time after the restart.

That's when I connected this post looking for help, but the next day when I started the host he was working regularly and was even until now. So no real change not required except two or three restarts! I was about to buy a supported network card, but it proved to be lucky for me!

    Kind regards

  • Affinity reserve esxi hosts and host rules

I'm trying to reserve a few for some special VM ESXi hosts, I used affinity DRS rules to make the virtual machine to run on special guests, but other virtual machines are also coming on ESXi hosts reserved because of the DRS.

I have about 300 virtual machines running on 10 ESXi hosts running VMware 5.0 Update 2

Currently using Vcenter 5 Update 2

I have just installed 3 new hosts ESXi running the same VMware 5.0 Update 2

The new ESXi 3 hosts must be temporarily reserved for a project with 30 new VM only, but always be part of the main cluster because they will be used with the 300 existing virtual computer when the project is completed.

I have a rule configuration of affinity for the new virtual machine only works on the new ESX hosts

But the problem is that some of the other 300 vm get Vmotioned with DRS on the new hosts as they have a lot of free resources.

There are new virtual machine being added to the VM s 300 all the time by other people that I can't control.

I'm happy to manually add my special project of the virtual computer to the rule of the DRS of affinity for the reserved ESX hosts can not have "other persons" manually add the new virtual machine to another rule, should it be automatic for them.

I would like to set up a global rule to tell if you are not a virtual machine in my special project group DRS that you are not allowed to run on the 3 new ESX host.

Dose anyone know if this is possible?

Why not move the hosts in a cluster instead?

  • As part of the SAR cert is to have a NW separated between ESXi host required for VMotion or is it OK to use IP for VMotion management, in the execution of Certification tests.

As part of the SAR cert is "have a NW/dedicated separate between hosts ESXi (on which we GOS) mandatory for VMotion or is - OK to use IP for VMotion management in the execution of Certification tests.»

Note that the verification passed Test when you use management IP for Vmotion and without a dedicated connection to NW between ESXi hosts.

Separate dedicated network interface cards preferred. No problem with the test after this change case.

What is the absolute path to /esxi?

You said above "my root" and I assumed to mean that esxi is a directory directly under /, but is that correct? Looks like maybe not.

  • Service NFS server running on an ESXi host.

I was able to set up successfully with "Services for Unix" NFS server on my Windows 2003 server.  I would now be able to set up an NFS server and NFS client on a pair of ESXi servers. This would allow me to copy the guests of virtual computer through the ESXi host servers using NFS mount points.

    Engineer accommodation

    ModusLink Open Channel Solutions, Inc.

Short answer is that you can give to this.  ESXi doesn't have access to the console, without access to the consoles, that can't do.  Even with Console cannot yet be done, ESX is bare bones but single server, not Linux.

You don't want to use your ESX Server as a device.  It's a bad habit to enter.  ESX is a VM host, simply.  Not a general-purpose, file sharing / FTP / sharing NFS GNU / Linux.

If you think NFS, set up a Linux VM on this host, and use it.

  • NFS datastore on vCenter ESXi hosts

I'm running out of space on our NAS storage.

Another unit would be very costly.

It seems easy enough to add an another data store from an NFS share.

Are there problems I should be aware of if I were to add an NFS share from a physical windows 2008R2 Server?

I understand that, since the part is right on a SATA drive performance will be bad enough.

I was thinking more just for backup.

Snapshots can be taken of vm that are located on a store of data VMFS5 and stored in a NFS data store?

There will be problems with the addition of shared NFS of different targets to the ESXi hosts.

However, put pictures on different levels is not a good idea. Snapshots in VMware products function as a string. When you create a snapshot, delta / only modified data is written and read in the snapshot files / delta. The parent files are still used, but opened in read-only mode.

Remember, a snapshot is not a backup!

  • 5.5u2 ESXi host will not mount CF data warehouses

I am the admin in a test lab, so many times I have to "make do" with what I have for the material.  I recently reassigned a R910 Dell with 64 GB memory in a 5.5u2 ESXi host.  It has some storage SAS (2.5 to) and some (CT 11) directly connected FC storage and some FC HBAs for use by VMs to send data to the tape library.

Recently, we had a power failure, and this host does not reconnect to the CF storage when she returned to the top.  (Duty to "make do" with what I means not having is not the capabilities of UPS).  I can tell the host of HBA see it properly and sees the LUNS on RAID controllers, but refuses to mount.  I go through the add storage Wizard, and he sees that there is a store of data storage VMFS, but always refuses to mount.  I also tried to remove the redirection to the two FC HBA that have been set up for this purpose, but it made no difference.

I have now three users unable to work because they cannot access their virtual machines on storage of this FC.  I can't even transfer them off to use the SAS storage form.

I think it might be the cause file system damage, but I'm not sure.  Someone at - it suggestions?

Have you ever tried to set up data warehouses from the command line (see, for example, http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1011387)?

  • Minimum hardware requirements for ESXi 5

    Hello

I am a newbie of virtualization and ESXi so please help me on these issues:

I intend to host 1 Windows 2008 Server and 1 Pfsense on the same host with ESXi. The two servers to serve a small number of users (less than 10). The Win2k8 runs just small .NET application and the just Pfsense will act as a router/gateway for web portal (without VPN, nothing complicated here).

I checked the minimum requirements for VMWare ESXi here (KB VMware: minimum system requirements for installing ESX/ESXi) but still uncertain before buying new equipment to run ESXi because the specifications said ESXi only works on 64-bit x 86 CPU.

    I'm looking at this PC:

    CPU: Processor Intel® Celeron® 1037U (2 MB Cache, 1.80 GHz)

    RAM: 8G RAM Support memory DDR3 2 G / 4G / 8G / 16G, DDR3 1333 / 1600 MHz

    Storage: 64G SSD

ESXi will install OK on this system?

    Thank you

    Hello

Intel http://ark.intel.com/products/71995/Intel-Celeron-Processor-1037U-2M-Cache-1_80-GHz CPU specs this should work in general, but can cause performance problems as this Celeron has only 2 hearts.

Another thing to consider is the RAM, ESXi 5.5 OS takes about 4 GB of RAM on the 8 GB leaving you 4 GB for VMs Windows 2008 with less than 4 GB wil be quite slow and sooner or later begin to swap to disk.

Also the motherboard used is something check with HCL as at the storage controller and connect it on Board should be compatible.

The road easier to go is to get the material at the level of the server that is listed in the HCL, you can find systems awarded new/used being fully compatible. It would be much more reliable than the construction of a whitebox on office equipment system.
